Help: A bluray drive compatible with MAc Pro 1.1 2006 2007

Hi,
Seems my factory bundled Pioneer dvd drive is bad and I need a compatible bluray drive now.
I have read that there are some issues with some models of  Pioneer and LG drives.
I tried to install older LG DVD drives I had here and they just kept ejecting dvd discs.
However, they were able to burn cd-Rs.
I was advised to search for Pioneer Bdr-208dbk
and LG WH14NS40MP  .
Here in Brazil we have similar names, maybe they are adapted for our country market.
I am using Toast 10 with OS 10.6.8.
MAc Pro 2.66 8GB RAM.
Any help is greatly welcomed!
Thanks in advance!

  • ATA Drives compatible with Mac Pro?

    Hello folks,
I currently have a Power Mac G4, with 2 200gig ATA internal Hard Drives. One is a Barracuda ST3200822A, and the other is a Western Digital WDC WD1600JB-00REA0.
Am I correct in assuming, from scanning these discussions, that these two drives are NOT usable in the new Mac Pro. Under the System Profiler they are listed under ATA not Serial-ATA.
    Thanks very much

  • External hard drive compatible with macbook pro 10.5.8

external hard drive compatible with macbook pro 10.5.8, i need a hard drive that will work with 10.5.8 to back everything up before upgrading to 10.6. a hard drive that is compatable with 10.5.8 has been impossible to find, a hard drive that works with both opperating systems is what i am looking for, any information that can help is appreciated

You can buy just about any USB2.0 hard drive and use it with your MacBook Pro.  Many older external drives come pre-partitioned and formatted FAT32 for use on Windows.  Your Mac can use that file system as well, but it has limitations on file sizes.  You can always re-partition your external drive and re-format it as HFS+ (MacOS Extended Journaled) then your old Mac OS version and your new one should both be able to access it just fine.  One thing to keep in mind is that many older OSes don't really handle drives larger than 2TB well, so you would probably want to try to keep your external drive to something smaller than 2TB...

  • What is a recommended internal hard drive for a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006)?

What is a recommended internal hard drive for a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) model? I would like to
add more hard drive space by utilizing the three available slots. However, from my understanding,
Apple does not produce hard drives for my older computer so I'll need to turn to a third party.

You are very much over-due for some new larger more efficient drives.
the most common best approach goes something like this....
    SSD 120GB for system
WD Black 1-2TB for data (and  put all your data and media files, all your home account sub-folders)
Backup. I use WD Green but use what you want. I have a small boot volume, TimeMachine, and 3rd that is a clone image of the boot drive volume.
Very fond of WD 10K VelociRaptor drives. Not much louder now than the WD Black 2TB, $100-200 for 250GB to 1TB.
You can use any size SATA 3.5" drive, most now are 1TB and up to 4TB.
You should have always bought Amazon or Newegg or outside of Apple, Apple can often charge 3x what those places charge.
Probably want to add or replace FBDIMMs you have, these are excellent and price in the last year has fallen.

  • AirPort Extreme card not compatible with Mac Pro???

    Hey,
I recently purchased my Mac Pro without thinking to include any hardware for connecting to a wireless network.
I have recently moved into a new apartment which I am keen to join to a wireless network which has just been set up by my roommate for his PC and Laptop.
I was going to buy an AirPort Extreme card, but I have read that it is not compatible with the Mac Pro. Yet when I looked at the configure process for a new mac it was listed as one of the devises offered for wireless networking!!
    I am very confused...
I was wondering if anyone could help me, i just need to know what hardware i will need and how it would be installed.
thanks, all help will be greatly appreciated!

the mac pro takes a slightly different airport express card. you have to purchase it at the retail store and have them install it. in my experience they will not allow you to purchase one and install it yourself due to the difficulty of installing it. best thing to do take your macpro into a apple retail store and see what they can do.

Is the latest nvidia driver (280.26) compatible with MacBook Pro 6,2 model)? Boot Camp 4.0 comes with the 262.41 nvidia driver, but I'd like to upgrade to the latest 280.26. The official 280.26 driver page on the nvidia site says that GeForce GT 330M is compatible, but in the footnote is written this thing:
Notebooks supporting Hybrid Power technology with Intel chipsets are not supported by this release
Do you think this is the case of MacBook Pro 6,2 model? Can I upgrade the driver without any problem?
    P.S.
I've the nvidia geforce gt 330m 256 MB.

  • External Hard Drive Compatible with Mac and Windows?

So my old laptop is a Dell Latitude and I bought a Western Digital external hard drive and put all my files/pics/music on it. The information the WD came with said its compatible with Mac and Windows, but when I plug it into my brand spankin new Macbook, it doesn't register with the computer and won't show up. What's going on?
    Message was edited by: philliesphan

I recently ran into that problem. In order to have the hard drive compatible for both PC and Mac it must be in a FAT32 format. In order to do this though all your files will be deleted (in order to reformat). You can do this by plugging in the hard drive into you mac and going under disk utility and there you will find your hard drive and under erase change the format to FAT32 and then you press erase (all will be deleted off the external drive though)

I recently had an experience with my Mac Pro 1.1 where it started lagging badly and when I attempted to reboot it locked up. At one point the Time Machine external drive unmounted and my USB ports weren't functioning. Later I attempted to retrieve the back up drive and do a complete restore, but found Disk Utility would never finish repairing the disk and permissions. In fact, this caused the Mac Pro to lock up and I would lose my USB ports again.
I ran the Apple Hardware Test twice and no results that would tell me what happened.
It was until I purchased a new drive to put in the external back up drive that my Mac Pro returned to normal. In fact I have seen better performance.
My question is, is I would like to hear opinions on this. Was this a gradual failure of a back up drive that had slowly been causing my Mac Pro to run sluggish until it finally crashed? Can a failing back up drive using Time Machine cause this? If not then what caused the Mac Pro to lock up? What can cause USB ports to stop functioning altogether and then return not afte a reboot but eventually?
I'm concerned that I could be losing my Mac Pro in the near future. I would love the new Mac Pro coming out later this year, but money is an issue right now. I would not be happy with a Mac Mini and iMacs are still financially out of my reach as well.
    Thanks you.

    My advice:
Replace the system drive with a Samsung 840 120 or 250GB SSD
Upgrade boot drive on a regular basis - for some that might be every two years
You are STARVING your system with so little memory. Anemia most likely.
If you are running Lion then upgrade to 10.7.5
If you did not do a "clean" install of Lion ./ or at least a clean install of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then update to Lion, that too can be an issue.

An SSD is a great way for $100 to make your mac faster and better than ever. Not justs quick boot and program launching but that too.
And a 1-2TB WD Black for data.
And of course you should be cloning your system, cloning your data drive(s), even swap and use a 2nd TimeMachine drive "only on weekend" to have a redundant backup set there too.
And instead of using USB, use FW400/800
You also have two extra SATA ports on the logicboard. For $25 run through a PCI card out the back for backups (not hot swap though). Ideal is to have internal 1-3TB drive for backup.
Can also add PCIe SATA card to add external backups; add USB3 (iffy).
If you have been living on 3GB RAM you have not been seeing good performance from your Mac Pro 1,1 (same model as mine, 7 yrs old this week)

  • Internal hard drive issue with Mac Pro

I work for two office that share information through a VPN. Each office has one Mac Pro being used as a server for data storage. The Pros have four internal hard drives (1TB each).
Hard drives in the Pro for OFFICE 1 were configured like so:
    HD1 - OS/Boot drive
    HD2 - Time Machine backup of HD1/DATA1/DATA2
    DATA1 - Data storage
    DATA2 - Data storage
Three weeks ago: Time Machine could not find HD2 and could not backup. I rebooted the machine and HD2 reappeared. However, after the reboot, DATA1 did not mount. I was unable to find DATA1 in Disk Utility. However, the drive could be accessed by all other Macs on the network. This machine was taken to the local Apple Store and we were told that HD2 was a bad drive and need to be replaced. We opted not to replaced the drive at this time and turned Time Machine backups off. We haven't had any problems with DATA1 since. (NOTE: During the weeks prior, the client machines intermittently lost connection with DATA1 and would have to reconnect)
Last week: OFFICE 2 - Mac Pro hard drives configured the same as OFFICE 1; however, HD2 was not used for TM backups. TM was turned on and set to backup HD1/DATA1/DATA2 to HD2 (exactly like OFFICE 1). The next day, TM could not find HD2 and backups stopped running. I rebooted the machine, HD2 reappeared, but we did not restart the TM backups.
Today: OFFICE 2 client machines have experienced intermittent disconnecting of DATA1.
I wasn't extremely concerned with the situation at OFFICE 1 as these Pros are almost five years old and in constant use. We plan on purchasing an external drive for the TM backups. HOWEVER, with a similar situation now being experienced in OFFICE 2, I am perplexed.
Could both machine be experiencing hard drive failures weeks apart? They were both purchased and installed at the same time.
Is there a known issue with TM and internal drives?
One difference between the two machines: OFFICE 1 is running OS X 10.8.5; OFFICE 2 runs 10.6.8
    Any suggestions/help is appreciated. Thanks!

Relying on TimeMachine has some issues, along with only having one, I use at least two swapping TimeMachine so that they rotate AND I clone every drive (volume actually) so I can swap drives if need be, especially useful for t he system but good for any drive.
Power issues in t he buildings?
There are some programs that will scan for and report and./or attempt to reassign a failing sector ("fail" is qualitative, is 10 write failures a fail? then the 9th is not but it is a "weak sector.") Some run in the background.
Mirror can be 2 or 3 ( I prefer 3, that way if one fails I STILL have a mirror array in place) where any failure is not acceptable, AND where the array data is backed up usually - less important  when using a three-drive configurations.
How old, when last initialized (zero), and is it showing spare blocks being used? that last is the most indicative of failed drive.
Rare but a bad SATA cable or power (seeing how the cables are tucked away) is only way generally for multiple failures in same drive bay or computer. Note: early on in 2006-7 there were reports of some customers having motherboard and trouble with a drive bay , and t he problems showed up early.
Often though it is NVRAM or SMC related issue trigged by something else, a USB cable or device that is faulty, even a PCIe controller that is the culprit. And replacing cable, keyboard, device, and resetting SMC and NVRAM (often NVRAM needed to be done multiple times, but never keep resetting SMC) - unplugged and when you connect back up, do not install anything other than system, keyboard and mouse and see if that helps.
With a drive, likely the drive in 85% or more, is fine, but the directory is not, or it needs to be erased to rebuild all the system partitions.
1TB is small for TimeMachine. 350% of the amount of data, and always have free space for a full backup set of all the data. T.M. will try and prefers to automatically backup any and everything plugged in and connected, rather than my preference which is ASK FIRST to add a drive to TM backup set, otherwise leave it out. 600GB of data and system would mean 2.5TB drive, maybe 2TB minimum.

  • External hard drive compatible with mac

I recently purchased a Lacie external hd (the porsche design P´9220). Had some initial trouble with getting it up and running, had to switch primary partition hd to actually get the 1 TB storage amount. I did this on a pc in computer management, because I couldn´t figure out how to do this on my mac. Anyway, when I swiched the primary partition hard drive to the right one, I only had two options for formating, either NTFS or exFAT. I thought exFAT would work on mac, but turns out it doesn´t.. Is there any way I can format this hd to fat/ fat32 either on mac or pc?? The whole point of buying this hd was that I thought it would be compatible with BOTH mac and pc at the same time..
Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

    Nah:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two and size them to your preferences. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you created for Windows use, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the Format Type to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.

  • USB drives compatible with MAC and Win

Can anyone help me out. I need to encrypt my USB drive but such that it can be decrypted by both my Mac and a Windows machine.
    1) If I encrypt the USB drive using the MAC to create an encrypted disk image, will the Windows machine be able to access this disk image?
    2) Is there a decent USB drive on the market with encryption software compatible with both Mac and Windows machines?
Thanks for any help (and excuse my Mac ignorance !)

I have the same issue and ended up damaging my USB when Sandisk tried to format it so it can be used for MAC. Its very frustrating that all these big companies can't make MAC compatible software. What's more frustrating is that they advertise their product saying it works with WINDOWS n MAC but when you go check out the encryption software then its only windows compatible.

However, I have read that other users have had success with the DBT-120.
    Does anyone have any recommendations?

What exactly IS the mac pro/ bluetooth issue?
Some Mac Pros were (are?) shipped with incorrect labelling and connection of the AirPort and Bluetooth internal antenna wires. The causes reduced Bluetooth range.
