Help at the apple store?

If you have a Dell and you have given up on these postings, don't bother going to the apple store. I brought my ipod in, they hooked it up to their apple computer, downloaded a song, and said nothing was wrong with it. When I asked them to try it using MY computer (which I brought minus the monitor) the first apple employee told me they did not have a monitor. A second worker, however, provided me with a monitor. After a smart comment to the effect that they would not troubleshoot my Dell computer, I was left on my own. When I told them that the ipod was STILL not being recognized, I was ignored. One employee told me it was the fault of my computer as I was packing my things but I informed the worker that the same computer had previously supported a nano with no problem. As I was on the elevator leaving the mall someone noticed my Dell and asked me why I had the tower. When I told the lady that my ipod did not work on the Dell she replied that she had heard about the problem but was still considering getting her husband an ipod even though they had a Dell. After I finished my story I can say that her husband won't be coming to this site for support. If you don't have an apple computer, the ipod is a terrible product with pathetic support. Of course, you may already know that.

Nope, commute would be much to far for me.
But to get back to the topic, this is no different than any other device manufacturers. I hear stories all the time that someone can not get their Epson printer, Western Digital External Hard drive, Logitech Mouse, Lexar card reader, Sony Digital Camera, etc. device to work on their Mac, Dell, Compact, HP, etc. and when they go to that device manufacturer the usual result is that the problem must be with the computer or operating system, neither of which the device manufacturer supports. You then go to Dell, Apple, Microsoft, etc. and they in turn tell you it must be the device, not their system/hardware/OS. So you get both sides pointing at the other.
Unfortunately this is just the way it is and it isn't unique to Apple. But you also can not expect Apple to learn every piece of hardware and software out there, especially on a non-Apple system to help you trouble shoot the problem. As you stated, they hooked it up to a Mac and the iPod worked fine, thus verifying the problem is not the iPod but something wrong with your system, a Dell running Microsoft operating system. This is no different than if you went to Microsoft with your working iPod and told them that the operating system won't see the device. They are not going to help you either and just tell you it must be the iPod or iTunes..
But back to your problem. I see you never bothered to ask here for help and it would appear from one of your posts that the iPod was indeed seen by your system and iTunes at one point. So what changed? What does it do now when you hook it up? Does the Dell see it but not iTunes? Or is it not seen even by the operating system? When plugged in do you get charging power to it? Do other USB devices work OK on the SAME USB connector?
Perhaps if you posted more information on your problem, asked questions, and told what you have already tried, many of us would be happy to try and assist you in diagnosing the problem. If instead, you want to just complain and whine, take it somewhere else.

I want to replace the HDD with SSD in my late 2011 Macbook pro, the question is I dont tools and knowledge about this job. So I am wondering if i can seek help from local Apple store?

Good choice! I have one installed in my 13" MBP. The installation is not too difficult, but it is not trivial. I'm pretty experienced with this stuff so just take your time and carefully follow the instructions. You'll be working with tiny little screws that are easy to drop and/or lose. I suggest using magnetic tipped tools. There are a couple of screws in some tight areas that are a little difficult to remove.
Be particularly careful to check all the snap-on cablings when you reassemble. There is one you don't remove during installation that is near the top part of the optical drive and covered over. When I was tugging on the drive to remove it I apparently popped the cable under the cover. Turned out it was for the WiFi and BT. I had to disassemble the back cover and look hard for something I couldn't see. I just happened to press on the covered area where the cable connected and heard the snap of it reconnecting. If it weren't for that I would have never figured out why my WiFi and BT stopped working!

  • I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work. Help?

I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work.
^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
One thing is the memory, and another thing is the hard disk space. You are telling me that you have 200 GB of free space on the hard disk, but the App Store is telling you that you have to install 2 GB of memory or more on your Mac if you want to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
First of all, open  > About this Mac > More Info, and copy "Model Identifier" here, so we can know what Mac you have got and how much memory you can install.
We recommend to buy the memory in OWC or Crucial (Crucial is cheaper and offers the same compatibility warranty as OWC) because you won't probably have any problem with the memory you buy there

  • I have an iPhone 4 and I had to get a new one due to a defect with my old one and I left the apple store's wifi before iCloud was done restoring unknowingly. So it is still stuck in a restore? Help please?

I left the apple store fast due to the fact i was in a bad car accudent and i am in a wheelchair and cant stay seated like that long due to a broken leg. It randomly will pop up message saying something like it needs wifi but I have wifi at my house. It also pops up another message something like it needs to finish restoring it and asks if I want to download it all and I click on it it to but it goes away after that and nothing pops back up. I also can't install the new update it says I have I finish the retire then do it. My photo album is also stuck at whatever number of photos I have taken in the new phone that number of 300 something. It just says its downloading it. I have no clue what to do. Also my iCloud backup I looked and it says I have 2.2 gb left then that the  backup is 2.7 gb. I'm very confused what options I have and can't find an answer anywhere please help me!

Need to Resume download to complete the ongoing Process.
Last Resort, put the iPhone in DFU mode (Google How to do that). Connect in iTunes. Follow on-screen prompts to Restore. All Data would be lost, if not backed up earlier.
To save the photographs you may have to use third party software. Google is your friend.

  • This is my first time to ask a question, but my iPod touch 4G is not letting me restore and my i have taken it to the apple store and THEY could restore it but then after it shuts off and I can't restore it. Can anyone help me?

Hi, umm so anyways my ipod is about 2 years old now and i think the reason why it started to malfunction in the first place was because i had too much stuff on my ipod, apps, movies, and junk. But now i took it to the apple store and they were able to restore my ipod but when i go home it goes bad again and i try ot restore it on my laptop and it says it can't restore it. (11) and another thing is that when i try to turn my ipod on, it turns on to the apple logo then all of a sudden theres suppose to be the unlock screen but instead a black screen with a tiny loading sign in the middle and it keeps buffering and it never turns on. and then it shuts off with a white screen and then does the same exact thing for like 10 minutes. please help me. I dont know what to do. and my dad will be very ****** if it cant be helped..D:

  • I have lines going on my screen, when i went into the apple store the guy at the genius bar was clueless as to the problem. i havent dropped it. help?

hello, i have a line growing on my screen that is getting worse. it looks like a centipede. i have been to the apple store and the guy i spoke to had no idea what was causing it. the phone still works but i am concerned that it is getting bigger. any help?

OK. so it's not dead pixels.  How old is the phone? (some carriers will allow an upgrade more frequently than once a year... if it's less than a year old, the genius should have just replaced it for you, so I'm guessing it's not under warranty any more. I know the out of warranty price for an iPhone 4 is $199. Don't know if that applies to the 3Gs as well off hand.
A quick google search looks like you can get the parts and replace the display assembly or have it repaired for you (which I would think would be the smarter option) for between $50 and $100.
I know NOTHING about the company this link leads to, but the price seems reasonable... Do your homework first. If it gets to the point where it's unacceptable to you, I'd check into it. http://www.iphone3gscreenrepair.com/product_info.php?products_id=108

Glad 7.7.1 worked for you, I updated itunes on my macbook, and every time i try to sync the music to my ipod classic, it goes for 23 songs and then it freezes and I get "Cannot read or write to this disk", and it ejects it. I tried uninstalling itunes, reinstalling an earlier version (7.6.2) same problem, plus a new issue with itunes. (It was a clean uninstall, btw, I got everything cleaned out, I think, lol). Video's transfer fine. And no good way to get ahold of apple. That's great. If I have no music on my ipod, it's useless. Think they'll give me my money back? (lol)

    Hi please help.
I have a iPad 2 , not jail broken, just 2 months old fresh from the apple store. Recently I have been directed to **** sites or a fake bad oink **** application, through various applications. From google chrome app, the photon app and safari.
I always delete cookies and cache on exit. I use photon and puffin to watch flash player videos on tv series site with links such as put locker. I heard that there is no virus for the iPad but Trojans do exist.
Pleae help, at first this was just happening with photon app now in 3 different apps, and it is directing me always to the same **** site. I don't watch **** so it's. it from cookies or whatever and my iPad has been randomly turning off and also the videos are working really badly now. Also there is a message red alert staying untrusted site and hacker may be intercepting your device. What is going on? Please help
Is their a new redirecting Trojan or virus for iPad 2. ? If yes how can I remove it and will it cause permanent damage to my device? How could I have got this virus and in 3 apps. I'm also, worried as I use my iPad to buy things online etc with my credit card. What shall I do?.. Do I restore my device? How do I do that as I cannot connect to iTunes as I do not have a computer, just my iPad. Any help appreciated thanks.

They broke a story on sept 4, 2012 titled "apple's iOS, the new favorite malware victims"
Despite the dramatic title of the article, the only mention of iOS in the body was this:
Even though malware is increasing in iOS, it still remains relatively low compared with other operating systems.
And, it provides no examples or other documentation. And, unlike you, I don't consider CNET "the most legit tech site on the internet". I find them to be generally biased in their reiviews and heavily influenced by advertisers.
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2012/06/26/yes-apples-machines-really-ca n-get-viruses
The Forbes article descibes issues with the Mac OS, of which there always have been some, though certainly far fewer than there have been on the Windows platform. It goes on to speculate :
All those iPads, iPods and iPhones? Is this going to be a juicy enough target for the virus and trojan writers to at least attempt to attack, even given the difficulty of doing so?
Again, the Forbes article doesn't mention any current viruses, trojans or malware that exist which will affect an unjailbroken iOS device.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/15/iphone-malware-kaspersky_n_1515074.html
And, the HuffPo article quotes Grebennikov thusly:
"Our experience tells us that in the near future, perhaps in a year or so, we will see the first malware targeting iOS," Nikolai Grebennikov, Kaspersky's chief technology officer, told Computing.
Again, even Kaspersky doesn't say such things exist now, merely that they might.
Speculation about what might happen in the future or articles focusing on the Mac OS or Android are not terribly relevant. So, if you do have any other citiations, preferably from a source that doesn't derive most of is revenue from the companies it reviews, that document a virus or trojan that affects an unjailbroken iOS device, I would be interested. I have not been able to find any. I thought, perhaps, as a professional, you might know of some.
    Thank you.
