Help...anchored objects in CS4 freezes Indesign

I was really excited to use anchored objects in a recent project where I wanted to insert a bunch of callout text boxes peppered throughout the document layout that would reflow with it's neighboring text as I made changes.
When I had about 4 text boxes placed, InDesign CS4 would freeze with the spinning rainbow wait cursor spinning forever. It would freeze just as I started entering settings in the "custom" anchored object dialogue window.
What am I doing wrong? Or is this a bug?
Thanks for any advice or suggestions.

I've been working on a file I created for 4 hours.  Saved properly many times, reopened and resaved with no problems.  Now it won't open.
Every other file I have opens fine, but this one just freezes up the program.   I tried recovering, deleting the recovery file, etc....
It sounds like Peter has it hand, but some possibilities are Preflight and SING; you can try disabling them both. What OS?
What version of InDesign? 6.0.6?

  • Anchoring objects to text in InDesign CS5.0

    Hi,
I'm trying to convert a heavily styled book with lots of photos and charts to Kindle. When I export to Kindle, it's a mess. Is it possible to anchor objects to text in CS5? I know CS5.5 can do it, but I'm having a hard time figuring it out in CS5.
Any helpful hints for making this conversion as easy as possible ... and without knowing any HTML would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I highly recommend Elizabeth Castro's ebook to learn the basics of creating EPUB files—"EPUB Straight to the Point"
Formatting ebooks - EPUB Straight to the Point
Here is how she suggests you do it in InDesign CS5:
Place the cursor in the flow of your book where you want to illustration to go (at the beginning of a paragraph).
Press Return to create a separate paragraph for the illustration
Apply an Illustration paragraph style. She suggests setting autoleading so the paragraph expands to the height of the illustration.
Choose File > Place to place the illustration in that paragraph.
If you need a caption, press return to create a new paragraph and apply the Caption style.

  • Table of Content Help - Anchored Objects/Listing Order

For the love of god this is extremely frustrating.   I have been searching for literally hours trying to find the solution.
I have a large document, linked frames from page 1 through page 44 for example.
On many pages I have figures, and using an incrementing paragraph style, these figure captions are numbered sequentially.
When generating a table of contents, any figures that are in the main linked frames are created in the proper order.
My issue is that on a few pages, I have figures inside anchored objects - basically an anchored text frame with a picture and the figure label text using my paragraph style.
These anchored objects are not being put in the table of contents in the proper order - they are being added to the end of the toc!  Indesign should be smart enough to add items on the page in the proper order - be it the main frame or an anchored one!
    For example
    Figure 1 - page 1
    Figure 2 - page 1
    Figure 3 - page 2
    Figure 5 - Page 3
    Figure 4 - Page 2 <<< huh?
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

After looking at this a bit more, this may or may not work so we might need to get dirty on this one .....................
Some clues can be found here : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-publisher/bip-bookbinding-176639.pdf
Looking at Page 7, it should be obvious that we can add additional deatils to the reports, including cover pages.
Though, after looking at Page 8, I think I may have you slightly in the wrong direction. toc-template appears to simply cover the commands for the table of contents and there is another template to control everything. But is that file visible to edit?
If you run FRConfig.cmd, you can find more clues.
Go to the MBeans tab, expand com.hyperion, then expand Financial Reporting, and Attributes.
The two attributes that immeidately jump out are TextPrintTemplate and BookTOCPrintTemplate
    - TextPrintTemplate is the FR_TextTemplate.doc file in <<EPM_ORACLE_INSTANCE>>/products/FinancialReporting/bin/ folder
    - BookTOCPrintTemplate is the toc-template.rtf file previously discussed.
Once again, though, the other template exposed to us is most likely just driving the content and is not at a high enough definition level for this to work how you want it to.
I would say to use the example in the PDF and try adding that to the table of contents page before it does all of the loops. Perhaps it will work from there, perhaps not.
If that doesn't work, Thursday we can attempt to drill into this more.
    :)

  • Still need help - Anchoring Objects

I posted earlier and thought that my problem is fixed but it isn't. This time I have a screen shot so that you can see the problem better.
Here is what it looks like when I anchor this photo to the text below it! I'm not exactly sure whether it has to do with word wrap or anchoring. I tried making the text box smaller but it doesn't help! If I anchor it to the text above it then it will pull the object into mid air!
Does anyone use Anchored objects or is it more hassel than it's worth?
    Thank you for your help!

Here's some new screen shots in helping explain my delema. I'm wanting to anchor this object to the paragraph below it, but when I do that it brings a line of text up behind/above the object.
Then I anchored the object to the paragraph below it. You can see the text on the below picture moved up above the image when I anchored it! I don't want that text up there. When I try shrinking the text box, it just moves the image down with it.
I'm wondering if on object can only be anchored to something above it, and if it isn't anchored to something above it than it brings whatever it's anchored to above the object?
    Thank you for your help!

  • Help!!! CS4 freezes over and over again

    Hello,
my Photoshop CS4 all the sudden starts to freeze, sometimes on even opening a jpg, sometimes when resizing an image, sometimes when I use the lasso tool, for no apparent reason.
Its so bad that at times it freezes my complete pc.
At first I had the note with the display driver and some freezes. I googled, updated my drivers, nothing got better, I updated CS4, nothing got better on the opposite the freezes got worse, I disbled font preview as I heard that could cause problems it didnt help either.
I use windows 7, and my graphic card is a Nvidia Geforce GTX 480
The problem started some weeks ago for no apparent reasons (no new plugins, nothing changed on my PC) and got worse by the day.
I as well emptied temp files and did reset my preferences, nothing helped

If it freezes the entire machine, you're looking at an OS bug, a low level driver bug, or bad hardware.
The most common cause is defective RAM, followed by defective motherboards, hard drives, and power supplies.
We have seen some video card drivers cause lockups.

  • CS4 text wrap over anchored object

Every time I place an anchored object (doesn't matter if it's graphic or text frame) and apply text wrap, Indesign freezes permanently and only solution is killing it via task manager.
I opened CS3 file with anchored objects w/ txt wrap and the same freeze happens when trying to move, delete or apply different wrap settings to object.
It never happened in previous version of ID on my machine.
Any solution to this problem? Thanks.
    My PC conf.:
    AMD x2 2.7
    2GB RAM
    Vista 32bit

The first thing to try is replacing your preferences.

  • New technique to place multiple anchored objects in InDesign story

    Hello,
For a while I have been trying to figure out how to insert multiple anchored objects into an Indesign story. As far as I can tell, you cannot copy multiple objects that have already been placed in a document (such as a multi-page pdf) into an InDesign story, but must copy and paste them one-by-one into the story. This is a problem for a project I am working on where I want to have a large number of 340x52 pt pdfs to flow throughout a document in a master text frame interspersed with text.
I have now found a solution for this issue that I thought I would share in case it would be helpful for anyone. It utilizes Automator actions for Mac OS X and Microsoft Word 2011 [2008 may work also, but I don't have a copy of that to test]; I am not good with scripting but perhaps similar solutions could be found for other systems and programs.
    1. If you want to place a multipage pdf within a text frame, first it into individual files for each page (with Acrobat Pro or pdftk or something similiar).
    2. Create an Automator service or program with the action "Create New Word Document". You can also use another automator action to save the document, or save it manually (to change the filename). In the finder, select the items you want, then run the service or drag them into the Automator program you have created.
    3. Place the word document into your InDesign story. Your items will now be anchored objects ordered in your text frame as they were in the finder.
Please let me know if this is helpful or if anyone has suggestions for doing this process is a more efficient way. I am not sure, but it may be the case that this approach would only work on Macs, as I gather from this thread.

I might note that I am using InDesign CS 5, and importing from a document stored in docx format.

  • CS4 Linking Text Boxes Together in Anchored Objects?

Hi. Using InDesign CS4 I have a Anchored Object that I would like to link part of it to the next one in the text frame. Example: I have grouped together a text box, a box with a placed UPC from Illustrator and another text box stacked on top of each other, all lined up. I group this and place it in a text box so I can set these at different places along a 29" document. When I have overset text, in the top box for example, I see the + sign but can't grab it to try to link the text to the next text box in the Anchored or grouped object. All I can do it change the size of the box - even when holding down the command key on the Mac with the text too enabled. I am setting it up this way so all three boxes stay together when positioning on pages. I have multiple rows of these so it makes it easier to modify. If I take the grouped set out of the text box so it's by itself I can grab the overset text. I am trying to link text boxes so it's easier and faster to flow in text from another program. Thanks.
    Pat

OK, I will try to get the whole page later. I want to keep what you see in the screen shot - one of the grouped objects - together as it goes across the page. So the 9232554 text and all bellow that would stay grouped together when I tab it over to line up to a certain spot on the page. This is placed in a text box that runs horizonal on the page, about 28"  across. I also wanted to link the 9232554 box to the 9232729 box which is just a duplicate of the group of text and UPC code before it. But from what you say, and what I tried to do, I can't. Even when all the anchored object groups are in the same long text thread. I tried not grouping  each section - the UPC code sandwiched by the text boxes, but could not place them in the long text box when not grouped togther.
I wanted to flow in the text to all 14 of these grouped or anchored objects, say all top boxes, in one 'paste' instead of doing each one at a time but keeping the 3 elements you see togther at all times.

  • My anchored objects dont display after CS5 upgrade - help?

    Hi,
    We've just upgraded to CS5 from CS3.
I publish educational books, which contain a lot of object styles and anchored objects.
I have just opend a book im working on in CS5 and have had problems with both anchored objects not displaying and object styles changing. The first is more pressing.
The problem arises where I have an anchored object inside another anchored object, and they use custom positioning.
For example. I have a pullout box that contains text and an image. The image is anchored inside the pullout box and the pullout box is anchored to the main body of text.
The images are no longer displaying. I can select their frames, and if i change the image positioning to inline the images display fine, but when it is set to custom (which they need to be) I can no longer see the image.
Is anyone able to help with this, its a major problem as i am woking with hundreds of images here.
    Thanks

My usual advice is that with a project this large, it's best to finish it in the same version it was started in. Even a small change in the text engine can effect things like this and there were changes from CS3 to CS4 and again to CS5, but I'm not really sure what's happening in your case.

  • Help pls! CS4 freezing when editing

This issue has begun in the past couple weeks and I'm not sure why it's suddenly occurring:
Every time I try to edit a paragraph whose first line is indented to wrap around an anchored object (that is also text wrapped with a custom alignment to the text cap-height), the program freezes. It seems to be okay until I try to indent the line, or if the line is already indented, it is alright untilI make the anchored object have the custom alignment. I've tried copy/pasting the text I'm using into a non-rich-text editor and then copy/pasting it into InDesign, saving the file to inx or idml format, verifying and repairing preferences, reinstalling InDesign (which seemed to reset my preferences), building the file from scratch using the freshly installed InDesign as well as doing that with a new user account and I still run into problems. All fonts in my file have been verified to be without corruption and it does not seem to matter if the anchored object does not have any contents.
I'm not surewhat else I can do besides a clean wipe at this point so I'd be super grateful for a solution. Thanks!

    Well.
You appear to have run Sample Process in Activity Monitor with the wrong process selected -- you selected Activity Monitor rather than InDesign. I guess I gave bad instructions. But in any case, since you provided the INDD file, I was able to replicate the problem.

I'm not quite sure what BNCore is -- oh! Bullets and Numbering (core).
You seem to have defined a bunch of styles about bullets, though I don't actually see you using the bullets and numbering feature in InDesign. But I would mess around with your bullet settings (do you know where they are being invoked?) and see if you can find the source of the problem.

  • Anchored objects and first line in InDesign CS3

Hi, thanks for reading. I know that when you want an achored object at the beginning of a text block to all push away ("wrap around") the text, including the first line, you have to put it into a line before that.
What I don't like about it, is that I then have an empty first line and everything else is pushed one line down. Now I could move the whole textbox up, to fit to the rest of my layout, but that's not the way one should work in InDesign. Is there a way to get around the first line?

    T-
Select the anchored object and put text wrap on it. Then select the anchored object and go to Object/Anchored Object/Options. Select Position: Inline and set the Y Offset to the negative number that aligns your text where you want it.

  • Problem with anchored objects in file from CS4

I opened, in CS5, a file which was done in CS4 and discovered all my anchored objects were gone!
Analising the document, I understood they were there, but in a kind of mask ("Illustrator style") but in a text frame, which is odd, I think.
    I show here:
    1. one picture of the CS4 file
    2. one picture of the same file, but opened in CS5
    3. one picture of this file, in CS5, showing the "ghost" when I put the cursor over the "missing" anchored object
If I cut and paste the objects they appear, but if I put them back like anchored objects, they disapear again.
I had to fix every thing in a document I was working (it's a 124 pages document...) without anchored objects, just grouped them, because it was urgent (as always...) but I am reporting this because maybe people hadn't notice this and maybe there's a way to fix this.

It's very hard to tell what might be causing this without seeing the actual file. I looked around and found a CS4 file on my suystem with hundreds of anchored photos, and they show fine when I open in CS5.
My first impression is that this is ither a layer problem of some sort, or perhaps the objects have been set not to print and you have a preview mode enabled, but eh screen captures don't seem to support the latter.
What happens if you export the file to .idml in CS4 and open that in CS5?

  • Premiere CS4 freezing on startup menu, please help.

    Hi,
I installed Adobe Premiere CS4 not too long ago as part of Master Collection and all the other programs seem to work but Premiere doesn't.
Whenever I open Premiere CS4, the splash screen loads up and then I get that menu with New Project and Open Project buttons. That's when it freezes. The buttons don't work and whenever I click on them the menu flickers slightly and nothing happens. I tried closing some Adobe processes like acrotray and Import Process but that didn't help.Has this got something to do with Quicktime or something else? Please help, I need Premiere CS4 to work on my college assignments.

    I solved the problem!:)
I actually found it through the panel on the right for similar problems.
Apparently WindowBlinds 6 was the cause of the probelm and there was an option in it that I had to change.
    Now Premiere works.
