Help: Airport Remote Speakers No Longer Showing in iTunes

Hello!
After 2 years of streaming music to my remote speakers via iTunes and Airport Express (AX), I've had my first real issue. I have not been able to figure this out, and am at my last strand of sanity.
My AX is connected to a pair of speakers in my living room. The AX is on my home network via ethernet cable. I have a Windows XP desktop running the latest version of iTunes in my bedroom. This desktop is on the home network via ethernet. Last night, for some unknown reason, I no longer had the ability to see my remote speakers in iTunes. I tried everything. I turned off the firewalls, reset the routers, made sure that "share via ethernet" was selected in the AX admin utility, but my efforts were futile.
Ive not messed with any "network" settings. I usually leave things as is, yet I've never previously had this "disappearing remote speaker" issue before.
Things to note:
I do not run any sort of windows firewall.
My Macbook seems to stream music just fine wirelessly to the AX when I turn iTunes (latest version) on.
Any advice / help would be very very very much appreciated.
The only request I have is, I am not as computer savvy as most of you are. If you do have a solution, please break it down so that someone as slow as I am is able to make sense of it and implement it
Thank you so very much.

Hello GeekDoc. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The fact that your MacBook is successfully streaming iTunes to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is telling me that the issue is most likely not iTunes or the AX itself, but with the Ethernet path between your desktop PC and the AX.
As you may already know, iTunes uses AirTunes to stream audio to an AX. Although AirTunes sounds like it can only travel wirelessly, it actually can be transmitted by wire as well. AirTunes is based on Apple's Remote Audio Output Protocol (RAOP). What you may not know is AirTunes takes a minimum of two steps to do the audio streaming: 1) Establish a link with an AX, and 2) Send the audio data.
In order to do both, AirTunes will open ports: 5000 to establish the link, and (typically) 6000 to pass the audio data. I know you said that you are not running any firewalls, but you may want to double-check that none are running between the Ethernet path between the desktop and the AX. I suggest that you (temporarily) disable any firewalls, spyware, or antivirus programs on your desktop ... or any other program that prevents network traffic to see if this eliminates the problem.

  • Remote speakers no longer show up in iTunes

I have recently had to send my DVD/surround-sound into the shop for repair. It used to play iTunes through Airport Express fine, but now I've tried hooking Airport up to both my TV and another stereo, but in both cases remote speakers no longer show up in iTunes. I've tried reconfiguring Airport Express, and have got 'look for remote speakers' checked in iTunes prefs, bit to no avail...can anyone help me?
Also, on a related note, last time I had probas, I chatted with a support guy online somewhere on Apple.com but I can't seem to find this anymore...anyone know where it's gone?

I had the same problem. I was using iTunes 7.0.2 with two Airport Express devices and it worked fine when the Bonjour service was running at the same time.
After I upgraded to iTunes 7.1 I was unable to connect to my Airport Express devices unless I disabled\stopped the Bonjour service. :-/
While disabling the Bonjour service is a workaround for iTunes, it breaks other 3rd party apps that use the Bonjour service to stream to the Airport Express devices. I have a WinAmp plugin that allows me to stream WinAmp to my Airport devices that doesn't work when the Bonjour service is turned off.
I hope Apple fixes this problem ASAP. I hope Apple didn't do this to intentionally to defeat 3rd party apps that figured out how to stream to an Airport Express.

  • Remote Speakers No Longer Visible with iTunes 6.0.3

I haven't tried to connect my Airport Express stations since moving to a new location last September. All was working fine then (Windows XP, Belkin Pre-N Wireless Router, pre-iTunes 6.0, older AX firmware). I decided to connect my AXs today after updating to iTunes 6.0.3. No luck - installed 4.2 version of Airport Express Software, 6.3 version of AX firmware on both units, hard resets, factory resets, reconnect with network cabling first (this used to work when I had problems in the past, but not now), uninstall and reinstall of all software, and every other idea I could find on these forums. Neither the Admin Utility or the Setup Assistant will detect the AXs(though I can choose Other to manually connect to them with the Admin Utility). I have no WEP enabled, Windows Firewall is turned off, I've disabled my anti-virus and anti-spyware software, but nothing I have tried has worked.
Does anyone here have any ideas that I might not have tried? Are others having this problem? Is it an iTunes 6.x issue or an AX firmware issue? Is there a place one can go to downgrade their iTunes or AX software?
This is pretty frustrating since I was a very early adopter of this technology when it first came out and I had to put up with sketchy reliability for the first 4 months of ownership, but after that, it had worked like a charm until now...
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

my suggestion and one that i have heard works is that if you no longer use a pda, then go through your calender history and archive or delete the items that may have been entered by a pda...
i have heard that deleting all records entered by a pda works, myself tho, my ipaq is my pda not my ipod... so i would rather let my ipaq manage my calender and contacts rather than my music/video player...
or you can get a third party app, here is a freeware one that works if you can figure out german on the installer, i had a friend talk me though it... i gave them a beer for their efforts
    http://www.saminegm.de/SamCalPod.htm
    it works quite well...
there are other small apps which work too... but you gotta pay for them

  • Airtunes remote speakers no longer work and a weird error

    Hi,
The other day after upgrading to iTunes 7.6 the ability for me to select my remote speakers in iTunes stopped functioning. The option has always worked for me before this, and yes, I have the "look for remote speakers" option checked in the iTunes preferences. Now, the little drop down to select speakers has vanished on my desktop.
The option still works with my laptop using iTunes 7.4. What gives?
Also, when I check or uncheck the box to tell iTunes to look for remote speakers on my desktop (iTunes 7.6) I get the following error:
"An error occurred while updating the default player for audio file types. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation."
I have seen other posts for both of these issues, but NO solutions. Uninstalling iTunes did not work. Rolling back to 7.5 did not work (and now 7.5 won't read my .itl file so my library is lost at the moment).
Anyone have any ideas? I can find many people asking the same questions, but no answers anywhere in my searches here and in Google.
    Thanks.

The fix for these problems was twofold.
First, uninstall iTunes, Quicktime, and Apple updater. Delete all folders in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data and C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application Data related to apple or itunes. Search through the registry for all keys and values related to iTunes.
Reinstall iTunes. That got rid of the error messages I was having.
To get the speakers to work again, I took my PC out of the DMZ on my router. Seems that if it's not behind the firewall/NAT, it won't pass the AirTunes traffic.

  • I installed 10, iTunes no longer connects to airport Remote Speakers

Boy, this is real irritating. I just use iTunes to stream internet radio to my stereo. It was all working fine, then I updated to v10 and nothing works anymore.
BIG PROBLEM...the option to choose computer speakers or remote speakers DISAPPEARED. Well, it was there for a second after I ran iTunes 10 for the first time, then the option DISAPPEARED.
Heck, I even unistalled everything and went back to v9.2.1....But the same problem...ITS GONE!
Now even I can't get iTunes to even connect to my Airport Express at all to even play music on the computer speakers.
Grrrrrr. I was all bloody working till v10 came along!!!
BTW, I'm using Comodo firewall. It was all working before, like I said.

Well I uninstalled Comodo and turned on Windows firewall. I re-installed iTunes.
I went into firewall settings and iTunes was checked off (allowed) for both home & public networks. Didn't work. I saw Bonjour on there and just 'home' was checked off, so I checked off 'public' to see if it mattered.
It did work. iTunes connected to the remote speakers....but for some reason, only for a very short period, then I get a network error.
This is freaking unbelievable. It was all working fine till I stupidly updtated to 10. Grrrrrrrrr

The situation is as following. All servers are Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise.
We have clustered 2 virtual servers FP001 and FP002, for now FP001 is running all services:
Connection Broker, MSDTC, Fileserver, Printserver, SQL Server.
For the Remote Apps: Apps were made on TS001 and TS002, both these servers are added to a tsfarm on the Connection Broker. A virtual IP was made on the firewall linked to a failover between the two Terminal Servers. This IP was linked to DNS name: tsfarm.contoso.local.
I have checked WMI en COM+ security settings but they all seem fine, nothing changed. I have restarted both Terminal Servers but no effect. Restarting FP001 and FP002 had no effect either.
    Any assistance is welcome!

I finally got it to work by going to the WebAccess website, then configuration and changing the source from Connection Broker cb001.contoso.local to Remote App Source tsfarm.contoso.local.
However this is not how it should be done I suppose.. Any idea why linking the farm works but linking the connection broker were the farm has been set as source does not?

  • Apps no longer show in iTunes 12

When I'm in iTunes 12 and click on apps they no longer show up. Where did they go? They show on the iPhones pages 1,2, and 3 but not in the sidebar.

You have to get to the display above from the upper left corner of iTunes, by clicking the iPhone icon here:
You cannot get there by simply clicking the iPhone icon in the sidebar of some other display (e.g., music).

  • IPad suddenly no longer shows in iTunes

Up until about a week or two, any time I would open iTunes (Windows 7 PC) my iPad would show up on the left as a wireless device.  Now it no longer shows unless I directly plug it in, and my iPad is definitely connected to the WiFi.  I did just update to the most recent iTunes and that didn't change anything.
I did also try restarting both the computer and the iPad.
EDIT:  Looks like it works now.  It just takes about a minute for it to show up.  It used to be almost instant.  I was going to remove this post but I don't see an option to do so.

Cheers. Leroy. At the very same moment that you posted this... I discovered the answer: jamming the cable into the iPad a tad harder than normal. Months of air travel and general knocking around of the device has obviously made the connection a bit tetchy. I'm very shame-faced for such a schoolgirl error!
So, again, thanks for your support. Much appreciated.

  • Ipod nano 3rd Gen no longer shows in iTunes devices, any ideas?

This ipod operates fine but when I connected it to iTunes (latest version) on my iMac it doesn't register as a device so I can't sync etc. Connecting an iPad DOES show up in iTunes devices.
The above problem appeared in Ox Snow Leopard and in just installed Mountain Lion.
Any help would be much appreciated

The latest version of iTunes may hide the sidebar.  To show the sidebar, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
With the sidebar visible, does your iPod appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES?

  • IPhoto folders no longer showing in iTunes & System Pref???

has anyone had this problem recently?
when i'm syncing iPod it no longer shows individual folders that you could select from. it seems to me that it wants to wipe out the folders that are existing on my iPod to replace it with entire iPhoto library without separate folders.
also, in system preferences it no longer shows folders from iPhoto. ?
i don't understand. could it have anything to do with iWeb? that is about the only thing i've "played" around with recently...

okay, so i just restarted my computer & the desktop changed.
i usually only sleep the computer & so the desktop doesn't change. even when i did shutdown/restart computer in the past, the desktop did not change. i think somehow this is all connected. it seems if i don't have whatever photo my desktop is saved on the desktop, it will change it back into some generic photo...should i just make an appointment at an apple store? i don't have iPhoto 08 & there have been no updates...

  • Itunes store link no longer showing in itunes v8

After upgrading to Itunes V8 I can no longer get to the Itunes store. The link is no longer in the Itunes left navigation pane.
Libary (with Music, Movies, TV shows as a sub menu - no Podcast?) and Playlists are there. Has anybody else had this problem and does anybody know how to fix it?

i found the answer - in Edit, Preferences the parental controls were set to disable access to the itunes store

  • Help! Slow download on TV show from itunes

I bought a TV show from itunes, and it's downloading REALLY slowly. This is my first time using itunes, and right now, it's looking like my last. It says there is 270 hours remaining...that's ridiculous. I'm on a fast connection, I'm at college. My roommate says hers take 90 minutes, tops. Who can I get in contact with to fix this or get a refund? Is that even possible with Apple? I know how sh*tty the support from these companies can be. What should I do?

If you mean, can you download to Tunes on a computer, can you stream it to the Apple TV, then Yes.

  • Win XP : problems for itune to connect the airport remote speakers

    Hi there,
My config is iTunes installed on my PC, a Tecom wifi router and two airport express base stations connected to speakers in different rooms of my flat.
At first, iTunes has no problem for seeing the airport stations and the music goes well through the wifi.
After two or three days, the PC doesn't see the stations anymore in iTunes (they actually still show, but in gray) .
If I want them to be seen again, I need to close iTunes, go to "connexions", disconnect my PC from the network, connect again, run iTunes again, and then... it works !
That's a bit boring. As strange as it could be, the act of shuting down my PC every night and running it "fresh" every morning doesn't help.
Has any one any suggestion on how it could work better ?

Hello Deb Parks. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I'm not sure if, by product key, you mean the encryption password for your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) wireless network. Is your AEBSn's wireless network currently running encryption (WEP or WPA)? If so, temporarily disable it, and then, see if the PC can connect.

  • BTMM: Remote Mac No Longer Shows Up

For year's I've used Back to My Mac (BTMM) and Screen Sharing to help my mother with her iMac.  It worked dependably until a few months ago, I think around May.  Now, her machine no longer appears in the "Shared" category that appears on the left side of a Finder window.
I've done quite a bit of troubleshooting (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4907) but still haven't solved the problem.
The Apple Support article OS X: Using and troubleshooting Back to My Mac with your iCloud account mentions..
Ensure TCP port 5354 and UDP ports 4500 and 5353 are open on your firewall.
...but I'm not sure how to "ensure," let alone check to see if these ports are open. Any advice on checking/managing ports?
From my Mac, I tried using the "Port Scan" function of Network Utility.  I entered her IP address and scanned specific port ranges.  I verified a few "common" ports by scanning the range 20 to 25 (21 & 22 are open, as expected) but when I scanned for the ports listed above, they did not seem to be open, i.e., the output was...
    Port Scan has started…
    Port Scanning host: [my.moms.ip.address]
    Port Scan has completed…
    Here's some background info...
My mom and I are both using OS X 10.8.
My mom's iMac is connented to a cable modem via ethernet (no wireless router).
My mom's Internet provider is Charter.
My MacBook Pro is connected to a cable modem via WiFi (TimeCapsule).
Neither of us are using a Firewall.
Both of us have Screen Sharing and File Sharing on.
BTMM works fine between my other Macs.
My other Macs don't show up as "Shared" items on my Mom's iMac.
I've serached in Keychain Access for old .Mac and MobileMe keychain items to delete but found none.
I tried the command "netstat en1" from Terminal but I don't understand the response.
I've tried running ShareTool 2 in demo mode: Screen Sharing works perfectly but I'd like to get iCloud's BTMM to work the way it's intended to for free.
    Any suggestions?

OK, I fixed it. I simply inserted the Mac OSX install DVD while in the windows side and clicked "repair" bootcamp.
Mac Hard Drive is back and browseable.
