Help!  40K pics & a monolithic library file == 2x the disk space usage

All,
I recently took the plunge (twice) and purchased my first Apple computer since a IIc. I bought an Intel based iMac (2GHz) and have moved all of my pics (about 40K) to an external 1TB drive array (mirrored 500GB).
I found iPhoto woefully inadequate to deal with this many photos and after talking to the folks at the Apple Store took the 2nd plunge and bought Aperture (off of eBay).
Now I come to find that Aperture wants to copy all the photos I have it index (ideally all of them) into a single library file. Is this correct? Is there any way to prevent it from doing this and just accessing them in the directory structure I have already painstakingly setup over the last 6 years (I realize I can sort of rebuild the structure in Aperture but don't want them stored in the lib file)?
I am asking for 2 main reasons:
1) I think a large monolithic fil is a bad design and more prone to problems if the drive starts to get corrupted, file is deleted, etc
2) I don't want use 2x the HD space as I need the individual files accessible to windows machines and other devices (set-top box) for viewing photos
iPhoto has this option as: Preferences -> Advanced -> (Uncheck) Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library
So - can Aperture do this, index and access the files in the existing dir structure, or am I going to need to resell Aperture on eBay?
Thanks!

It's not a "lib file". It's a set of directories - just think of it like moving your same directory structure inside Aperture itself. Do just as you are now, have folders in folders in folders and then at the lowest levels in directories that hold pictures make projects for each and load the images from that directory into the project.
Then if you explore the Aperture library using Finder (right click on the aperture library and select "See Package Contents") you will see all of your directories there - the .approject files down inside these directories are also packages that you can look inside of, though it's a little different in there as your master files are inside import directories and each has it's own directory.
The most important thing is, your master files are always where Finder can reach them if you absolutely need to get them out.
I am asking for 2 main reasons:
1) I think a large monolithic fil is a bad design and
more prone to problems if the drive starts to get
corrupted, file is deleted, etc
It would be - but Aperture is actually safer than holding it inside a single library because:
a) The files are all just in normal directories, so they suffer no more risk of corruption than they would outside your library.
b) There is a database that holds all of your edits so if the files in (c) get corrupted you can recreate them.
c) There are sidecar files next to each master that describe all edits made to versions based on that master, so that if the database in (b) dies you can recreate it.
Aperture actually doubly-stores your edits! Of course on top of that you should at least use Vault or seek some other method of backup.
2) I don't want use 2x the HD space as I need the
individual files accessible to windows machines and
other devices (set-top box) for viewing photos
You can't use Aperture in that way. When using Aperture (or Lightroom) once you import an image there is only a "virtual image". It's not a real image until you export into some real format of your choice.
So for use with other programs, you need to choose a format and color space and DPI and export images.
There is actually one workaround to that whole process, someone made a program called ApertureToiLife which lets you use the large thumbnails (1024x680) as if they were in iPhoto.
You do not need 2x the space, because once imported you simply remove the masters - remember they are just sitting there inside the Aperture library directory. And Aperture will save space if you are using RAW files because it does not need to store a TIFF or PSD until you are actually ready to use the image, instead of having to create rendered files every time you edit.
So - can Aperture do this, index and access the files
in the existing dir structure, or am I going to need
to resell Aperture on eBay?
That really depends on if you can live with the exporting requirement, personally I find Aperture far more useful than iPhoto. Try out the comparison tools and look at some of the tutorials before you part with it. I have not found the exporting requirement to restrictive and it lets you choose any format you like at the point you need it, instead of having to decide formats before you've really even started editing.

After installing the latest update to Firefox onto Vista operating system the record part of real player no longer works, I think Mozila and Real are using a library file with the same name and the Mozila update is overwriting a Realplayer library file.

I was giong to say, "Help me, Adobe Joe Kenobi", but it looks like you're growing a beard waiting for an answer, too.
The same thing happened to me today. I trusted the "update" message since it was from Adobe, and apprently did so at my own peril. Now I get the "failed to load Core dll" message with a secondary reference to a memory address.
Just an observation, but what good are these forums when there are no answers? I see this problem as "Caused by Adobe Update", and would expect them to troublshoot and offer up a remedy. Since you've been waiting over two months with no response, I suppose it's time to trek off wasting more of my precious time to fix their problem. If I find the solution, I'll post it back to you.

  • IWeb updates my site to Mobileme, but my library files on the left stay red

    Hi
Ive just upgraded to ilife 09, and am having trouble with uploading. I didnt ever have this problem before the upgrade.
The site uploads fine, but once its done it doesnt turn the library files on the lefrt green. Meaning, everytime i do a minor update on the site it repackages and uploads the entire site again making it very hard to update my site
I have manually deleted my entire site off my idisk and tried uploading again to no avail
Any help would be supa dupa!
    Thanks
    Az

By url's, do you mean iWeb url's? They should work if you have named your sites differently. If you have not, then they will override each other. Look at your sites - http://web.me.com/username/sitename.
If you mean domain names linked to your MobileMe account, then how many do you have and how are they forwarded? You can only have one CNAME per MMe account and all the rest must be forwarded using web forwarding with or without masking.
A little more info would be helpful.

  • Library file not the same when inserted.

    Hello all.
In Dreamweaver 8.0, I have a library item. When I insert it
into a page, I thought Dreamweaver kept inserting an older version.
I open the library file from the Assets panel, make sure it is
correct, save it, hit the refresh button in the Assets panel, and
I'm still getting an older version on my page.
I've also tried recreating the site cache.
However, I'm wondering if I'm getting a different problem.
My library item is a set of navigation links, and the whole
site is a subdomain. Not so unusual in itself. But because this
file is in the folder 'library', all of the links are pointing to
the library folder instead of the (sub) root folder. So I added the
folder name to the links. Would Dreamweaver be automatically
stripping the information, thinking it's redundant?
This is my library item, a drop-down menu.

    Use a server-side include instead....

  • If tempdb .mdf file out of disk space and we do nothing to fix, what could happen? Will anything crash?

Will anything crash or stop working if tempdb .mdf file out of disk space?

It might crash, sql server will stop responding or you may not able to perform any action until space allocated to tempdb.
Running out of disk space in tempdb can cause significant disruptions in the SQL Server production environment and can prohibit applications that are running from completing operations.

Had to clone my hard drive to another drive on my computer.
I have been receiving a message "Could not open a scratch file because the disk is not available"  I have tried UN-installing and re-installing...still the same message.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks!

    What do you have here.
If that does not help, reset your prefs
Hold fingers over Shift Option Command (or similar on Windows) then boot Photoshop and as fast as you can depress the 3 keys.

    Dear Adviser
This is NOT a bug report or an enhancement request.
We are looking for advice on a customer support call.
We are using iPlanet Webserver 4.1 SP7 and iPlanet Directory
    Server 4.12 on Solaris 2.8.
We are checking to see if there is any engineering
documentation or quick pointers on LDAP database file
sizes and cache file sizes that may relate to a
    reported problem.
Thank you for your time and co-operation in advance.
We have been working on a TIBCO/Portal Builder customer
issue that does not seem to have guidance in end
user documentation. This is related to a significant
increase in LDAP and cache file sizes (which at this
point do NOT seem to affect any performance). Is this
something that you are aware of from your QA/performance
tests? The problem seems to have suddenly cropped
up and we are attempting to isolate the triggerring event.
We started with the possibility that it is
    a. Solaris Platform issue
    OR
    b. LDAP issue
We have done several experiments to isolate specific
issues as described below. We have researched
Sun/iPlanet web site and technical sites on the net.
Currently, we believe that the LDAP database size is increasing
because the Portal has been configured with pages
that have a lot of "Personalized" panes. Users are visiting
these pages, and getting automatically subscribed to these
panes, which add corresponding entries in the LDAP server.
Please find below the listing of all the files (from LDAP
DB directory) which are growing very fast. Kindly advise what can be
done so that these files do not eat up all the disk space.

This may be perfectly normal behavior for the LDAP server. If some application is adding a lot of data to the server, the database will necessarily grow. You can look at the access log to find out the IP address of the client, the BIND dn of the client, and the operations from that client. Perhaps this will help you narrow down the culprit.

    FYI,
Don't really know if I'm adding anything useful but here it is. I use NetBeans and I simply added an images folder so now I have my package (deckofcards) and a sub package deckofcards.images.
    The image:
    back: Image {
                url: "{__DIR__}images/B.JPG",
                backgroundLoading:true
                placeholder:bind placeholder
};works and the value of "{__DIR__}images/B.JPG" becomes
    <CARD backUrl="jar:file:/C:/Users/Bill/Documents/NetBeansProjects/DeckOfCards/dist/DeckOfCards.jar!/deckofcards/B.JPG">
...when I marshal. That string (backUrl) will unmarshal correctly and can be use in the url variable to display and image too.

Hi Rob, Thanks for your input. The temp location is on the C drive with 228 GB free space. My other drives have 123 GB and 204 GB of free space. I can see how the 32 bit set up is perfectly extracted when it stops when coming to the 64 bit set up. I have done the exercise several times and also made new downloads. I am using Norton 360 and Malwarebytes anti-malware but the dowload from Adobe should be trusted.

  • I have 2 itunes libraries on my macbook, but can only access one. The itunes library file for the inaccessible library is subdued and won't open. Help?

When I select "Choose Library" the itunes library file is subdued.  I copied the library file off of Time Machine and put it back in itunes, but it remains subdued.  I'm running OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.4.1. Help?

I too had this problem and have solved it. After upgrading to iTunes 10.4.1 (Running OS X 10.6.8) I could no longer select library files. Previously, I would launch iTunes with the option key down to trigger the "Choose Library" dialog box. I have three libraries, each of them stored in separate iTunes folder within my user:music folder. I would then double-click on a given folder to open it and then double-click on the library file. After the 10.4.1 upgrade the library files were grayed out (not selectable). The problem was resolved by changing what and how I selected. When the three iTunes folders were displayed I clicked once on a folder to select it (instead of double-clicking to open it) and then clicked the "open" button in the dialog box. This resulted was iTunes launched with the library file contained in that folder.

What I'll want to do is that keep all my music on my ssd and let all the podcast and itunes u be on an external hdd.
can someone outline the steps to...
create a library on the ssd on which os x is installed.
    move music, playlists and apps.
let the podcast and itunes u be on an external hdd and yet be accessible from itunes, like being referenced.
in the past i did this by moving the entire library to the internal drive and then while itunes was running, move the videos from the library folder to the external drive. it autoMAGICALLY was able to find the videos on the external drive while my music and apps were stored in the internal.
now my library size is so big with all the videos that i cannot do the above steps as i want be able to copy the entire library to the internal ssd.

Sometimes we sleep.  We have even been known to be away from the keybord to bathe (but usually not for longer than 2 minutes once a week ).
I don't know how you automagically did it last time - your details are lacking.  iTunes is normally terrible at following you moving things, especially from drive to drive.  You either have to let iTunes do the moving (by consolidating to a new location) or you have to disable iTunes managing your media in which case it will follow moving inside a drive but still not between drives.
Despite the new version, iTunes still does not make it easy to split your library between drives.  Probably since you only buy your items from iTunes and are never away from a high speed Internet connection it doesn't matter since you can always stream or download items you need from your Match subscription, right?
