Help - 720p through VGA

Hi all,
I'm going to be putting my MBP through VGA to my Samsung 720p. I've been reading that, possibly, if done, it will not be 1280x720, like through DVI/HDMI, but 1024x768.
Is this accurate?

I did the same to my Samsung LCD TV. No problems. You can do it automatically. First turn on the TV, then connect the Mac AND THEN switch on the Mac. It recognizes the Mac automatically in the right setting. Thereafter I could adjust it to 1080p and it still worked. (didn't know a VGA cable could handle that)

  • Widescreen Display through VGA

    Hi everyone!
Ok, got a new monitor today (Samsung SyncMaster B2230) and linked it upto my iMac (Late 2009 running 10.6.6) and all of the resolutions that it is offering are ins 4:3, not 16:9 (native res of the monitor is 1920x1080). Tried installing SwitchResX but no luck with that either.
Thought this was wierd so connected it upto my macbook, and it displayed the 1920x1080 resolution (16:9) that I was after - so the problem isn't with the monitor or the cable or the adaptor
Also booted into Windows 7 on the iMac to see if it could get the resolution to go to 1920x1080, but it was only doing the 4:3 ones as well (tops out at 1600x1200)
I THINK that the problem is with the ATI card in the iMac being annoying and not wanting to do widescreen through VGA, if anyone has any ideas/advice on what might work to get this sorted please get in touch.

Some general background info that may help reduce the confusion (or at least help explain why it exists):
    • As explained in this Wikipedia article,"VGA" specifically refers to an analog video computer display standard introduced by IBM in the 1990's with a resolution no greater than 640 X 480 pixels, but in common use "VGA" has become a generic term for any of the modern analog video computer display resolution standards that use the analog VGA connector, or for the connector itself.
    • Several of these modern analog computer display standards define 16:10 widescreen formats (see for example this Wikipedia list), such as the "WUXGA" (1920×1200) format.
    • However, there is no common analog computer display standard that defines a "native" 16:9 widescreen format. The 1920x1080 widescreen format is the native one for HDTV's 1080p & 1080i signals, but they are digital formats with no direct analog counterpart.
    • To make things that much more complicated, analog video signals of the same resolution may use slightly different parameters for such arcane things as horizontal & vertical timing & sync, & different monitors or graphics cards may & generally do accept or supply only a subset of all the possible ones.
    • Because there are so many different variations in the analog standards, "plug & play" methods (in both Mac & Windows implementations) may not offer all the possible ones, especially those that involve non-native pixel mapping. For Macs, SwitchResX or a similar utility allows users to experiment with all the possible graphics card values it supports; however, there is no guarantee that the monitor will support the desired ones.
    • The manuals for most monitors & HDTV's include a chart of the parameters for each display mode their VGA ports support, although many are incomplete. It can be very challenging to find any set of values that work other than the "plug & play" ones, but the chart values at least will give you a clue about what may work -- only values on the chart will work so entering them in the utility & making guesses about any that are missing is the best you can do.
    • Because there are far fewer digital video display standard variations, using a monitor's or HDTV's digital connection(s) such as DVI or HDMI usually is much easier, as well as often producing a sharper image. Since all contemporary Macs support digital video out (with the appropriate adaptor), that should be your first choice whenever possible.

  • LCD becomes fuzzy after connects with T61p through VGA port

    Hello,
I have a Dell E207WFP LCD which is previously connected to a Dell desktop through VGA. Today I connect it to my T61p through VGA using the same cable. I am able to setup the resolution as native resolution which is 1680*1050 @ 60Hz. However, I found that the screen is obviously fuzzy than connect to the desktop. The font is not sharp. I tried to adjust the cleartype font in Win7 and the bright and contrast in the LCD but nothing helps. I connect it back to the desktop and it works fine... Both computers run Win7. Could you please let me know what could be the possible reason? Thank you very much!
My T61p uses FX 570m video card.

This is hard to judge without a picture. It could just be a low-quality VGA port which is not a defect but an attribute or a nature of many laptop VGA ports.
Remember that the VGA is an analog-type video connector and some sort of blurriness is to be expected, especially at higher resolutions, this is because the GPU processes the image digitally as well as the LCD, but the VGA is analog so the image has to go through 2 conversions.
In conclusion: VGA is great for use in projectors and other devices with resolution no higher than 1280x1024. Above this resolution, defects are likely to appear.
For higher resolutions I'd suggest purchasing the Advanced Mini Dock which features the digital DVI port.

Hi, i have a question for you, please someone help me!
On my 9800gt 512 card, there are dvi, vga and hdmi outputs. I have big Sony crt tv, and the only conectable option is through vga to composite adapter.
But, when i tried to buy it they said make sure the video card of your system supports TV (RCA/S-Video) output through VGA port.
    Does it?

  • G570 4334 Digital signal out through VGA?

I have the Lenovo G570 4334 laptop - My question: Does this laptop support digital signal output through the VGA port? If it does, do I have to access through the CMOS to turn it on or is it accessible through Windows 7?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Best...

Thank you for your reply Jin Li.
I have another question - Why does this cable exist? VGA to HDMI It includes a disclaimer in the description -
NOTE: Your Video card must support digital signal output through VGA port function. Please consult with your VGA card's user manual for more information.
If you read some of the customer reviews, it works well for some and not at all for others.
I suppose I could just buy the cable, it's cheap enough that it wouldn't be a problem if it does not work. I'm just trying to do my homework.
    Thanks again for your help.

    Thanks.

It's a POP account. I decided to clean up my mailbox today after noticing the computer was real slow after USA Today started sending their daily top stories with new graphics. Also before I noticed the problem with mail deletion - two things happened. 1) I updated security sofware as prompted by Apple and 2) downloaded Mackeeper and went throught some preliminary scans but did not buy their package. Thanks forn nstaying with me.

You want to write a review about Mountain Lion? I'm not sure that you can write about the OS at the app store - it's not an app. Or are you talking about the online Apple store? If you want to send feedback to Apple, you could use this:

  • Powerbook + Pioneer plasma through VGA gives horizontal glitches

I have a aluminium Powerbook 1.67 GHz, with the single-layer Superdrive, and the 128 Mb ATI graphics card. I hook up my Pioneer 436XDE through VGA to get correct resolutions and timings.
The problem is when I play a movie and and there's fast panning I tend to get horizontal glitches in the image. It's like part of the picture is moving before the rest is. The Powerbook's screen shows the same problems but not simultaneously. I've tried mainly with VLC and XviD-video. I got the same problems when playing a DVD with Apple's DVD Player.
System Preferences (Monitors) has no problem finding the plasma display and giving it the correct resolution (1280x768) but it only offers one refresh rate, 59.9 Hz. Shouldn't 60 Hz make more sense?
I have also tried to use the plasma display as the main display (booting with lid closed) with no better luck.
When I hook the Powerbook up through DVI to HDMI I do not experience these horizontal glitches. But using HDMI results in overscan. If I uncheck overscan in preferences the picture gets really small.
What's most likely the cause of the problem? Weird refresh rate? Incompatible graphics card? Bad VGA cord?
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi,
Maybe the Apple TV would be the most elegant solution. However you have posted your question in the wrong forum so not likely to get any answers here.
    best of luck,

  • Why T430 connect with monitor through VGA can only have 60 fps refreash rate?

    I have a T430 and T420.
When I connect the T420 with monitor through VGA, the refreash rate of the monitor can be 75 fps in 1600*900. But When I connect the T430 with the same monitor through VGA, the refresh rate can only be 60 fps, no 75 fps option in the list, Anybody has idea why it works like this?
    Thanks very much.

Actually, on second thought, does the external monitor show up as "Generic PnP monitor" in Device Manager? Or does it show up as the correct model number?

  • Connection to FullHD LCD through VGA

I have connected my X200s to a Philips LCD TV before by VGA (TV resolution 1300something x whatever)  but I am wondering if Full HD would be too much (1920x1080px) and if the image quality will be good enough to make it worth buying. I have searched the net far and wide but could not find an answer.
I am hoping some of you tried this and can give me a quick answer or some url-s.
    Thank you,
    Emanuel.
    Windows 7 64bit
    Thinkpad X200s | CPU 1,86Ghz | RAM 4GB | HDD Intel x25-M G2 80GB

Limitations are really based on the LCD itself since our x200's seem to support  2560 x 2048 on Sony's ( if you can keep from vomiting and buy a Sony) and on some Vizio's.
the quality and sharpness is apparent from 3-6 ft away and will require binoculars or magnify.exe for across the room computing. A decent b/t keyboard + mouse is advised and the Microsoft B/T peripherals with dongle support BIOS level input at post and 50ft+ range out of the box.

    I have Lenovo 3000 N100 (TYPE 0768-FPG) , OS - Windows 7.
It is connected to an external LCD (SONY LCD) and everything was OK untill one day, without me changing anything, suddenly I get "No Signal" message on the LCD when in PC mode. I tried different VGA cabels and different LCD monitor, tried formatting my machine but nothing helped.
Is there anything else I can try?

Actually, the message I get on the LCD  is: "No sync".

  • Cant get ibook to send display through vga cable

i have a ibook with a broken screen and i have not used it for a year for that reason. i recently boght a vga cable so i could use a external display. but i can not figure out how to get it to work plzzzzzzzzzz help

    Hi shur,
Well like Rhonda says. Sometimes that tiny connector on the iBook can be problematic, check for dirt and such.
    When you say:
i have a ibook with a broken screen
Is the display cracked? no display, black? No backlight w/ a dim image?
If the 2nd what happened when it failed.
It would also help to know your exact model CPU speed and size.

  • MB Air 2011 not displaying on through VGA to all projectors.

Tried 1 (newer model) at the office that worked fine but my older one at home doesn't display. I still get the blue flash screen though.
Also tried a new Fujitsu monitor that didn't display either (claims no input signal).
Does the xternal monitor through TB/MD port to VGA adapter only work on some models or if it works on one should it work on all? What can I try?
    Thanks a bunch.
    Mikkel

I would think it should work on all.
Mini-displayport (TB) plugs can be tricky in that you need to push firmly to make sure they are fully seated.  They may look like they are plugged in but may not be.
Check your Displays system preferences.  If there is no Arrangment tab then the computer isn't detecting the projector.  Try clicking Detect Displays.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the projector's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the projector is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution.  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.
