Help, Ayudame! Power Mac G4 doesn't start up
Guys, I have seen this posted several times for the notebook, but not for the desktop. I turned off my PowerMac G4, unplugged and went on vacation. Came back, plugged the G4 in and turned on via monitor. The startup light on the monitor lights up but the screen is dark, the tower makes no sound. If I press the startup button on the tower, same thing: light goes on but no sound and no display on screen. I have unplugged all other devices, I have plugged into different sockets, I have unattached and then attached the monitor, still no image on screen. Apple Care says it sounds like a hardware problem. Any suggestions on what I can do before I spend big bucks to fix this?

I turned off my PowerMac G4, unplugged and went on vacation.
At that point the internal battery began to be used up - it is used whenever the Mac is unplugged. If the battery was already old, it may now be too weak or dead; many Macs have starting problems when that happens.
Try replacing the battery - you can get one for about US$15 at places like Radio Shack, cheaper on line.
If your G4 is an AGP or later model, try also resetting the PMU -

Nieuw op dit forum toch gelijk al een brandende vraag: wij hebben na jarenlang 2 Power Macs G4 gedeeld te hebben nu een iMac G5 aangeschaft die we dus samen met de G4 willen delen. Nu krijgen we alleen de oude Mac niet meer opgestart. Verscheidene toetscombinaties geprobeerd maar niets werkt. Afwisselend krijgen we een blauw scherm met pijlen of een grijs scherm met een map met vraagteken. Iemand een idee wat we kunnen doen? Apple zelf ondersteunt niet meer apparatuur van 7 jaar en/of ouder. Mogelijk ligt het ook aan het netwerk of heb ik iets niet goed aangesloten. De iMac G5 draait ook onder 10.4.11.

New to this forum as it has a burning question: after years we have 2 PowerMac G4 divide have now bought an iMac G5 so we want to share with the G4. Now we get only the old Mac does not boot. Try holding the Option/alt key down at bootup, does the Startup Manager show any Drives to boot from?

Power Mac 7600 doesn't start from Mac OS 9.1 CD
I'm trying to boot from a Mac OS 9.1 CD on a Power Mac 7600 I'm trying to bring back to life
but it appears the blinking question mark. I've tried using the "C" command but it simply doesn't boot.
Any ideas?

---First, has anyone pulled/replaced/moved RAM modules? My experiences with several 7600's at work back in the 1990s was that the RAM needed to be matched in order in the slots and by size regardless of what the specs and several third-party tech reviews say.
There are eight RAM slots in two groups (of three and five slots) separated by an offset slot for a cache module You should see ID codes on the logic board by each slot: A1, A2, A3, A4; and B1, B2, B3, and B4. You want to load the slots in this order: A1, B1, A2, B2, etc, and match the module size so modules of the same size are paired. My 7600 has this pattern:
A1: 128MB B1: 128MB
A2: 32MB B2: 32MB
A3: 16MB B3: 16MB
A4: 16MB B3: 16MB
So, if modules don't match, match them and try again
Pairing RAM in this model gives a significant performance boost; the data path goes from 64-bit to 128-bit.
---Is the OS9 disk a full retail install disk or a gray one that came with a newer Mac? That could affect startup, Some disks for much newer Macs may not start a pre-G3 Mac.
---If the commuter has been off wall power for a long time the PRAM battery is likely deader than Yorick. That could affect startup from the hard drive but should not be at play when starting from a CD.
---Another issue that affects old computers that have been stored and moved around is loose cards. Make sure all card and modules are fully seated, especially the processor card.

After update MAC OS doesn't start anymore

i just installed the new updates my MAC OS required (intel security update 01-2009 an some kind of flash plugin) and now MAC OS doesn't start anymore
i press the power button and then at first the apple icon appears and then i begins to load ... nearly an hour it loaded until i tried again ...
it doesn't work ...
my windows vista partition on the same notebook is still working so what about the update now???

The thunderbolt outputs on my new power mac pro doesn't work
Ttrying to use a new 3tb thunderbolt external HD and my Power Mac Pro doesn't see the drive but it works fine on my Mac Mini.
Have had this computer less than 4 weeks.

TomThe current Mac Pro does not have Thunderbolt ports, it has Mini DisplayPorts that are physically identical to Thunderbolt but only pass video signals. The Mac Pro that is coming out in December (small black cylinder) will have Thunderbolt.

My Mac HD doesn't start up, I get the reinstall prompt and do not see a macintosh HD icon while starting up using option key.
When start up I land into the Mac OSX Installer. Has my LION crashed or the HD is not responding?Try booting while holding down the Option key but make sure there aren't any disks in the optical drive first.

Note: It is possible that the SMC could encounter an issue that may cause unusual system behavior typically related to the symptoms described below. In some cases, resetting the SMC may be the only correct method to resolve the issue, however, an SMC reset should only be attempted after all other standard troubleshooting has been performed.
So I hope it is fixed for now. But could someone also post another solution? -
Please help! 2.7 Power Mac froze, won't start up past white apple screen!

I own a Dual processor 2.7 power mac G5. I only had safari and itunes running when everything came to a freeze without any kind of crash message. Upon force-shutting down the computer, the white screen with the gray apple came up, but would not move past this point! I also did not notice any sounds coming from my machine! I force-shutdown and started it up again and the same occurred. I left the room to jump on this computer (my old, trusty G3 iMac) to try and research while I let it try to start up. When I entered back into the room, I heard the fans going a pretty full-blaze with the white screen w/ apple still starring at me. So I shut it down and came here to post. If it is major issue, at this point, I just want all of my data to be safe. Can someone help me? Any ideas or suggestions? I am not thinking too clearly.Hi-
Don't give up yet.
There are a few things to try before hauling the machine in for diagnosis.
What I think you should do now, is to follow all the steps (in order) as listed/described in this article:

Even if you have tried before, please follow the order of troubleshooting.
Each step helps to isolate the problem.
Removing all but keyboard, mouse, and monitor is important.
Try the Safe Mode boot, followed by resetting the PRAM.
In lieu of repairing with Disk Utility, try and start to your DiskWarrior disk.
Remember, booting to Disk warrior can take several minutes, so be patient.
In the "Remove third-party RAM and internal hardware" step, try removing and reseating the RAM, and graphics card, attempting to boot after RAM, and again after graphics card.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to try booting the G5 to firewire target disk mode.
but I wonder what my G5 (the fans, in particular) would make of that interaction. hmm . . .
The fans are just noisy. They will insure that overheat damage doesn't occur.
If the firewire boot is successful, it may be wise to copy your files so that you can try a reinstall of the OS, should that be necessary.

My Power Mac G5 version 10.4.11 keeps showing a black video, no beep, no start up chim, this occured after updating a security patch 2008-7 from Apple website, asked to reboot then I encountered this mess.
The powerlight is turn on with solid white color. My display also has its powerlight turn on with solid white. But not nothing happens, except the fan noise becomes gradually louder and louder. I wait for hours ... but ...
My system just won't start up. Although I tried to reset the SMU, reseated RAM...
I tried also to re-install the OS by CD but it's impossible to insert it to the DVD tray.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.

After weeks of strugle I can use my MAC as normal, but everytime I shut it down, she cannot wake-up, I had to refer to your hints in order to start it up again. So right now I can use my MAC every day with "SLEEP" mode.
She just cannot RE-START or wake up after a SHUTDOWN.
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated, here under I pasted the log file retrieved from Disk Utilities.
(I tried also to reset PMU, SMU and PRAM but nothing helped. Perhaps she is in need of a brand new PRAM battery???

Help!! My Power Mac G5 won't start up!!
I was working on my computer when all of a sudden everything froze. I tried all the key commands and no response. So, I held the start button until it shut down. Then when I tried to start it back up again after a few minutes, by pushing the start button, only the fan starts. No start up chime. Nothing on my screen. Then the fan starts getting louder and louder like it going to explode! I quickly held the start button again until it shut down. I read through the manual and tried everything it said and still the same thing. I read through alot of the questions and answers on this forum...found alot of similar questions, but no answers that I can use. I tried replacing the surge protector, but still nothing. My business & life is on this computer and stupid me, I didn't back up much! Help!!

Testing and repairing your startup disk
If you have problems with your startup disk, you can use Disk Utility to test and repair it. To do so, you must start up from another disk, such as your Install Mac OS X disc.
Start up your computer using another disk.
To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc and restart your computer holding down the"C" Key OR (Option key and then select the Install Mac OS X disc and click the arrow).
Open Disk Utility.
In the Mac OS X Installer, choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility.
Select the startup disk you want to repair in the list of disks and volumes, then click First Aid.

You may hear a startup chime
You may hear fan or drive noise
You may see the power light on the computer light up
If your computer does not turn on, when you press the power button:
You won't hear a startup chime
You won't hear any fan or drive noise
The power indicator on the computer won't light up at all

If your computer won't display video but you can hear a startup chime, fans, drive noise, or you see the power light turn on, the first question is whether you have an external display attached (such as a Power Mac G4, Power Mac G5, Mac Pro or Mac mini) or if the display is built-in (such as an iMac, eMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, iBook or PowerBook).
For external displays
Try these steps to resolve the issue:
Make sure that the monitor is turned on and has power. Make sure that the display's power cord is plugged into a working wall outlet, and that it's properly connected to the power adapter. (To check if the wall socket is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.)
Check that all video cable connections to the computer video port and to the monitor are properly connected.
Examine the pins on the video cable connector to make sure they are not bent or damaged in any way.
Connect a known working display (if you have an extra one available). If you see video after doing so, replace your old display.
Reset the computer's parameter RAM. (Click the link for instructions.)
On a Mac mini, reset the computer's PMU. (Click the link for instructions.) For Power Macintosh G3, Power Mac G4, or Power Mac G5 computers, check your user guide for the location of the PMU reset button on the logic board.
Next we're going to check to see if the computer has video when started up from a disc:
Find the Install or Restore disc that came with the computer. Insert the Software Install and Restore disc into your CD/DVD drive. The disc may look something like the picture below.
Shut down your computer.
Once it's off, hold down the C key on the keyboard and start up your computer. This will start up the computer from the Software Install and Restore disc instead of your hard drive.
If you see video when started up from disc, you may have corrupted software. You can use the Archive and Install feature of the Mac OS X installer to reinstall. This kind of installation gives you a fresh version of Mac OS X, but you don't lose any data from the computer as your old information is all archived.

For built-in displays

Dual 1.8Gb power mac G5 won't start up. No chime or video.
I have a dual 1.8Gb power mac G5 that won't start up after the weekend. The computer was being run as a server using OSX 10.3. When my employee came in on Monday she said the fan was running full blast, but there was no video and the computer was totally unresponsive. The computer has been restarted with and without periferials plugged in, reset the PRAM and SMU/PMU/Cuda switch. Tried different monitor. I've put the hard drive in another G5 and it worked fine. I've also noticed that this computer does not click (sounds like a relay) when plugging/unplugging the power cord. I've always noticed my other G5 does this. Any ideas? I'd like to try and fix it myself and save the "Apple Authorized Service Provider" costs. Thanks!
EricIt doesn't seem to matter if anything is hooked up or not ... mine nor his. I've tried three different power cords in two different locations. I wouldn't know what to "tighten" inside.
Most recently at home I've tried using just the mac keyboard an mouse connected to there own USB ports off the back of the CPU and then the Apple 17" studio display from the ADC output. Still nothing. I then tried the same setup, but with a 17" CRT monitor using the DVI output and the adaptor (finally found the adaptor). It booted up fully once, but then died (I wasn't there when it happened, but when I came back no video, fans on full, and unresponsive). I hadn't had any more success until this morning when I tried to fire it up again, and it came on, but with distorted video (the one that says you need to restart your computer). I'm beginning to think this is a bad power supply problem due to the specific component failure (same bad capacitors as the iMacs), but mine doesn't quite fall within the serial number range (just before).

Power Mac G4 won't start up after shut down
I have a Power Mac G4 (dual 1 GHz with 2 GB of RAM) running OS X 10.4.11. It has the mirror drive doors and was once referred to as the “wind tunnel”.
The problem is that it will not start up after it has been shut down unless I first push the reset button. I have tried replacing the battery and resetting the p-ram. When I try to start it without first pushing the reset button nothing happens. The light for the start button doesn’t even come on. But if I disconnect the power, open it up and push the reset button it will start up and run perfectly.

The PSU is one that I put in a few years back when Apple was giving them out so as to reduce the fan noise. I kept the old one until last week when I sent it off to be recycled. I suppose it would be a tough job to find the bad capacitor and I doubt that I would have the skill to replace it even if I could find it. It's not like I really need this power mac since I have a Mac Pro 1,1 but I do occasionally want to run something in OS 9 and I do love this machine for what ever reason. There was remarkably little dust inside but I went over it with a can of dust remover.

Power Mac G4 won't start - no activity except light.
I have a Power Mac G4 (1.25ghz, 2.25gb RAM, 80gb HDD) that is having somewhat of a strange problem. Basically it's not powering on at all, the light powers on when you push it but once released it goes out. No sound, no fans, no other activity. However if you hold the button in the light will stay on. It's almost identical to the problem this gentleman had:

No I have already tried reseating all the connections on the board (power, RAM, GPU, etc.), tried booting it with only the original 256mb DDR stick of RAM, booting with known working RAM, and resetting the PMU.
I am thinking at this point it may have to do with the PSU, but I thought I would post here to see if anyone had any other ideas. Apparently I am not the first person to have this issue and was wondering if anyone here had something similar, and how you resolved it. Thanks!It can be due to the button itself. See this:

The power button lives on a separate component called the "front panel board." or "FPB" hereafter. They can fail, and are a much cheaper fix than a new PSU of logic board.
An Apple tech at a nearby college told me a way to test for a bad FPB. It requires that you find one of the original Apple USB keyboards that came with the first iMacs. It's model M2452 and, unlike newer keyboards, has a power button much like teh older Apple ADB boards.
The tech said that, when using the old iMac board, the power button overrides the buton on teh FPB and should start the computer if only the FPB board is bad. If the keyboard switch does not work, then there is something more expensive at fault. -
Power Mac G5 fails to start up with Airport Extreme card in.
Hello.
I just received a 'new' Airport Extreme card for my Power Mac G5 1.8 (900fsb). I just installed it and it failed to start up with it in. The mac started up but without my Apple LCD and any USB devices. I did a PMU reset on the logic board and took out the Crucial 3rd party 512mb RAM and tried again but it won't start up. When I take the card out it's business as usual.
Is it the card or the mac that's at fault? Has anyone had this problem too?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.This problem can happen if:
- the card has not been fully seated into its socket (doing that can take a firm push) or if you installed the card upside down
- the card is defective
- the card socket in the PowerMac G5 has broken or bent contact pins

If you are sure the card has been properly installed, you are gong to have to either (a) try a different Airport Extreme card or (b) let an Apple dealer or service center take a look at your PowerMac G5.
