HELP! Audio Drops Out When Trying to Capture Canon XL2 Footage

Please help me out here. I'm a freelance camera operator w/ a Canon XL2 and several times now I've gotten calls from the editors saying they're having problems logging my footage, mainly the audio drops out quite a bit, and I'm not talking bout one second for every 2 or 3 minutes. No. It's like every 10 seconds the audio drops in and out.
What's the deal? Two times the guy was using a Panasonic DVX-100A to capture, another time it was a SONY DSR mini-DV deck. With each incident I had to go over with my XL2 and use it as the capture device, which is a pain.
The program they're using is FCP HD or 5. But I think even when they just play the tape in their Sony or Pany cameras, the audio may still suck.
Help me out here, I can't be the only one with this problem.
Thanks.

Well Robert Swanson, I hope my post wasn't taken offensively, it certainly wasn't meant as such. The only Canon camcorder I owned was the GL1. After switching to Sony's I can honestly say it would take something significant to go back. And, I was merely relating my experiences in trying to capture from other Canon camcorders so that I know where you are coming from. However, I am interested in the HVX being the "noisest" camera on the market. I am seriously considering this camera and would be interested in a review that points this out. I would be using the hard drive recorder instead of P2 cards.

  • ADSL Broadband keeps dropping out when trying to u...

Hi, hope someone can offer some advice please.
Our connection seems to have got a lot slower over the last few months (about 2.64 on a very good day) and now keeps dropping out when trying to use either the laptop or PS3. I have followed the advice on the self help guide and tried changing the ADSL filter, moved the hub away from the telephone, re-booting the hub and tried using it directly in the test socket and none of these have solved the problem. I have done a line test from work and it says there are no problems with the line??? I am getting really annoyed as we only have the phone line so we can use the internet so are paying over £40 a month for service we cant even use. I get the impression that as there are so many users on ADSL where I live (we dont have fibre optic yet) that it is too much for the exchange and that BT are upping peoples connections when they complain thus making other peoples worse (we had this problem about a year ago and complained and it was ok for a while)
Could this be true? Or am I just thinking too much in to it? And does anyone have any suggestions on how I could resolve the problem? I have had a bad experiance with being charged for an engineers visit in the past (eventually refunded) so would like to avoid having to get them involved if possible.
    Thanks in advance.

you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) http://speedtester.bt.com or http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9354/c/346,4740,5520 and post the results .
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Why does audio drop out when scrubbing iMovie events?

Why. does audio drop out when scrubbing iMovie events?

If the audio returns if you slow down scrubbing you are probably just scrubbing too quickly.

  • Audio drops out when scrolling playlists after upgrading new version of 9.2

    Hi Folks,
Has anyone noticed an issue when scrolling the playlists in Itunes now that the audio drops out for a second.
I use an external USB audio device by Native Instruments called the Audio Kontrol 1.
I have watched the processes on my PC and when I scroll up and down on the playlist. Something spikes causing audio to not play for a second.
I am hoping to fix this somehow as I do not want to roll back (not even sure if you can). I also have heard with dual core processors that occasionally audio can get stopped as other processes take over where in single core processors everything cued up (any truth to that).
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much X & Paul, for your suggestions. Although they didn't solve the problem, they kept me hopeful enough to continue my quest for an answer. After exhausting all effort to find the problem in the audio, I decided to focus on the video. So, I tried correcting the excess luma on the consolidated QT movie, and suddenly the problem was fixed. Because of the different levels of correction I'd need for each and every cut in the original sequence, and the precious time it would take, I'd planned to save it for the color correction stage, a mere 2 weeks away. I remembered how illegal white would often cause the image on some monitors, specifically consumer TVs, to waver for a second. But this was happening all the way back to the DV deck's audio meter, so I never expected it to be a luma issue.
I assume that the outdating capacity of my G4 played a part, but I wanted to write back with my thanks, and to impart my illuminated wisdom to the next perplexed soul.
    Thanks again,

  • Audio drops out when following video to external monitor

When I play a sequence to an external monitor, the audio drops out for 2 to 3 seconds after changes on the video track, and then pops back in with no interuption in video output. It doesn't happen at every cut, but it's consistent in the places it does. I thought it might be caused by the size the project has become. So I exported the sequence as a quicktime file, closed the lage project, opened a new one and exported the new file and played it and it happened again, even though there were no edits. It doesn't occur at all when I turn off external video, and play it on the computer. I connected a new firewire from the computer to my DV deck, restarted the computer, but it keeps happening.
Is it that the dramatic change in color, light and compostion crowding out the audios ability to follow the video through the wire?
I'm completely stumped. The next step will be to open the computer and try to blow any excess dust out. I do this periodically anyway, and my last time was two months ago, so I'd be surprised if it works.
Maybe the G4 with 2G processing power can no longer handle the program, but it shows no sign of stuggle in any other way.
My clients are starting to grow restless.

  • Audio Drop out when editing in Waveform / No Multi track File

Ok so i have a bigger problem. Therefore thats why i am reposting.
I have a 40 minutes video and the last scene needs alot of audio editing. I am trying to export the 8 minute scene to a Multi Track project for soundtrack pro. When i click send to multi track project, i click "Include background video" however when i click save, it exports then gives me the error "Error Sending Selection to Soundtrack Pro" however when I uncheck the "include background video" i am able to open up soundtrack pro and see all the audio tracks but the video is absent.
Its just the multi track that i am unable to do. I am able to export as a Audio File Project and still the video. However when i try to do nosie reduction the audio plays for a few seconds then stops.

    Hi Luis,
    Thank you for that.
Seems like you have a point about the "hardware" issue.  I'm unsure (new to it all) at what data rate my (er...wonderful) fusion drive provides FCPX for smooth playback - or where I can find that info on the iMac.  Playing back movies in the 422 HQ codec seems to have no issues (when I converted the movie from 4444 HQ).
But playing the full 4444 HQ, the picture is smooth, but the audio has these drop-outs - even with "best performance" option ticked. Interesting that the audio suffers, not the picture in FCPX - so not sure what's going on there. I also read - perhaps - that to play a smooth ProRes 4444 HQ movie in FCPX the data rate should be min of 500 Mbs (based upon About Apple ProRes) for HD movies and up (i.e. 2k).  ProRes 422 HQ needs a data rate of 220 Mbs - so that is my upper-limit to smooth video&audio playback with the current system I have, I guess.
Does anyone recommend a fast USB3 or Thunderbolt drive (500Mbs+) where I am able to run 4444HQ movies with no issues to picture or sound (away from the fusion drive)?

  • Audio dropped out when burned on DVD - PRE.

I have finished my movie on PRE 8 and burned it on a DVD in high quality. The problem is the background music works, but the audio from the videos is dropped out. When I play it on PRE 8, the audio works perfectly. The video and audio comes from a JVC Everio HDD. Everything works fine until I burn it.
I did not use Instant Movie or Audio Mixer because I did it manually.
Is there anything I need to do before I burn the DVD, or do I need special settings?
Another problem I have is that Organizer turns off and does not work.

    Patrick,
You gave me an idea for two tests. They are simple and fairly quick and will not require any real editing in PrE, or another NLE.
    Test 1:
From Export/Share, Export your movie. I think you are doing SD/DVD work, so choose DV-AVI. Export just the Video (checkbox for Video and Audio, and you want Video only). This will give you a silent Video-only file. Now, Export>Audio (choose PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit) to get an Audio-only file. Test this Audio-only file. Did you get both the AV's Audio and your Soundtrack? You should. Then, create a new Project to the right specs., and Import those two files. Note, your exact placement of the Audio-only file might not be on Audio Track 1, and just let it go to Audio Track 2. I'd not use Narration, or Soundtrack. Test. Burn to a DVD RW disc, so you do not create a coaster, and test again.
    Test 2:
Do a Save_As, name and locate it. Delete your music from the Soundtrack. Export/Share the movie with both Audio & Video. Test. If things are working now, without the Soundtrack, I'd bring in your music, but try placing it on Audio Track 2. Test. Note: an alternative to this would be to do two Save_As Projects. In one, remove the AV's Audio completely, and then Share/Export just your Soundtrack as an Audio-only file. Choose the same PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit. Then Import that into the first Save_As, the one with no music. Again, try placing this file on Audio Track 2. Test.
I worry that maybe one, or both of the fixed Audio Tracks, Narration, and/or Soundtrack, is getting in the way. The above tests will be quick and should get you the results that you need, with what you have. The tests will also tell us if something is wrong with the Soundtrack Track, as it seems to be killing the AV's Audio on Audio Track 1.
    Good luck, and please report,
    Hunt

  • FCP acts weird when trying to Log Canon HV30 footage HDV

    Hi all,
I have made my first recording with my new HV30 in HDV format with CINE mode. I had couple of tapes from my old DV Canon and i have rewinded a tape from the beginning and started to record over it. It worked fine an the image are great on the HV30.
I want to use FCP for editing and i am trying to Log and Capture the recording. *My problem is that FCP capture is horrible slow. It does not update the capture window more then couple of time in a min. Sound is way off the video. If use Capture Now it starts capturing and then FCP freezes after one min and i think it does that just after the first scene shift.*
I have tried to capture to USB and internal disk but no difference.
    Running Leopard 10.5.2 on a Core 2 Duo 3Ghz
    thanx

Anyone ? It drivez me crazy that i can't log and capture with FCP.
So far i have captured the video with iMovie then imported the footage in FCP.

  • Bluetooth Audio dropping out when Phone goes into screen lock

I have a 3G running 3.0 and a Sony Bluetooth audio capable car stereo. The audio streams perfectly via bluetooth until the phone goes into screen lock or "sleep ", at which time the audio starts drooping out. As soon as you slide to unlock the screen everything works fine again.
Anyone else with this issue ?

Yup, that's exactly what I've had.
I paired a Jabra BT3030 BlueTooth stereo headset module to my 3G and it worked perfectly until the screen went off and then the audio could only be heard intermittently. When the screen came back on, audio was perfect again. This was completely repeatable.
I posted about this the other day, but just prior to that tried again to confirm and I could NOT get it to occur. No matter how many times I put the iPhone to sleep and woke it up, the audio played consistently with NO dropout which is somewhat frustrating and a bit bizarre.
Looks like there is an issue with A2DP if several of us are experiencing the same problem so bug report/feedback to Apple is required I think.
Has anyone else had the problem go away next time you try?

  • Audio drops out when listening to audio only of a video

    Hi guys, some advice please.
I've converted one of my music DVDs to play on my ipod - ripped to my hard drive then converted with Videora ipod converter.
The files play fine in i-tunes and the videos play fine on my i-pod too.
However, when I play the audio track only [driving in the car] I get dropouts in the audio which appear to be in the same place each time. There's no similar dropout when playing the video as mentioned.
I don't get this, anyone have any bright ideas?
    Dell Dimension 4600   Windows XP

Actually, they're not dropouts as such but pauses in the audio.
    Any suggestions?

  • Audio drops out when burning DVD

    Hello -
I have imported itunes to play behind the video clips - it plays well on screen and through Quicktime Player, but after burning to DVD either through toast or iDVD the camera audio is there but not the itunes. Any suggestions??

    Hi CC:
    Welcome to discussions!
Were the songs purchased from iTunes Store? If so, they are most likely protected and you will need to burn them to an Audio CD and import from that.

  • ITouch and Pandora app....audio drop outs

Anybody having audio drop outs when using Pandora? It used to work flawlessly on my home network...nothing changed except maybe the update from Pandora in Aug? Anyway- tried the Pandora app on my Apple network at work...no problem. Is it my home network?...My network is secure...I have a cable modem and Time capsule wireless router. What is REALLY perplexing is that AOL radio app. streams fine to my iTouch.
Please anybody have a solution or similar problem with a fix for this? This was/is the best app for the iTouch and a speaker dock! So frustrating.
    Tried reinstalling the app.....no luck
    ...all updates are current.
    any thoughts?
    Thanks-
    Steve

I saw that post...but I'm not sure it applies to my situation. It doesn't seem to be connected to when my screen is locked or not. As I stated, It works without a hitch at my work but at home it has the dropouts. I would normally think...well it HAS to be my connection or speed or traffic at home BUT Pandora used to work flawlessly...it probably started having the drops after the update. Maybe the locked screen bug has something to do with my problem but I'm not sure. Why would it work at my work w/ an apple router and NOT at home with an apple router?...just plain weird...
I get buffering with LastFM if that is any clue for you? I don't get any buffering with the AOl radio app.
As a note I get no issues when I listen to my Pandora on my desktop both wirelessly and wired....so it HAS to be an iTouch/Pandora issue. I hope you are right that the update will fix my problem.
    Thanks

  • Motion produces audio drop out in FCP

    I'm working in Motion 2.0.1 with FCP 5.0.3. I'm using a G5 Dual 2.7, 4GB RAM with OS X 10.4.3
I created a FCP audio/video sequence with multiple clips and exported it as a self-contained QT movie.
In Motion I used the Glass Panes Open NTSC template...modified some lengths and added a number of additional layers. I dragged and dropped the previously mentioned QT movie into various layers. I used the slip tool to move the clips where I wanted them in the various layers. Everything looks and sounds fine at this point.
I export the Motion project as a QT movie (self-contained) and import it into FCP. The video still looks great but I get audio dropouts periodically through the movie.
I've trashed Motion preferences, I've played it only in the QT player with same results. I've gone back and exported the original FCP sequence another time...rebuilt the project again and had the same results.
Okay, I realize the work-around is to use the original audio while keeping the video portion of what was created in Motion. And of course that's what I've started doing now, but why should I have to go to that extra work?
Have any, of the many, much more experienced users of Motion come across this problem before. If so what did you do about it?
    Thanks
    Doug

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Can you guess how I feel? Okay, here's the answer to my own question, and I hope no one else has to waste hours of time like I did on this one.
When I exported the QT movie of course I used the "Export Preset" for DV NTSC Movie, because that's what naturally pops up in the dialogue box. But guess what ladies and gentlemen, if you're going to use this movie in FCP that's not what you need to do. Instead you need to make the additional step of clicking on the "Options..." button. Once you do this you will notice the sample rate for "Audio" is by default set to 44.1kHz. You need to select the disclosure triangle and then select 48 kHz. Once you do this your QT movies will in fact actually play in FCP.
Geez, I can't believe I went to all the trouble of re-inserting the original audio where all the drop outs were. Of course now I will begin putting in the new QT movies since the ones I have in there now have 44.1 kHz and that might produce audio drop outs when I print this baby to tape.
At least I can take solice in knowing that the hour plus I spent with the folks at pro video support didn't arrive with a solution either, and that I eventually figured it out on my own. Can I give myself points for this? Of course not. But I certainly hope I can give someone out there a little peace of mind if ever they come across the same issue.
    Happy Thanksgiving

  • Audio glitches and drops out when using varispeed

So I have a very complex drum part to record and need to drop the tempo about 10% to get it right.
My problem is that I can only get reliable audio when I use varispeed for playback (and even then, there are noticeable "flakey" artifacts);  If I try recording anything, I get glitching and after about 3 seconds all audio drops-out.
I tried varying i/o buffer, processing threads and process buffer range, also muting/unmuting the 14 tracks I'm trying to record but nothing seems to solve it.
    Anyone have any advice?
    Thanks,
    Chuck

It's not a mac/tv problem, it is a network problem.
Power cycling is simply unplugging the device from power and plugging it back in.  A restart is not sufficient, in most cases, to reset the network connection.
