HELP - Airport remains solid amber

I've just bought the Airport extreme and when I plugged it in for the first time, for brief moment I saw green and then solid amber and it remains like that for hours and hours without changing.
anyone got a solution?

This Apple support article explains meanings of status lights
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Airport/5.0/en/status.html
It states that a solid amber status light means "AirPort Express is completing its startup sequence." If your new AEBS is still showing that after some time then it is not completing startup.
You need to do more investigation / provide more information. For example:
1) can you connect to the AEBS with the AirPort utility?
2) did you install the software on CD that came with the AEBS before powering it on?
If you can connect with your computer (is it a Mac or PC?) and run the AirPort utility, and you can see the AEBS on the list, then following instructions in this article...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305101
and getting to the summary screen and then double-clicking the amber status light dot the AEBS will tell you what the issue is.
One point, if you have a cable/xDSL connection with a modem you will need to make the modem 'aware' of the new AEBS. This is usually done by powering down the modem, waiting for a few seconds and then powering up the modem again. Then I would power down and up the AEBS.
Regardless, you need to see if you can get into the AEBS with the AirPort utility (only use version 5.2 - on the CD - or above), to see what the AEBS is reporting.

  • AirPort Extreme - Solid Amber

I've just bought the Airport extreme and when I plugged it in for the first time, for brief moment I saw green and then solid amber and it remains like that for hours and hours without changing.
I can not connect to it using airport utility. I have tried to connect the Airport to my Macbook Pro and NETGEAR router using patch ethernet cable but to no avail.
    anyone got a solution?

The solid amber means you don't have security enabled. Use the Airport Utility to configure your base station and enable WPA2 security. For more information consult the User Guide and this article.

  • HT4600 AirPort Extreme solid amber. Stuck.

Anyone able to unbrick AirPort Extreme?  It is less than 2 years old with 2TB drive. Suddenly stopped working and factory reset, holding reset down during power cycle, unplugging hard drive haven't helped.
On power cycle, led is green at first, changes to Amber after 2 secs and stays amber for hours.
Connected to Ethernet port on my Mac and no Ethernet signal.
Like the manual says, it is stuck in startup mode.
I debated buying another AirPort Extreme, but got a Netgear instead for less and back online.
Curious if anyone got a fix to unbrick apple device.

I would not think the power supply needs replacing. But the hard disk might.
I am a bit shocked that an item 6days out of warranty and Apple refuse to deal with what is plainly a faulty drive.
Do you have applecare?? Did they even suggest or ask about your other products?
Applecare will cover your TC up to 3years.. along with a computer. The rules are complicated so ask first.
One way we have suggested to people.. is buy the cheapest product with applecare that covers the TC.. in most markets that is an Apple TV. As long as the TC is less than 2years either side of the purchase of the device with applecare it will be covered. But only up to a max of 3years.. ask before buying to make sure they agree.. sometimes you need to help the staff by quoting the T&C of applecare warranty for them.
Do not open the ATV.. once you have your new (replacement/refurbished) TC.. you can sell the ATV on ebay etc unopened.. get most of your money back. It is hard to have to use tricks like this.. but that is the world we live in. Be polite but do not roll over.

  • Time capsule set up- solid amber... help!

I have just bought a new Time Capsule- have connected it to my wi-fi network through the ethernet cable but the light on the time capsule remains solid amber! I have tried to scan for the device using airport utilities but can't see it don't know what to do as the instructions which came with the device are too cryptic for me to work my way out ...

    Welcome to the discussions!
Power the TC down for at least 30 minutes, then perform a factory default reset on the device.
When you are ready, hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the power back in to the TC.
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds.
If you continue to see a solid amber light after several attempts, you have a defective TC that will need to be replaced.

  • My Airport extreme light is solid amber

The light will not turn greeb

Pull the power cable from the back of the AirPort Extreme
Let the Extreme rest for 15-20 minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the AirPort Extreme and keep holding it for an additional 7-8 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back in to the Extreme.
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 30 seconds for the Extreme to display a slow blinking amber light.
If you try this a few times and the light remains solid amber after the reset, your Extreme unfortunately has an internal electrical problem and it will likely need to be replaced, since Apple does not offer repairs.

  • HT3728 Time Capsule LED is solid Amber, will not show up in Airport Utility after any resets.  Ideas?

Went to update my TC after adding my AppleID to the "Back to Mac" menu and in the Airport Utility screen a meesage popped up saying "An error ocurred while reading the configuration" and the TC disappeared from the Airport Utility screen.  Now there is just a solid amber light.  Unplugging the unit for over a minute and then plugging it back in has the same result.  A soft reset does nothing, a hard reset does nothing, and a factory reset gets the amber light blinking but when I release the reset it goes back to solid amber.  None of these resets gets the TC to show up in the Airport Utility.
    I appreciate any help.  Thanks.
    Model: A1409 Time Capsule 2TB

The solid amber light is an indication that the TC cannot get out of startup mode, likely due to a power supply component failure.
Solid amber is not power supply.. it is a dead hard disk.. the TC cannot finish its boot if the hard drive is not working.
    Jeepaxle
If the TC is in warranty or you have applecare on any computer Apple should replace it..
Otherwise it is the poor WD green drive they now use..
Open the TC and replace it.
Sometimes a low level format will revive them.. but I never trust a drive again that died.. Look for a 2TB hitachi or Toshiba.. (same thing). Far better than WD green.

  • Time Capsules solid amber, can't connect or see with airport utility

Yesterday, my internet (both wired and wireless on different computers) suddenly went down. My network could not be found. This happened 2-3 times with outages of about 5-10 minutes each. Later, it went down and hasn't come back up since. I have two TIme Capsules on the same network and both simultaneously went solid amber. Additionally, plugging my MBP into the primary time capsule via ethernet does not reveal the TC in airport utility. My internet is fine as I can connect to my modem via ethernet just fine. This is what I have tried...
    - deleting the system config folder
    - unplugging time capsules
    - restarting my computers (currently 6 macs on the network).
Not sure if this matters, but my computer that is connected wired normally, was just updated to Snow Leopard. I haven't updated the others yet.
Please help! I can't get my work done without this. Thanks

Hello okiska. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
under system preferences is says "airport is connected to the network", and Airport utility says "your apple wireless device does not have a valid IP address".
What these are telling you is that your MacBook Pro is connecting to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), but the AEBS is not "communicating" with the modem.
I suggest a complete power recycle of your network components to get things working again.
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AEBS, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Airport Extreme stuck on solid amber light - no response at all

I got my Airport Extreme this morning, set it up easily and was online for a few hours. I decided to set up my printer to the Airport, and when doing so - I unplugged the Airport Extreme and plugged it into a new outlet.
Now the base will only show a solid amber light, and Airport Utility says that it is unable to find any base stations.
I've tried unplugging the base, unplugging my modem, resetting the base, and nothing is working.
    Can anyone help, please?

Have you tried connecting your MacBook directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the AEBSn's LAN port, and then, tried using the AirPort Utility to access it?
If so, and have already done multiple "hard" resets on the AEBSn, something might have gone wrong when moving the unit, possibly a voltage surge. Have you tried plugging it back into the original outlet to see if that would resolve the problem. Otherwise, if practical, you might want to take it to your nearest Apple Store to have them take a look at it.

  • Airport Extreme reverts to solid amber

I have two airport extremes, both connected via ethernet to a router, which is connected to a cable modem.  All of the cables are new cat5e cables.  The airports both run the same wifi.  Normally this works great - both airports are up and running and we have great connectivity.
Once or twice a day, every day, I'll look at one of the airports and it is solid amber.  I don't know how long it's been that way - it happens when I'm not looking.  Pulling the power for a few seconds and plugging it back in solves the problem.
The issue I need help with is:  what could be happening that puts the airport into that state, such that it cannot recover on its own?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
Well, you may have discovered the answer for me also.
I have a Netgear Router in my Mix which looks like this:
FIOS CABLE>FIOS ROUTER (DHCP OFF)>Netgear ROUTER (DHCP ON)>Airport EX4thGEN MAIN conected to WAN.
These devices are hard wired through ethernet.
To them I add the REMOTE EX4thGEN extending wireless network created by MAIN EX4thGEN which has the internet through it's WAN port, and DHCP from the NetGear Router.
DId anyone say why you had to remove the Belkin Router? I'd love to know the "WHY" of this.
I just got FIOS about 3 weeks ago, and prior to that my setup performed very well.
Right now 90% of the office is CAT6E hardwired ethernet, and the Airports only serve 2 remote computers, one laptop and 1 music sharing iMac.
At the time of the FIOS upgrade, I decided to update the firmware in both the the Airports, and ever since it's been a struggle with the going amber issue.
If I remove the Router I am going to have to add an Ethernet switch, and then have the Airport be the DHCP Server - NAT Addressing device.
Thanks for your help, and so long for now, TOM

  • HT4600 i Get a solid amber light sometimes, bUT all works fine. I have to unplug the airport extreme to reset it and then it turns green and starys that way for a week or so and then turns back to amber. why is this and how do i fix it ?

I gat a solid amber light once a week on my airport extreme, but all works fine. I have to unplug it to reset it and then the light turns back to green and it is good for another week and then it happens again. why is this and what can i do to fix it ?

Solid amber on an AirPort Extreme is an indication that the internal power supply is starting to act up.
If the AirPort Extreme is in warranty, it shouid be exchanged for another AirPort Extreme.
If the AirPort Extreme is several years old, keep any eye on things. When/if you find that you are having to reset the device several times a week, it's time to start thinking about a replacement device, as the end is near.

  • Airport Extreme Shows SOLID Amber light only after Powerup

This is a relatively new Airport Extreme (802.11n), bought from the Apple store. This morning, all of a sudden I had no internet access. I finally determined that it wasn't the cable or the modem, but the base station.
I have tried powering it down (unplugging it from the back) and even leaving it powered down for up to five minutes. When I plug it back in, it shows green, blinks once and then shows solid Amber.
Solid Amber is supposed to mean that it's starting up. Airport Utility does not recognize the base station at all. I've tried a hard reset, but it seems to have no effect. No blinking light or anything.
    Am I screwed?

    Bummer.
Make sure you turn off the Airport card when you hook up to it with Ethernet.
There's a small reset button on the back that you should hold down with a paperclip or pen. Restart and see if that clears it.
If that doesn't work, it looks like you need to take it to the nearest Apple store

  • Lost Airport Express in my network. Solid amber light.

I've an Airport Extreme base station and use an Airport Express to extend the range throughout my house. Yesterday I had to restart Airport Extreme and reset it back to default mode, to make it burp out a 'stock' IP number. I renamed my network; but now my computers, using Airport Utility, can't 'see' the Airport Express. And its light is now solid amber. How do I get Airport Express back into my network to extend my range? Thank you. (BTW: I can't find the Airport utility disc that came with Airport Express.)

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you reset the Extreme back to factory defaults and reconfigured it, you will need to do the same for the Express.
Plug the Express into power and hold in the tiny reset button until the amber light begins to blink rapidly.
Open AirPort Utility to reconfigure your Express to "extend" the network created by the Extreme. If Airport Utility can't "find" the Express, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from the Express to your computer.
You may find it a bit easier to use the Manual Setup option on the Express since you already know how your Extreme is configured and you will use many of the same settings.

  • Airport Express 802.11n - Solid amber light after initial setup

    Hi,
I got my refurbished Airport (from the official Mac Store) earlier this week.
It actually looked brand new, from the packaging to the flawless device itself.
I plugged it in and set it to act as a bridge, and after it had rebooted, Airport Utility could no longer find it.
As the title states, the light is solid amber. When it boots, the green light comes up for a split second before it turns amber.
I have tried countless times to do the factory default reset to no avail. The light blinks when i hold in the reset button, but other than that it seems completely dead.
I live in a share, without amin access to the router.

    Welcome to the discussions!
It sounds like you have tried to reset the device by holding in the reset button while it is plugged in until the amber light blinks quickly, correct?
    Try this instead:
    Power down the Express
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in while you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds
This full hard reset will return the device to factory defaults so you can reconfigure it. If you still have issues after trying this a few time, you have a defective Express that should be exchanged.

  • Airport Express - status repeatedly cycling from solid amber to solid green

Hello, my Airport is cycling solid green to solid amber approximately every 5 minutes or so. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
After the Express restarts, it should blink amber slowly. If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times and the Express will not blink amber slowly after it restarts, you have a defective AirPort Express that will need to be replaced.

  • My airport express is stuck with a solid amber light.

I have reset via hard reset instructions and also factory default by holding in the reset button while plugging in the device. My internet connection works fine when I hard wire connect it to my mac but airport utility will not recognize the airport express

My AirPort Express is stuck with a solid amber light.
If that is the case, and several tries at a Factory Default Reset have not been able to free up the lockup, then it is unfortunately likely that the AirPort Express has experienced an internal electronic component failure and will need to be replaced.
