Help a new mac owner out!

this may be totally stupid-but today i got my first macbook and can't get online. When registering i didn't understand the questions over the connection, and somehow i bypassed it. I can get on fine by plugging in the cable from my dsl modem, but i know there has to be a way to get onlne wirelessly. Any help here? Thanks all, you are awesome!

Hi Landeau,
In addition to previous user post, there is big possibility that you have unsecured wireless network surrounding your area.
Or you have modem/wireless router in you possesion without you knowing it.
Check your modem, if there is any antenna pop out from its box, then you must be have modem that capable to create Wireless access point (WAP) without you knowing it.
If you do have that, and you have a bit knowledge of setting WAP, try to lock your wireless so only you and your brother can use it wirelessly and not your neighbor.
If you don't have that WAP capable modem, do as g_gilmore said: In the top right of your screen (where the date, battery, etc. is) you should see an icon for AirPort. Try turning AirPort on and seeing if you can connect to any of the available networks.
And choose and connect to one that is not require password.
Good Luck.

  • Help a new Mac owner out with my iPhone

Yesterday I purchased the new 13.3 Macbook, and so far I'm learning what all the new computer has to offer. I'm a new mac user, and all of this is new to me... heck, I'm just not very savy when it comes to ANY computer.
I'm at the step where I need to sync my iPhone to iTunes. I plugged in the phone, hit sync, and when it was finished - all my contacts were there, but all of the applications are gone.
Only the original ones remain, the ones that were there when I purchased the phone.
Is there a setting I'm missing here?

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only. When syncing iTunes content with iTunes on another computer, all iTunes content on the iPhone will be erased first.
You need to transfer your iTunes library from the computer you were syncing iTunes content with for your iPhone to your new Mac. If you live near an Apple Store, the store will help you do this with a new Mac purchase. The same for photos and any other data available on your previous computer that you want/need available on your Mac.

I participated in getting the free download of Mountain Lion for new Mac owners. It took me three days to finally get a code to do it and when I tried downloading it, the estimated time was 74 days 17 hours. Now an error occurred. What do I do? I am very frustrated and just want the great software to download in a resonalbe time!

Take your Mac to a location with a fast, relaible Internet connection that will be all yours during the duration of the download.
If you want to complain, PLEASE call Apple and do so.
Internet only downloads of OS X is completely stupid, it assumes everyone has reliable Internet everywhere and /or no data caps.

  • I am a new mac owner and want to purchase Office for Mac.  Thought I was told it could be purchased thru the mac store for approx $80 (word, excel, powerpoint).  It is priced at $150 at the mac store.  Any advice?

I am a new mac owner & want to purchase Office for Mac.  Thought I was told I could get it through the mac store for approx. $80 (word, excel, powerpoint).  However, it looks like the cost is actually $150.  Is there a better deal?

Here it is from a trusted vendor of Mac goodies for US$100:
Microsoft Office 2011 Mac: Home/Student Edition. Single User License.
I also see the Mac version offered about every other week at Staples for about the same price.
Understand that the 2011 "Home/Student" edition does not come with a mail client.MS dropped Entourage with the 2011 version.
I am running Office 2008 on a Late 2010  i7 Quad iMac and a Core 2 Duo MBP (both are at OS 10.6.8) and I have no complaints. If you want the Entourage Mail client, you can still get Office 2008 from the vendor I linked.
I wonder if someone quoted the US$80 price thinking of Apple iWorks.

  • Need help with new Mac Pro (2012)

    Hi for everyone!
Few days ago, I bought a new Mac Pro (Mid 2012) MD770LL/A for my recording studio. The workstation is really powerfull and silent, but it has one major problem for me: computer comes with pre-installed Mac OS X 10.7.3 Lion, and as I understand, I can't install Mac OS X 10.6.8 on this machine. In this case, some plug-ins and instruments, that critical for my works are unavailable for me now. For example - MusicLab RealGuitar and RealLPC thru the VST to RTAS adapter (I'm using Pro Tools in my studio) don't working correctly on a Lion OSX. Unfortunately, I can't find any solution, to fix it... Even on an official support website of that software developers. Secondary, I still need Rosetta for some applications.
In that situation, my studio can't fully work.
So, what I should do??? WHY is officialy impossible to install Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a new Mac Pro, if its components is absolutely identic with Mac Pro 2010, that supported Mac OS X Snow Leo???
    Thanks!
With a big hope for a help!
    Alexey

    Hi!
Good news for anyone, who wants to install Mac OS X 10.6.x on a Mac Pro 2012!!!
As it turned out, the original installation DVD disc from the Mac Pro 2010, fully compatible with Mac Pro 2012! The images of DVD is quite possible to find on the Internet. Just checked on my system - boot from the fresh-burned disc, and Mac OS X 10.6.4 installed without problems! After that, updated to 10.6.8 - and it works!
Personally for me - it is great news!
Everyone have a nice day! Thanks!:-)

  • HELP!~  new mac user with MAJOR external hard drive/iTunes problems

    Hi everyone,
I hope you can help me out. I just got my new Powerbook Pro 2.0. It is really nice, but I am having a **** of a time with iTunes. I had an old Sony Viao and my friend turned me on to mac. So here I am, new computer and new 80G iPod. I have 120G of music on my external hard drive that played music right from the HD on my Vaio with no problems (until I upgraded to iT7.0, then the music ran choppy, but thats another issue). No, thinking that the Mac and iTunes will work perfectly together, I plugged in my External HD, turned on all the equipment, the mac finds the HD and I can see the music. Good. So, I change the location on the preferences to find the music on the ExHD and nothing. Then, I read all the forums and all and try EVERYTHING, moving the .xml file to the dektop, restarting iTunes, changing the location again, NOTHING works. I am about as frustrated as I can be. With over 26,000 songs that I cannot listen to.... I am about to regret this discision to get the mac. Any ideas? I also tried copy the files in the iTunes folder on the mac to the folder on the ExHD, but i don't know how on mac (there is no copy and paste command when you right click the mouse). I know my frustration is because I am new and dont know all the tricks yet.
I wish I could just call my buddy, but I am in Afghansitan fighting the taliban and he is in Hawaii. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks

Select your ext HD and do a key board command - CMD+I (Get Info - File Menu). Under the Ownership & Permissions tab - do you have read and write access? If not give yourself that access. You may be prompted for your admin password.
If your ext HD is the same one you used with the Vaio then I am thinking your ext HD is formated as a FAT32 and not a NTFS. Mac can read NTFS but not write to a NTFS format disk. If it is FAT32 then Mac can read and write. If it is a HFS+ format (Mac format) then there is no issue of read and write unless the disk is locked.
To copy files from one HD to anorther on a Mac - all you need to do is select and drag to the new location.
Check the Help Menu's of iTunes and the Finder. There is wealth of info built into your Mac OSX.

  • Help Please - New MAC User - OS X 10.6.8 Freezing

Hello......New MAC user after moving from Windows and I have been delighted with the perfomance.  Out of the blue yesterday typing became hesistant.  Today Keyboard quit.  Changed batteries but still no go.  That was quickly followed by the MAC freezing up where I couldn't open anything, without doing a manual shut down, going through the white screen/flashing earth process.  I did a search and followed instructions concerning Disk Repair but I was only offered the Repair Permission option, which I did.  Rebotted but still the same situation.   Total MAC novice here so any advice would be appreciated but in understanable english.... .  Many thanks in advance.

Can't help with the keyboard issue, since I only use wired ones. For general info, see these:

    Hi jersey,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Pages '09 forum.
Is this strictly a Pages/HP Photosmart issue, or do other applications share this inability to print in colour to this printer?
About the only advice I can offer is to:
    1.
Check the HP site for any updated drivers for your printer. Download and install if any are found.
    2.
Check the printer's settings in the Print dialogue. Your printer may offer the choice, here or in it's utility application, to print using only the black toner cartridge.
    3.
Try opening Pages from a different user account, and printing a new document from there. Success would indicate the issue lies in your user account, probably in a corrupted Pages preference (.plist) file.Go back to your usual account, locate the file and drag it to the trash. Try printing again from your usual account.
If these don't help, I'd suggest reposting your question in the Printing, Faxing and Scanning forum in the Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard) section of Discussions.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • How can I sync my iPhone music to my new Mac with out loosing my the music I already have in the phone?

Bought a new Mac and iTunes won't let me sync new music to my phone because I used to sync it in my old Mac.  How can I sync with the new PC with out loosing the music I already have in my phone?

Copy everything from your old computer to your new one then sync.
Iphone will sync with one library/computer at a time.  Syncing to another will indeed erase the current content.

  • Confused. So a new mac came out? what exactly is the migration about?

Ok so I havent been to the apple site in forever and I c that they came out with a new mac, so do the old ones need any updates or new parts?? Im confused. What is the whole migration about? I havent done anything to my macpro since I bought it last christmas.

Hey Amanda, and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Great to see another Okie in here...
What exactly are you refereeing to when you say "What is the migration about"?
The prev responses are correct in the fact that you don't need any new parts for your Mac. Occasionally about every six months Apple as other manufactures will release a great new product that will make people water at the mouth forcing them to give in to the over powering urge to spend money, that's what they're all about... making money. Your Mac-Pro or (you probably meant Macbook Pro) will last you many years with the OS and hardware it has, but as tjk said you need to perform the Apple Software updates from time to time (the Mac is defaulted to update automatically) to ensure you have the latest and greatest software for the OS you are running.

  • Potential new mac owner

I am looking to get a new computer. Thinking about the new mac mini, mainly for the cost. My question is will this be enough computer for me? Primarily will be used for internet, photos, music and some video editing (standard). Storage wise I'm okay with, my main concern would be the speed. My old "pc" would take forever when viewing/editing pics. BTW, I'll be using it on a Vizio 21-inch display. Thanks in advance for your input.

    Hi there
The Mac MIni is an excellent choice for what you want to do - I use both Mac and PC and even though my PC on paper is the 'faster' computer (PC is 2.4Ghz Dual Core vs 1.83Ghz Dual Core Mac) I find my Mac Mini is the better performer. A lot of this is down to the superior operating system and the applications you get with the Mac. If my older Mac Mini can cope ok with music creation, video & photo editing I think you'll find the new breed of Mini's will be more than adequate for your needs.
Also I use a 22" monitor and find that the Mini can cope very well with the higher resolution displays.
    Hope this helps
    Jonty
