HELP! all my stuff is gone and my child's is in it's place.

One of my children synced their ipod on my account when all they intended to do was charge it on my computer. Now all I can see is their ipod (different name than mine) and all their content, but none of mine, including music, apps and pictures. How do I get my stuff back and theirs off?

As you've just discovered, changing the name of your home folder is not recommended.
Here's a link to a Knowledge Base article that will tell you how to recover your original home folder (and all its data).
I've also pasted the results from Sherlock for the same procedure:
To correct a home folder whose name has been changed:
Locate the User's folder on your hard disk and open it.
Select the home folder with the original short user name and the home icon. This folder usually contains a Desktop folder and a Library folder.
Add "_new" to the end of the name so that you can distinguish it later.
Select the regular folder that has the name you used when you changed your original home folder. This folder should contain items you would expect to find in your original home folder, such as your Pictures folder, Documents folder, and so on. Change the name of this folder back to the original short user name.
Log out, then log in again and verify that items are back where they belong.
And, for when everything is back to normal, here's another KB article that tells you how to change the short user name safely - as you will see, it's a complicated process to change the short user name and you really have to ask yourself whether it's worth all those steps!

  • I was trying to change my home folder nickname to a different name I then restarted my computer and now all my stuff are gone. What can I do to get them back

I was trying to rename my home folder I then restart my computer and now all my stuff are gone. Can anyone help?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /Users/ as the path, and move the files to your current home folder. Alternatively, open the Accounts or Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, unlock it, control-click your account, choose Advanced Options, and change the path to the home folder.

Antivirus has a tendency to freeze iTunes sync Operation with iPod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your iPod filesystem, so when iTunes can't read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
    My suggestion.
Connect your iPod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your Ipod to the PC
When iTunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well, since you got such a huge library.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
If this doesn't resolve your problem, then let me know.
    Good Luck!

  • Upgraded to v6 iphone software, all my contacts have gone, and I can't connect to my email.  Other web pages seem ok.  Help!

    Hi
Can anyone help me?  Since upgrading to v6 of the iphone software the other day, all my contacts have gone, and I can't connect to orange contacts restore to get them back, or access my email. Other web pages seem ok.
When I try to connect to the orange backup app, the connection just times out and says connection error.  When I try to access my email it says verify i have put the correct a/c info into mail settings.
Both things were fine before I updated.

When you connect the iPad to the computer can you see any apps in the apps list at all in iTunes?
Connect the iPad to the computer and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Apps Tab on the right.
Do you see apps in that apps list? If you do, click on all of the apps that you want to sync.
Click on the Sync Apps Heading.
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes

Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking bar, tap & hold any icon until they all start to wiggle, tap the red minus sign & close every app listed, tap home button when finished. Then reset your phone:
Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release.

  • My friend wanted to get some of the music off my itunes. when syncing it needed to udate her phone which it did - now all her photos are gone. and the last back up was from when she used my itunes 6  ago. How can we get back her photos :(Please help

My friend wanted to get some music off my itunes - when syncing it it said she had to update her phone software first - which it did. Now all her photos are gone. When we tried to restore the last back up - the only one was from when she used my itunes 6 months ago which was from her old iphone. So now it has put all her photos from her old phone onto her new iphone and deleted all the new ones. We cannot find her new photos. Please help and there was 100 new pics. Is there any way we can get them back. I already have the program Asoftech - but it doesnt seem to register the iphone only C and D drive. Please help!

This is called "stealing". You do not have the legal right to give her the music you have in your iTunes library unless you are the copyright holder.
when syncing it it said she had to update her phone software first
That's not quite what it said.  Someone should have paid more attention to the great big warning about the possibility of losing data if the phone wasn't backed up.

It restored the backup that was made on your computer 6 months ago, which did not contain those photos. You're wasting your time trying to find them on the phone. They don't exist.
Hopefully, your friend syncs her phone to her own computer on a regular basis. She needs to plug her phone into her computer and restore it from her last backup. That will restore it to the state it was in when the backup was made.
She also needs to get in the habit of extracting the photos on a regular basis, like she would from any other digital camera.

  • HELP!! All my stuff is gone.

I don't know how this came to be but I have lost all my music, documents and pics. And I remembered renaming the "Home" icon under "Finder" to another name. Every setting now is back to default and I can't find all my stuff even when using Spotlight. But the funny thing is, if I can't find my files, why does my hard drive still have the same amount of space? Anyways after renaming the Home icon, it hasn't changed and when I try to change it, it says the name has been taken up. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I can't find anything to help me restore it to the point b4 all this screw ups happened.
    Thanks,
    Desmond

  • My iphone4 performed 2 backups, one with all my stuff on it and one without.  How do I get my stuff from the previous backup?

In the process of updated to iOS 5, my iphone4 performed a backup, after installing IOS5 it performed ANOTHER backup (not sure why), but without all my stuff being synced from iTunes, now the backup file (and my phone) contain NOTHING!
How do I get the data from my previous backup back?!? Please Help!!  I have already looked into the backup fies on my PC and everything is from the second backup.
I really need my contacts and photos back

Ok. I have 2 hard drives and one of them died apparently so..not knowing what to do, I did chose reinstall Lion after command r open start-up. The whole thing is a mess but my computer is back up and running with the second hard drive. I had a time machine backup which I've been dragging stuff out of. i had to re enter serial numbers and do all sorts of initial set up stuff. 1) How do I get all of my icons (like my HD icon and external drives icons) to appear on my desktop again? I can only find them through a finder window. 2) i now have to type a password to get into my computer (user) - I 'm the only user and don't want to have to do that.

  • HELP!!! Contacts gone and backup assistant isnt restoring them?

I lost my contacts 2 months ago on my iphone 4s. The numbers were saved in my text messages though, so I went by those, and re entered the names to match, etc. That saved half of them (115). Then, it happened again last week. so, same thing, and this time, downloaded the Verizon BackUp Assitant app, and synced as I added the names back in. Today, same thing happened, contacts gone, and nothing in my backUp assistant...PLEASE HELP! I have my own business, so contacts are crucial to my every move!!

Verizon backup assistant stinks.  My 4s keeps dumping my contacts and backup assistant dumped them all too.  You stink

  • After restart, all user settings are gone and reset to defaults

Hi after waking up my iMac from sleep today, it appeared something had gone wrong (apps not responding…notification that my external drives had "not been ejected correctly" etc). I restarted. After restart, and logging back in to my regular user account, all user settings were missing and reset to factory defaults: Desktop reset to the "wave", Dock reset, Download folder missing (grey question mark), Dropbox unable to connect, Safari bookmarks missing (but still on my iPhone-- so it's a local iMac problem, not an issue with iCloud), small things like mouse scrolling prefs reset etc.
Basically all of my user preferences are missing. I've seen a number of threads about how to fix some of these items individually, but seems like there is a single corrupt preference file somewhere maybe?
I've repaired permissions a few times (there were a lot), and restarted but nothing has fixed it yet.
I had been logged out of iCloud, but once I logged back in, my Mail came back (just my me.com account-- still missing my Gmail, will need to reset I guess), along with Calendar and Contacts-- those are ok.
I keep all my files on an external LaCie RAID, and that all appears to be fine. Folders all intact etc.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks for your help!

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.
