First of all, look in the garbage. It's easy to move a folder there without knowing it.
Second, do a Spotlight Search (Cmd-Space), and search for a file you know should be there. If you find the file, there's a good chance that the other files you're looking for are there, too.
If you're in kind of a crisis mode, coming up with pat advice probably isn't a good policy - but I suggest investing in a backup drive in case anything goes wrong. A program like Time Machine can be a life saver.

Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

  • All songs have vanished from iPod and iTunes won't read it

Hi there. I’m experiencing a rather distressing problem with my 60GB iPod Photo.
I was listening to the iPod yesterday morning and nothing was out of the ordinary. Then I plugged it into my work computer (a desktop G4) and iTunes popped up with the “iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod… please Restore…” message. However, the computer still recognizes the iPod as a drive (and my files are still present).
More problematic is that when I ejected the iPod, all my songs were missing, even though they are still in there somewhere because I only have 15GB of space available.
I have tried resetting the iPod and that hasn’t worked. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will only restore as a last resort because I don’t have all my music on my computer’s harddrive.

    Hi yodini,
sorry to hear that. If, as you say, your ipod is still recognized as a drive, you could try to copy all your music (assuming it is still on your iPod) from your iPod using the following method. This is a major operation and it definitely helps if you are a little familiar with the terminal. You need to have Apple Development Tools installed for this, otherwise you have to work with hidden files. If you do not have Apple Development Tools installed and first want to see if your music still works and it is worth the effort, follow the steps 1-6.
    1. Connect your iPod.
    2. It should show up on the Desktop as "YouriPodsNameHere".
    3. Go to the terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
    4. Now we need to navigate to your iPod. In the terminal window type "cd" (without the quotation marks), add a space, (do not hit return yet) and drag your iPod from the Desktop and drop it into the Terminal. On your terminal prompt should now read "cd /Volumes/YouriPodsNameHere/". Hit the return key.
    5. Then we need to navigate to the hidden music files. Type "cd iPod_Control" hit return and then type "cd Music" and hit return, always without quotation marks.
    6. Let's check if your music works. Type "ls" and return. A list should appear, starting with something like F00, F01, F02 etc. Take the first entry in the list, let's say it is F00 and type in "open F00". A finder window appears with all the music in folder F00. The files will be called something like AAVP.m4a. Right click or control click the first one and go to "Open With" and choose "Quicktime Player". One random piece of your music should play now. If we got that far, we know (at least some of) your music is still intact.
    7. Let's copy the music from your iPod to the computer. Create a new folder on the Desktop and call it "Music". Go back to the terminal, make sure a) that you have enough space on your computer hard disk (60 GB) and b) that you are still in the folder
    "/Volumes/YouriPodsNameHere/iPod_Control/Music/".
If not, repeat steps 3 to 5.
Now type "cp -r * ~/Desktop/Music/". Hit return and wait until the prompt reappears. This can take quite a while (hours), your computer has to move gigabytes of data through a USB or FireWire connection! If your prompt reappears, you can enter "ls ~/Desktop/Music/" to see if you succeeded. This should list all the F00, F01 etc. folders.
    8. We have now copied all the music to the Music folder on the Desktop, but it is still invisible in the finder! This is where you need the Development Tools. If you have the tools installed, type
    "/Developer/Tools/SetFile -a v ~/Desktop/Music/*"
and hit return. Then restart the finder (For example  Menu-> Force Quit -> Finder -> Relaunch or log out and log in again). Now you can see all your Music in the finder.
Now you only have to copy your stuff back to your library without creating a lot of duplicates or without deleting ratings and play counts... This is another story, which creates a new set of challenges. Let me know if you got that far and we can discuss what to do next.
Please note that there are also commercially available programs that can get music off your iPod onto the computer (e.g. Yamipod, Senuti, iPodRip) that will be much more userfriendly. However, I am not sure if they will work if iTunes does not recognize your Music and it does not show up on your iPod.
Disclaimer: Everything described above is a bit tricky and working with the terminal has always the potential to ruin your data. So please be careful and decide if the music on your iPod is worth the effort. Let me know if you have questions and/or need specific help.
    Hope that helps, Lars

  • Songs have vanished

Hello all, Can anyone help me out with a problem that has surfaced over the past week. All of my songs in my liabrary have vanished i.e. Your Music > Your Songs.  All of my downloaded playlists are still there and I can play those, but everything that was not in a playlist has disappeared and plus, I used to be able to shuffle through my entire catalogue without having to go into playlists. Does anyone know what might have happened? Thanks

I am having this same exact problem.Logging out than back in did not solve it, and reinstalling Spotify did not solve it.

  • HT2905 All my songs have a unrequested duplicate with iCloud tag to download. How to delete without deleting the lot?.

The HT 2905 is for duplicate contacts? ; no help to solve MY problem which is : I can't delete the iCloud duplicate song. I get a warning that all songs will be deleted from the computer, I pods and so on. I want  to delete only the duplicates NOT ALL the songs. This is frustrating.

Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks. If you have multiple references to the same files then don't send to the recycle bin, and the files will be left behind for the other entries to use. Use my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

  • Help my tool bars have vanished!

When I opened Illustrator CS5 today I notice all of my tool bars have vanished. I would like to know how to get them back. I'm using Windows.

Yay! it worked! The CTRL-AlT-Shift worked. I have to say when I contacted Adobe support they were no help whatsoever, just kept wanting me to buy a new program. I'm disappointed in the company's loyalty to their customers, especially for those of us who will use their products for a long time. While I don't intend to buy every updated version of the software that comes about I intend to buy them. If I'm going to spend $300+ for a program I better get lifetime support for that program.

  • ITunes 11 - all my songs have duplicated? Help!!

I am doing my friends iTunes on their brand new laptop. I downloaded iTunes 11, and copied the music from my harddrive into the 'Automatically add to iTunes" folder.
The only issue I have is that all songs are duplicated!?
When I go to the path name for the duplicated songs, it is exactly the same - however only appears once on my laptop folder.
I have tried unchecking "Show iTunes in the cloud purchases" but this doesn't help.
    Any suggestions?

  • HT1751 I successfully captured a recent itunes library, but then all the songs have "!" marks next to them and won't play. I have thousands of songs in multi folders of my external hard drive, surely there is a way to auto locate all songs on my hard driv

My desktop PC recently crashed and I'm trying to recapture all of my iTunes library playlist and songs. I was able to successfully capture the library, however when I tried to play a song, all have the exclamation mark "!" on them and ask that I locate the song. I successfully located some, but there has to be an automatic way to do this, rather than finding each one. I have thousands of songs located in multiple folders of my exteernal hard drive and need a way to find all songs automatically. Can someone help? Thanks!

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • All my downloads have vanished - is there any way to recover them?

Today, I started downloading a file, and opened the Downloads window to check on speed. As I watched (and without clicking on anything after pulling the list up on the screen) the entire download history vanished, apart from the currently downloading file. Is there any way to get it back? I've tried searching for a deleted version of the places.sqlite file, but it seems it simply updated the existing file in deleting my data, and so there is no old version for me to use to recover my downloads. Note that my history is intact, with no problem there at all. But the download list is stubbornly empty. I've tried restarting the browser, but even that had no effect.
I know about database expiration, and pruning away old data, but I lost literally everything, even things I downloaded ten minutes earlier.
I am guessing that the download history is gone for good now, but I have to say it's not reasonable for a browser to act so destructively to user data without a specific user request, and without a way of recovering from the browser's failure.
Why not automatically backup these important sqlite files in the same way as bookmarks etc are backed up? Very poor indeed.

Are they removed from the Downloads folder in the Library?
Also note the the downloads are treated differently when you are in private browsing mode and are only shown temporarily on the about:downloads page (this page works in both modes).
Downloads would normally not be removed unless you would clear the downloads via the right-click context menu or otherwise clear (recent) history.

  • Help-- all downloaded songs deleted

When I wasn using iTunes just now, I got a message that said "iTunes cannot recognize some songs because the software is not recognized" (something to that effect, I don't remember the exact wording). I pressed OK and all of my downloaded songs are now deleted. My ipod was plugged in so they got erased from the ipod as well. The songs uploaded from CD are still there. How can I get them back? Why did this error message happen? I have the most recent version of iTunes, and I can't think of how this happened. Thanks in advance.

I think the new update for itunes has a bug on it cause last night it gave me a message for a song saying something like I didn't have permission or the song was copyrighted. I have had the same music on my Pod for months and that just happened after I downloaded the new Update.

  • Used contact categories - now all my contacts have vanished?

My question has to do with Contacts. This is my first blackberry which I've only had a couple of weeks, I was adding some new contacts and came about an option which enabled me to categories my contacts into 'personal' and 'business'.   I selected personal because the contact I was adding was a personal contact. However, when I now open my contacts from the main menu all of the business contacts I have added to date have disappeared.  I have tried to retrace my steps and undo what I have done but I can't figure out how I have managed to this. I have ‘de-selected’ the personal category in the personal contact I added but all my other contacts are still missing.   I’d appreciate your help. Many thanks in advance.
