Help! All-in-One shuts down :

Hello, I have an old psc 1215 all-in-one printer. It made it's job for a long period of time with success, now I only need it for random prints once in a while so I don't want to buy a new one. The problem is that the printer shuts down when sending the printing command from the computer to the printer. I have tried with two different color ink cartriges: the 57 one and the 28 one. Tried running the HP Diagnostic Utility with no success, it is reporting that everything is fine. My warranty has expired, don't know what to do now. If anyone could help me I would much appreciate it, also, have you ever experienced something similar to this? I tried searching this problem on Google but with no success, it seems no one has ever had this kind of problem.
Thanks in advance and I hope we could figure this out!
P.S. I am using Windows XP SP3 with all the necessary drivers installed correctly.

Also, I suggest you update your software.

    Hi there 57nomad,
To make sure this is not software related try downloading and running the print and scan doctor located here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03275041&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
It can fix a lot on its own and if not give a better idea of what is going on.
    Best of Luck!

  • My HP Pavilion All-in-One shuts down during certain computer games. Any ideas why?

My HP Pavilion All-in-One is a year old, and has started shutting down on certain PC games and on one online game, Wizards 101. Can anyone tell me why or what I can do to prevent this? The games were not from original disks, don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. We have uninstalled them, but may buy originals if this would make any difference. Thanks

    Linda, welcome to the forum.
It sounds like a heat problem to me.  Most laptops and All-in-ones are frankly not meant for gaming.  Also, you could try installing any patches that are available for the games.  This could be part of the problem if not the heat.
Please let us know if this solves your problem or not.

  • Previous version had save all tabs before shutting down, which helped a lot if u open same windows always, but this is not there in the latest version I have upgraded recently.Request you to guide me if this can be accommodated in the new version.

Previous version had save all tabs before shutting down, which helped a lot if u open same windows always, but this is not there in the latest version I have upgraded recently.Request you to guide me if this can be accommodated in the new version.

Firefox now always stores the old session which you can access by going to the History menu and selecting "Restore Previous Session".
If you always open the last set of tabs, an alternative approach is this:
    # Click the orange Firefox button, then select options to open the options window
    # Go to the General panel
    # Change the setting "When Firefox starts" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

  • Help! My computer shuts down semi-unexpectedly.

Please somebody help! My computer shuts down semi-unexpectedly. I say 'semi' unexpectedly, cos, by now it seems an accident waiting to happen ONLY when I play a 3D game.
Now, whenever I play a 3D game there's a good chance the computer just shuts itself down, without ANY warning. Can be within 5 minutes, can be after an hour, it sometimes doesn't happen at all.
After this the computer will not start up at all, and the D-bracket tells me the processor is the culprit. At first I waited a while (+/- one hour) and the thing would start up again as if nothing happened.
After it started happening more frequently (or maybe I should say, 'after it didn't go away by itsself') I just didn't wait, but tried to find out what went wrong, and how to fix it.
All I have learned so far is that if -after a 'radical shutdown'- I release the levers on my processor's heatsink, and wiggle it a bit, then refasten them the computer will start up again, no problem. But ONLY if I disconnect the powercable from my machine ENTIRELY first.
I'm don't have the technical knowledge myself to make anything out of this, and am at my wit's end by now.
    My specs:
    mobo: 865PE-NEO2
    mem: 512MB Pc3200 dual channel
    processor: PIV 2.4GhZ
    video: Radeon9700PRO
    PSU: 400W
    Also:
    - All BIOS frequencies are at default
    - Got six ventilators in a case that is always open.
    - Got Corecenter running in the background with very tight temperature alert settings.
    - I have no other problems with my computer, and I do not overclock.
All this at least leads me to believe it's not a power-, frequency- or heat issue. But then again, I'm no expert. At all.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Juju

    Is ur CPU OCed ?????
And whats ur VDimm, cuz i had the same Problem when running Gothic II with all details aon 1600x1200 2xAniso & 4xFSAA.
I believe the Problem is that ur RAM shuts down under full load if ur VDimm is too low, because all MSI Boards dynamically OC a littel (3-4 Mhz FSB) when running under full load (I read that on http://www.tomshardware.com).
On my system with standard Vdimm @2.5 V and FSB Oced to 250 my system would crash almost everytime when I played Gothic II. Then i found out that the board booted at 407 Mhz DDR Clock. That's when i started suspecting that my Rams couldn't handle 407 Mhz when running at an extremely low 2.5 VDimm.
    So try the following:
-Increase VDimm from 2.5 up to 2.7 V in small steps and check ur system stability every time stop when everything seems fine.
-If u'r Oced don't go for FSB 250 (and multiplier at 5:4) try sth. like 243 so even if dynamically oced ur Rams won't go too far above 400 Mhz.
P.S.: My VDimm is now at 2.6 and FSB at 244 and everything is fine.

How do I close down all apps before shutting down iPad?

Click the Home button once to display your Home Screens. Double click the Home button. That should display your open apps at the bottom of the screen. Press one of those icons until they wiggle and a red dot with an "x" appears appears on each icon. Press the red dot to close down each app. Press the Home button when all apps are closed. You may need to press the Home button again to get back to the normal Home Screen display.

  • Help, MacBook won't shut down properly!!

Hi, just hoping someone can help with the following as my MacBook is not a happy bunny. I recently reformatted my hdd and restored my system using Time machine. This was to allow me to create a new partition so I could run bootcamp. All was fine for a few weeks, buy I have noticed recently that system preferences has become unreliable and fails to load on most occasions, freezing in the process - it shows in the dock, but does not load. I have OSX snow leopard all updates, two user accounts, guest activated. I have repaired disk permissions a number of times - sometimes works for a very limited time, other times not. I have deleted the finder and systempreferences .plist files in both user accounts, emptied trash and restarted, again limited effectiveness. When the sys prefs crashes, i force quit it, then it tends to load fine next time, but 2 mins later its up to its old tricks. On top of this, the Mac is now refusing to shut down - it will get to the spinning wheel phase then nothing, I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.
I've also tried disabling the guest account, but no luck.
Any ideas gratefully received as I'm worried that jts all going crash soon !
    Many thanks
    Rich.

    Many thanks MJ,
I deleted everything you mentioned and sysprefs worked for a while but as soon as I tried opening an application e.g. mail, the first reboot of sysprefs worked fine, but subsequent ones hang. Funny thing is now the power down problem has gone away - it seems to work very quickly - I guess a function of clearing out the caches folder?
Anyway, sysprefs issue remains. Ive reported the fault to apple anonymously (have copy of report if that helps). Here are the console messages during a number of restarts and subsequent attempts to open sys prefs. If you/others need more please let me know (the last line represents me forcing a quit of sysprefs):

  • HELP!! iTunes shuts down when updating (outlook) contacts

    HELP!!
When synching iPod, all music and playlists synch fine -- BUT DURING CONTACT UPDATE, iTunes gives error "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Have tried to click on "contacts" tab to disable contact synching, but iTunes application shuts down immediately.
How do I fix this, or disable the contact sharing "feature"
Have already reloaded newest iTunes software and still was unable to disable contact sharing
Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!

    hmmmmm.
do you have a feel for the times at which the crashes have occurred?
if so, let's have a look in your Event logs to see if there's any info showing up in there about the crashes.
right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage". click "Event Viewer".
have a look through the Application and System logs to see if there are any error or warning events that consistently coincide with the itunes crashes.
if you find a candidate type of event (or events), click on an example of each one to bring up a small window. note down the Source, Event ID and Description of each event, and report back with your findings.

  • Help! no restart/shut down

I've been looking at some of the posts. It seems others have had this problem, but it hasn't helped much.
I have an eMac that will not shut down, unless you manualy shut it down. When choose shut down, it goes into a blue screen (like its goint to restart) and it just pops back up. Some times it does it when I choose an option on an aplication. It was doing it when I hit the eject/volume/contrast keys but that stoped.
I've tried unpluging printer/scanner, software restore disk, re-installing, process viewer technique, user permission repair.
    Whats next?
I need help please, I'm a Graphic Designer and this eMac is how I eat. HELP!

    SoloMan,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You mention disconnecting a scanner/printer. What manufacturer? One of the first suspects in any wake / sleep /shutdown problem is spurious signals on the USB bus, and one of the main culprits are multifunction/all-in-one devices and scanners. Specificly, the auto-scan via a button on the device; if enabled, that's been associated with the problem (apparently most of the software that's scanning the USB bus for the scan button signal tend to interpret any bit of noise on the USB bus as a vaalid signal and tries to interrupt the shutdown/wake/sleep process.
The software for your scanner/printer may have an option to disable the "watch for scan button" feature (e.g., HP Director on their all-in-one products). Try disabling that if available. If the software doesn't support disabling the watch-for-scan-button, try uninstalling that part of the software.
On a related idea: multifuntion/all-in-one software that I'm familar with always asks for an administrative password before it will install. Run Disk Utility > Repair permissions after any installer that asks for an admin password; some installers are nortorious for messing up system file permissions that their programs have no business even going near let aloone modifying (HP and Adobe are the major offenders in that regard).

  • Once and for all, Sleep or Shut down?

Just wondering if it is better to let my PB sleep after usage,
or shut it down after usage. I've read somewhere on one of the boards
that it is better for PB to sleep rather than shutdown in a long run because of an electric shock that is sent to the motherboard each time PB is turned on (I don't know.. That's what I read).
Oh, and plz let me know same thing goes for an iMac as well. For an iMac, I've read on one of the boards(yup, I read a lot) that it shouldn't be left on more than 8 hours or something, even if it is a sleep. People are saying different things based on different ideas, and I want this settled once and for all. Thanks in advance.

    Pete:
Your practice of shutting down when you leave your iMac unattended is perfectly acceptable. I, too, live in an area with plenty of lightning storms, and Hurricane Katrina caused a number of power problems in Baton Rouge. I do have a UPS, however, and highly recommend them.
I usually sleep my iMac overnight and when I'm taking breaks, but shut it down when it's going to be unattended for a while. Even a big UPS can run out of battery power, and I don't want my data and directory at risk if that were to happen.
Don't worry about the "stresses" of restarting an iMac. If the computer is within specs, it is designed to handle quite a few thousand restarts. No big deal. Your computer will become obsolete before it is worn out by daily restarts.
Besides, an occasional restart is a Very Good Thing. It cleans out the 'cobwebs' that can accumulate during uptime, as well as Virtual Memory swap files and other temporary files used by the operating system and some of your applications. Remember that an iMac isn't a server. It doesn't have error-tolerant RAM; bits can get twiddled over time. Whoops! There went another cosmic ray. So trying to set records for the longest uptime between restarts really isn't prudent, especially if you have valuable data.
Edit add: My data is worth far more to me than the cost of my iMac, so I'm more concerned about protecting it than my computer. But I've been acting this way for many years, with many Macs, and have never had a hardware failure.

  • Help! MBP wont shut down or restart

My MacBook Pro has decided it doesnt ever want to shut down or restart. Whenever I try one of those two commands, it just freezes with everything cleared off the desktop except for my desktop background.
I actually usually leave the machine on most of the time, either working or in sleep mode, so it doesnt affect my daily operations...functions properly MOST of the time, but I'm afraid of the lingering effects of never having gone through the "shutdown" procedure. It's also odd that "restart" results in the same behavior.
Here's what I have tried so far:
    - Reset PMU (or SMC or whatever it's now called)
    - Zapped the PRAM
    - Repair Permissions
    - Run all command line maintenance scripts (daily, weekly, monthly)
    - Boot up in safe mode, then try shutting down (no avail)
Anyone have any ideas why this is happening and what i can do to resolve it? I've read similar threads in the forum, but haven't found an answer that worked.
I also recall there being some system log file that can be viewed or posted that shows what the culprit might be, but I can't seem to remember what it was called and where it was stored.
    thanks
    -Ken

You can go into the applications/utilities folder and launch an application call Console. This will allow you to look at certain log files. The more important log is the system log. check that for any errors. There is also a crash log. I don't have access to my mac right now so I can't tell you how to get access to it.

  • Blue Box doesn't shut down on Win XP - HELP! HAve to shut down using Task Manager???

Is it really true that you must shut the Blue Box down using Task Manager on Windows XP operating system???
On Win 98/NT/2000 the you can shut the Blue Box down by double clicking the Blue Box and shut it down. When I check the Task Manager it really is shut down.
However, on Windows XP when I shut the Blue Box down in the same manner - it still resides in the Task manager. If I try to start the Blue Box again after shutting it down a popup window is displayed stating there is already an instance of Blue Box running.
Any help would be appreciated - we cannot open the Task Manager and terminate the NIFB.exe in our application.
    THANX!

It is a bug of NI-FBUS 2.3.6 version, please send e-mail to "[email protected]" for further information.
The next NI-FBUS 3.0 version would solve this problem as I know.

  • HELP! L305D-S5881 shuts down while playing

I bought a satellite L305D-S5881 about a year ago. It never malfunction or anything. About a month ago I was playing Heroes of Might&Magic Dark Messiah when it suddenly shut down. When I turn it back on, just before windows loads it shut down again. I unplugged de laptop, waited a couple of minutes, and worked perfectly.I didn't pay much attention, I wasn't able to play again for work issues, the computer seemed to work just fine, it remained on for days and nothing happened. Yesterday I tried a couple of games, knights of the old republic and king's bounty and it did exactly the same thing. About five minutes after i start to play, the computer crashes. It shuts down, if i want to start it right away, same thing, before windows loads. Wait a couple of minutes, and it just works perfectly.
I've tried another game, mass effect 2, and it work just fine, the computer doesn't crash.
I don't have the slightest idea what it's happening, and i'll be very gratefull if someone could help me.

See my post, about the same issue, here: http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/General-Technology/Satellite-A205-intermittently-turning-off/td-p...
The reason it starts back up after waiting a few minutes, I've read in other forums, is there is like a "safety" power surge protector which gets tripped when a surge happens. You wait a few minutes for that to reset and the laptop will turn back on. When you tax the system it tries to draw more power and a surge happens again. This is likely due to a bad AC adapter (which can be cheaply replaced), or something internal (bad solder on the motherboard, loose wire connections).

  • Help with iMovie 4 shutting down

I have made a movie, saved it, and am now trying to make a DVD using iDVD. I select, iDVD and then "create an iDVD project". It gives me the option to render my clips, and I select that. Then, iMovie shuts down completely. I have never had this happen before. Please help.
    Anne
P.S. I'm built the movie in PAL because I needed to send it to China first, and then am burning the DVD in NTSC. I've done this before without having an issue.

It gives me the option to render my clips, and I select that.
Don't! It will give you bad quality. Better to let iDVD do the rendering.
