  • After latest updates, cannot shut down or restart, takes me to white screen

I have a new MBP retina and after the latest Mountain Lion updates which I seem to remember including an iPhoto and Aperture update but also seemed to "flash" the EFI? (not sure), but there seemed to be some OS update included. Either way, my first initial issue was that when I clicked on my user account and typed in password after boot, it took me to a dark gray screen and just stayed there. I finally was able to log into guest account and switch over to my desktop then fiddled with resolution settings and background and shut down applications and rebooted. I can now log into my main user account but I cannot shut down or restart from any account. It will take me to a white/gray screen and hang there perpetually until I hold down the power button.
I've tried resetting PRAM before and after removing all cables for 2 mins. The issue persists in both my main account and the guest account. The computer simply will not shutdown or restart as it takes me to a white screen.
    Ideas?

Hey guys, unfortunately I've had to re-install Mountain Lion to get rid of the issue, but here's my experiences after trying many things and contacting AppleCare...
First, I had Lion and had upgraded to ML. They had me go do the following with limited success:
    1) Reset PRAM (no effect)
    2) Recovery Disk and repair permissions (no effect)
    3) Went to system /Library and User /Library and basically we went through several attempts at removing various files from (/Library/InputMethods, /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons") Once I had essentially removed every file and dragged it into the trash (without deleting), the issue was resolved. So, it seems to point to an application that was not fully supported or giving problems within the ML environment. The plan was to drag them one by one back and do reboot/shutdown until I could isolate the application, but rather than do that, I just did a fresh install to take out any variable that could be present from having to do a Lion/ML upgrade. I was able to put a fresh copy of ML on the computer through the Recovery partition after establishing connection to my router. Everything is working fine now.
Anyway, hope that helps some of you. It was a frustrating experience but seems to point to application issues wih the OS and not the OS itself. I think developers are still rushing to catch up with full ML support and so you might find yourself having many new updates in drivers or applications over the next month.

Adobe Reader is free. It always has been.
You have obviously downloaded and installed Acrobat (30 day trial version) and the trial period has expired.
You need to uninstall Acrobat (using the Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features [Vista/7])
Then run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
to completely remove the Acrobat installer files.
Then download Reader 9, install it, and go about reading PDFs for free.
EDIT: Please, please please.... do NOT post a phone number in the forums.
You're inviting trouble if you do.

  • Problem with my Lumia 928... started after Amber update.

First, I to state that I love my Lumia 928 and the Windows Phone 8 OS. Second, I've been a Third-Party Microsoft developer for over 14 years and just started developing for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. So, I'm not a normal consumer but one that will try everything in my toolbox before asking for help or even writing posts like this.
    History:
As of October 6, 2013, Verizon is sending me a new phone (not guaranteed to be new. ) to see if that fixes the issue
Used for work and personal emails so I can't just go and do a "hard" reset without have extreme headaches.Last resort before I get my "new" phone, I've broken down and started doing a "hard" reset (actually this is my second time).
No damage to the phone (Verizon employee has confirmed these, hence the new replacement)
    No cracked screen
    No frame cracked
    No water damage
Shortly after the Amber update, I started having problems. In order of oldest issue first.
Lock upsRandom apps just freeze. No rhyme or reason. No pattern. Just all over the board.
No touch responseSide buttons work but that does be no good when I can't select anything on the screen. Solution, "soft" reset and things are good... for a while.
Phone call speakerStarted losing phone calls. Thought it was a signal issue until I noticed that the call were not actually dropped. Speaker just started cutting in and out (completely) and sometimes it would just dim to almost nothing and then come back.
    Microsoft account
This is new as of October 5, 2013
October 4, 2013, nothing was wrong. Then the next day, my Live account associated with my phone stopped working. Keeps saying "Not up to-date". Had to create another account to get my emails. As of today, it's still not working. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the error code so I can't post that here.
Is anyone else experiencing these issues after the Amber update and if so, what did you do to resolve it (if you did)?
    Thanks,
    Stu

The Amber update came to our Lumia 928 and we had just activated it like one or two weeks prior, so we were just getting to know the phone.  In answer to your difficulties following the Amber update:

Lock upsRandom apps just freeze. No rhyme or reason. No pattern. Just all over the board.  The only "freeze" or app problem I recall is the GREEN SCREEN when opening the camera, happened once, and a power off and restart fixed it.  The problem has not come back, to date (this was several weeks ago).
No touch responseSide buttons work but that does be no good when I can't select anything on the screen. Solution, "soft" reset and things are good... for a while.  I have heard of this happening to others, but I have not personally experienced the screen freeze issue.

Speaker just started cutting in and out (completely) and sometimes it would just dim to almost nothing and then come back. I've had this happen on a couple of calls - the caller becomes very garbled and static filled.  I've had to hang upand call back - and they say the same thing happens on  their end, my voice is all garbled, like I'm underwater or something.  Not all calls, and not frequently, but maybe once every couple of weeks.

My screen is cracked due to a drop, prior to the Amber update.  (Yeah, it was nearly brand new when I dropped it   )  That doesn't seem to affect the overall function of the phone though.
So, to sum, I am experiencing some of the issues you described, but I'm not sure it's Amber, maybe just the phone design itself.  I don't know that a "new" phone will resolve things either.  Please do keep us posted...

  • Dreaded SP3 "Install Updates and Shut Down"?

Help!  My t400 just started insisting as a default choice "install updates and shut down" when I try to shut down.
It used to just go with the last thing I chose - so if I hit the off botton last time and said restart, that would pop up this time.
NOW, it wants to "install updates." What updates? I did something in windows update that was supposed to block the installation of Service Pack 3, but now I'm scared to death that SP3 is trying to hijack my machine.
Is there a way to a) find out exactly what updates it wants to install, and b) go back to how things were - when I hit the power botton my last shut down choice (sleep, restart etc) is what comes up?????
    Thanks!

I am sorry but this is NOT an answer.
You're correct. It's not. Microsoft has some overzealous contractors who seem to think any response is "the answer". I've unmarked the post, because, in fact, it was merely "additional information" which may or may not have addressed the
    original issue.
I, like the original poster, have several computers that do NOT offer 'Install Updates' in any of the power menus and definitely do NOT install the updates during either a restart or a shutdown.
Now *THAT* is an entirely *DIFFERENT* situation than what the Original Poster has offered here, so the appropriate thing for you to do is to start a NEW THREAD and fully describe the environment and symptoms of the problem and what you've done (if anything)
to try to identify, isolate, or remediate the undesirable behavior.
The PCs I have are Windows 8.1 installed from a partner copy of Windows 8 and upgraded.
I'm intrigued with this "partner copy of Windows 8" thing. Have you asked "the partner" what they customized in the installation image before you actually installed the product???
Can someone please offer a SOLUTION as opposed to parroting what SHOULD happen.

  • Since upgrading to iOS 6,my 4s freezes up, so I cant submit my passcode. Updated apps shut down unnexpectedly.  Another quality miss, Mr. Cook?

Since upgrading to iOS 6,my 4s freezes up, and  I have had to restore it once already.  Today it looks like I will need to do it again, as I cant even submit my passcode after entering it. Updated apps shut down unnexpectedly, including newest versions of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIN. I thought this new iOS provided GREATER integration with Facebook?  Instead,  I am forced to access it on other devices and "gasp" my Windows PC!   More quality misses on top of the Maps fiasco, Mr. Cook?

    Try:
    - Reset the iPhone. Nothing will be lost
Reset: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPhone.

  • Windows 8/8.1 - No Option for "Install Updates and Shut Down"

We’ve got a handful of Windows 8 workstations and I’ve noticed that users don’t get the “Install Updates and Shut Down” option when they shut their systems down. Nor do they get the updates icon in the notification area.
Instead, all they get is the following message at the logon screen:
There is no way I can expect my users to do this.
I need to ensure that the updates are installed when the user shuts down.
There must be a way of configuring Group Policy to allow Windows 8 workstations to prompt to install updates when the user shuts down.
I cannot implement an option whereby updates are installed automatically without the user being aware. If updates start installing automatically then there is the potential for loss of work if a user is away from their desk for a long period of time and
their system just restarts to complete the installation.
Our current group policy settings are below. This works fine for the Windows 7 workstations.
I presume others have experienced this? Can anyone offer any guidance?
    Thanks

  • Roboformtaskbaricon process will not close after firefox 9 is shut down

    Hello,
The roboformtaskbaricon.exe (v754) process will not close after firefox 901 is shut down. Although I could be wrong, my guess is that firefox is pushing this process out of firefox, forcing it to run on its own. If it's a roboform issue, then I will contact them.
    Thank you, bheart

On the page below, scroll down to "RoboForm Controls", then scroll down to '''''4. Taskbar Icon''''' under that heading. It sounds as though this may be the item to which you are referring. From the name of the file '''''roboform<u>taskbaricon</u>.exe''''', it implies the Windows Task Bar rather than the Firefox toolbar.

For clarification of '''''roboformtaskbaricon.exe''''', its function and whether it should shut down when exiting Firefox, contact Roboform Online Support and leave full details of your question:

Every time I restart the computer, I have to re-change the 'open with' settings to files. How do you get the Mac to remember the settings after the computer is shut down. It used to not have this problem.

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    on Terminal does nothing.

I couldn't remember ipad password. After six goes it shut down. Followed instructions to go back to scratch. Tried to connect to icloud and itunes. Not much success.
Completely new to this. Interested to see what ipads can do for education after supplying fifty or so to isolated schools

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. If you did not do step 4 properly, start all over again.

While performing a system update, I shut down my iPod touch. Can the pictures on my iPod be recovered if my iPod was not backed up?
iPod is fourth generation, the system update was a little over half complete.
I want to get the pictures off the iPod so that I can keep them. Is there any way to do this?

    Maybe,
    - if when you connect the iPod to your computer you can make a backup? If yes yo can restore from that backup
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    - Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backup dated when you started the update. the first stiep of an update is iTunes making a backup.
    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:

  • ITunes will not shutdown I have to Contrl-Alt-Delete and end itunes.exe and itunes help to get it to shut down and stay closed. I did a system restore and went back to 10.5.1 version and updated to 10.5.3 no dice Windows 7 64 bit

Itunes will not stay close ever since I updated to 10.5.3 version. I try to close program and it pops right back up! The only way to close is open tack manager and stop the itunes.exe and the itunes.help then it will stay close. I did a system restore back to the earlier version of itunes but problem presisted. I finally did the task manager again and downloaded the update to 10.5.3 and this seemed to resolve the problem for awhile but now it is back! Is anybody else experiencing this problem? and where you able to correct it? I'm running Windows 7 64 bit have never had a problem with anything till now. I ran scans of my machine no viruses.

    Hi,
i have exactely the same problem.
After the update to v10.5.3 iTunes isn't shutting down anymore. I have this error on various Windows versions (XP SP3, Win7 x86, Win7 x64.
On my private Notebook v10.5.2.11 still works! I won't update iTunes there - not even for a test .

  • After 10.5.8 update no shut down, Finder, Dock, program folder issues

    Hi all,
I've seen and read similar topics to these issues but as the given tips couldn't help me I open another topic.
Yesterday I installed the 10.5.8 update. Since then I cannot access the Dock, it even doesn't show up, the Finder does not let me access the program folder and my Mac doesn't shut down at all, only by using Contol, Command and Power (sorry, does not know the proper terms in English).
I tried to repair the disk by using Disk Utility from the initial DVD and it did repair a lot of stuff. In the end, it shows "Keys out of order" in red and that my disk could be repaired but one volume couldn't. If I try to repair permissions it doesn't even start saying something of "... inaccessible ...".
After trying this no change in my issues.
    What could I do more?
Thanx for any tips and help
    Steph

You can find the directions here.
Good luck and let us know.
EDIT: Erase the Disk with DU, yes. But don't install the system, if you want to do a full TM restore.
