Help!!! Administrator password not accepted.

Hi to all,
just a minor problem, since recently updating to 10.4.7 my beautiful machine asks me for an administrator password, which it will not accept.
i have tried the usual roots: - System Pref/Accounts change password. Also booting up from the Tiger install disk and selecting <Reset Password> both ways accept the original password and the change, but then will not authenticate afterwards...
Any ideas guys? I'm really stuck and need a solution fast.
Any help is much appreciated,
Thanks.
Danny.
iMac 1.83 GHz 512 GB RAM Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iPod 5G which will not work without password!

Hello,
I am having exactly this same problem on an iMac (OS 10.4) that had a previous owner. They deleted all of their files, and maybe did something to the permissions. Anyhow, I have tried several times to change the administrator password using the install disk, and everything seems fine until I try to unlock a lock or do something else that requires administrator privileges. It will not accept the new password. If I try to change the administrator password, it will not take the "old" password (which I had just set using the install disk). I cannot create a new admin user because I can't change the lock in Accounts.
I looked at the console log, and it has messages about problems authenticating related to my numerous attempts and failures.
I have looked at other discussions here, and not found anything that helps.
Here's something strange: when I look at the keychain access utility, it says "login" instead of my login name.
Also, this computer has automatic login, so I have never logged in with a password. Could this be the problem? I have thought of logging out, and then trying to log back in with newly set password, but I'm afraid of being locked out of the computer altogether.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Susan

  • Administrator password not accepted

    Please help!
My administrator password is not accepted. When trying to delete an internet plugin, I was prompted for my administrator password. I entered it in but I was greeted with 'You must type an administrator's name and password to make changes in finder' it did not tell me that my password was incorrect. I tried again a couple of times without any luck.
I have fiddled about and found that I can change my password and the hint in system preferences but it still always comes up with the same message when I try to make any other amendments.
I then installed my leopard disk, restarted the computer and held the 'C' key. this gave me the opportunity to change the password, which I did. I still got the same message when I attempted to make any changes.
After a couple of attempts of completely changing the password with the Leopard disc, I tried using the Tiger disk that came with the computer when I bought it. This has really messed it up because I now cannot get to the installation set up after holding the C key down during start up on either version of OS. It just sarts up normally.
What have I done? Any hints as to how to get i back to normal??

I have just found out what I did wrong. Somehow I had inadvertently changed my administrator to the 'System Administrator' account which was not visible in system preferences. When I did suss this out i easily managed to change my account back to an administrator. Phew!

  • Please Help! Passwords not accepted!

    Hi all,
    my nightmare finally took place
This morning after restarting my laptop (due to software update installation)
it won't recognized my password. The weird thing is that for the installation to took place I had to use it and it worked perfectly.
One last thing, on my laptop I have also a Guest account which password is my first name and it won't work either.
    What's happening???
Thanks for the help and support

I have some more detail now.
Behavior matches this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1413 but this isn't an iMac, nor am I on 10.5. (The disks have arrived but I need to finish a big job before upgrading.)
I have used Console to determine that it's the LoginWindow process itself that's crashing. Viz:

  • Signed up on furefox desktop 2/2. No problem. Today password not accepted. Asked for help 3 hrs ago and never got email and nit in spam

Was sucesssful signing up and using firefox on desktop yesterday. Today user name and or password not accepted. Can't get emails-nothing. Asked for help with password and never got email. This was 3 hrs ago and not in spam folder

Password for what? Signing up for what?
Firefox doesn't need a password for a person to be able to use it.
Firefox shouldn't affect your ability to get email - Firefox doesn't do email, but it will allow you to access your web-mail service.

  • Apple id password not accepted on icloud

why is my apple id password not accepted when I try to login to iCloud? The same password worked when I tried to login to support to post this question!

If Settings>iCloud is showing your old email address, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Gmail Error: Username and Password Not Accepted?

Okay, once in a while my e-mail actually works on my I phone but about 90% of the time I get this notification; Cannot Get Mail: Username and password not accepted. Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? Oh yeah, I'm using 1.0.2, gmail, and I'm positive my password and username is right.
    Message was edited by: one11archerave

I think the problem is solved. Last night I was on my friends computer and I accidentally stored my gmail password. I couldn't figure out how to delete it so I changed my password and then updated my iPhone with the new password. Ever since then I haven't had any problems.

  • Cant restore back up from iCloud as password not accepted

when trying to restore an 1phone 5s from iCloud back up my password is not accepted..i then go to iforgot, change my password retry the restore process and get the same issue.I have tried turning find phone off, starting again but still cant access back up because password not accepted.

I can't change my DNS settings. I'm trying to restore while setting up my phone. If I change the DNS settings while on the phone, and then restore the phone and try to restore from the back-up on my iCloud, it won't save that I've changed settings to use Google's public DNS. I would log onto my university's secure wifi instead of their guest wifi, but unfortunately I can't. because that involves an installation, which I can't do if I restore my phone and am trying to set it up.

  • Password not accepted - Pls Help!

Please help -- All of the information I need for life is stored in my Blackberry Curve.  I cannot access my phone, though, because it is demanding my blackberry password (whch it does not usually do).  Although I have given it, and even changed it a few times successfully via the online system from my laptop, my phone WILL NOT accept the password.
I only need access to my phone, not to a blackberry service, per se.  Is there any way around this?  I only have two attempts left!  Any help much appreciated.

Thanks very much for your reply.
I must admit that I understand very little about the BB system.  The password it requested was my user created one.  I entered it, but it would not accept it.  I changed it online, just to be sure there couldn't be any problem with the password. It still wouldn't accept it.
OK...I think you may have the two confused. The on-device user-created device-lock password is only on the device...nowhere else. Hence, it could not be changed online. Therefore, we must deduce that you mean your BBID credentials, and not the device lock password.
    houserrovers wrote:
It also stopped producing stars, in response to my entering the password.  The password itself would just appear, alternating with requests to type "blackberry" to continue.  That part worked fine, but then it would request the password again, and the same lack of stars & lack of acceptance of the password would recur.
This is as expected...for security reasons, the passwords are not displayed clearly...until such time as you fail too many times, and then it displays it as you type, as an aid to help you get it right.
    houserrovers wrote:
I finally let it wipe itself, unfortunately.  Now it seems happy again, and it accepting the password.
Well that is odd. From your first statements (changing it online), I would deduce the password in question to NOT be your on-device password, but rather your BBID credentials. However, failure of the BBID credentials does not result in a device wipe...only failure of the device-lock password results in a wipe.
So, now I am thinking that you are not sure which is which. The on-device password can only be affected on the device itself, and if too many failures occur, will indeed wipe the device. The BBID credentials are stored "in the cloud", and you can work with your BBID account via other means (e.g., PC/browser).
What I think happened is that it failed to accept your on-device password, and you mistakenly thought you could change that via PC/browser...you cannot. Only directly on the device itself can you do anything regarding the on-device lock password. And, as it continued to reject your attempts at the on-device password, it dutifully allowed only the pre-programmed number of attempts (normally 10...with the password displaying "in the clear" usually after 5 failed attempts), and when those were exhausted, it dutifully wiped itself clean of everything (a security measure, guarding your priceless data against theft of the physical device).
    houserrovers wrote:
Any further thoughts on what this was or how to fix it appreciated.  I did also try to back it up before it self-destructed, but with the phone attached, the backup system would also not accept the password (even though online it accepted it fine, and changed the password fine).
There is nothing at all to "fix".
When you connect your BB to your PC and if your device has a device-lock password, then that password must be entered on the PC before you can do anything with the device...yet another security measure.
The device has been wiped clean, and is as if it were brand new, never before configured...none of your data, none of your added apps, etc...just like it was fresh out of the box. If you have no backup from which to restore to the device, then there is nothing to do but start over, just like you did when you first obtained the device.
    houserrovers wrote:
I am not sure what the BBID password really is, btw.
The online password you changed was (I surmise) your BBID credential...but has nothing whatsoever to do with the on-device security lock password. Your issue was caused by the on-device password, which you could not affect via any online means.
If you are not sure what your BBID credentials are, refer to the link I gave you above, as it contains much useful information in that regard.

  • Can't install because of Administrator Password not working

Hi--I can't install anything because my administrator password is not accepted. I get a message that says something like this software requires Administrator or higher level privileges. I've checked it under "Accounts" in System Preferences. I've even changed it there, then changed it back, and I still get the same message. Help!! Janet

First off, what OS version are you running?
Second, are you saying that the installer application or something else is rejecting your password, or doesn't give you an opportunity to enter it? Where are you trying to install something, & what is it?
You should see a dialog box asking for your password with info about what app is asking for authentication, or at least be able to tell us what app is running (from its name appearing next to the Apple logo in the menu bar).
Depending on your situation, a permissions repair in Disk Utility may help.

  • Hard Drive password not accepted in new W530

I am moving a hard drive from a W500 to a W530 laptop.  The hard drive has a password on it and it works fine on the W500. When I put the drive in the W530 laptop, it does not accept the password on boot up. If I move the drive back to the W500, it all works fine.  This is a 1TB drive, so I'm hoping I can still use it! Thanks for any help here.

Good afternoon and welcome to the community.
Since the HDD password is accepted when it's installed in the W500, why not pull off the password in BIOS there, reinstall the drive into the W530 and then set the password in the W530's BIOS?
    Regards.

  • ID password not accepted anymore (once worked)

    Good morning,
I am kind of desperate...and I hope somebody is familiar with this problem.
I have adobe reader 11 XI, the latest version.
I am taking a trainingcourse at Learningtrain. They provide lessonmaterial with certificates / id only.
I created an ID and sent that to my teacher. fyi: I was strongly advised to switch off the automatic update option..as adobe deletes id's... and i did.
The teacher had it all set up. And it worked! I could succesfully open the material with my password.
    now the issue:
But it only worked once! Very strange. the ID is still there, but adobe does not accept my password any more
so i cannot open the file anymore. My home work is due today... and it is a lot ;-)
I have checked and double checked my password and is must be correct.
My teacher advised me to delete this id, and to create a new one. but that does'nt work as reader still askes
for my password when i want to delete the id.
so i decided to deinstall reader and install again (who knows...) but it lookes like i cannot delete it.
fyi: I also have adobe acrobat pro on my pc as i have the whole adobe css range. but I have exclusively used the reader.
    Hope you can help me.
    Kind regards Asha

Well, if you can't uninstall Reader, you probably have something wrong. But, if you were advised against updating, uninstalling will surely be worse!
I'm afraid I don't know what kind of password this is, there are so many possibilities. What does the prompt say? A screen shot would be good (BUT DON'T TRY TO EMAIL IT IN REPLY).

  • User password not accepted after migration

Source: iMac Lion OSX.7.4  Destination iMac OSX6.8
Problem: user password is not accepted after migration
What I did: Tried to migrate over the LAN, but in the migration assistant the other Mac was mutually never recognized. (Did migrations several times successfully in our LAN before). Last time the LIon Mac was the destination, who is now the source.
I backupped then the  user with Time machine on the Lion and installed it with the migration assistant on the Snow Leopard system. As as the password was not accepted, I repeated the backup/migration process once. No help
I reset in System Prefs/User accounts the password of that user. But cannot login either
First time, that a migration process fails for me.
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks
    Urs

The target computer itself has admin accounts thats not the problem, I can access it. The issue is that the migrated additional user account is not accessible with its password.
I have found here an istruction how to reset a password in single user mode.
    http://www.macyourself.com/2009/08/03/how-to-reset-your-mac-os-x-password-withou t-an-installer-disc/
But that does not help either. The answer after the dscl -passwd command is that I do not have access (or similar, I don't remember)
My guess is that backward migration (Lion to Snow) causes the problem. May be I need to create the user freshly and to copy his documents manually

  • Password not accepted by appstore

I wonder why all apps which demand Aplle ID and password like iCloud, Apple support ect. work well on the same imac, but only AppStore DOES NOT accept it (message "password not correct").
I also reset my password - but no result. All works fine, except appstore :-( Antivirus and firewall are switched off. I also tried several suggestions from support community, like updating with MacOSXUpdCombo10 - no way, it won't work. I really need some help !

Try deleting the App Store cache...
Quit the App Store if it's open.
Ppen the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/Cache.db
    Click Go
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Relaunch the App Store.

  • Apple id password not accepted after ipad update to ios5

So I've just upgraded my iPad 2 with ios 5 and the apple id password doesn't work.  I've reset the password 4 times now and still it's not accepting it.  I've turned off the iPad and tried again and still no joy.  Any ideas?

Well this is simular to the problem i have had in rencent log ins on apple. 1. Is the email correct? 2. Did you type the password correct? (There HAS to be an upper case letter in the pass because apple accounts' passwords REQUIRE at least one uppercase letter) If this was not helpful please try again or add more details next time.

  • Admin password not accepted anymore - but it's correct

    Hi,
i have a strange problem in Lion 10.7.5:
My admin password is not accepted anymore in Lion. Whenever i'm asked to enter the Admin password, the window closes (therefore: no "wrong password" message or something else) but the process isn't continuing (for example an installation). There is no change or progression.
The password is definitely correct, i was also able to change it or use it in the terminal (where it is accepted). But i'm still not able to use it within Lion.
Tried also to boot in single-user mode and change the password there via "passwd username" but i'm getting a "The daemon encountered an error processing request" error message.
Read somewhere else, that i should repair permissions and/or keychain first aid. Tried both but the problem still exists.
Does anyone have another idea? I really don't want to restore my system... Actually, how can i do this without an installer disc? Purchased my imac with lion pre-installed - i guess i would have to reinstall all my applications?
    Thanks for your help!
