Help! Before I buy iwork 08 for $79 (in Canada). . .

This is my first mac, and one of my biggest disappointments was that it did not come with a simple, non-commercial word processor. I recently switched from desktop pc to macbook w/ external keyboard and monitor when I broke my back and could no longer use a chair. I cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars just to write personal letters, etc. I know this will sounds like a stupid question, but it seems, until I have mastered "macspeak," feeling stupid (however new and unfamiliar the experience) is something I'll have to get used to. Here is my question: Is iwork08 is a stand-alone program, or only an upgrade? A simple yes or no will do.

matisse,
Welcome to Apple discussions.
You asked for a simple yes or no answer. That's difficult because of the phrasing of your question, but I'll give it a shot.
No, technically iWork isn't a simple stand-alone program -- because it isn't a program. It's a suite of programs comprised of Pages (word processing/layout), Numbers (spreadsheet), and Keynote (presentation).
Is it an upgrade? Yes. But I think that may mean something different to you than it does to me, because you put it in contrast to it being a stand-alone program. It's an upgrade to iWork '06, but that doesn't mean you have to own '06 in order to use '08.
What's a non-commercial word processor? Is it one that the publisher doesn't charge money for? If you've got a new Mac, then you've got a copy of TextEdit on it, which is suitable for writing letters. And you've also got a demo version of iWork, so you can see for yourself if it's simple enough for your needs. Just look inside the Applications folder.

  • Help Before I Buy an iMac

I have an HP Desktop and I'm ready to convert to the iMac. I have a question:
I would like to purchase the iMac, partition the hard drive and install windows XP on it, move EVERYTHING over from my HP to the partitioned drive to the windows side of my Mac, so that I won't lose programs I've had for years, etc.
    Is that possible ???

Your data files such as you music, photos, MS Office files etc are probably saved in your "My Documents" folder on your PC. My recommendation is to move the contents of that folder onto an external HD, when you get your new iMac and load Windows simply move all those files from the external HD to your iMac. It's just a drag and drop process. When you load Windows on an iMac it runs identically to your HP machine (well it's probably going to be faster than your HP) so it's really no different than buying another HP, Dell, Toshiba, etc Windows box.
Also if you buy your iMac at an Apple store inquire to see if they will provide this service to you.
You might get some useful hints from these links:
    http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/
The application software is products such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop etc if you have a license and want to move it to your new iMac you will have to do an installation just like you did when you bought the software and ran it on your HP. Obviously you need to have valid licenses and need to understand what each application's license allows you to do. Every software manufacturer is a little different. For example Microsoft's basic license allows the use of the software on one machine only, however if you are moving to a new machine you need to ask Microsoft how to do that.
BTW when you ask us to elaborate it would be helpful if you told us what to elaborate on.

    What classes?
-Do I have to buy Windows 7 OS for Macintosh?
If you want to run it on the Mac you will. Check with your school and see if they offer cut-rate education deals on these things.
-Do I have to buy Microsoft Office again?
No. You can use the Mac version.
-Can I transfer Microsft Office to Windows 7 on my Mac using Boot Camp?
Yes, but that seems like an awful lot of hassle. I suggest Parallels if you must use Windows. Use Office on the Mac side. Double-check that "Windows" requirement.
-Also can buy A Macbook Pro through payments?
Depends. What is your credit score?
Im taking Business Computer Applications, I dont own a credit card or i dont think i even have credit but ill see what i can do. But thanks anyways im you all responded.

It has HDMI so should be just fine, be sure to turn off any silly motion settings the TV offers.

  • I need to buy iwork

I need to buy iwork or office but i don't like the feel of office as much as iwork.
I need to buy it for school to view power points and make essays.
My question is: I want to buy iwork now for school but should I wait for iwork 07? Or does Apple provide any upgrade for ilife iwork .mac etc? Is there a date range that they will allow to upgrade?
    Thanks

    Asiago,
The powers that be frown on us using this forum for the dissemination of rumors. But I read this morning that iWork '07 will be released next month, and that the delay (it's historically released in January) was due to tidying up some features that are Leopard-specific.
I'd wait for this next version. Apple is notoriously stingy about upgrade paths.

    HI Friend,
I think Gift Cards found in iTunes can help you. You can give her a Gift Card as the same value as the app and then she can buy by herself.
PS.: I never made it before, so please have a look about this in iTunes for further information before the purchasing.
    Hope it will be helpful

  • Is iWork free for mac for buying a new iphone 5S

    Hello,
I have bought an iMac in august and an iphone 5S last week. I was able to download iWork for free for my iphone and my ipad 3. However, when I want to download iWork for my Mac it seems that I have to pay. I understood that iWork was free for buying a new idevice or mac. Could someone explain me if I can get iWork for my iMac and how?
    Thanks for your help.

iWork is only free for the device you have recently purchased. If you buy a new iOS device you can also install the iOS versions on your other compatible iOS devices you already own. However, this does not allow for free download of the OS X version of iWork. For that you would either need to already have previously purchased iWork '09, either from the Mac App Store or the earlier DVD, or bought a new Mac computer since 1 October (I think that's the date for eligibility).

If you have iWork 09, then the latest version should be available for free in the Mac App Store. If you have the new version on your iPad, then you'll need the new version on your Mac as well. The whole point of the latest version is that you can access and edit your files equally on iPad/iPhone, Mac, and also through the iCloud website.

  • If I buy iWork on my iPhone, will I be able to install that same iWork through my apple account onto an iPad and be able to use that full screen? Or do i have to pay for a iPad version of iWork, where the screen settings and other stuff are different?

I'd like to get iWork on both my ipad 2 and iphone 4 mainly for traveling purposes... Right now I lent my iPad to my dad whose in somewhere else now so I don't have access to the iPad. So, I was wondering if right now I buy iWork onto my iPhone, and then when the iPad comes home, can I install that same iWork I bought through my apple acout and not have to pay for another version, and the iPad iWork can go full screen beautifully and not ugly?

iWork is universal, so it will work full-res on the iPad. This is true for any app which has the plus sign symbol (in the App Store in iTunes it will say "This app is designed for iPhone and iPad".

  • I bought iWork family. Do I need to buy a app for iCloud too?

I bought iWork family. Do I need to buy a app for iCloud too?

No. You will not be able to work on documents that are stored in your iCloud.com account. You will able to download them from the cloud and revise them on your Mac. You don't need another app for that. You will need to buy the appropriate apps for the iDevices if you want to sync across all devices - Pages, Keynote and Numbers.
The documents will sync across all devices that are Set up to use iCloud. You need to set up iCloud on the Mac and your iDevices in order for the documents to sync across all devices. You must be running Lion 10.7.2 on the Mac to use all of the features of iCloud.

Please help me. i buy Ipad 2 and I couldn't find hole for Sim

If you've got the US Verizon model then it doesn't use a sim, it is CDMA based - and the wifi only model doesn't have a sim slot either. If it is 3G and takes a sim then if holding the iPad with the screen towards you, the slot should be on the left-hand side towards the top.
Edit : there is a picture of the slot, and how to open it, in chapter 1 of the manual which can be downloaded from here http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad
