Help a Noob.  Quicktime and Square Pixels.

I can not figure out how to get my well proportioned 3.5 minute sequence exported to a Quicktime movie that does not look "squished up". The square pixel thing is getting to me. Anyone have a way to do this?
All I want to do is have a Quicktime .mov that I can distribute around my office for approval.
I am set to take FCP training in November, but I need to finish this sooner than that.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me!

Ok.
We assume the footage is 4:3.
Check if your timeline/sequence is 4:3. Select a sequence and go to the menu Sequence > Settings. You must NOT have checked the 16:9 anamorphic option. If you have, deselect it.
Go to your sequence in FCP select some clip making double click on it and go to the Motion tab in your Viewer. Check if in the Distort group you have '0' as aspect ratio.
Tell me what you found there!

  • Help the Noobie-Cut and Paste

Im new to Logic, coming from a protools/dp backround. Why is cut and paste so difficult for me?
Lets say I have a guitar part where the first verse is a better performace than the second verse. I want to cut a p[aste the 12st verse on top of the second verse.
I go to snap bar mode , highlight , copy , go to beginning of second verse , paste (in overlap mode). And everything seems fine. But once i click somewhere else in the track. The pasted region is hidden behind the longer original recorded region. What gives? Ive looked in the manual and cant find an answer. This is slowing down my work so much, please help!
    thx

*You can either select drag-mode "Crossfade" (next to the Snap mode menue) - L8 will then automatically perform crossfades between the region or you use overlap mode and draw the crossfade in by yourself with the "crossfade tool" from the toolbox.
*You can choose "tie Regions by length change" from the Region menue (that´s probably a poor translation from my german menue), L8 will then shorten your first region so it doesn´t overlap anymore (setup a keycommand for it if you wish). Anyway, L8 will give priority to the second region so the first region will be cut off from the Audio output when Region 2 enters as you can´t play two regions from one Audio object at the same time. If Region1 already has the exact lenght you want and fits with the lenght of your first verse you can also use the command "perform multiple copies of region" (you find that in the Region menue also, setup a key command for this too if you wish).
*You can just press alt+click on region (which copies it) and drag it to the point you want it.

  • Square pixels final cut pro and dvd production help

i know this is not the normal/prescribed way to do this.
i have some QT files that have been output from various programs at at 720 by 480 with square pixels.
I would like to use FCP to edit and out put the files to DVDs that can be played on computer screens and standard tvs. (i realize i may need two different output settings and two sets of DVDs.)
is this possible and what are the best sequence and audio video settings to use in FCP such that when the files output from fpc are brought into DVD pro the files for the computer playback is visually square?
    thank you kindly.
please only answer if you really know how to do this...

    hi.
    thanks for the feedback.
the are some programs like Flash that are widely used in the animation filed and that only output Square pixels. I know that Flash files have been used in broadcast work.
i am wondering if there is a output setting someone is aware of in FCP such that it would alter the dimensions in such a way that that the new files would not appear distorted. for example if you select the files in the time line and go to the motion tab and alter the aspect ratio to -12 you get something workable but with a letterbox look. I am wondering if there is another solution other that the one that you have made clear.

  • Square pixels and fields?

    Hi,
at the moment I'm downloading videos from various news sources and re-editing them to gain experience.
The edited vids would eventually be put on a webpages.
    Should I choose "square pixels"?
And how about the "field" ?
BTW I had a couple of files that GSpot couldn't read and I downloaded MediaInfo and really like it.
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Michael

    "Legality and copyright issues aside...".
The vids that I'm downloading have embed codes but I stopped using links several months ago because the links often when dead.
I do often tweak them though ;-)
The overall sound is more often than not about 4-6 db on the low side and the timing on some of the cuts is terrible.
When non-linear first came in a lot of younger guys took over from the older guys because they got a hold on the technology faster.
The problem was that they'd never learned how to edit.

  • Square pixel footage to DVD - scale and quality problems

i've got footage from DVDs that i've captured using handbrake. This gives me quicktime movies (mp4 format) that are 720 by whatever the height of the original movie - minus the black bars. So for a letterbox clip that i've captures the dimensions are 720 x 336.
I want to edit the clip in final cut pro and burn back onto DVD. The mp4 clip has been ripped using a high data rate and the quality is fine. If I set up the sequence settings to be identical to the clip (720 x 336, square pixels, field dominance none, output mp4) then it looks fine in fcp and doesn't need rendering.
But this file is no good to use in DVD studio pro as it stretches the clip vertially to meet the 720 x 576 DVD resolution.
If i change the sequence resolution to 720x576 it seems to letterbox it fine and now it needs rendering, but when rendered i get a lot of boxy artifacts appearing in the video (the footage has a pure blue background so really suffers from any compression issues)
How do i set this up to make a DVD
    DP Mirror door G4 867Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Arrrrrrr!
Sounds like we have arrrrselves a pirate!
Wether it be 4:3 or 16:9 you'll have to be puttin' that footage in a sequence that studio pro will be able to digest. You're going to have the bars regardless.
Figure on making it right for your final output.
I guess it's some kind of TV.
Still you can put it one of those two conver to MPEG2 and it'll work for ya just fine.

I backed up my movies and rebuild my computer, and after making sure i'm using the latest version of itunes and quicktime and and making sure i still had spare computer authorizations, i still get error 23132.  Please help.

I had this exact issue.  Spent over an hour on the phone with apple support, they couldn't resolve.  Here is what I ended up doing, that worked.
    1.  Turned iTunes match off on all my iOS devices
    2.  Deleted the offending playlists from the iOS device they originated on
    3.  Started iTunes, let it run (literally) for an hour before it became responsive.  First thing I did, before clicking anywere else was disable iTunes match.  If I clicked anywhere, it would clock for another hour.
    4.  Let iTunes run overnight, by morning it had cleaned out the repeating play lists.  This got my Mac/iTunes back to an operable state.
    5.  Restore iPhones from backup in iTunes.
What was causing my issue was a single playlist that was created on an iPhone, then suddenly showed up with several thousand duplicates on my other iPhone.  The culprit playlist did not, for some reason, duplicate itself on my two iPads.  Apple support seemed to think it was because the problem iPhone tried to sync the playlist to iCloud over and over again unsuccessfully, then it finally went through and populated the thousands of blank/failed playlists which then tried to propigate to iTunes and my other iOS devices.  Seems like a reasonable theory.
I have not yet re-enabled iTunes match.  So, no idea what will happen if I decide to go back down that rabbit hole.

  • Weird dots in QuickTime and Preview.  Possibly ColoeSync  Need Help

I have had for some time now these weird spots in QuickTime and Preview files when viewing them only. They only appear when looking at them with these apps. Viewing pictures in PhotoShop don't recreate the problem. I suspect it's related to ColorSync, but I have no idea what to try. I removed the profiles from My Drive/Library/ColorSync/Profiles and rebooted. The problem is still there.
Printing or viewing these files in other apps don't exhibit the problem so the files are fine. It's just displaying them with QuickTime & Preview that cause problems.
I'm so sick of this and would really like to get it fixed. Could anyone please offer a suggestion? I'd be extremely appreciative. Thanks in advance!

  • Bonjour help + clean uninstall and re-install of iTunes, Quicktime, and related components

    I am using Win7 x64.
To make a long story short, I unistalled Bonjour.  When the next update for iTunes came out (Ver. 10.4.1), I was unable to update due to the error message: "Service Bonjour (Bonjour Services) failed to start.  Please verify you have sufficient administrative permission and try again" or something along those lines.  After trying several things to no avail, I finally did a clean uninstall of iTunes, Quicktime, and all related components as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923.  When I then tried to reinstall iTunes and Quicktime, I got the same error message.  I know people have had problems with Bonjour before, but I couldn't find any info on why I am getting this after a clean uninstall or what to do about it, so any ideas would be very much appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Need Help With Windows XP and Quicktime

ok i click a video link in internet explorer and quick plays the video in internet explorer. i want the videos to be played thru Windows Media player instead. i have changed the video format on quicktime and everything and it doesnt change, it still plays thru quick time

If the page code is written to use QuickTime then it's plug-in will be used.
You can't play most QuickTime content files with Media Player no matter what settings you change in your browser.

  • AME - Windows Media export, default templates and non-square pixels

In Adobe Media Encoder the default Windows Media export templates have non-square Pixel Aspect Ratio.  In Windows Media Player 9, if you play AME's wmvs with non-square pixels all you get is a vertical line a few pixels wide (though they play fine in WMP10 & 11).
There is definitely a problem with non-square pixels.
Using AME, if you create a PAL wmv (720x576 with DV PAL P.A.R.) you get the display problem in WMP9, whereas a D-1 PAL wmv (768x576 with square P.A.R.) will display fine.  If you encode the same content with exact the same settings (codec, resolution, etc) with Microsoft's Windows Media 9 Encoder, the resultant output plays fine regardless of the P.A.R!
One for you chaps at Adobe I think:
If Windows Media Encoder can create WMP9 compatible wmvs, why can't Adobe Media Encoder?
or if there is a problem with non-square PARs, then why is it an option on export - remove it until it is fixed?
Any support would be greatly appreciated.
    Edmund Barton
I'm using Prem 4.1 with AME 4.1 against Windows ME 9.  WMP9 is the base player we have to support, so upgrading all the players isn't a option.

If you can't upgrade the players, then using Windoes Media Enoder may be your only option.  Adobe just came out with a 4.1 patch, so it's unlikely you'll see any more 'fixes' in the very near future.

  • Whats the math behind converting from square pixels to non-square...?

Does anyone know the math behind resizing a video from square pixel to non-square?
Say if I have a 720x480 4:3 video and I render it out as square pixels. So then I need to resize it down to non-square so that it will no longer be stretched....I know I can just use premiere or quicktime to scale it properly for me but what is the math behind it? I'll admit im no mathematician, all i know is that square pixels = 1 and dv = .9, how you go from there is beyond me.
Reason I ask is because I have a 800x600 video in square pixels and just want to know how in the world it makes sense that you change it to 755x600 and the stretch is gone. How does do you get to that number?
    Many thanks in advance!

I don't have CS4, and have only been scanning the CS4 forums; so there may be better links regarding this in this forum.  CS4 changed the par to a more "correct" option.  It is not .9 now but .91.  (See Dan's little "about" before the .9.)  And when you are dealing with 800x600, there may be other issues.
I like the  AE/Meyers explanations of all this (so also see the regular help for Premiere):
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103906c6dea-7f3aa.htm l
There are 2 pdf article links on that page.
Also see the free Meyers video on Lynda.com
    http://www.lynda.com/home/Player.aspx?lpk4=40550
EDIT: I missed the more relevant thing in Dan's: see the 10/11 as the multiplier rather than .9?  10/11 is the "new" .909090 = .91.
