HELP! All photos in iPhoto library are gone

This is weird.... I have all of my photos in a folder in my Pictures folder under "iPhoto Library," but none of them are in my actually iPhoto library. I have tried to drag the photos back in, no luck. I have tried to open my iPhoto application while holding down option, then again by holding down option + command. Nothing.
My files are in .jpg form, isn't that compatible with iPhoto? I don't want to lose these!

Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • All of my pictures from my iPhoto library are gone after upgrading to Mavericks

I just upgraded to Os X Mavericks and now all of my pictures are gone from my iPhoto library, and of course I am unable to access this version of iPhoto on OS X Mavericks.
I tried to find them using a different application or in Finder, and in both cases "iPhoto Library" is in Gray and no contents are available. My system memory doesn't seem to be reflecting the number of photos I have either.
If I go back to my old operating system will it work? If not, I have lost all my pictures since February of 2011. I have been crying nonstop for an hour trying to figure out what to do.

Open the App Store and upgrade iPhoto to the Mavericks version. Installing OS X does not do anything to your iPhoto Library.
The iWork apps are free with a new iOS device since 1 SEP 2013. They are free with a new Mac since 1 OCT 2013. They are also free with the upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 if you had the previous version installed when you upgraded.

  • How to delete ALL photos in iPhoto Library that are NOT contained in albums

I would like to delete all those photos in the iPhoto Library which I have NOT assigned to an album. How do I do this efficiently?
And conversely: how do I delete from the Library ALL the photos that ARE contained in a specific album?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or pointers (to one or to both questions).

I would like to delete all those photos in the iPhoto Library which I have NOT assigned to an album. How do I do this efficiently?
The easiest way is to put them into an album:
    New Smart album ->
Album -> Is Not -> Any
This gathers them together into an album. Then it's the same answer as the second question...
And conversely: how do I delete from the Library ALL the photos that ARE contained in a specific album?
Select the Album. Then to delete them select the pics and hold down the *command (apple) and option (or alt)* keys and hit the delete button. This will put them in the trash. Then iPhoto menu -> Empty trash.

  • HELP - All of my iPhoto library has DISAPPEARED

A week ago I installed iLife 5. I have had no problems until today. Last night I was working in iPhoto, and had no problems. Now....I open iPhoto, all of my albums are there....BUT ALL OF MY PHOTOS ARE GONE....OMG...what has happened. The scary thing about this is...I remember a similar thing happened to me several years ago, when I did an upgrade from another version of iPhoto.
HELP..anyone with some assistance out there??

    Foxall:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Look in your User/Pictures folder and see if there isn't a folder titled "iPhoto Library". If it's there then launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and when asked, navigate to the Pictures folder and select that folder. It should open. If you have library issues like a damaged database file or whatever it may not open fully or not show all the photos. If it does open and everything is there we're done. If not, but it does open, then close iPhoto and relaunch it with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all of the options. You may get some duplicates but those can be culled out after you're up and running again. If that fails post back and we can go from there.

  • Import all photos from iPhoto library

With Yosemite 10.10.3, I was able to import and upload all my photos from current iPhoto Library 2014 onto iCloud and into Photos App. But I have another iPhoto Library called iPhoto Library 2013 which contains all my 2013 photos. I had to stop that as earlier I had only 128GB SSD on my mac. Now, is there a way to get all those photos into the new Photos App?
I mean, 2014 library alone took me 2 weeks to get it all uploaded. If I switch library, it will start all over again I am afraid and it may eventually never merge into one library.
If answer is no, is there a utility that can open up my older iPhoto Library and pull all my photos out by events ? That way I can extract all the photos to external drive and then import them into my current library.
I even asked at apple store and the so called Genius said "Google it" !
Please let me know if you faced such a problem and if so what you recommend is the best solution!

It may indeed be better to start again with an empty iMac, but i am suggesting this for additional reasons. Do you need another identical iPhoto Library eating up space on your new Mac. Aperture is well able to better organise the library than iPhoto ever was.
Getting started in Aperture in a way you can continue to build on is the hardest thing to get correct at the beginning. When you do, it is a very easy matter to bring in new work in to Aperture from the camera, to build it forward in to the future, or bring in old stuff to organise retrospectively in to the past, and combine both in a way that works for you. Rather than having the trouble that seems to occur frequently here, when folks transfer to Aperture with iPhoto. Don't bring too much iPhoto baggage and forget the term Event.
Aperture is a whole new world and may be a little alien at first, and this frustrates quite a few people when switching. Try out some library structures without images. When it is to your liking then start to populate it with some images in to a nice new and powerful photo library that you know works, and in the way you want, and have got familiar with. The transition should be much easier that way.
This little snippet of information is critical to start with:
Folders hold Projects. ie Folder: 2010. Sub Folders by Season or Month. Project: Vacation, Birthday, Children, etc... Now you want the best children images together in one place, from birth to present. Albums and smart Albums do this, with the aid Powerful search tools.
I hope this helps a little. Allan

  • Not all movies in iPhoto library are added to iMovie '08 at start up

Hello, I have about 25 movies in iPhoto '08 which do not load into iMovie '08 when I open iMovie. I have two identical clips except for the title: one has a generic title and ends with .mov and the second clip was renamed in IPhoto several months ago. The first clip loads into iMovie at start up. I renamed the second clip to end in .mov but it still did not load. Can anyone help me get the clips that I renamed (prior to updating to iLife "08) to load into iMovie '08? Thank you

Changing the file extension doesn't change what is inside the container and some audio and video codecs that play in QuickTime must be converted to work with iMovie 7.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can convert most AVI's and MPEG-1 files to QuickTime formats. DV Stream is best for quality reasons but makes huge file sizes.

  • Same photos between iPhoto library and iCloud. Detected as duplicated wrongly

I use Gemini to clear duplicate photos in iPhoto library, it works well on my macbook pro, however when i run Gemini on my another mac, it found my photos in iPhoto library are duplicate with iCloud, which is wrong, and it cleans all pics in my iCloud(photo stream and shared photo).
I have the same settings in two macs, as well the Gemini.

I agree wholeheartedly  with léonie.  Uninstall Gemini and try another duplicate finder.
These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library. Select the checkbox to include orphaned photos.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

What size if the Library as indicated in the Finder?  If it's large enough to be holding your photos then your photos are probably still in there but the library is damaged.  If the tags you used indicate iLife 11 then try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the above falils to recover your photos continue with this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • When iPhoto '11 crashes after importing photos and videos, they are gone. How can I retrieve them?

iPhoto '11 randomly crashes after importing/editing/organizing photos and videos. When it does, photos and videos that I've been working on are gone. Pictures taken with iOS devices can be retrieved if they are still in Photo Stream, but videos are gone. Is there anyway I can retrieve photos and pictures that are not saved before iPhoto crashes? Also, is there anyway to prevent it from crashing? It seems iPhoto '11 is doing this since the day 1 I started using it. Thank you.

Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library
this should help with the crashes - it may or may not help with the missing videos

Help! All my old photos in iPhoto library have vanished!
