Help! 250GB external HD formats only to 127.9GB

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to solve this problem:
I bought a Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache hard drive last Sunday. I brought it home, installed it in an external drive enclosure, and formatted it. It would only format to 127.9 GB.
I returned it and exchanged it for another of the same model. I brought it home, installed it in an external enclosure, and it, too, only formatted to 127.9 GB.
I then mounted it in another enclosure, made by another manufacturer. Same problem.
Here's my system info:
G4 Quicksilver, twin 1GB processors.
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,5
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
Memory: 1.5 GB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.3.3f2
System 10.4.7
1.5GB RAM
Internal hard drives:
a 250GB Western Digital,
a 200GB Maxtor,
a 160GB Western Digital,
and a 120GB Western Digital.
I have two of the internals connected to a PCI card.
I usually have two external hard drives attached: a 250GB connected to a USB 2.0 PCI card, and a 60GB Firewire.
To format the new drive, I disconnected all other external drives.
I've had no previous problems with the internal drives or the externals, and all have formatted correctly.
Any suggestions?
- Ken

Hello! Here's a couple of ext combo cases. I've got both and am well pleased using 200 gig drives in both. Tom

• I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and i can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help

I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and I can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

• My external harddisk formatted in one iMac can only read in other iMac. How to make enable read

Why my external harddisk formated as R&W for one imac will remained for use in that imac only. When I bought a new imac the external hard disk end up can Read only. Shouldn't it remain the same as R&W? There is no way you can set back to R&W for my new imac. Why can't Apple make thing simple for us and let the complicated user do the complicated thing? Once formated it should be able to use for all PC and all Mac. How to reset without lossing all my files in the harddisk? I know the easiest way to reset is to reformat it and lose everything. Not user friendly isn't it?

Jimmykkk,
If you want assistance you need to quit the rant and state what you need. Also be specific, you don't mention anything about the old Mac, the kind of EHD, what it is used for etc....
If you want to share a EHD between a PC and Mac you will have many limitations,  primarily the size of files you can store.

• FireWire400 Drive disconnects randomly - Acomdata 250GB External - Help?

I bought a Acomdata 250GB External hard drive with FireWire400. It has worked beautifully for me for the past week or so. I used it with Time Machine and I also backed up files (movies, music, etc.) onto it which worked pretty well. I never formatted it or anything, just plugged it in and it started working. I use it in Windows sometimes using MacDrive - software which lets you access Mac formatted drives. I do this to transfer my Music to my Windows XP partition (Boot Camp) and things like that. Just recenetly (past 2 days or so) it disconnects randomly even when a file transfer is in progress. If I unplug and replug it, it sometimes fixes it. But other times I need to flip the power switch on/off for it to start up again. I feel like cutting the power like that must be bad for the drive. In my 2 weeks of ownership I never turned it off until I started having the issues, I just would let it spin down when I turn off the computer. I thought it got too hot so I let it sit for a while but I still have issues. I've heard you should totally unhook everthing (Firewire cable, power cable, then take everything out of your laptop (ethernet, Firewire, battery, etc.) and let them sit for like 30 minutes to get all power cycled and stuff. I'll try that now but can anyone throw me a bone? Please?

By the way, now I can't even get Mac to see it. I've turned it on/off, unplugged/replugged, what the crap.

• External hard-drive only for Intel-based macs?

I have an iMac G5 powerpc (without the camera). Today I bought a Western Digital: My Passport- Essential 250GB external portable hard-drive. I will be using this to back-up my iMac's hard-drive. Before I opened the packaging, I decided to see if Apple.com sold this product in their online store. They do, but one of the 'one-star' reviews posted on this product stated that "it will only work with Intel-based macs." I can't seem to find any more information about whether or not this statement is correct. I was hoping somebody could help me out and let me know the answer. If it doesn't work with the powerpc imacs, do you know of a brand or model that does? I plan on leaving it in the packaging until I know for sure just in case I need to return it to the store. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

You can order them online from [macsales.com] and have them sent to your college. You can look in Staples or go online and see if they carry LaCie - the OWC ones are only sold on macsales, as far as I know.

• External HD Formatting

(Sorry, didn't know which category to post this in)
I just bought a LaCie 250GB external HD, and pretty much just used the plug and play feature of Mac OS X to use it. When I go to windows, it will sometimes work and other times say that it needs to be formatted. It is formatted as FAT32, I believe, through Mac OS X I'm guessing since Windows only formats 32GB in FAT32. I need to use the HD with both Windows XP and Mac OS X. I don't want to partition it (I'd like to be able to have full access to everything through OS X and Windows XP if that makes sense) Thanks guys!

I believe the easiest solution would be to put the external HD on the Mac and format it in Disk Utility as one FAT32 volume (MS-DOS Format) using the PC Partition Scheme and not the Apple Partition Scheme or the GUID Partition Table.
Be sure to use the PC Partition Scheme, ok?
This disk would then be usable with Windows XP and Mac OS X (and just about any other modern OS).
Remember, Windows XP won't let you format a disk with more than 32 gigs on FAT32... but any other OS can. XP will handle the FAT32 volume fine.

• Buying a 2,5" external FW400 drive only for Photoshop CS2 as Scratchdisc?

i am a retouching professional
and use a pb 15" and a ACD20".
do you think it makes sense to buy a
2,5" external FW400 drive only for Photoshop as Scratchdisc?
2,5" therefore, as it needs no powersupply
by wire. that elegant i guess,
my images have 1,5GB on the disc, and use often 4GB RAM in Photoshop CS2 but i only have 2GB RAM in my pb 15" 1,67 from late 2005.
its very slow sometimes as Photoshop (PS) scratches onto my external drives which are all nearly full of stuff and heavyly fragmented.
so , i had that idea of buying a drive only for PS, which is always "empty" and PS can use it for scratching large data onto the disc. i would format it everyday in order to prevent fragmenting (?) and be able to work fast,
thats my goal, just to work faster. its really slow sometimes as i suffer from too less RAM. of course i am buying a G5 quad later with plenty of RAM but for now i have to work with my pb .... and need a better working solution
anyone thinks it makes sense?
if yes, how big should the disc be, 20GB , 40Gb, or more?
if the file in PS has 4 GB RAM, and has 30 layers or more, how can i find out how many GB space it needs on the scratch disc?
i would like to buy this one:

Cutie EX

if 40GB would be enough i could save more money, but if you say i need 80, its also ok. which model/brand of disc would you put in? i am looking for a quiet one, 7200rpm and at least 40 or better 80GB. but quiet would be important.

thanks for your help.
i had another idea now: i copied my stuff from my internal pb to my external FW 400 disc. now i have 40GB free space in my internal.
- is this enough for photoshop scratch disc?
- should i also define the other 3 discs (external) as Photoshop scratch disc (possible in the prefercenes of Photoshop, up to 4 discs can be used as scratch discs)
- what about the system scratch disc, do both interfere themselves or bother?
- better also copy the image i work with in Photoshop to the internal powerbook drive which has only 5400 rpm or better leave it where it is now on the external FW400 drive 7200rpm?
thanks

• Time machine with WD portable 250gb external hard drive

im using the WD 250GB external hard drive to backup my HD...im very new to MAC and time machine. I have a MacBookPro. My question: do you recommend i back everything up with time machine on this external WD HD? thanks for your help

OK, I understand now. I think the following may be helpful:
Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
8. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
9. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
Cool Drives
OWC
WiebeTech
Firewire Direct
California Drives
NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
If you have any questions about this please ask. Obviously you can also use TM as your backup system letting it run with its defaults. TM will initially back up everything. Thereafter it does only incremental backups - it backs up only those files that have changed since the last backup. Currently TM backs up every hour, week, and month. If the backup drive becomes full TM is supposed to remove the earliest version of a file to make space for the latest version. You can find third-party utilities such as TimeMachineEditor or TimeMachine Scheduler - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - that will let you change the schedule intervals if you prefer not to have backups running so frequently. You can also add files and/or folders to an exclusion list in TM for items you don't want to backup such as the /System/ folder.
However, TM cannot make bootable backups. If you want a bootable backup you will need to use something other than TM. Several of the ones I suggest above do bootable backups, incremental backups, scheduled backups, and archival backups.

• Complete export of SAP XI elements to an external, readable format i.e. XML

Within the scope of a project regarding Dependencies of Applications within the company the data, saved in the Integration Directory as well as in the Integration Repository, have to be exported in an external, readable format which can be processed in another application. My question is concerned with the extraction possibilities I have concerning the different components:
Integration Repository: Here we need the data about Message Interfaces, Message Types as well as Data Types. As this information are formally described using WSDL: Does a possibility exist to export all WSDL Documents automatically?
Integration Directory: Here we are interested in the elements: Receiver Determination, Interface Determination, Sender Agreement etc. Does any possibility exist to export these data to i.e. a XML File? Is ABAP necessary?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Sebastian Grunow

• External drive format to be used as iTunes library and media folder

Hi everyone, I want to transffer my iTunes to an external drive, do I need to format my external drive to Extended Journal or will an Appleshare be alright? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply, good! I only asked because I read that if you transfer you iPhoto Library you need to have your external drive formatted to Extended Journal so I thought that it might be the same for iTunes. And I only read the post after I started to transfer the iTunes to an external drive. Thanks again!

• Cannot backup Windows 7 (dual-boot) image to external HD (formated as Mac OS Extended)

I cannot backup my Windows 7 (dual-boot) image to my external HD (formated as Mac OS Extended). I installed MacDrive 8.0 hoping to solve the problem but Windows 7 gives me an error when I try to create a backup: "...drive is not formatted as NTFS, cannot use as backup...".
I also tried making an Image of the Windows 7 partition through Disk Utility but was not allowed to do so.
I am not sure where else to go from here. I need to keep my external hard drive formatted as Mac OS Extended but I also need to backup my Windows 7 partition. I only have the single external at the moment. Is there a way to backup my Windows 7 partition?
Thanks

Winclone will backup your Windows partition to a Mac formatted drive.
Just search for Winclone on this forum and on Goggle.

• Need help with external hard drive!

Hi all,
I have been having trouble with my external hard drive.
My mac is reading the disk however all my files from the hard drive are missing?
In disk utility is seems to show that there are files on the disk but I cannot see them?
At the bottom is shows that there are files on the disk!
PLEASE HELP!!!!
Here is a screenshot of my disk utility

Ok just to clarify the format issue...
Just move the data from the external drive, format and then move it back if you want, as JiveMasterT explained.
If the external drive is FAT file system, then you don't need to format the drive unless you are planning on using the drive as an OSX backup.
