My wife has an iBook G3. After automatic update she got the red circle with a slash in it. She rebooted to the install disk and chose to archive and reinstall. After doing this and restarting, several applications will not work. For sure itunes, safari, iphoto and perhaps other she has not tried. The message she gets is: "The application cannot be launched because the system is incompatible." Suggestions? Thank you. Steve

To A Brody, thanks for the link to the backup info page..that was very helpful.
I'm having a panic with two volumes with 10.3.9 and 10.4.3 getting corrupted and impossible to repair or reinstall...and getting errors that "may be bad blocks...bad media.." and am backing up all the photos and music to a usb ext HD.
I'm only able to start up with os9 and am careful...perhaps not enough, I don't know, to not do anything to the osx files I can see from the other parition with os 9.
So far I've just dragged the files I want to the ext HD. I think I will do it again with a disc image as well, on the same ext HD, and burn dvd's later. So far, testing the backup with another mac in osx, I'm able to see the pictures with Preview, and import the music and play it...but yikes, no backup is like running with scissors. Two different friends are also backup less and they both use their macs for business! I hope to get them fixed up as well.
I'm going to post a new question about the phrase: "Mac OS X can't be installed on an ATA/IDE drive that is configured as a "slave", although it can see and work with such drives.": from one of the best books on OS X. Is this true?

  • Admin Password Not Working After Upgrade

So two days ago I decided to upgrade to Yosemite on my less than 3 month old macbook. Two days of pain.
After starting the upgrade, it got stuck on the reboot at the screen with the apply logo and the status bar at around 50%. I let it sit over night, tried multiple reboots, nothing would get it going.
I rebooted in recovery mode and did a reinstall. It ended up installing yosemite. However when I login none of my files or settings are there. If I log out and log back in again, my desktop shows up and my downloads (but no iPhotos).
When I go to users, I see two accounts with my name. 1 is the admin and the other says standard. The strange thing is the picture next to the admin account is the picture that shows up when logging onto the computer. However the current user shows a different picture. The problem is that I can't make any changes as my admin password isn't working (although I can login with it).
    Any suggestions?

    Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
      1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
      3. Click the "First Aid" tab
      4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
      5. Close the Preferences window
      6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
      7. Enter your username and password
      8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
      1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
      3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
      4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
      5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
      6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
          "New Keychain"
      7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
      1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
      4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.

  • 3rd party plugins not working after archive and install

    hi,
i have a few 3rd party plugins in my logic pro, such as all the native instruments, waves diamond, ik multimedia plugins, atmosphere and a few more,
i was getting an error on my g5 when i tried to run diskwarrior from the disk. it was the kernal panic message, it said i had to restart my mac, therefore i couldnt run diskwarrior from disk.
i did a bit of research and a few people suggested doing a archive install, so i did.
well what do you know, i had to re-install logic 8 again. other programmes such as transcribe, itunes idvd imovie etc were ok.
but logic didnt load up, o i had to re-install logic again,
also before i did that i checked to see if my 3rd party plugin were working in standalone, so i check all the native instruments and they seemed to work ok, T-racks deluxe works fine, so i thought they should all load up in logic.
once logic was installed again and had to get all the updates all my 3rd party plugins did not show up on my AU validation.
is there a way to get logic to see my 3rd party plugins or do i have to re-install all of them again.
    cheers for the help
    lib

Then check if the NI AU components are actually where they should be:
    HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components
If not copy them over from your "previous systems" folder which was created on your HD during the archive and install process.

  • Finder not responding after Archive and install

I recently encountered my first problem ever with my mac(new in '05) This is the first mac I have owned; I have worked on G3's and G4's in the past. After reading through many message boards and support pages I don't believe my problem to be similar but different to previous posts.
My problem started off with an OS problem that I was able to diagnose in the "help" book I purchased when Leopard came out. It said I should Archive and Install to remedy the problem and keep my files. I ran the archive the install (it gave me no options to preserve user or network settings). After Archive and install my computer started up alright, but I got the permanent beachball and the finder does not work. it is constantly non responsive. I can relaunch finder, but after it restarts it goes non responsive immediately once again. So I can't actually access my "previous system" folder to move anything over. I checked my dock items and finder, they opened, but my itunes asked for an update. I list of update items came up; I did the non-restart items first. they updated fine, (my itunes old itunes playlists are viewable but not playable now) then I did the items that required a restart. That is when I found out that I could not shut down or restart my computer with std. procedures.
Currently I can only access my spotlight or apple pull down menu if I am in a functioning dock program (safari or itunes, quicktime. etc.) after reading some more support pages it looked like the common thing to do was check permissions and verify disk. I did, I repaired two permissions and the disk was OK. I did look at the HD files, they were as I remembered, but unaccessible (greyed out) and the "previous system" folder was present. +It didn't look like I would expect. The HD looked same as it used to just with a previous system folder.+ After checking the permissions and verified the disk I tried a hard restart. It came back the same as before, unresponsive finder and only the few dock items worked along with spotlight. I checked permissions and disk verify again and everything was OK.
Sorry to be long winded I am trying to be thorough...In short, My finder does not work after doing an Archive and Install to fix my original problem (which has been fixed)...the remedy for an unresponsive finder is to do an archive and install. Is another archive and install really going to fix my problem? Can I archive and install OSX 10.4 and work my way back up to 10.5.6?
Secondly is there a way to restart my computer without doing another hard restart?

It won't let me add a new account. I am locked out and when I try to unlock it gives me the beachball and becomes non responsive after it tries to authenticate.
I looked at the log file, I am not sure what exactly to look for. I am no programer. I see an awful lot of negative wording. I see some errors like "error (-4956) locating menu extra but they are mostly under system preferences...I see some stuff in the loginwindow that says is not a full path... Otherwise, the only reference I see to the finder is when I have force quit the finder.

  • Changed Password Not working after restart[What to do]

Recently I've changed my password, but it's not working after restart.
I've noticed that, input option is not taking one of the password characters which is '!'.
I've the recovery disks, system accepts my fingerprint too.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Let me explain you what happened.
One evening I was trying to open my ThinkPad. Usually it asks for
fingerprint or password(I'm not sure which password, power-on/hard
drive). But this time I failed using my finger. and I tried with
    password, but could not recall.
Then I restart and again tried with finger, this time it worked. Now
after login in Windows XP I removed all old fingerprints and create
few new. When I create new, it was asking for password, or new
password to replace. As I could not recall the pass, I've given new
    password to replace.
Now to check I gave a restart. Fingerprint accepted for Power-on but
also asking for password again(Now I can see it's for Hard Drive). I
tried with new password. But it's not working. And even not taking one
    character ('!') of the password.
Now can you tell me, if I did change password for Hard Drive in the
last description. Or is that possible to change it from Windows XP
environment. Else it's possible that the Hard Drive password remain as
it was which has been set from ThinkVantage before OS boot. Let me
know if you've any query which I've missed.
    Thanks.

  • Help viewer does not work after update to 10.4.4

Since updating to 10.4.4 my Help viewer does not work, and all of the troubleshooting fixes suggested in other threads have not had any success in resolving this. I've noted that when I go to Users>Library>Documentation>Help there is no mac.help file - can someone tell me if that means that I've lost the file altogether and need to reinstall it? I get to the first screen of the viewer, but the links from there don't work. Thanks for any help that you can provide!

Thanks for your suggestion. I downloaded OnyX and ran the cleaning function. After restarting, I opened Help and once again the first screen appeared fine. But again most of the links did not work, though those under the "What's New" heading did work. I might add that I had previously tried a variety of suggestions posted in another thread, which included deleting from the caches folder in Home>Library several files such as com.apple.helpui and help.plist in the Preferences folder. (As noted in my previous post this evening, I also created another user but that also did not have any effect.) Any other ideas? Thanks

  • Applications not working after archive reinstall

After a new optical drive, the tech at the mac store suggested that I clear up some space and archive reinstall. I did, and now all applications are seriously crashing - For ie iPhoto's icon just bounces then notifies that it has 'Quit Unexpectedly', and is now constantly failing to open. iTunes says the file cannot be read because it was created by a newer version. I don't know why. I do have Time machine backup's. Any suggestions on a next step....
I had upgraded to Leopard 10.5.6 last year and it was those new Leopard Install disc that I used for the archive reinstall because the option to preserve user data was greyed out when I tried my original discs that came with the iMac.

Have you run Software Update yet?
There are frequent updates to the OS after the disc is released. The last release of Leopard is 10.5.8.
I just did an archive and reinstall from 10.5.1, and the Mac OS X Combined update for me is 768Mb!

  • Safarinow won't start after Archive and reinstall 10.3.9 to 10.3.7

I went to 10.3.9 and then Quicktime and Jam 6 stopped working, then iTunes.
The local Mac Genius Bar dude suggeted an archive and reinstall back to 10.3.7. (Roxio said I need to go back to 10.3.7 for Jam 6 to work.) OK now Jam 6, QT and iTunes work, but Safari and Netscape communicator either don't start or, if they do, I can't download anything because they both crash when trying to download.
When that happens with Navigator, I get the following crash report:

  • IMovie disappeared after archive and reinstall

This is strange...I did an archive and reinstall to clear up some problems that appeared on my new iMac after using the setup assistant. The process worked fine EXCEPT...iMovie and iWeb were deleted from the iMac and were not reinstalled!
These seem to be the only "iApps" that were affected. iTunes is still there, as well as iPhoto, iCal, etc. I even have aliases that still point to the missing apps.
How can I reinstall these? Thanks.

  • Restore "Previous Systems" after 'archive and reinstall'.

    Hi,
Long story short, I moved a crucial file and couldn't reboot... so I performed an 'archive and reinstall'.
This failed the first time, and worked the second time.
Now I can boot (into a fresh install), I moved the file back into the correct folder inside the "Previous Systems" folder.
Is there any way for me to revert/re-bless/boot back into this 'fixed' "Previous Systems" install?

Neither one of those files should affect your system and should be automatically rebuilt when you restart. There's no need to move them back. If things work properly in a newly created admin user account, then I suspect further plist corruption in the original account and suggest the following:
While logged into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option, recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. If the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.
See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4703015 for more details on this process.

  • After Archive and Reinstall...

I was having problems with my Final Cut software and QuickTime 7.3, and the only way to fix it was to archive and reinstall my OS. I have successfully completed this process, but I see that a file named "Previous Systems" has been added to my HD. I think this was used to copy all of my settings, etc. so that they could then be reinstalled during the reinstall process.
    Is that assumption correct?
Can I now delete that file?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Brian

    Hello Brian:
The previous system folder (a rather large file) is created when you do an A&I. It contains all of your programs and files, but it is not bootable. It is a sort of safety net "in case."
If everything is running well, you may delete it (I suggest keeping one about three weeks or so).
