Help! Ants in my ibook!

Can somebody please tell me what to do when ants invade your ibook? Today I discovered black ants really love my clamshell. I was so angry. This is the first time I've experienced something like this and this is my second laptop! They were everywhere. On the screen and coming out of every port and air vents and even the keyboard! I think they may have fled the scene as they were crawling out to get away from the heat but still. I wonder if anymore are still in there and how do I find out? Do I take it to a repair center or send it to an apple technician? Do I remove the keyboard at my own risk and see if the little boogers are still in there? I don't see any more, but it's got me so paranoid I keep checking to see if any more are going to crawl out. Any suggestions would be useful! And I don't eat near it and I always wipe the keyboard off so I don't know what they were thinking! They better not have built a nest. It seems to be working fine.

Hello Indigo Queen and Welcome To Apple Discussions!
Well, this is not something I have ever heard of before. I had a huge wasp in my clamshell, building a nest on the USB port... but your problem sounds more serious. I would lift the keyboard up and see if any are visible.
I don't know what else to tell you. I may just see if any others crawl out or are visible, then I may suggest bringing it in somewhere for a cleaning.
Hope this helps, and I hope no more ants raid your clamshell!

  • I need help badly with my ibook and palm pilot

Good day. I recently fixed my ibook and my palm to sync with each other. I configured my palm to sync with entourage. I then realized that it would be much better that if I sync my palm pilot with the palm desktop. Gow do I now reverse this? How do i cancel entourage to sync with my pal pilot. please advise. need help badly on this. thanks... i just like to feep my files organized and i find it difficult using entourage...my palm pilot is a palm TX...

I also have a Palm handheld. I use iCal and Address Book more than Entourage. This is what I did:
At first, I tried to adapt to Palm Desktop. I didn't like it, so I looked for the *iSync Conduit*. I found it and installed it. Then, I ignored the Palm desktop software (except the HotSync utility) and have used iSync with iCal and Address Book since.
I know that doesn't answer the question about switching from Entourage, but Desktop isn't that great either. iSync is what I recommend.

  • Strangest screenshot ever. Please help decipher on my iBook G4 Mac 10.4.11

When I tried to install a new hard drive on my iBook G4, I got this crazy image. When I then tried to boot up from the 10.4 DVD, I got the same image. Please help me identify what the heck it is and why I'm getting it. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks. Randy

I had a similar occurrence recently when I booted from a G4 cloned drive on my G5, and I'd not had a Wireless mouse ever installed on either.
I think it happens when it doesn't find a USB Mouse or the ABD/USB Trackpad right off.
I think I fixed mine by unplugging/pluggin the USB Mouse, but there may have been other steps that I've forgotten.

  • Help - Is my G4 ibook dead?

I have a G4 12" ibook that stopped starting up. When I press the power switch, there is no "chime" sound and display remains blank (slight grey). Power to set is ok and when Caps Lock is applied, the LED will light up.
I have tried to reset the PMU and PARM but both did not help at all. Set is already out of warrenty, could it be a logic board failure?
If it is a hard disk failure, will it behave the same as what I am seeing?
    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The startup "chime" indicates that some low-level hardware tests have passed successfully. While the startup hardware test does check for an ATA bus (so there could be a hard drive), it doesn't actually check for a hard drive itself. So, no chime would not necessarily mean a bad hard drive. Certainly, if the logic board has failed, you won't get a chime. Have you put your Mac OS X install disk in the drive and tried to startup while holding down on the "c" key? If the problem was only your hard drive, you would still be able to do this. If your logic board has failed, this may not work. You might then want to run the Apple Hardware Test to see if you can even run that. You might then be able to give AppleCare Support some more detailed information about what has gone wrong. The prices for repair in Singapore are probably different from those in the US.

  • Help :( I think my ibook crashed!

I purchased my ibook g4 MAYBE in late April or early May. I didn't have any problems with it until earlier this month. My internet constantly started freezing, and a couple of days before it crashed, the finder would freeze when I clicked on it. I haven't dropped my ibook, kicked it, or anything else. I tried to take it to the apple store and the woman told me "Sorry, we can't do anything for you." She literally said that. I do NOT have the protection plan (and i'm wishing I did waste my money on it) but I know there's a 1-year warranty invovlved. I can't imagine why it would crash if I didn't do anything to it.
Oh, I don't know if it crashed completely, but I turn it on..and it gets to the load screen, where it says "Loading Mac OS X" and then freezes (even though it shows progress)
Needless to say, i'm incredibly p issed off because I can't find my apple reboot CD, and I don't even know if I for sure got one.
I am incredibly upset about this, so if somebody could help me, PLEASE DO SO.

it's hard to do much without system CD.
you can verify warranty by serial number at "About Your Support Coverage" (lower right):
    http://www.apple.com/support/
if you bought iBook from authorized dealer, 1 year warranty applies from the date of purchase.
if the issues is corrupted software, warranty may not be covering it (warranty covers parts failure)
all machines come with the system disks, if you bought it new it's supposed to have the disks.
without system CD you may want to try "single user mode" and running fsck command, it is possible that it could make things worse though if the drive is damaged.

  • Help with opening up iBook to replace HD

    Hi all,
I purchased an iBook G3 500/15GB/128MB (late 2001) on eBay a couple of months ago. Although I have an iMac I use as my main computer, I thought it worthwhile upgrading the HD & RAM of the iBook (as well as installing an AirPort card) just to make it a bit more useful. I could see that replacing the HD might be tricky, but as I already managed to replace the HD & RAM of my G3 iMac I thought this would not be too difficult with the right instructions.
Yesterday, I finally got around to beginning "the operation" with all my tools ready & both the PBFixIt.com guide & the Apple service manual open on my iMac. I have managed to remove the lower case without too much drama, but I am now stuck on the screws on the upper case. They all seem to be so tightly screwed in! - well most of them, I managed to remove about 4 so far. I keep trying them from time to time whenever I am home, with no luck.
Can some of you more seasoned iBook upgraders/repairers give me some tips? Even just suggestions for good screwdrivers, if that seemed to make a difference... Having got this far I'd hate to give up now...
    Thanks in advance!
    iBook G3 500 (Late 2001)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thanks to both of you for your encouragement. Ronda guessed right, I was using a rather cheap'n'nasty #0 screwdriver plus a $2 set of precision tools. I paid a visit to a more specialised electronics store this afternoon & invested in an insulated screwdriver (I don't need the 1000 volts protection, but the rubber handle was a lot easier to grip) and also "Screwdriver Helper", a liquid that looks like drops of a nail file and apparently helps to increase the torque of screwdrivers.
Armed with my new tools I was able to get off one nasty screw that had frustrated me for about an hour in just a few seconds... and so on with most of the others. Despite all this, I actually managed to grind out the head of one of the crucial screws on the top case, under the keyboard, and it looked like there was nothing I could do to get it out... :-/
If you are faint-hearted when it comes to opening up computers you might not want to read further...
I could prise up enough of the corner of the top case & shield to see where the hard drive was. So, I managed to unscrew & untape the shield in that corner & lift out & unplug the HD with the top case precariously pried up. What can I say, I'm stubborn & I hate getting other people in to fix something I feel I should be able to do myself. Anyway, to my surprise I was able to slide in the old HD & plug in the new one with less difficulty than I expected (but it would have been much, much easier if I'd had the whole top case off entirely instead of having to prise it open.)
I put it all back together a lot easier than getting it apart, thanks to keeping my screws organised. I think I may have to have another go at getting the bottom case on better - I couldn't get the two long torx screws under the feet to go back in straight, so I left them off, and it's slightly out of alignment with the top case round the back where the display hinge is. But it's late & I really wanted to see whether the whole thing was still actually working or not...
I was very anxious when I plugged in the power cable & pressed the power button! But pleasantly surprised when the iBook booted from the external firewire HD with no problems, & once I logged in Finder complained that it couldn't recognise the 74.5 GB disk I'd "inserted" - the new HD.
Of course, time will tell whether or not I was completely successful. But right now Carbon Copy Cloner is copying all my old HD's contents over with no apparent problems...

  • Help me with this iBook!!!! Please.

    Hi everyone,
I am new to Apple Discussions and am having a issue ; I received a iBook notebook with running 10.1.5 ; I noticed Internet Explorer ( not safari ) which after reading up on, apparently was stopped as of 2005. I looked when the last update was completed on this iBook and it was 2004/2005.
There are a few things I wish to do; but am running into issues.
1- I want to reset back to how it 'once' was.  Issue with this is I do not have any disks for it. I only recieved it with usb mouse/tv adapter/wall plug. So no 'boot' disk. I heard there are ways around this ( considering the iBooks age ) vs. how it was before.
2- I wish to update all software/hardware to as new as possible. Issue with this is ; it's my first Mac OS. So honestly I have no idea how or what to do.
3- find where in the system I can find out all of this iBooks information ( which is OS it runs, what the ram is, what the hdd space is; basically all the specs )
I know this Mac has a lot of history.  I just hope someone can come to my rescue.
I will be completely honest ; please use as "dummified" language as possible.  I am no good with computers.  I have always been a pc fan ( except I love my iPhone ).
Anything anyone can do would be most helpful.  I know with this being a older device not all the data is easily found.  I am willing to download a install disk to a USB drive if needed.
Since I directly can't find the specs for this iBook I did find the -easily found- 'about this Mac' and it is the following :
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.1.5
    Memory 256 MB
    Processor PowerPC G3
    Apple computer inc. 1983-2001
    If that helps at all.
    Thanks,
    Justin - Poser Punx

    Hi Justin,
1- I want to reset back to how it 'once' was.  Issue with this is I do not have any disks for it. ... So no 'boot' disk.
That's a show stopper right there.
You can revert an iBook to its originally shipped condition without its original installation discs, but to do so would require another boot device containing its original installation disc image. Apple may be able to sell you a copy but may not give you the time of day without paying a modest fee for technical support. Given these challenges I don't recommend even attempting to revert that Mac to its originally shipped condition.
It's a shame to dishonor its tenth anniversary with this comment, but OS X 10.1.5 is, frankly, horrible. You ought to be able to upgrade it to Tiger, and original Tiger discs are available on the used market. They are not cheap. You will need the retail version which is distinguished with a big X on a black background - grey discs are machine-specific and will not work.
The earliest iBooks can only be upgraded to Panther.
Your first task is to identify the exact hardware model. Click the  menu and select "About this Mac..." or words to that effect. There may be a "More Info..." button in that window. If there is click it and see if you can find out there. I don't recall what its nomenclature was with OS X 10.1. I've been trying to suppress those memories.

  • PLEASE HELP - Hard Disk for iBook G4

This ibook g4 1.33ghz, mid 2005, abit different from the earlier batch.
I took it to service centre for repairs, and logic board is spoilt so they extracted the HDD for me. I found recently about the fix of logic board. So, I decided to give it a try.
When opened up, I realised that it is abit different from those posted online. The HDD does not have a latch and I could not push it into the connected at all.
Is it supposed to be tighted by the screws on the side and that's it?
Tried to search online but seems like the HDD slot is different.
Can anyone please help me on this??
    Thank you!

I found this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464, which is very helpful, but only for 10.3. Is there any similar article for 10.4???????????????

  • HELP WITH TRANSFER FROM IBOOK G4 TO NEW INTEL MAC

    HI
I just got a new intel mac and want to transfer all my stuff from my ibook G4 ... I tried the migration assistant, I plugged in the fire wire and turned on my ibook whilst pressing the T down. I get the firewire icon on my old machine but the new one still says 'waiting for old machine to restart' It just wont do anything when it gets to that point.
I dont think I'm doing anything wrong but the thing is gettting me aggravated to say the least.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Karen can't help there but wanted to warn you.
I did the same thing--iBook G4 to intel iMac, did a "transfer all my stuff" and had problems. At least one G4 program caused my iMac to crash at start-up (it was a special anti-virus program). Also some messy things like the iMac though it was on a wireless network after the copy (like my iBook was) when it was, in fact, on a wired internet connection (it still worked but I got errors in the console log). Just messy.
Once you get your problem sorted out I'd be careful about which programs I transfered over.

  • Help me! My iBook Wont Start

    Help!
First off, I am running OS X 10.4.9
Last night I was messing with widgets, and found a widget that turns off you computer from the screen. I downloaded it and wanted to test it. I pushed the restart button. Once it Restarted it would get to the apple screen and then freeze. No spinning gear. I reset the PRAM and the PMU. I then tried to do the safe mode boot. No dice. I then backed up all my files onto my external HD via the OS X Install disc 1. I tried reinstalling OS X. Still no dice. Should i try completly Wiping the HD? then reinstalling it?
Also, I just got my iBook repaired a few days ago, The DC adapter was screwed over. Is there any repair warrenty thing incase they got something in the HD that is causing it to not boot.
Oh and by the way, when I tried to boot into safe mode, I saw a Non sign Like as in no smoking that sign.
    Thanks, Dan

Problem solved, I wrote Zeroes on the HD. Reinstalled OS X.

  • Help, Installing Leopard On iBook G4

Hello, I am currently running a 12" iBook G4 on tiger 10.4.11. It has 1.25GB if ram and it had i think 1GHz processor speed but, i used the program leopard assist and it now thinks it has 867MHz of processor.
I have the leopard install disks. I click the restart button on the Mac OS X install disk, and then it restarts it's self and then loads up the language choice, i choose English. Next thing that comes up is the message " This software cannot be installed on this computer." Then it gives my a choice of restarting or cancelling.
I cannot understand why it doesn't work as I am over all the requirements.
Any thoughts would be helpful and any guides or tips well be appreciated.
    Many Thanks.

As I understand it, Leopard Assist writes a file named "boot.txt" to the root directory of the hard disk which at boot time configures Open Firmware to report the CPU speed as 867 MHz, then hands off booting to the installer disc.
Assuming that the presence of this file is the cause of your problem (which is not at all a certainty), you can try removing it & resetting NVRAM. If you don't know how to do those things, we can provide help for that, but first please answer the question about the kind of Leopard install disc you have.
It is more likely that the message you see is the result of using a grey, model-specific disc, which as already mentioned will not work with your iBook.

  • Need help starting very troubled iBook

About a week ago I started having problems starting my iBook (it would get stuck on the Apple screen), and the few times I could get it to start up, it would lock up soon after. So I've already decided the end is near for it and I've upgraded to a MacBook.
However, I'd like to get on my iBook at least one last time to deuathorize a few programs and grab a few files. But now it's even worse than last week. Instead of getting stuck on the Apple screen, it just shuts down. I started it from a Techtool Pro CD, however that's got its own set of problems (probably part of a different discussion, but for whatever it's worth, it runs into problems with the SMART drive and surface scan, although it won't let me run any of the repair functions).
Anyway, now I want to run Disk Utility and see if that fares any better, but I can't figure out how to eject the Techtool Pro disk. I tried holding down the mouse button while restarting, but the computer shuts down before it gets a chance to eject. I also tried reseting the PRAM, but again it just shuts down shortly after the third chime. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try starting in Open Firmware and ejecting the diasc.
    1. Restart the computer.
    2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold the key combination Command-Option-O-F.
Note: The Command key has the Apple and () icons on it.
    3. Release the keys when you see a white screen that says "Welcome to Open Firmware."
    4. At the prompt, type: eject cd
    5. Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject any disc that is present, and "ok" appears behind your command when the action is complete.
    6. Type: mac-boot
    7. Press Return.
Your computer should now start up normally.
