Help! 10.4.6 made my mouse pointer turn into a little white square :(

i have a dual proc. 450 mhz g4 powermac (gigabit ethernet). the only 'extras' i have put in is a superdrive, a usb2.0 card (for my new ipod) and thats it. it has os 10.4 on it. it had the standard ati rage 128 pro video card in it.
well, i attained a nvidia geforce2 mx card with 64 mb on it. so i decided to put it in the mac. all was fine. well tonight i finally software updated my system which put 10.4.6 on the computer. when restarting i usually saw the black mouse pointer appear in the top left coner as login and all that took place. but now with 10.4.6 i saw a blue square.
now my mouse pointer is a little square of various colors. sometime it is white, which is a pain when a document or webpage is in the background. sometimes is is mutil colored, sometimes pink.
im sure it is something with 10.4.6 and not hardware related. when i start up from a tiger install disc or panther install disc its a normal pointer. but when updating to 10.4.6 the problem occurs.
i want my mouse pointer back

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try swapping back in the original graphics card.
If that works, then the graphics card you put in needs a firmware update.

  • Mouse pointer turned solid black, no white outline

    Hi all,
        10.7.3  OSX on mac mini.
Mouse pointer is now a solid black, the white outline has disappeared.
Any idea what happened and how to fix?
It is really noticeable on a black background as the pointer completely disappears.
         Any thoughts most appreciated.
                  Jack

You may want to repair permissions and the disk. You might also want to try reinstalling the software.

  • Mouse pointer turns into hand (10.8)

    Dear Mac community,
On my MacPro, the cursor often turns into the hand icon,
andclicks on web site buttons and links do not work. For example, I
can't click on "add to cart" when on Amazon. Does anyone know of a fix?
Oddly enough, the cursor resumes its arrow shape when
I move it away from the link.'

    johnb-one,
Thanks very much for taking the time and effort to reply.
To provide you with more data, the same
problem occurs in the Safari, Firefox and Chrome
browsers. I am using a Logitech MX performance mouse
that uses the left panel for left-clicking.
Since receiving your reply, I have
              a. verified that I am on the latest
                  Java release
              b. cleared out the history data from
                  my browsers
              c. cleaned the mouse, and when that did not work --
             d. switched to my  "back-up" MX Performance mouse
None of these actions removed the problem in any of
    the 3 browsers.
I am having trouble reloading the Logitech MX Performance
mouse configuration utility. (After install, I get a message
that install succeeded but I can't find the icon to launch it.)
I will let you know what happens when I get it to run.
Since mouse-clicking is such a basic operation, I am
surprised that Apple does not have a utility that "captures"
the result of a click from a misbehaving mouse - thereby enabling
    diagnosis of the underlying problem.

  • System stops working pointer turns into a circle and starts again

My system slows down as the mouse cursor turns into a circle from time to time and then starts working again. Things become pretty slow. Shut down and start takes a long long time.

That can indicate a too-full hard drive. Highlight your hard drive's icon and then do "Get Info..." from the Finder's "File" menu. That will look something like this:
"Available" needs to be about 20MB or 15 percent of "Capacity," whichever is greater. If the drive is too full, this article will help you regain space:

  • Weirdness on screen, first lines, now madly flitting mouse pointer

Ok, I use a fan control now to keep things cool. The horizontal lines haven't happened for a week or better. But then twice the mouse pointer went nuts and shot all over the screen.
First time round when a lot of apps were open, second time when Time Machine was to do a backup and I turned off the Modem before. Turning off the old ZyXel modem NEVER caused a hick-up. With the ZyXel I never had the lines issue either (under Tiger and all the way up to 10.5.7).
    - Might there be mobo/graphic card trouble?
    - Could the Motorola modem have some incompatibility (EtherNet connex, not WLAN)
    - Or some software / OS 10.5.7 problem?
    Thanks

Try trashing your Desktop preference file.  You can find the file here:
    Macintosh HD> Users> Your Username> Library> Preferences> com.apple.desktop.plist
Drag the file com.apple.desktop.plist to the Trash.  Empty the trash and restart your iMac.
    Good luck.

  • Icons, mouse pointer, turned black on my Macbook

I'm running Leopard on my Macbook and I noticed that lately my mouse pointer has turned to an all solid black pointer hand when I mouse over links. Also when I goto shutdown I notice a big black circle appears in the shutdown prompt. Also icons like the webcam icon have turned a solid black in Yahoo Messenger .. Did i get a virus or something?

You may want to repair permissions and the disk. You might also want to try reinstalling the software.

  • Mouse cursor turned into beach ball

Within my son's user account, the mouse cursor has turned into the beach ball. It doesn't spin and he can use it normally as a cursor (both with apps and with the Finder), but it's annoying (and too big for a cursor tip).
    Who can help me out?
    Thanks a lot
    Peter

As far as I know, mighty mouse software (in System Preferences If I am not mistaken) allows one to bring customisations to the cursor used.
There is a "haxie" program also called "Mighty Mouse" that does this, hyphen. Its not the same thing as the Mighty Mouse System Prefs panel, though.
THe Universal Access System Prefs will let you change the SIZE of the cursor, but not the shape.
This has got to be a .plist issue in the User's Library Prefs folder of some kind I would think.
    Cheers

  • Why do my bullet points turn into numbers once the HTML is open in a browser?

I have some HTML code that I am using as the body of an email. It has bullet points throughout it but once I open or view it in an internet browser so that I can copy and paste it into the body of my email, the bullet points have all become ( 1. ). They also have be tabbed way over from their original locations...

We would need to see your code to help.
My guess is you have some css in the <head> of the page, either embedded or external, that modifies the list-type. DW would be able to see it, but if you're just pasting code from the <body> to the email page, it wouldn't be included.

  • When I open one particular folder to play the games in it the pointer turns into a pinwheel and I cant open the game or close the folder unless I shut down my computer.  Never happened before and does not happen with any other folder on the desktop.

why does pointer become a pinwheel when I open one particular folder only and prevent me from opening the apps in it and then keep me from closing the folder unless I shut down the computer completely.  I can open all other folders on the desk top without a problem.  My game folder never gave me trouble before.

Try this. Open one of your files. The window that contains your picture is named at the top. Command click on the name and you'll see the entire path starting with its name and then moving to the folder, the folder it is contained in, etc all the way to down to the hard drive volume name. This should tell you where to find the folder.

  • Pointer turned into a link hand, and I cannot click anything

I cannot seem to find the keyboard hotkey that will allow my cursor to become an arrow again. My dog stepped on my computer and it's permanently a hand pointer (link pointer). No idea how to fix it without a reboot - but I don't want to do that yet.
    Thanks.
[I am using my work machine to type this]

I had three of these come to me in the past couple of days. All of the issues were pretty close to the same. One of them, the pointer lagged while trying to use it. The click would work. Another computer, the pointer would lag and the click did not work. I tried all of the above options and it would work, but only for awhile. I replaced all three of the computers track pads and it resolved the issue for all three.

  • Mouse pointer does not stick on fader when moving it

Using Logic Pro 9. If I grab any fader, the mouse pointer turns into a small dot. If I then drag the fader up or down, the dot does not stick on the fader. Instead, I find I have to drag the dot well above or below the fader to make big adjustments. Is there any setting to control this? Or is this just how it is in Logic. In all other audio applications I've seen, the mouse pointer sticks on the fader when moving it up or down.

No - haven't found a fix for this yet. I can only guess that maybe it wasn't as noticeable when display screens weren't so big. I'm running on a 27" iMac so the effect is quite pronounced. I supposed it could be argued that it gives you a finer grain of control to make small changes - but it really takes away from the 'feel' like you are moving a real fader.

  • Mouse pointer changes to Black & White circle!

    Hello everybody,
I wrote this script and saved it as an app called "Sleep":
    tell application "Finder"
    eject disk "STORAGE"
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    sleep
    end tell
    tell application "Sleep"
    quit
    end tell
This has worked perfectly except when the computer wakes, the mouse pointer is the black and white circle. Everything still works normally (I think), but it is really annoying.
Is there anything that I can add to my script to change my mouse pointer back to normal?

    Hello
Try removing the part telling your applet to quit, which is not necessary unless your applet is saved as stay-open.
The modified script would look like:
    --SCRIPT
    tell application "Finder"
    eject disk "STORAGE"
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    sleep
    end tell
    --END OF SCRIPT
    Hope this may help,
    H

  • My OWN  mouse pointer movie issue

Hi ive made a mouse pointer movie in flash. When i rollover the butones that i have on my movie works.
When i enter in the movie it start to drag and it work perfectly.
The only problems that i have is that when the people that they take out the mouse off my stage of movie i want that
mouse pointer to not stay there on the border  up down right and even left.
When is out with the real pointer to desseaper complete ,because is dosent look very nice staying there nearly to the borders of my flash movie.
    i have a movie with 120width and 100height.
so when its louding the movie work apper my mouse that i made, now i want to put some code in to dessepear compleatly when i get out of the movie with the pointer on the all borders!...

Mine works similarly, but that exampole you link to appears to use location detection to start a tween that makes the object gradually disappear.  I say this because the distance from the edge where it stops and fades differs every time.  It most likely is set to occur at some distance less than the actual width and height of the stage since it does not happen at the edge, always somewhere before it.
So you could use a conditional to test if you want to change the alpha...
    Mouse.hide();
    pointer_mc.startDrag(true);
    this.onMouseMove = function(){
          if(_xmouse < 5 || _ymouse < 5 || _xmouse > Stage.width-5 || _ymouse > Stage.height-5){
                pointer_mc._alpha = 0;
          } else {
                pointer_mc._alpha = 100;

  • Mouse pointer over links

My mouse pointer changes to the hand for only a fraction of a second when it moves over a link and then changes back to the standard pointer icon. How do I fix this?
    I'm using Safari 1.3.2, OS X 10.3.9

I'm not sure I understand the problem/question.... it's normal that mouse pointers turn into hands when passing through links, no matter what browser you use. And each time you move it turns into hand/pointer again and again... sometimes it even takes time until it turns back to pointer again, because he is "thinking"...

  • Odd GUI mouse pointer behavior

I have noticed since Lion came out the ability to resize from any window edge has seemed to have brought with it a minor annoyance. The mouse pointer form persists as an up-pointing arrow after the pointer leaves the bottom edge of an application if it is brought down to butt with the dock. Ought it not return to the "main" form of the familiar heftier-looking black arrow pointing to an approximate 11 o'clock direction?
Also, along the same lines I have noticed that if Stacks list-style menus overlap hyperlinks in Safari and you hover your mouse pointer over those areas of overlapping the pointer turns into the hand-with-an-index-finger-pointing type of pointer form. The clicking behavior remains true as one would expect and clicks the item in the Stack menu while leaving the stuff underneath alone.
Does anyone else get any of this strange behavior? I am putting it in Mountain Lion because it is also in 10.8 as it was in 10.7 Lion. It was not in 10.6 Snow Leopard and I am somewhat convinced that the "any edge resizing" feature is responsible for bringing this about.

I had to reinstall Mountain Lion and I am having the same mouse problem in Safari with a hand appearing at certain times. I never had that problem in prior iterations of OS X nor in Mountain Lion until I had to reinstall it. The hand it too large to figure out where it is when I want to insert something in text. I suppose it's the pointing index finger, but I want my arrow pointer back!
