Help! All of my photos are "missing".

I currently have Lightroom 3. I was working on my blog earlier, and all of my photos were there. Once I finished w/ my blog, I got back into lightroom. One by one, the little question mark appeared in each photo of my film strip. I checked each of the folders I had and they all did the same thing. When I try to recover the photos, they can't be found. Most of the files in Lightroom were digital negatives. Once I exported them to my hard drive, I changed them to jpeg. Since the files don't match, is there any way to recover the original digital negaitives in Lightroom? I am also missing some jpeg files in Lightroom and all of my presets/templates!
I do have my whole computer backed up on an external hard drive. I'm just not sure how to recover the photos.

How did you do the search that resulted in "can't be found"?
Did you at any time move the photos or folders (or rename them) outside of Lightroom? Did your drive with the photos change letters/change name?

I have no idea what you mean by this. It sounds like you are saying you changed your digital negatives to JPG, but that can't be right. What did you change to jpg? How did you do this? Please explain further

All my old photos are missing from iPhoto on my Mac- any one have ideas on how to retrieve?

Do you have a Time Machine backup or any backup of your Mac? Then you could try to restore from the backup.
If your photos are very important documents, you could also try data recovery software. Usually the trial versions are free, but if you want to safe the recovery photos you have to pay.  Disk Drill works well to recover jPEG photos, see:  http://www.cleverfiles.com/
It is still not obvious what might have happened to your iPhoto Library.  Have you searched for different iPhoto Libraries?
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • All of my photos are missing from time machine after Apple Genius Bar factory reset my macbook

I backed up my MacBook to Time Machine so that the Apple Genius Bar could factory reset my MacBook. It was running slow and I wanted everything deleted, so I could add back just photos and music. When I tried to find the iPhoto Library pictures on the time machine they were missing. Has anyone else had this problem? I have lost all my photos since I got the computer in 2008.

What I assume happened is they erased and installed the MacintoshHD partition which includes all accounts, files and OS X.
You now have a new account or the same name, but it's actually different and can't access your files because they belong to the previous account.
I think your supposed to use Migration Assistant in your Applications > Utilties folder, then transfer the account to the machine. You log into the account and can transfer files via the Dropbox to the new user account.
Combine two+ Users Accounts on the same machine
Once the files are transferred you can delete the old account.
Next time if you just want certain files returned, use a normal external storage drive instead, then you can simply Get Info and "Ignore permissions on this volume" (aka external drive) return those certian files and do a #6 Repair Users Permissions to set the ownership to your new account.

  • Iphone photos are missing

I noticed incoming calls do not have contact photos showing.  Now all the contact photos are missing.  This is very frustrating -- and I'm not sure how to recover.  Please help!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Photos from back up will be added back once the restore process has completed, give it some time.
Meantime, don't be deleting your old back up.

  • HELP!!  I viewed my "backup" files, and now ALL of my photos are no longer "linked" to Lightroom.

I thought I was missing some files, so I viewed my backup files.  I received a "warning" that Lightroom would restart and view my backup files.  I did NOT receive any warning, that there was NO GOING BACK!!  I've tried everything.  I cannot re-link ANY of my photos.  Well, I did just do one, and it told me all the other photos in the folder were corrupt and Lightroom would not be able to edit them (and no, it was not an exported .jpeg file).  Fortunately, I am not concerned about this folder, that's why I tested it.  I was forced to moved all of my photos from my C drive to my D drive because for some weird reason on this computer, my D drive is 5 times bigger and I ran out of room.  When I did that, I was able to relink all the pictures.  Sadly, it didn't keep my Folders, it just relinked them all by date.  That I can deal with, even though it makes finding photos much more difficult, but I wasn't about to try to rename any of them and have to relink again.
Now, I can't relink any of them because it appears in Lightroom that all photos are back in the C drive and therefore, the new photos that I placed on the D drive are not there, and nothing will relink, period, not even the ones that were originally on my C drive!
I have never been so aggravated in my life.  I LOVE Lightroom capabilities.  I have version 2.3.  When I look it up on the online help, all I get is how the photos are in whatever location they were saved, but they are linked, etc.  I already know that part.  I seriously wish I had NEVER looked at my backup files.  I don't think I'll bother backing up stuff anymore because apparently looking at the backup messes up everything.
I fully anticipated that I would be able to go back, choose my folders on my D drive and have all of my current photos available.  Sadly, not.
My user name should be FREAKED OUT!

Thanks!  I've been practicing deep breathing between yelling at my computer.  I use Windows 7.  I was in my "regular" Lightroom photos, and I couldn't locate some pictures I took last December.  So, I thought, well, why not look at the back up files?  I'm normally excellent at remembering exact steps, but I'm so worried about all of my thousands of photos, I can only explain what I think I did.  I went into Windows Explorer, and chose the backup files.  When I did, I received the warning about Lightroom restarting and loading the backup photos.  I hesitated for a full minute, but thought, well, isn't that what backup files are for?  So, I selected it. Lightroom opened the backup photos without any problem.  But, when I went back, and tried opening the photos that were linked to Lightroom, they were no longer linked.  When I click on the formerly linked photos, they just open in Windows Explorer, not Lightroom.  When I open Lightroom, it has says all the photos are "missing."  All of the folders are listed in my C drive (in Lightroom), not where they'd been moved to on my D drive.  The one photo I relinked, stated the photos in that folder could not be edited in Lightroom.  So, I'm afraid to try to relink anymore of them. Also, as I said, any photos that I originally imported to my D drive are not showing up in Lightroom at all.
I would say, I normally learn software quickly. That was my experience with Lightroom.  I installed it, went through all of the online training sessions, and have loved it.  Admittedly, I'm sure there are features that I don't make use of that many people do, but I'm just a passionate photography nut, not a professional.
The online help basically explains the linking, and even how to relink if you "move" a file, a folder to another location.  It doesn't cover this, or not where I can find it.
I've think I've given up on yelling at the computer, now I just have knots in my stomach about getting photos relinked.  I have probably 80% of them exported, with the adjustments I made, but that does not make me feel one bit better.
    Thanks!!!

  • All my calendar events are missing!!! help!

All my calendar events are missing....can anyone help?  Iphone 4s

If you are syncing your calendar with a supported program like Outlook using iTunes, just sync them back.  If not, all you can do is restore your phone from the backup created the last time you synced your phone.  Note: this will revert all your data and settings to those contained in the backup, not just your calendar.  Be sure to import any recent photos to your computer before doing so or you will lose them.
If you want to do this, prior to connecting your phone, open iTunes and go to Preferences.  On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically."  Then connect your phone, when it appears on the left sidebar in iTunes, right-click on its name and select Transfer Purchases (to transfer any recent purchases to your iTune library).  Then right-click again and choose Restore from backup.

  • All my photos are missing in iphoto 4.0.3.

All the photos are missing in my iphoto 4.0.3. The files are on the side under source but the screen also stays blank in every file. What to do?

I had a similar situation with some of my photos, not all of them. During help from a genius at Apple an error occurred and we feared I might have lost my photos. When the problem was "fixed", the photos showed up as being taken the same day and no longer in the original order. In addition numerous photos were gone.
I'm told the photos still exist on the HDD but just can't be found by iPhoto. If this is the case how do I find them? Would I be able to do a search for all jpg files to do this?
On a side note: I've backed up my HDD to an external drive and I'm about to erase my HDD and update Panther to Tiger. When I move the user files back to the HDD I plan on consolidating them into one user.
    Any insight is most appreciated.

Go to the develop module and highlight all of the images in the filmstrip at the bottom of the screen. Then activate Auto-sync and click on the Reset button. That should reset all of the images to your camera default settings.

  • In the last 36 hours my photos have jumbled within various albums. Random photos have attached at the end of an unrelated album, old photos have appeared again on Recently Added, some photos are missing but still on "collections". No date order

Within the last 36 hours my photo albums have turned into a real jumbled mess. Random photos have appeared at the bottom of my Recently Added album. In most cases it's a copy of a photo that was taken months or years ago so now it appears twice.. 200 random photos have appeared in an unrelated album.  Some photos are missing completely. The date order is correct in some places and then it goes back and forth over the months and years. The "collections" appears to be okay.  This morning when I went into the photo app About 50 photos that were permanently deleted 3 months ago reappeared on the Recently Added Album which  I deleted again.  if  I delete these irreplaceable photos from the unwanted album it will delete the photo completely. Help please - this is so annoying and frustrating. I hate to think when I turn the iPad on tmoor row what else will have changed .

    Quick Update:
I usually have my Mac laptop up with Messages running on it.  As you know, it will receive the same messages you send/receive on your iPhone.  I thought all my old photos would be there too, but they have all disappeared as well except for the last few.
Messages is supposed to archive all old photos to  a directory called ~/Library/Messages/Attachments.  On my mac, this was a 0 byte file that was created back in Jan 2014.  As a result, none of the old photos got saved on my Messages app either.  I looked at a Time Machine Backup and it has been the case since September (no earlier backups available).  So, it's unclear how long this issue has been going on for my Messages app and how related it is to my iPhone problem.
In any case, if any of you use Messages, you may be able to recover your photos in that directory provided it didn't get trashed like mine did.  I moved the file and created a new Attachments directory.  Upon relaunch, Messages started properly storing new photos in there again.
Either there was a really terrible bug in the Apple software or something malicious has happened.
P.S.  I'm running OS 10.9.5 Mavericks.   There is a thread of people with this problem on Yosemite here:
No pictures are shown in Message om Mac
This seems like a pretty seriously terrible bug.  I will be talking again to AppleCare on Wednesday and I hope they can escalate this.

  • IPhoto-I need help identifying where the photos are

On another forum (Mac rumours), somebody posted:
the way iPhoto works is that when you import pictures into iPhoto, it will be stored on an iPhoto library file, literally called "iPhoto Library". This file is normally stored in your "Pictures" folder, but if you moved it to an external hard drive, thats where it will be. So any stray pictures you can see outside of iPhoto (for example, any pictures you see in your pictures folder) doesn't necessarily mean its in iPhoto, and are not actually linked to iPhoto in any way. So anything you do to those, whether its delete, edit, or move, the iPhoto library will not capture those changes since it has its own copy of the file stored in the iPhoto library file.
My Q is this: I see numerous photos right below the iPhoto library, in Finder (see below): are the .jpg files that I see, the ones that are in my iPhoto library? In others words, if I delete them, will they also be deleted from my iPhoto library? It would seem from the above posting that the "stray" photos are *not* part of the iPhoto library, but I'm unclear as to whether this is so, or whether I've misunderstood what they wrote. I want to know if the individual jpg's (that are listed under iphoto library, *are* my photos within my iPhoto library.
    Thanks very much!

    Keith:
Thanks a lot for this. So, I *have* checked the iPhoto Library (by that, I mean clicking on iPhoto library-the 20.12 gb file you see above in my screenshot) and my photos are all there. At least, I'm 99.9% sure they are *all* there. I've created albums and moved some photos into albums, but suffice to say that when I open iPhoto, I have 2,000+ photos in "Photos" and in my most recent album I have 900; when I count the # in the above screen shot, there are approx 1,100 so I'm sure I have all or most of them. I'm just wondering how they got there....
    Terrence:
I didn't make any change to the Library settings and the box *is* checked so I'm presuming I don't have a referenced library. My iPhoto library is on my external hard drive-I've chosen that location to import my photos from my iPhone, With that, what is the difference between my iPhoto library and a folder called "iphoto libraries"; I must have created the folder called iPhoto libraries, but the jpg's that are in that folder are also the photos/files that are in my iPhoto library....give or take a few (I've deleted some along the way from my iPhoto library).
I'm not understanding the structure of the files, i.e., can I safely delete the .jpg files in the folder "iPhoto libraries"? Terrence-from what you can see in the screenshot, did I manually copy the files to that location? I don't recall doing so. All I know is that I imported my photos from my iPhone to my external hard drive.
When I click on iPhoto library....the large file (20.12 gb) all of my photos are there.
Many thanks for any clarification you can provide (I'm happy to provide further screen shots for you if it will help you make sense of my structuring)!

  • Room.  All of my photos are filed as Events. Is it possible to back them up in such a way that they are kept in the same Events that they are currently stored?

I use iPhoto and iMovie and I want to safely take the media off my Mac Air (to give me more space) and store it for future use. All of my photos are stored as "Events". Is it possible to store them on an external NAS drive in such a way that they are kept in the same Events folder that they are currently stored so that I can, in the future, reload them onto the Air in the same Events folder?  I really do not want to have to create and name folders for thousands of photos!
    Your help is appreciated!

Easiest solution: move the Library to an external disk:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Note: you cannot use a NAS for an iPhoto Library.
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • My iphoto photos are missing, what should i do?

    hi
my iphoto photos are missing, what should i do?
    can anyone help me please.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • All my imovie events are missing after latest maverick and imovie 10 update

    Hi,
I updated to Mavericks, and updated iMovie. I opened up iMovie and it says that all the original files are missing. It suggests to try and re-import the files, but I cannot find them anywhere on my computer. I am missing hours of footage, and I have no idea where it has gone.  It appears that the old iMovie is there, and I can click it open, but all the files are missing from there too.  Anybody have any ideas as to what happened, or what can I do to get my movie clips back?

    Same issue here.
Deleted the UpdatedToiMovie10 file (0 bytes) and relaunched iMovie. Starts off OK, then
Then although I can see the names of all the project files in the sidebar and they are still in the iMovies9 folder, and iMovies9 still works as normal, iMovies10 just displays
    But that doesn't work either.
Tried running the permissions repair and there were hundreds flagged as incorrect, but that didn't cure it either.
    Any ideas?
