Help, address book launches firefox

Everytime I launch address book, firefox boots too.  I believe address book thinks Firefox is my default browser, and I'm guessing the "Add URL to <browser>" menu item in Address book wants to connect to Firefox even though it isn't running, because my menu item says "Firefox".  However, Firefox is no longer my default browser, Chrome is.  Firefox hasn't been my default browser for months, and I keep setting Chrome to be my default browser, but the Address Book just doesn't listen.
I hate having to wait for Firefox to book just to find an address.  Help please.

Gaygilmore, have you had any additional insights into your problem, which I share? In my case I sync my address book through MobileMe and have the same data on two different computers. What's puzzling is that one computer launches Firefox when Address Book is launched but on the other I don't see this behavior. The two computers run the same OS X version, both have Chrome as the default browser and both have Firefox installed. Of course there are other variations with the apps, plug-ins and extensions installed on each computer so this is not a completely same to same comparison.
And are you really still running OS X 10.4.7?
Steps I've taken: 1) uninstalled Firefox and deleted the Firefox prefs file and emptied Trash. In this case when Address Book launches it is apparently still looking for Firefox so I get a dialog box asking me to indicate where Firefox is. 2) Deleted Quicksilver. No change. 3) checked selected URLs in the address book contacts after uninstalling Firefox. Clicking on a URL opens the page in Chrome. No love so far.

  • Address Book launches then locks up

Every since last update (07/25/12), Address Book launches then locks up on bnoth my iMac and Mac Mini.  Beach ball goes around and does not stop.  Only way to quit is to force quit

Will try PRAM reset.  Have done the SMC reset.  I am having this problem on both my iMac and my Mac Mini.  Both are running 10.7.4.  When I did the Repair disk Permissions I got a report that said; "Warning:SUID file "System/Library?CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDA A" has been modified and will not be repaired"  I then noticed that on July 25th I did a software update that included Remote Desktop Client Update 3.6.0.  Thought there might be a connection.  Symptoms are on both machines.

  • Please help -- Address Book Crashing on Launch, causing problems with Mail

    Problem:
Address Book crashes on launch. Mail crashes on launch as soon as it tries to access address book. Can't use either program.
    History:
First noticed problem after an out-of-hard-disk space problem. Had about 2 GB left on the 80 GB hard drive in my 1 GHz iMac G4. Was comparing two very large TIFF files in Photoshop when it crashed because it had used up all the available scratch disk space. Mail and Address Book were also open at the time, along with a number of other apps.
After re-starting, Mail began crashing on launch. There had been a message open at the time of the first crash, and it appeared that the crash was happening as soon as Mail went to Address Book to find the sender's image for that message. The crash report showed that Address Book was the thread that failed.
Tried to launch Address Book; crashes on launch.
    Both applications refuse to launch.
(Have also noticed that Safari crashes when entering text in a field -- good thing I have an iBook to use to post this plea for help!)
    Attempted Solutions:
    Scoured these discussions for suggestions.
    Trashed preferences, re-started & re-launched; no luck.
Repaired permissions and disk repeatedly until squeaky clean
Used Pacifist to re-install sync services, address book, mail; no luck
Re-run Combo Update PPC 10.4.6; no luck
Have now done a full Archive and Install, re-installed the 10.4.6 combo update and the most recent security update, and verified permissions and disk.
Problem still persists -- which suggests it's something in my User library, I presume, but I'm out of ideas. Very tired and frustrated -- please help!
I've copied the most recent pertinent information from Address Book's Crash Log and posted below. Let me know if I need to post anything else, or logs from other apps. Thanks for taking the time to look into my problem, everyone!

I'm no expert on Address Book, but I can tell you that the files involved in the crash could be HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and anything in HOME/Library/Application Support/AddresBook/. It looks like you have ignored this latest folder so far. I would try moving both items to the Desktop, restart, and see whether that stops the crashes.

  • Unable to access emails and address book using Firefox 5, but not using explorer

Since installing the latest updated version of Firefox, I can log into my Tiscali email account, but once there I cannot open my emails. Instead of saying 'You have (number) new emails' it says 'You have unspecified new emails'. If I click on Inbox or 'Check new mail', nothing happens at all. Also, if I try to access my address book either to read or edit it again nothing happens.
Emails works perfectly well using Windows Explorer, which would suggest that the problem does not lie with my ISP (Talktalk) or my Tiscali email account.

You can install both your accounts in Thunderbird and then simply move messages from one to the other. You then have the choice to continue using Thunderbird, or to switch using Gmail via its own website.
Address Books are a bit harder to transfer. I'd suggest you go to the msn account, in your browser, and seek options to download or export your address book there. I expect it will offer CSV as an option, and vcard format is a possibilty. Both of these can be imported into Thunderbird and into Gmail.

  • Address Book launches spontaneously, won't close

I don't even use Address Book; I use MS Entourage 2004. Yet now and then the fan on my Macbook starts running loudly and, when I take a look (opt-command-esc) I see that Address book is running. I try to close it normally and via Force Quit, yet it won't go away, remaining on the list and activated on the Dock. Anybody know why this program is launching itself and refusing to close down? Thanks.

Thanks, AK. In answer to your questions, no, it has not always been like this. Certainly it's been since I upgraded to Leopard, maybe even since an update of that. I can't figure what else I might be running that wants Address Book. I do have addresses in there, I think it syncs with Entourage.
I do now find that it closes eventually, but only after holding out for a long sullen interval following Force Quit.

  • Transfer Outlook Address book to Firefox

Need to transfer all addresses from Outlook to FireFox address book. Can't any guidance to do this.

Firefox does not have an address book, it is just a web browser and not an email program.

  • I cannot open my e-mail, make a reply, or access my address book in Firefox.

In Firefox I can call up my e-mails which I access from Comcast, but when I try to open them they will not respond to the usual double-click, and if I want to reply, I cannot access the reply page. Nor can I access my address book. I do not have this problem using Internet Explorer or Thunderbird. However, I much prefer Firefox over these options. Any ideas as to what is causing this problem will be welcomed.

  • Frustrated HELP Address Book

I have been trying to figure out how to add groups to my address book and I have just realized that when I bring the address book up I am missing the buttons on the outer edge of the address book. In other words, the + button to add groups and contacts is not there. There should also be 2 buttons on the top left corner and they are not there. I am sure that this is a very simple fix but I cannot find it and am getting super frustrated right now.
Please help before I blow a major fuse.
    Thanks

  • Address Book launching and closing at login

    Hi Everyone,
Address Book is launching and then immediately closing when I log in. I do not have it listed in my "logon items." Could it be caused by another program? I just recently installed Entourage, but I'm not sure if this correlates with that or not--it's possible I just started noticing it.
    Thanks a lot!

    Imac 20" C2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi nj.
You probably have a piece of software such as a Dashboard widget or a system utility that also opens every time you log in and that requires Address Book to be running for whatever it does.

  • Help Address Book!!!!!

Okay.........How do I recover an address book that had about 20 entries in it, but is all of a sudden empty?????
    Thanks in advance

    Scotty,
since no-one in charge is replying to you, the simple answer is go to your own backup- if you have any- because the AddressBook app is a dbase that is gone if its gone.
This is a very recent problem obviously- I've hardly ever relied on AB for anything, except remembering all my contacts in Mail and offering me alternate email addresses when necessary.
Now every custom address I've created has vanished- as of a new 'file' created yesterday at 0918 hrs; and maybe like you my actual database backup is about 6 months old, but since I dont have many that I store the damage is less than 20 contacts.
Bloody annoying all the same! dave

  • Help me please with Outlook Express address book recovery

I reloaded windows and  after restarting I could not find the  Outlook Express address book. I looked in my docs and settings/"name"/localsettings/applicationdata/identities.
There are a bunch of .DBX files t, but the contacts file is only 59kb. I don't know how to do anything with these files to recover them.

  • Repopulating itunes, address book, network problems, recovered data - help

    Hi
    This is a multi-topic question:
I had a dying HD. Used Install DVD/Disc Utilities to repair, then upgraded to Snow Leopard right after. When I rebooted, everything was gone. I had a new start-up disk/username account and no sign of the previous Home/Username. I used Disk Warrior and recovered all my files (I think). Moving things back in place is a challenge. Many problems.
    1. How do I move all my iTunes music back to the current Username?
    2. Where do I find the Address Book Data and how do I move that back the the current username?
    3. I cannot connect to the internet. Network diagnostics says "Internet failed, server failed" both wirelessly via Airport and when I connect via ethernet. My other Macs have no problems with the internet so it is something internal with this Mac.
    Any suggestions welcome

They said that MobileMe has a problem working with iTunes backup.
MobileMe has nothing to do with the iPhone's backup. Contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step with the iTunes sync process, but this is used when restoring an iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup only. This has nothing to do with syncing contacts direct with a supported application on your computer or over the air with a MobileMe or Exchange account.
Time Machine only keeps one backup and so once it backs up your copy of your address book, you're screwed.
    Baloney. Time Machine keeps:
Hourly backups for the last 24 hours.
Daily backups for the past month.
Weekly backups for all previous months.
You can go back in time to where your Address Book contacts are available with your Time Machine backup and restore from that.
Besides my Time Machine backup, I also use the MobileMe backup app to automatically backup my Address Book and iCal data on a weekly basis, and before I make any significant changes to my Address Book contacts - adding, deleting, or editing, I manually backup my Address Book data - at the menu bar go to File > Export > Address Book Archive. I have 3 backups for this data since the data is very important to me.
If your contacts are no longer available with your MobileMe online address book and no longer available with the Address Book on your Mac, with the Address Book launched, go back in time with Time Machine where your contacts in the Address Book were last available and select Restore. Done.

  • Address Book – 'Call with Skype' launches VMWare Fusion

Clicking 'Call with Skype' against a number in Address Book launches Fusion and starts up XP. I had the Windows version of Skype installed in XP under Fusion but have removed it using the correct Add/Remove Software process. Clicking 'Call with Skype' once again starts the dialling from the Mac version of Skype. Weird and unwanted..... Any ideas to prevent this?

Not a problem afterall, as it turns out. Only shame on me for being a newb.
Though during my puzzle-solving process came across the skype-plugins for the AB. They are located in /library/Address Book Plug-Ins/ folder and are not automatically removed, when uninstalling Skype.
    Names: SkypeABDialer.bundle and SkypeABSMS.bundle.

  • How can I copy my FF e-mail address book to newly installed T-Bird?

Win7, 32bit, PC. I'm moving to a new ISP (i.e. from BT to Plusnet). I've been using Firefox as both browser and e-mail client but to help me maintain clarity I want to use T-Bird as e-mail client. I would like to copy my address book from Firefox to Thunderbird but cannot find out how to do it. Can you help, please?

    Hello Humsh!
Not sure if I got your question correctly. I believe you were using Firefox to access a webmail from your current ISP (as far as I know Firefox has no built-in mail client)?
If your provider was BT (as you mentioned above) you need to export your address book and then import it to Thunderbird. I've check that BT uses Yahoo mail as backend (bt.yahoo.com) and their instructions on exporting contacts' list can be found here: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/manage/manage-10.html
Once exported, in Thunderbird go to '''Tools|Import''' and follow instruction on the screen. Also you might need to configure your Thunderbird to use configuration from your new ISP first. Check this help pages:

Hope above can help you move to Thunderbird smoothly!
