Help! a persistent message locks up Network in System Preferences

I allowed an application (EyeFi Manager, which controls those cool SD WiFi cards) to get a Airport password from the keychain. Maybe it changed other things too, but now, whenever I try to access Networks in SysPrefs, I get a little window that says "Your network preferences have been changed by another application." Uh, o.k. But clicking "OK" doesn't clear it--it pops right back. I have to force quit, and thus, cannot access my Network pane at all. And I need to do that!
This is a Mini core solo, running Tiger, and a snow base station.
Airport does work, but this is driving me crazy.
How can I restore sanity?

Hi Jon, and a warm welcome to the forums!
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
Try this cure for Security update...

    Since upgrading to Lion OS 10.7.1, the wifi connectivity keeps blocking up intermittently and we need to manually keep switching on and off the wifi utility to get the connection back. even locking the preferred wifi network in system preferences does not help. This never used to happen with Snow Leopard

    This is a big thank you to Rys Sinnefeldt who posted this fix.
    Rys has made this fix very easy to do and takes literally 2 mins. It involves replacing the Atheros Lion driver 4.0 and replacing it with the snow leopard driver. Don't worry, Rys has made this so simple to do even I could do it and so far I have had no more wifi drops.

  • HT203210 Where is the show popup from network on System Preferences?

    Where is the show popup from network on System Preferences?
    Was checking Airport support for PPPoE disconnected message which directd me to Show Popup on network in System preferences and I had 1 option.  Show all.
    Would love additional info on why I keep getting this message - Could not find a PPPoE server.  Which interrupts wifi service to Network.

    PPPoE is a protocol used to authenticate a user prior to gaining Internet access used by certain ISPs. Typically it is used for DSL Internet service. PPPoE would be configured on the device that is directly connected to the DSL modem. This could be a router or computer.
    Do you currently have or previously had DSL Internet service? What is the make & model of the device that you currently have the AirPort Extreme base station connected to by Ethernet? Which exact model of the Extreme do you have?

  • Deleting a "Location" under Network in System Preferences

    Not certain if this topic should be here or under MBP, but here goes. How do you delete a "Location" under Network in System Preferences? What's happened, is that throughout the 15 months of MBP ownership and switching mobile phones pretty frequently, I've managed to acquire 4 different locations without intention, but only need one and would now like to delete the other three.
    thanks in adavance for the help
    Paul

    Choose Edit Location from the Location pop-up, then just select the ones you want to delete and click the "-" button.

  • Need Help with error message on the Network Systems Preferences, Please

    In Systems Preference, > Network, I get the error message "Your network settings been changed by another application," with an active OK button. However, when I click the OK button, it persists and does not allow me to access the screen. The only way to end this is to force quit Systems Preferences.
    Do you have any idea what is causing this freeze? I have a TimeWarner Internet connection (which I want to change to Verizon as soon as I resolve this). For a while I had Earthlink DSL which didn't work well at all. Could it be something with the not-used Earthlink or the current TimeWarner?
    Any ideas about the cause and, more importantly, the solution?
    Thanks,
    Jeanie

    My computers have not been networked, intentionally. I like having them autonomous. So I have a separate Internet connection for each. And maybe that's what I need to maintain.
    In the house is a Mac Mini and the house phone with new Verizon modem. In the separate office, I have my G5 tower, which is really my main computer.
    Was just on phone with Verizon Tech who did say that they do not support Mac. They made a decision not to because there are fewer of us. However, I can purchase a premium support which appears to cover such support.
    I've not seen the Verizon commercials, but I expect that they are filled with hype. The one I laugh at the most on the FIOS cable video is that they call their cable user interface "intuitive."

  • Network in System Preferences "Quits Unexpectedly" - Help !

    Hello,
    I need some help on a rather odd issue, yet annoying :
    When I open the "Network" preference in the "System Preferences" pane,
    the program quits and I get the fatal "Quits Unexpectedly" message followed by
    Apple's option to report the glitch.
    The problem is that I need to access to the network preferences in order
    to configure the machine access to internet...
    This is happening on my (wife's) IMac (Intel - OSX 10.5.5),
    I did reinstall OSX (archive - not upgrade) and
    would appreciate any help or ideas.
    Many thanks !
    ideas on how to solve this issue.

    Try moving this one to the Trash:
    com.apple.networkConfig.plist
    from the Library/Preferences folder and log-out/in or restart. If it doesn’t help, you can move the above preference list from the Trash back to its original place, replacing the newly created one.

  • Persistent Messages, What heppens if a system is started!

    Hi,
    I am new to JMS and trying to understand. I have a Web Service that put messges on a queue. Now on the consumer side I have a Message Driven Bean. What if my MDB is not available and the WS puts some messages in a queue. The messages are still in a queue but not consumed as MDB is not available. Now I restarted the whole system and server and redeployed the MDB but I don't see any messages being consumed by MDB even though there are some messages that are put by Web Service before starting the System. Are the messages lost if in a queue but not yet consumed and a system or server is restarted.
    How can I make the messages available in a queue all the time even after a restart. Here is a snippet of code that ques the messages.
    InitialContext context = new InitialContext();
    QueueConnectionFactory fac = (QueueConnectionFactory)context.lookup("jms/MainQueueConnectionFactory");
    QueueConnection conn = fac.createQueueConnection();
    QueueSession session = conn.createQueueSession(false, Session.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE);
    Queue que = (Queue)context.lookup("jms/MainQueue");
    QueueSender sender = session.createSender(que);
    MapMessage message = session.createMapMessage();
    message.setString("Subject","subject");
    message.setString("Content","Content");
    sender.send(message);If messages gets lost if the system or server is restarted then what's the point of Persistent Messages. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

    How do I set it never to expireBy setting the message time-to-live to zero. This can be done on the message and possibly on the connection factory. I'm pretty sure the default is zero anyway, but couldn't find this in the spec - http://java.sun.com/products/jms/docs.html
    I believe all the messages are by default persistentThis depends on your JMS Provider. See you providers docs for how to configure for persistent messaging.
    Where exactly in queue definition any small sampleAgain this depends on your JMS provider. I don't have experience of your app server so I can't provide and example - sorry.

    3500 to 8500 is not a message count tht needs to be worried about
    but to be on the safer side what is the average size of a single message?
    if the size is not a significant one u can go ahead

  • Deleted firewire in network under system preferences

    now realize it was a dumb thing to do. currently need firewire to transfer some files from my computer to my wifes imac. I've run first aid as well as latest DiskWarrior to no avail. I have both original 10.5 & 10.6 discs for the computer. can someone point me in the right direction on how to reinstall firewire?
    thanks for your help.

    I'm not sure I quite understand. You can't "delete" Firewire because it's part of the computer's hardware. There is no preference pane for Firewire. There is a networking option to use IP over Firewire that is configured in Network preferences. It's not clear to what you are referring nor what you think you deleted.

  • Network System Preferences Problem (Recent)

    If anyone has any idea of how to fix this problem I would be grateful.
    When I choose Network in System Preferences, a small window pops up in front of the main window saying "Your network settings have been changed by another application." I click OK and the same window pops up, over and over. It is stuck in a loop; I can't get past it. The main window (Network System Preferences) behind the small window looks right, with the normal messages. The only way I can get out of the loop is to force System Preferences to quit. My network connection is working (so I can post this), but I can't get into Network System Preferences. So, I can't change any settings, or even see what they are.
    I discovered this last night, when (apparently) something went bananas at my ISP and I lost the connection. The ISP was back on the air this morning, but this situation is unchanged. Previously I used Network System Preferences in setting up the connection (changing something after a previous ISP problem, over a year ago), as well as telling the system how long to keep the connection up before asking me if I want to remain online. I looked at System Preferences.app in the Applications folder, and no part of the package contents has changed in at least 1.5 years.
    Possibly some data file has gotten corrupted, but this behavior is clearly a bug, I would say. I have a DSL connection with EarthLink (if it matters), and the connection seems to be working normally now.

    Thanks for the suggestion. I found another approach (rather than trashing the files mentioned) by BDAqua) that seems to have worked. It is:
    Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
    I can now get to the Network panel without the annoying message loop, and so far I haven't seen any adverse effects. Does anybody know of a reason why this might cause a (new) problem?
    Also, someone (it's hard to keep track of the various discussion forums) suggested that, after going to the Network panel once, it's OK to go back to Security and uncheck the box. Apparently the problem will have solved itself. Does anyone have any comments about this?

  • "Application system preferences quit unexpectedly" Error message

    This is the message that I get when I try to open the destop and screensavers part of the system preferences. It also does a similar thing when I open photoshop and press command+O to open a file but not when I right click a file and open it in photoshop. It also closes unexpectedly when you try to "save as" but not when you press command+S to save.
    Please help!
    Error as it apears below
    Application system preferences quit unexpectedly
    Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
    Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
    The application Photoshop quit unexpectedly
    Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.
    Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple.
    Thanks, I can't live without Photoshop
    -IC

    That message means that the programs are crashing for some reason. I can't speak for Photoshop, but for System Preferences you may have a non-Apple screen saver that is causing the crash when the Desktop & Screen Saver pref pane tries to load. If so, go to ~/Library/Screen Savers (~ means your home folder) and remove anything you see. You can always add them back later.
    If that doesn't help, go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete these files:
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.plist
    Then open the "ByHost" folder in the same location and delete anything starting with
    com.apple.screensaver
    Hope that helps.

  • Strange Message in Systems Preferences

    My wife's Dell just died so I'm trying to set her up on my old Mac Mini running 10.4.x. After installing the latest security update, System Preferences Networks infinite loops to this button message: Network settings have been changed by another application. Once I try to access Networks in Systems Preferences and this message won't disappear, until I force quit.
    Any suggestions on how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    Launch Terminal on the computer. Issue these commands:
    sudo rm -R -v /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    sudo reboot now
    Provide the local admin password when prompted. If you haven't set a password, set one. You won't see the password being typed.
    On successful reboot, login and give the computer a desired name in the Sharing Preferences Pane. You should now be able to access the Network Preferences Pane.

  • Can I lock iCloud in system preferences

    I want to use the iCloud to track multiple Mac products that go out regularly as rental equipment. I have set up iCloud on all the Macs so currently I am tracking them but I want to be able to lock it within the system preferences so that you can't sign out. I'd like to know if it's possible so I don't have to use additional tracking software. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    Your profile states that you are using OS X 10.5.6, iCloud comes as part of the rate pertains system OS X 10.7.2 or better, if your profile is correct, that is why you cannot find iCloud in your system preferences.

  • Since my update, I can't adjust the volume from my keyboard...the volume keys have a locked symbol that shows when I press them.  I checked System preferences but can't find a way to get the lock off.  Thoughts?

    I can't adjust my volume from the keyboard volume controls... they seem to be locked.  I tried system preferences, but couldn't find how to "unlock" them.  Thoughts?

    Did you try unchecking this function?  It seems to work in reverse of what you would expect, or is that just my imagination?

  • Help! System Preferences keep shutting down.

    Everytime I go to System Preferences and go to change my screensaver an error message pops up and closes system preferences. Does anyone know why? Anyone know how to fix it or whats wrong? It's really frustrating me.

    Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter ~/Library/Preferences/ as the folder's location. When this folder has appeared, move the item named com.apple.desktop.plist to the desktop. Next, open the ByHost folder inside and move anything which has a name containing screensaver inside to the desktop as well. If everything works properly after moving those files, throw them away.
