Help! all files went missing!

so. i was using my mac mini, its a G4. everything was fine. then i went to iTunes to play some music and when i clicked on a song it said that it couldn't find it or something. then when i said to browse for the folder, i couldnt find my music, movies, or other media folders.
then i exited iTunes (at this point my settings were still normal), and opened the finding. When i tried to click on movies, music, or anything, the message "the volume 'movies' cannot be found."
frustrated i then went back to 'Macintosh HD' to find that my available harddrive space was 65GB, when it was 30GB before. I lost a LOT of movies and music, or so it seems.
i then restarted, and once i logged back into my account, everything was as it was the first time i logged in; the standard icons in the dock, the big dock, and the desktop background was the standard blue one when before it was the stones.
i checked my folders and got the same message. but it was peculiar because all my settings were different, but my account user icon was the same. anyways, when i started all my programs they were as if they had never been used before. Also, when i went under Applications, all my old applications that i had downloaded were there but none of them were on the dock, or set up; they too were like they had never been used before.
I ran disk utility and when i picked repair disk nothing happened. when i pick to repair the other thing, (i dont remember what it was) it repaired some things, but when i restarted my computer, nothing different.
Because i cant access the movies or music part of my hard drive, something tells me the hard drive just isn't finding them and that all my files are still there (this is just hope probably).
Anyways, I want to know what i can do!
And i didnt backup anything. yes is was irresponsible, but please dont chew me out about it or anything.

Hello Andy,
Yes, we definitely need more information to diagnose the problem fully.
But, since the primary mission is to locate and retrieve those files, the amount of tinkering needs to be kept to a minimum as well.
Ideally, the computer would remain "off" until a data recovery tool were available to use. Then, it may be possible to boot from the recovery tool's CD and locate and retrieve the missing files.
The problem is that OS X is continually creating and adding to it's swap file. And, browsing the Internet creates cache files and cookies. And, in general, the more the computer is used, the more likely it becomes that those files are being over-written (if they have been deleted).
So, that is why I approached it from a more aggressive "recover first" approach.
If the space had not been freed, then it would be less concerning. But, as it is, the more the computer is used (even in trouble-shooting), the less they are likely to be able to recover if the files have been deleted.
In a file recovery mission, the first step is to avoid writing anything to the disk, and immediately employ the recovery tool. Since OS X is constantly writing to the disk (it's swap file), the risk of losing files permanently increases by the minute.
Since it sounds very important that the files be found, I would approach it from that angle first.
If they are deleted (and still recoverable), then the recovery program will find them and restore them. If nothing is left to recover, or after they have been recovered, then you would proceed with finding-out why.
And, if the files have not truly been deleted, then obviously trying to recover them would not harm anything.
It's a gamble to try and trouble-shoot before recovery since that could lead to losing files permanently (due to over-writing).
It would be less of a risk to try to recover first. You see, if nothing has actually been deleted, then naturally the program will not show them to be recoverable (because they will not be found in the "free" space).
In that case, you would then proceed to trying to see where they are, and trouble-shoot the system.
Given the priority expressed, I believed their primary concern to be getting the files back.
Naturally, you may disagree with the method. But, I think they should consider the ideas expressed above and weigh them in the decision of how to proceed.
Naturally, we need more information to understand what happened. But, understanding what happened may be less important than recovering the lost files.
I know if it were me, I'd want to recover the deleted files first, and then figure-out why it happened. Especially if tinkering meant sacrificing the ability to recover some of those files. For that reason, I naturally put recovery first.
Understand, I'm not arguing with you. I am just explaining why the recovery tool may be a higher priority to this user. Ultimately, it is up to them to decide which route they want to go first.
I hope this helps.

  • All Files option missing

Does anyone know if the option to show "All Files" in the Import dialog box will be returning? Or, is the "All Files" option now only available in the Media Browser?

I am a teacher in a high school and recently had a textbook published on Premiere Pro CS5. The option was available in previous versions and apparently in some of the BETA. That is the way I wrote some instructions in the text and now it is not available.
I would like the students to be able to open a txt file and copy and paste some text into a Title. When teaching students it is much easier to keep them inside one application rather than switching between applications when they are first learning a program.
Also, it is still available via the Media Browser. Why would you be able to do it one way and not the other when both options were available before?
Would my reason change the answer to my question? If you don't have anything useful to answer to a thread why are you commenting?

  • Need Help All Files in ACR look VERY Bad

The best way I can explain it is my RAW file's look like a GIF file. Mostly in the darker tones/shodows of the files. I have run some "process of elimination" tests to try to isolate where the challange is coming from.
    1. Raw Files are stll good, I have run them on another computer and the image is great.
    2. Moniter and Graphics Card are Fine, I open the RAW file in Picasa 3.0 and images look fin on my P.C
I am currently Ruining Vista 64
    I am using
    Photoshop 11.0.1
    Bridge 3.0.0.464
    Lightroom 2.5
    ACR 5.5
Any one out there ever run into this challange?
    Please Help.

I can't get mine to look bad like yours.  With default settings, except Recovery = 100 and Contrast = 100, I still don't see the posterization nor the greens you're seeing, although the colors are a bit strong due to the contrast setting.  If you've changed more things than Recovery and maybe Contrast, perhaps post those settings.
Does it look ok in ACR and then just bad in Photoshop or is it bad in ACR the same way?
I wonder if you have a bad monitor profile that only Photoshop is fully utilizing and having issues with?  If you're on a calibrated system, you might temporarily setting your monitor profile to sRGB (or maybe AdobeRGB if on a Mac) and see if the Photoshop image changes.
I have attached a yours/mine screen capture showing what I see when I max out Recovery and Contrast in an attempt to duplicate what yours looks like.  I have used LR to better document the conversion settings, but I also tried it in ACR 5.5 and Photoshop and don't really see much difference if any...where both should be using the ACR 5.5 engine.

  • HELP, a file went lost

    Hi
I am working with a statistical software (SPSS). Today, after finishing my work I couldn't shut down my computer because the SPSS software didn't agree to get closed..I "forced quit" and when opening my computer again- the last file I worked on-dissapeared from my computer!!
Unfortunately, I have no backup for this very important file (for me..)
My "time machine" aplication doesn't work (I don't really know how to configure it).
Is there anything I can do to recover this file???
    Thanks
    Uri

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Firefox 8.0 - All bookmarks are missing - "unable to process the backup file" - tried reinstalling Firefox and restarting computer. Nothing helps. What can I do next?

All bookmarks went missing after running WinCleaner OneClick version 11.4.2, but that has never happened before. Cannot create new bookmarks and if I try to restore the bookmarks from a backup , the pop-up window says "Unable to Process the Backup File". I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox and I tried restarting the computer - neither helped. I'm running Windows XP Professional 2002 service pack 3. Any suggestions?

Found a corrupt places file, deleted all the rest and renamed the corrupt file to be the only places file but I still had no bookmarks or bookmark functionality. I resigned myself to a complete uninstall of Firefox, including all personalization, etc. then reinstalled Firefox and I am now rebuilding my bookmarks list. Thank you much for the quick reply and trying to help! If I use WinCleaner OneClick again I'll be sure to back up my bookmarks.

  • Please help!  v. 6.0 all files missing (haven't moved any, though)

    Hello everyone,
I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 and all of my files are "missing".  Each one has that little yellow ? in the left corner.
    Before you ask....
    1. I have NOT deleted any picutures/vidoes
    2. I have NOT moved any pictures/videos
    3. I have NOT upgraded the computer operating system
    4. In short, we have done NOTHING to these photos
I am baffled beyond belief.  As you can imagine, we have tons of phones dating back to 2003 of our daughter...and terrified all has been lost.  Please tell me there is a solution.  All the thumbnails are showing...but again, each one has that yellow "?" in the left corner.  I am so frustrated that I never want to use this program again.  And the fact that its older shouldn't matter.  Feel like just dumping all future things in the Windows Picture folder and forget it.  At least I wouldn't have to worry about "reconnecting" anything again.
    Hoping someone here can help.
    Signed,
    Desperately seeking a solution

If you are on Windows, a possible cause of this is that if your photos are on an external drive, and that drive has changed letters. If so, change the drive letter back.
But please tell us, what hard drive are the photos located on. Please tell us your operating system. And definitely follow Andromeda14's suggestion to see if the actual location of the photos matches the location that PSE thinks they are stored at.

  • Render files keep missing - help!

I'm trying to export (using compressor), and every time I try, I get an error in FCP that "some files went offline - render files".
I've tried everything I could thing of. I've rendered, I've re-rendered, I've deleted all render files and started over - nothing.
The render folders are names right and in the right place. I even took the tower to an Apple store for tech support, and they agreed everything looked good, as far as folder names/placement. They didn't know what was going on either.
So when I try to reconnect the media after the error message pops up, I get another message that says "there are no clips selected that have files associated with them". I've even used the render manager, deleted the clips, and re-rendered.
Nothing seems to work. What makes it more puzzling is that the audio render folder keeps popping up in the trash. I've moved it to the right place, and poof - it appears in the trash bin again. And some other render files seem to be going there instead of the render folder.
So how do I remedy this? I tried deleted all the render folders, and that didn't help. I'm going to try it again in a few minutes, just in case.
When I go into File/Reconnect media, I get a bunch of render files missing, along with a bunch of my media files listed under 'online'.
If I reconnect the online files, I have to render, and the whole thing starts over again. There is no red render bar in the timeline. The video plays audio and video just fine - just can't export. Any ideas?

My suspicion is that it may have something to do with your scratch disk filepath. What is your scratch disk filepath - drive name, everything...

  • Latest Adobe Reader update deleted all files from my desktop - help please!

    Dear all!
Yesterday I opened up a .pdf document with Adobe Reader. I clicked the Help | Check for Updates option. The reader informed me that there was an update available. I then disabled my antivirus (as is recommended). I selected the available update by checking the box next to it. I then clicked the Download option.
The update began to download. At that moment I noticed that the .pdf document was still open (i.e. Adobe Reader was still running). Knowing that the installation, when it begins, tends to notify me that it must close Adobe Reader in order for the installation to continue, I decided to close Adobe Reader myself before being prompted to do so. All was fine until that moment, as the update download and install runs in a completely separate process from the Reader, it was not affected.
After I closed the Reader, with the update still running I noticed that all files I had on my desktop were gone. None of the folders were missing, just the single files and most of my shortcuts. I checked to see if the files were just invisible or phisically missing. It was the latter. Windows Explorer showed that all files I had on my desktop were gone (deleted/overwritten I guess). A search of my computer for the file names came up empty, even though I was searching with the "search hidden and system files" options enabled!
I tried a number of deleted file restoration softwares but none have identified the desktop files I was missing.
Be so kind as to spare me from the "did you check the power cord" category of "answers", as I am not a complete idiot. The Acrobat Update, or something associated with it has to be at the root of this problem, as the antivirus software I have installed came up empty when I searched the computer for virurses, worms and the likes...
All help on this matter would be appreciated. Needless to say, most of my current work was stored on the desktop...
I am running WindowsXP sp. 3, Acrobat Reader 9.34
    With regards
    jack_84

Please ignore the previous unrelated reply - I will deal with it separately.
I must first say that this is a very puzzling problem, and that I have never heard of anything like it.  Apart from the missing desktop content, it also puzzles me that you state your Adobe Reader version as 9.34, when the latest Reader version is actually 9.3.2.
Anyway, how to solve it?  Can I assume that you do not have a very recent backup, from where you can simply restore all the lost content?
I do not know if your desktop content is really gone (deleted), or if it is somehow just not visible.  There are a few things we can try, but I strongly suggest that you make a full backup of your system before you try anything!
Since I have never seen this before, I cannot make any definitive recommendations, but just suggest what I would do if that happened on my computer.  Again, not before making a full backup.
    Uninstall Adobe Reader.
System Restore to a time before the problem started.
Check the following registry keys, if they have a value 'NoDesktop', and what it is set to
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
If you are on XP Pro, you can use gpedit.msc to check these settings (Configuration | Administrative Templates | Desktop ["Hide and disable all items on the desktop"]).

    Missing "7-Zip File"
    Hello,
I haven't been able to update Firefox since 10.01 or 10.02 because every time I try I get the same message the "7-ZIP File" is missing. Then the update fails. I've submitted this problem to Mozilla Firefox and, got an immediate reply of " they are researching your problem".
Well, you can tell how long that has been. Is there anything I can do, or any where I can go to get the file I need?
Any constructive help would be very much appreciated! I'm not sure If I'll ever be able to find where this is located. But I do appreciate help just the same.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files by Firefox.<br />
Disable your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes installing work.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 11.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data because all profile folders will be removed.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Please let me know what I can do to get my Numbers (iWork 09) working properly again.
Here is what is going on:
Numbers in iWork 09 not working can't access Blank, Checklist and many other files within Numbers.   I can open the program but only a few files are available. When I click on the file (which also has no icon just the name of the file) this warning appears:
The document "Blank.nmbtemplate" is invalid.  The index.xml file is missing.
I recently had to get a new hard drive installed and had the system upgraded and more memory put in by a Mac certified specialist recommended to me from the Apple store in Northbrook because this was the 3rd time my drive went bad but this time it was to old (I got the IMAC- in 2007) and the Apple store could no longer work on it this time so they recommended a few places that had certified Mac specialists.  Since then Numbers is not working right.
I'm sure it's something simple to fix, but I've tried re installing it and that didn't work.  Appreciate any help.
    Thanks
    AppMare

There is one way its getting fixed. Once I update my Adobe Illustrator CC to Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 it is further allowing me to go into the system folder and allocate the font to the file so that it can replace it. My only concern now is that our MAC partners who will receive these files back from us have Adobe CS6. We will down save it to CS6 but I hope they won't experience any font issues because of us using CC 2014? Any light you can shed on this?

  • "iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing."  Help!!

"iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing." Help!!
Hello everyone, I have looked throughout this forum but couldn’t find anything similar so I am posting this in the hope of someone helping me out.
I have encountered some problems with iTunes (most recent edition) after doing a Dell update which seems to have knocked something out with iTunes.
Whenever I hit the iTunes icon it refuses to run and iTunes displays the following message:-
"iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes."
I don’t want to reinstall itunes from fresh as this will mean losing all the records and playlists that I have spent the last 3 years using.
I first want to try by getting my old one back by any means neccessary.
Like I said this problem first happened after a standard Dell update.
I do have the option of doing a restore with the Dell or using Windows Vista restore itself but I fear I do not have enough disk space.
On the Dell update I can restore to settings of a previous date which might bring iTunes back but when attempt to do
that I keep getting the following message,
"Not enough free disk space to back up"
Around this time I am given a lists of what will be backed up and this readsas follows:-
    Pics 2.87gb
    Music 71.72gb
    Videos 330.57mb
    Documents 219.11mb
    Email etc 203.64mb
How do I free up disk space to do the back up? An external hard drive?? If I baIs there anyway of getting a previous version of iTunes back?
My drive information is as follows:-
    C Drive: Very little room - red warning - 5.67gb of 138gb
    D Drive: 6.34gb of 9.99 free
Do I have too much music?
Ideally don't want to reinstall itunes as is a ball ache, and it has all the playlists etc so if there is
a way of restoring and getting back iTunes either via restoring system to the prior date when iTunes was ok.
C drive is really full now. How can I clean this up and make more room? Do I need to add memory? Are all the songs
causing the problem? What advise can you give me? Please help.
    Thanks!

    Nodders:
I've recently had exactly the same message as you, after iTunes updated to 10.1.1.4. First of all, I checked the *My Music* folder to make sure it was still there - it was. (I do have a back up of that folder anyway!)
I then chose the re-install iTunes option and a pop-up box asked if I wanted to uninstall iTunes or repair it. I (obviously) chose repair and I'm pretty sure what happened was that the install process simply re-installed a damaged (or missing) file. It far too quick to be a fresh install. My library was intact.
So my advice(for what it's worth) is take the re-install option and then repair option. I can't guarantee anything, but ...
By the way, after I experienced a recent hard drive failure, I decided to invest in a 1TB external drive to back up my iTunes library and personal files because it's a much easier way of backing up than my previous method. Luckily, I only lost a small recent part of my library, but it taught me a lesson. Back up regurlarly, using a larger hard drive than you are using on your computer (which allows you to keep the most recent and +next most recent+ back-ups, and don't rely on Windows to do the backing up. Find a suitable backup piece of software. (My hard drive came with s/w built in.)
