HELP: AVCHD Log & Transfer idle problem for iMac 27"

I just bought an Apple iMac 27" but I cannot do a Log & Transfer.
I used the same SDHC card that I log & transfer succesfully in the old 24" iMac.
But when I did a Log & Transfer in the new 27" iMac, I got into this:
1) FCE4 can detect the card & show all the thumbnails without problem.
2) When I drag a clip into the bottom or click add to queue, it says transferring clip#6 .... but the progress bar didn't move ...
3) after a while, it says 1 clip idle ....
what happen ? how come the clip#6 cannot be imported ? I tried all the clips, but faced with the same problem, it ended up says idle but nothing was transferred to the browser !!
Any ideas ?
Thanks

ok guys,
problem resolved by doing this:
1) right click on the clip
2) goto preference after right clicking on the clip
3) Under AVCHD plugin > AC-3 > Plain Sound
I dunno why it works but after changing from the default Matrix Sound to Plain Sound, it can import so fast ! This new iMac 27" is so much faster than my old 24" iMac ...
If Matrix sound doesn't work why is it there in the first place ?
Cheers

  • AVCHD log & transfer for Canon HF M31

    Hi there,
I just got my Canon HF M31. I tested it for 1920 x 1080. I did the log & transfer but there was nothing, no thumbnails.
So, I click the top right icon to indicate the folder. When there are so many folders & subfolders in the SDHC card.
Can I know whether am I supposed to click the filenames or the folder's name ? What files format am I supposed to look out for ?
    Thanks

The top level means the top level. Select the card. Do not go inside it to any folder.
Sorry Tom, what I meant was, there was no clips (or thumbnails) on the log & transfer window ...
What I did was I select the highest level, ie the topmost level of the SDHC card but there are no clips whatsover in the log & transfer window.
But I am sure my Macbook can detect the SDHC card (bcos I can read/see the content of the card in the FINDER), it is only which folder to select in the log & transfer window.
Which one to select is tedious bcos there are so many folders & sub-folders. Ok, the default structure of the SDHC card is as follows:
    Level 1, NONAME
    Level 2, PRIVATE
    Level 3, AVCHD, MY_MUSIC
Level 4 (for AVCHD), BDMV, CANON, CANONTHM
Level 5 (for BDMV), STREAM, and many other subfolders .....
    Level 6 (for STREAM), 0000.MTS, 0001.MTS, 0002.MTS, 0003.MTS ... 006.MTS
My guess is that 0000.MTS, 0001.MTS, 0002.MTS, 0003.MTS ... 006.MTS are the clips, so I select the folder STREAM whose structure is as follows:
    NONAME > PRIVATE > AVCHD > BDMV > STREAM
but it doesn't work (meaning no clips, no thumbnails)
So, I select PRIVATE, also no clips or no thumbnails !!
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks
    Ok, here's an update:
I clicked on the NONAME folder & waited. It took 2 mins before all the 7 clips/icons/thumbnails appear in the Log & Transfer window.
I tried clicking on AVCHD, it also took 2 mins to appear but the folder is named as NONAME instead of AVCHD.
At times I randomly clicked other folders, AVCHD appeared .... dunno why ...
    QUESTION:
Now I have 7 clips of about 5 mins long each & it took 2 mins to appear in the Log & Transfer window. If later I record more videos & add on many more clips into the SDHC card, will it take even longer for the clips/thumbnails to appear ?
    Thanks

  • AVCHD log & transfer problems

I'm trying to log and transfer from my HF10 in to FCE. The files appear and play fine in the log and capture window. When I drag the particular file/s to the 'add to queue list', it begins its work as normal. After some seconds (in the status tab) an exclamation mark appears in red. Obviously it hasn't worked correctly. Can anyone help please?!!

  • AVCHD Log & Transfer

Heres one for you. When I transfer files from my HFS100's card into FCP it recognizes the thumbnails. So I continue to log the footage. It spins the wheel and goes all of the way until the transfer is complete, but doesn't place it in the bin? It is as if it is completed, but has gone to never-never land.

It sounds like there might be a problem with the clip (or clips) themselves, but I haven't seen this before.
Here are 2 things to try:
    1. Try getting the clips into iMovie, export them in a convenient format, and then import to FCP. iMovie transcodes to Apple Intermediate Codec.
    2. If you want more control, or ProRes422 (which is better quality than AIC), but a bit more effort, then download MPEG Streamclip (it's free - google it) and use that do convert the files to ProRes.
Neither actually explains why you have the problem, but it will get the clips into FCP, and help determine whether the clip files are the problem, or something else.

  • Log and capture problems for HDV using FCP 5.0.1

I cant seem to get a picture in my log and capture browser when using HDV. The screen says my camera is connected, I see timecode correctly rolling in sync with my cameras timecode, I can use the controls, but no picture on the screen?
When I hit capture now, the capture screen pops up and gives a message "waiting for data from device".
we shot at 720p at 25fps, there is no capture preset for this in my version of FCP. Could this be the problem? Please help!!

    Thanks for responding.
It's a mac osx 10.4.11 and a 2 ghz intel core duo. I'm using easy set up in final cut pro, but there is no option for hd fire wire basic (which apple support told me to look for). The only hd options are 1080i50, i60 and 720 p30. The other hd options are for the apple intermediate codec. When I use the easy set up for hd 1080i60, then go to log and capture, it doesn't give me the preview window to set in's out, batch capture etc. It only lets me capture straight from the camera and I have to manually stop it and start it which is a major pain. Plus the clips need to be rendered once I put them in a timeline. I've shot and edited on mini dv with final cut for nearly 7 years, but now that i've tried to upgrade and shoot hd mini dv, all of these problems have arrived in capturing. I'm starting to think my version of final cut pro (5.0.1) just doesn't work with hd, unless it's very time consuming. Any ideas?

  • Another AVCHD  Log & Transfer thread

I've been experimenting with capturing AVCHD files directly from a sony MC50U.
I've captured directly from the camera and from a backups of the camera's internal memory. Everything seems fine.
I just went to do another import test and discovered that FCP was automatically recognizing both the camera AND one of the camera directory back-ups which I dragged to my drive earlier. It scared me at first because I knew those files should no longer be on the camera.
But the strange thing is that it's not automatically finding a few other back ups which also have the entire directory structure intact.
Why would FCP automatically find one of the camera memory back-ups but not the others?
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Also... does anyone know why the directory structure for the camera's internal memory is different from the directory structure of an SDHC card?
    internal memory contains:
    AVCHD (folder)
    AVF_INFO (folder)
    MODELCFG.IND (file)
The directory structure for an SDHC card is:
    AVF_INFO (folder)
    PRIVATE (folder)
The PRIVATE folder contains the same hierarchy as the AVCHD folder from the internal memory Back-ups.
    Appreciate any insight.
    thanks

That shouldn't be so slow, unless there is a problem with the slot or the card.
I copied to my internal HDD & do a L&T vial the SDHC slot, it also took the same time. I tried on my old 24" iMac, it is also that slow. It is only on my macbook pro that it is fast ...
Is there a problem with my new 27" iMac ?
"U mean copy the whole 16GB from the sdhc card into the iMac internal HDD ?"
No, usually a secondary drive. You should have some backup or archive of your media.
Ok, I am copying to my FW800 ext HDD now ....

  • Ups transfer time needed for imac 27

I have been given the royal run around by Apple "Genius" employees and lied to by Staples techs.
Can anyone tell me the proper UPS to use for an iMac 27?  And please give me the reason why.
I would greatly appreciate the help.

    Dear Rkaufmann87,
I have been performing my due diligence for 2 days. Without due diligence, I would not have discovered that iMacs have different power shut down times than other units. It IS Apples duty to inform me of the amount of time in which the computer takes to detect a no power event.  Apple Senior Tech Joe advised me that any UPS which provides a transfer time under 1 second will work appropriately for the iMac 27.  Due diligence also uncovered the fact that APC does not include transfer times in all of its documentation for each UPS unit.  It takes emails to very skilled APC techs to get to the proper answers in that respect.  Thanks for your input.

  • AVCHD Log & Transfer Captures First Half of Clip

I am using Log and Transfer in FCE 4 to capture AVCHD Lite files from my Panasonic DMC-ZS7. It brings in all of the clips, but only the 1st 1/2 of the clip. In other words, a 2 minute video clip results in a 1 minute clip imported. Ideas?
BTW, the same clips import perfectly into iMovie.

Tom, thanks for the information. I understand what you are saying from the technical point of view (which is apparently Apple's point of view too), but from a MARKETING perspective, as a consumer, it is annoying that I have to bring the AVCHD Lite files into iMovie, then import those files into FCE. Whatever iMovie is doing to convert those files into usable FCE files, FCE should be able to do on its own.

Working with AVCHD: Log and Transfer FAQs
Log and Transfer was introduced to the product chain in Final Cut Express 4, and is the program's process for ingesting files in the AVCHD format utilizing MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video coding and either Dolby AC-3 or uncompressed linear PCM audio coding. The most frequently observed problems relating to the Log and Transfer process are generally quite easily addressed.
What should I know before attempting to ingest my footage?
The following facts regarding the Log and Transfer process were adapted from the [Apple Knowledge Base article|http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24840?viewlocale=en_US] on transferring AVCHD in Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 but still hold true for the current version of FCE:
AVCHD support is available only on Intel-based Macintosh computers.
AVCHD camcorders typically connect to computers via USB 2.0, not FireWire.
DVD-based AVCHD camcorders are not supported in Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier.
Standard definition video recorded with AVCHD camcorders cannot be accessed in the Log and Transfer window. SD and HD clips should not be mixed on the same HDD.
Preview of AVCHD video in the Log and Transfer window is limited to 1x forward playback. Scrubbing the playhead does not update the video in the Preview area until you stop scrubbing.
When you choose to transfer AVCHD audio in the Logging area, audio is automatically mixed down to stereo.
AVCHD footage is not ingested natively but is transcoded to the Apple Intermediate Codec.
Apple Intermediate Codec files are significantly larger than the original AVCHD files. FCE does not estimate the size of a transcoded AVCHD file before ingesting, so it is possible to exceed the available space on your capture disk during transfer. Before ingesting, keep in mind that the disk space required is about ten times greater than the size of the native AVCHD file.
Which specific formats can be ingested by Log and Transfer?
Only AVCHD footage can be ingested through the Log and Transfer process. Other formats and variants such as AVCHD Lite are not supported. All video should be recorded in a frame size of either 1440x1080 or 1920x1080 and a frame rate of 25 or 29.97 frames per second. Audio recorded on AVCHD camcorders is generally at a rate of 48kHz. If your camera shoots in a format that does not comply with one of these setups then it is most likely not supported by the application and is not guaranteed to work correctly.
Which Easy Setup preset should I select before ingesting my footage?
It is extremely important to select the preset that matches your media before you attempt to ingest via Log and Transfer. There is only one Easy Setup preset that matches the frame size and rate of your footage. If you intend to ingest AVCHD clips through Log and Transfer you will first need to select one of the following presets:
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i50
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i50
    AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60
If these four options do not appear under your Easy Setup list then you probably need to run Software Update and update to FCE 4.0.1. DO NOT cycle through the available presets until you find one that works - there is only one preset that matches your media and it should be evident which one to choose by the way it is named. Select the AVCHD preset that mentions your frame size and frame rate (i50 presets support both 50i and 25p frame rates; similarly, i60 presets support both 60i and 29.97p frame rates). If you do cycle through many options in the hope of selecting the correct one through guess-and-check you will probably have corrupted your preference file and need to [trash your preferences|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2611] before continuing.
Why don't my clips appear when I open the Log and Transfer window?
Make sure your camcorder records AVCHD in a format supported by FCE4. It should be connected to one of your computer's USB ports (never connect it to an external hard drive or other external device such as your keyboard or a USB hub), powered on, and set to video playback mode.
If the camcorder +does not+ mount on your Desktop your USB port or cable may be malfunctioning. Try plugging it in to another port or using a different USB cable to see if it makes a difference.
If the camcorder does mount on your Desktop but the clips do not appear in the Log and Transfer window you will need to point the program to the directory that contains your media.
First, click the Add Folder button in the upper left of the Log and Transfer window. The button looks like this:
Then, you will need to navigate to the root directory in which your media is stored. Most camcorders call this folder "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD" and it should be located at the very top level of the camcorder when mounted. If your camcorder records to a valid AVCHD directory structure then your clips should load after the Add Folder process is completed.
I would like to keep a working backup of my original clips so that I can delete them off the camcorder's internal memory. How should I do this?
There are two main ways to keep a backup of your clips. The first is to ingest every clip on your camcorder through the Log and Transfer process, and store the Apple Intermediate Codec files the application creates in an easily accessible place such as an external FireWire drive. The advantage of this method is that you have the ability to open back up old editing projects, reconnect the media as necessary, and keep going as if you'd never left. However, due to the large amount of space AIC takes up (usually somewhere in the vicinity of 41-50GB an hour when transcoded from AVCHD), this is not always feasible.
Another often preferable approach is to copy over the root directory in which your clips are stored (usually named "PRIVATE" or "AVCHD") from the camcorder to your computer or an external drive. As long as you maintain the original file structure, you will be able to ingest your clips again at a later date using the "Add Folder" process detailed above to navigate to their new location.
My clips appear, but when I attempt to ingest a red exclamation point appears and the window displays the message "Error: No Data"
This is one of the most common problems that users experience when trying to ingest their media through the Log and Transfer process. Luckily, it also has one of the easiest solutions.
In the Log and Transfer window, click on the gear icon in the top right and select "Preferences" in the contextual menu that appears.
Make sure the video is set to transcode to the Apple Intermediate Codec and the audio is set to Plain Stereo.
After doing so, hit OK and try to ingest again.
I am experiencing a problem that is not covered in this tip or the solutions here do not work.

  • Log & Transfer of AVCHD fails to transfer - Write TimeCodeTrack Error -2008

    Hi,
I'm testing out my new Canon HF11 and copied the AVCHD directory for a test shot onto my hard drive, created a new project in FCE 4.01, created a Bin, set it to default capture bin, then started Log & Transfer.
When I select the AVCHD directory I see the two clips I recorded, and I can preview them in the L&T preview window. Dragging them to the Transfer Queue works, and I see the spinning disk to indicate it is being processed. After the progress bar reaches 100% the disk stops spinning, but there is nothing in the Bin.
When I click on the clip in the transfer window it changes to indicate there was an error.
Looking in the COnsole log shows:

    Help?
    Thanks,

    MacPro Dual 2.66 Xeon (2007 model), 8800GT video, 10.5.6
OS and application drive has 463Gigs Free.
Video is being captured to 2 drives - one has 429 Gigs free, the second has 230 Gigs free.
The clip I'm trying to process is 00:01:07 (one minute, 7 seconds). It was recorded on the FH11 at the highest resolution (1920x1080, Cine Mode) and I selected AIC 1920x1080-60I and changed Matrix to Stereo in the L&T properties.

  • Please help RE retrieval/transfer of imac hard drive to imac Part 2

Absolutely any assistance would be gratefully appreciated thank you. I am computer illiterate and I need assistance retrieving data from a imac hard drive (rest of computer isn't working) to a newer imac. Previously had received help from the forum and found out I needed an external casing (thank you again to all those that helped), but no shops near me sell them, sales person told me Sata HDD Docking (OTB) would be able to do a similar thing. I really suck with technology, so I humbly ask if any patient persons more intelligent than me could help me with some basic questions to help me retrieve/transfer data. Let me know if I need to give details. Any links to guides or tutorials welcome as well, but I tend to second guess myself and fail at basic terms often, there are probably 6 year olds with better computer skills and knowledge than me, so yeah, pity welcome, help even more so. Oh first question am I still suppose to use Migration Assistent or do I just turn on computer with old HD in dock connected?

Okay, I apologize for throwing you the following curveball - it appears the shop assistent I was talking to may not have been as knowledgeable as I had hoped, because I don't think my imac is compatible with USB 3.0? I tried putting it into the dock but nothing happened - it gave me four options, transfer from another Mac, transfer from a PC, transfer from a Time Machine (and something else) and forth option was not to transfer now.
I attempted to transfer from Mac and Time Machine options, but with both the loading dial spun for 10 mins with each with no change. So I decided to try and set up the computer anyway. The internet set up part came up but at the time I didn't know how to set it up, and now with retrospect I assume I have to set that up before I "register this computer" as no hard drive is showing onmy computer at the moment? Sorry for the sudden and strange switch in problems but now that I have set up the internet - could you or anyone else please tell me how I can register the computer details (or why the hard drive icon is not appearing assuming those things are connected - when I did fill those details out before it told me it couldn't send them now and would have to be done later?)
Sorry for being so clueless - any help appreciated.
I am looking up my imacs specs now to see if it actually can access this dock. (thank you once again)

  • Question about AVCHD & Log and Transfer

I will be recording videos in a remote location for five days next month. The recordings will be about 1.5 hr each, for a total of twenty two separate presentations. If I purchase a hard drive camcorder (Sony HDR-XR550V) for this event, will log & transfer dump the whole lot into FCE or will they be split up so I can select them in proper order.
I would rather use a camcorder that recorded to an external memory card, but twenty two gets very expensive.

Yes, to use AVCHD material you should upgrade your FCE to version 4.0.1. This is a free upgrade.
    To do this:
The first thing you should do is buy or obtain an external hard disk of equal or greater size to the system disk you have now inside your computer and make a +clone copy+ of your system disk. This is to protect you if something should go wrong during the upgrade, or if your internal hard disk should ever fail, you will have a fully functioning copy of your hard disk to use to restore your work.
You can get Carbon Copy Cloner, a shareware software that is almost an industry standard, here:
    http://www.bombich.com/
After you have made a clone of your system hard drive, (which may take several hours the first time you do it), then go to the Apple menu in the upper left corner of your screen and select Software Update.
This will look at all the Apple software that is on your computer and find any software that needs updating.
You will be presented by a list of all the software on your computer that can be updated, you should see Final Cut Express somewhere in that list.
If you do not see it, have you moved the application from where it was originally installed, or renamed it? It needs to be in it's original location in the application folder, with it's original name for Software Update to work.
You can deselect any software you don't want updated from the list, then start the software updater.
You may need to restart your machine to complete the installation.
I would expect no difficulties from upgrading your software, but you have your cloned backup just in case. Once you have made a clone back up, get in the habit of re-cloning your drive every other day or so to protect your work. After the initial cloning, the cloning will take much less time as it will only make the changes you have made to your system disk on your clone - not recopy the whole thing as it did the first time.
    Hope this helps.
