HELP! Aperture corrupting my library when relocating masters

I keep my aperture library on my system disk, and I use referenced masters on a NAS.  Everything seems to have been working fine until now.  I had a rather large project that I was cleaning up, wanting to delete my no longer needed masters (about 2200 out of 3500 files).  Unfortunately, I forgot to check the box to delete referenced masters - I didn't even realize it was there until I went searching when it didn't delete them.  Anyway, what I thought I would do is simply relocate the masters from by project to a new project, then I could delete the masters left behind.
What happened was that Aperture started moving masters from other projects into the new project - Files that were not selected in Aperture when I executed the relocate masters command.  Now these other projects have lots of images with "unsupported image format", I'm assuming for the masters that got moved into this new project.  What happened?

I've attempted to fix this by restoring the JPEG files that I had originally "removed".  This did not seem to  resolve the problem as when exporting the masters I still find many, many files from other projects being exported as part of this project.
Granted, I brought this problem on myself by deleting the JPEGs, however this seems like a pretty serious defect in Aperture.  I could understand if after deleting a JPEG Aperture could not locate the JPEG master and displayed some sort of indicator of such.  However there is no indication that anything is wrong, it's just picking up random files in place of the JPEGs, and in those other projects, the images are "unsupported file format" with the filename showing some sort of metadata in an iPhoto library on the same disk.
I have a vault that probably has the database from these other projects intact.  Is there a way to restore that information?  (remember that all the masters are relocated).
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer to help fix this.

  • Setting version name when relocating masters

During the initial phase of moving to Aperture, I have changed my image library structure a bit as I learn how to manage it.
I made one more change and went to relocate the masters, which worked great except for one thing: it relocated the masters, but did not update the version names to reflect the new location.
I like my version name base and file name to be the same, at least to start out.
Is there any way from the relocate operation to do this?
Or do I have to export and re-import to get version names reset?

  • How to recover a corrupt iPhoto library when iPhoto cannot rebuild it?

Soon after upgrading to Yosemite, I've downloaded and installed iPhoto 9.6. Upon opening, iPhoto requested to upgrade the photo library, which I allowed. It got stuck at around 25% along the way, and I left it working on that overnight. The next day, it was stuck at the same point. I force-quitted the application and reopened it, tried to upgrade the library again, but this time the application crashed. When I reopened it, I found that 'permissions needed to be repaired'. So I did, and iPhoto crashed – now whenever iPhoto opens and tries to examine the library, it crashes. I tried repairing permissions again, rebuilding the database and all, to no avail.
It seems that the only solution will be to manually import all tenths of thousands of photos, modified and original. Would anyone be able to shed some light on the issue and maybe recommend a better way? Thanks!

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Aperture not exporting metadata when exporting masters

It says here (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302943) that "by Design" Apple doesn't allow you to embed the metadata into an exported master file. Any idea why this is 'by design'? It doesn't make sense.
Their 'work around' is to double your work by exporting masters (with no metadata) and then exporting versions (say, as JPEGs with metadata) and keep both files together.
I am trying to archive copies of Masters along with their metadata and want to avoid duplicating work that is grossly inefficient.

Well, DNG export could really be the option for
people who require raw + added metadata in one file.
There's another thing that interested me _soooo_
much in your reply% it's about connection between raw
files and editorial. I don't shoot for magazines yet
(though I will be soon enough ))) ) but I'm surprised
clients require raw. Or it is your preferrable way of
    giving your work out?
As a PE, I require RAW files, as 9.9 times out of 10 my color house is going to be better than the photographer at preparing the image for print. This is the same for most of the higher quality publications out there.

  • Aperture hangs upon Relocating Masters

I'm trying to relocate my masters to an external drive.
First time I tried it it started working then hung on one photo (untitled-1, or something generic like that).
I Force quit Aperature then thought it was because Iphoto was open, so I closed it.
I tried it again (relocate masters) and the progress bar doesn't even stop and it says Aperture is not responding.
So, what do I do now? Does Relocating Masters MOVE them, deleting them from their original location? If you do it twice will it just try to move what it hasn't already?
I have a time machine backup from yesterday, but would like advice on how to proceed now. ugh!

When you imported your images from iPhoto how did you do it? Try to be as exact as possible.
If you used the *File->Import->iPhoto Library* there were 3 choices:
    # Leave masters in iPhoto library
    # put masters into Aperture library
    # put masters somewhere else on your HD
Cases 1 & 3 would make referenced masters, case 2 would make the masters managed. In cases 2 & 3 the files are copied out of the iPhoto library. In case 1 the masters stayed in the iPhoto library.
Assuming that after you did the import you didn't do anything like delete the iPhoto library then the iPhoto library should be as it was before you did the import into Aperture.
You could create a new empty Aperture library and do the import from iPhoto again starting from scratch with the added bonus of your increased knowledge of the whole process. When I first got Aperture I imported by iPhoto library numerous times trying out different scenarios each time until I got it the way I wanted it.
If you have any other questions post back, good luck.

  • Help removing a corrupt Iphoto library

    Hi All
I am posting this here as i don't think its a iPhoto specific issue, rather a corrupt file issue
I was hoping some one can provide wisdom in removing a corrupt iPhoto Library
The file suggests it is 500Gig in size, and no matter what i try i can't delete it
    What i have tried
Deleting it through the trash can - system just hangs
Deleting using OmniDiskSweeper, using this app it suggests the file size is 11Gig, but when you ask it to trash it again just hangs
Running disk verify and repair to see if that would resolve the problem
Repair the file by holding down Command and Option while opening in iPhoto - it brought up an error message and would not let me proceed
I have even tried deleting using Terminal with no success, however in saying that i am a beginner using this launguage
At the moment my Mac thinks its occupying 50% of my hard drive space, i know it not that size, but i am at my wits end
I would be grateful if any one could help me solve this problem
Note i am running the latest software, and i no longer require this file

    Hi TD,
Thank you for the quick reply, very helpful. Now I can sleep in peace and without worry.  I had transferred 30.000 pictures and was a little worried.
    Kind regards,

  • Terrance Devlin answered a question about iPhoto (4-2012) re:copying iPhoto Library to an ExHD, and losing all the albums. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button. Can anyone help?

I tried to move my images (over 25,000) to an External Hard drive to open up some memory, hoping to make my computer run faster. It took three hours to move the images and I see them all in the mac's menus. However when I try to open them with iPhoto now, none appeared. and when I tried to import them back to the main HD they come in to iPhoto just fine, but not with the albums nor any of the massive organization i'd created in the original. this represents years of images, and I can't imagine that I'd have to recopy them into folders/albums again.
Terrance Devlin answered a similar question back in April of last year. He said to make sure the ExHD is formatted to MAC OS Extended (Journaled) and to move the library to the ExHD and then open iPhoto with the option button and select "Choose Library" from the resulting menu.
Command "I" tells me that the new drive is formatted correctly. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button.
First, I wondered if the application needs to be on the same drive as the Library. I sure would like to know if I can find out how to restore all the folders I had them in. Terrance's advice helped the user that had asked the question.

Can anyone help? I'm using iPhoto 5. My MAC is an OS X version 10.4.11.

    Here are Apple's instructions:
If you are using iPhoto ’06 or earlier, you will need to follow these steps to tell iPhoto where the Library is now located:
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto Library.
    Click Choose Library.
Locate and select the iPhoto Library in its new location.
    (from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229 )
Below (in the link below) is what you should see when holding down the option key and opening iPhoto. Keep holding down the option key until this dialogue comes up. You want to select the Choose Library button.

  • Lost photos! aaaggh! (iPhoto 08). I disconnected my HDD temporarily when relocating.I synced my iphone and iPhoto it seems has rebuilt the library from the old copy

I have two ext HDD intended to ensure I don't lose my photos( iPhoto 08). I disconnected my HDD temporarily when relocating.
I then synced my iphone and iPhoto it seems has rebuilt the library from the old copy of the library (2011. I have Time Machine but I can't restore the last 3y photos as I guess Time machine does not back up the other HDD.
Any chance of finding my treasured photos somebody?

Sounds like you have another iPhoto library someplace - under no conditions would iPhoto revert a library to an older one - you just need to find and open the correct one
Depress and hold the option key, launch iPhoto and use the resulting select library to look st the libraries you have

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

  • Please Help - Screen corruption while in Aperture - graphics card problem?

Over the past few weeks, I have noticed frequent screen corruption within the confines of the image that I am currently editing. The corruption only occurs when in Aperture. The corruption occurs as multiple thin (one pixel?) horizontal lines of random color and random length that occur in random locations within the image. If I force a re-calculation of the image (such as change white balance) the random lines will disappear, only to reappear somewhere else. The actual image (after export) is never corrupted, only the display. Recently Aperture has started to "hang" in random ways, sometimes freezing the whole machine, sometimes crashing, sometimes beach-balling.
This sounds like a hardware problem to me, but the standard Apple hardware test runs without errors, as does an extended memtest. Setup: Mac Pro, 5GB, SW fully updated to 10.4.11 and Aperture 1.5.6. I tried re-seating the graphics board to no avail.
Are there any programs that I can use to test the Radeon X1900 card?
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks David,
I did some more research and it appears that quite a few of us (unlucky) users with an early version of the Radeon X1900 graphics card are now seeing failures that appear to be due to poor heat dissipation by the graphics card. There's a huge thread on the subject here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195969
The problem with random display glitches doesn't show up for most people until they upgrade to Leopard, which puts a larger strain on the graphics card than Tiger. I am still running Tiger, but the glitches show up for me when using Aperture, which of course uses the graphics card more aggressively than most other programs. I assume that Aperture increases the heat which causes the glitches.
I tried cleaning the dust out of the Radeon's heat sink, and I added a tool (smcFanControl) that lets me manually override the default fan speed. By keeping the card's temperature lower, the glitches have gone away. If I let the temperature rise, they come back. Looks like I'll be needed a new graphics card.

  • Aperture 3.3.1 frequently "Updating Library" when I quit Aperture

Since I've upgraded to Aperture 3.3 (now 3.3.1), Aperture frequently (almost 100%) spends time "Updating Library" when I quit Aperture.  This takes like 40 mins to do.  I've fixed permissions and repaired the library but no difference.
Does anyone else have this problem?  I was hoping 3.3.1 would fix this problem but it doesn't.  Next plan would be to rebuild the library but that will take a long time!
    Jason

Sadly, you are on the cutting edge of the deployment of Aperture 3.3.x (along with many other posters here).  The answer to your unasked questions -- "What is going on, and how can I fix it?" -- is "We don't know yet".  Since you have upgraded to 3.3.1, and have let Aperture more than once run through whatever it is doing when it says "Updating Library" and it continues to update the Library for 40 minutes every time you close the Library, I advise you to go ahead with rebuilding the database.  IME, this rarely takes longer than 10 hours, and can be run overnight.
I have rebuilt Libraries many times and have never seen a Library damaged by the rebuild.  Nevertheless, you should have a complete and verified back-up before doing any maintenance on any Library.
Let us know what you do, and what the result is.  Thanks.

  • The hard drive on my MacBookPro crashed.  The Apple store replaced it.  Since then I can't open iphoto.  It asks to rebuild library; when I click yes, I get: "Aperture cannot access this library; reset permissions." I don't own Aperture!

The hard drive on my MacBookPro recently crashed.  The Apple store replaced it.  Since then I can't open iphoto.  It asks to rebuild library; when I click yes, I get: "Aperture cannot access this library; reset permissions." I don't own Aperture!  Any thoughts on how I can rebuild the iphoto library?  Currently I can't even get into it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
