Help! Bit of a first time here

Hi, My dear dear parents decided to buy me a brand new imac G5 for christmas and I like it very much.
However, I would like it even more if I could get t'internet on it.
Currently, my house has a PC with broadband provided by Wanadoo. It has an ADSL USB modem seperate from the computer.
Basically, I want to share this internet connection with my mac independently (so i can use it when the PC is switched off) and Im not really bothered about connecting them as a network.
The two computers are too far apart to connect them with a cable so I guess wireless is the only option. Iv been looking at something like this:
http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=ST580
But Im just unsure about whether it would work with the mac or not. I dont really want to spend a lot of money on Airport or whatever. Something in the above price range would be great.
Just need some advice.
Thanks
Jon

Sorry, Wrong board
Ill repost in the imac one

To buy in for delivery in Qatar, you should be starting from the Apple Qatar site:
    http://www.apple.com/qa/
Do you have an Apple-ID? if you do, then you should not have to enter your Address again, and may be able to sidestep the US Zip Code issue.

    First time here
One of my techs installed 2 SRW2048 switches fairly tightly to a wall, now the finance guy wants serial numbers for these units.
I'm not taking them out, so i thought i would check through the web browser and there it was Serial number but it was blank.
Is there something i am missing?

same with my net admin friend who's been complaining as well
even on a different switch, it doesnt indicate any serial number. guess the only way to check it is on the switch itself.

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
cannot change CPU Voltage??(first time here)

In Cell Menu you will find something like CPU VID / Over VID. The first will be set to Startup (=you CPU default volts) and the 2nd will be disabled but you can set them manually to CPU VID = 1.4 and OverVID to 3.3% / 5% etc to let the CPU use higher volts when Oc'd.  Good luck !

  • PLEASE HELP!!! First time user

    Can anyone PLEASE HELP me!!!
I am new to photoshop lightroom 3.5, infact I am new to photoshop and have never used it before in my life.  The very first time I installed LR 3.5 it gave me a screen where I must choose trial of full version, I chose trial, although I have the licence key.  It immediately gave me an message stating:  Unexpected error opening catalog...  What catalog, I have never used it before.
I uninstalled the program and even when to my regedit files and made sure lightroom is deleted there, or I think I got all of it.  Tried to reinstall it and just got the same message, but this time it did not even give me the option to type in my licence key.
I am using windows 7 basic.  PLEASE can you give me a step by step guide or instruction how to get it working?  PLEASE
    Thanks

If you have a license serial # you should use that. "Trial" means the software is good for 30 days and after that you can't use it anymore.
If you are a beginner it would be good for you to learn the basics of Lightroom by watching the excellent tutorials that Adobe has on their website.
    See here: http://tv.adobe.com/show/adobe-evangelists-julieanne-kost/
    and here: http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-lightroom-3/
    and here: http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-lightroom-3/
LR is a very demanding program with a steep learning curve. If you just jump into it you will only be frustrated.
But let me say one thing about "catalog". LR works with a data base where LR stores everything that is done in LR.  When you use LR for the first time a new catalog has to be built.
You do that by importing your images into LR. LR then builds the catalog. LR does not "see" image that are on the hard drive unless you import them. That is a very important principle in LR and you have to keep it in mind. I could say lots more about "catalog" but I fear that at this point it would only confuse you. So please watch the tutorials - they're very good insofar as you see on your screen what the instructor does in LR - so you learn hands on - much better than a book.

  • First time here..

    Hello Everyone
First time posting on this forum, have been looking through everything and man are you guys helpful!
Anyway, I am looking to finally back everything up. Currently I put all video and photos on an external lacie firewire drive, and all my itunes music is on an external ''My Book" usb drive.
I just purchased a 500gig My Book external to back up all my stuff, but after reading these forums, see that I would be better off with a firewire external HD. I also hear a lot about the SuperDuper app, but it looks like you have to have firewire to use that as well. I could only swing this 129.00 dollars for this ''My Book" but if that is useless than I will return and see what I can afford firewire - wise.
I also am hearing about ''time machine'' that is coming with Leopard.
So, I guess my questions are: Should I dump the new ''my book'' and get a Lacie Firewire? Should I purchase ''super duper'' or wait for ''time machine''? and also, what is the best way to backup in general and incremental updates?
btw...i have a lot of video, music, and photos on my mac and external hds. By lot, I mean thousands!
thanks so much for any and all advice and help.
    Jim

    Hi jctez;
I think you will be ahead of the game if you can exchange the USB disk for a Firewire one. Firewire on Mac is just so much better.
If you clone the drive with SuperDuper, the next time it does an incremental and only write what has changed so it is very quickly.
As far as Time Machine goes my plan is to continue with a clone using SD for disaster recovery because I know that a clone can get me back up and running with only a reboot. I am not so sure of exactly what Time Machine will do for you if your system disk decides to melt down. Until I know that I'll use both methods. Multiple backups are a good thing like a belt and suspenders.

  • Please help me publish for first time

hello. i am a newbie so be patient.
i just made my first site. but i can't figure out how to publish it. when i hit publish, it asks me to sign in by bringing up my system preferences. and nothing will ever happen after signing in.
i did publish to a folder, and was able to see it when iweb directed me directly to it, but i have no idea what the url is, or if this is even right.
    please help.
    asap.

Normally, when entering a password in for the first time, you are asked if you want to add it to your keychain.
There is a "New Password" command under the File menu in Keychain Access, but I don't know how to set it correctly for .mac.
I would suggest that you use the "Keychain First Aid" command in the Keychain Access menu and see if any problems show up.
Beyond that, I'd suggest searching this forum for "log in" or the like. I've seen issues like this mentioned before. Maybe there is a solution that I'm not remember.

  • I need help with the .xinitrc (first time arch user)

I just installed Arch on a virtual machine and i am following the beginner guide step by step.
I have reached the point that i enable gnome-session to start automatically when you invoke startx.
The guide says i need to add the line "exec ck-launch-session gnome-session" in the xinitrc file.
I tried doing this in the root account and the system just doesnt login to gnome. I tried doing it using the normal user and the files just disappears, and cannot be edited.
I looked around on the internet and found that typing startx /usr/bin/gnome-session startx gnome, but it doesnot replace startx or starts automatically.
this is my first time using arch and i would like help.
    Thank you.

You probably think the file "disappears" because .xinitrc is a "dot" file, which normally doesn't show up in an ls listing. Any file whose name begins with a '.' is a "hidden" file and generally doesn't show up in any listing. 'ls -a' to see it.
And please note that it is the file .xinitrc - ie, it begins with a period. This is the file that is looked for by X at start up.

  • Cannot change CPU Voltage??(first time here)

    Hi,
    My first post Here.
I've been trying to check the limits on my hardware after reading a lot of OC-guides.
    I have;
    K8N SLI Platinum (bios 3.7)
    3200+ Venice
    2 Gb Corsair 2*1024 CL2
    POV 7800GT
for the moment a Seagate 200 Gb EDI-disk.
    Tagan 580 W PSU
When trying to get my CPU over 2,5 GHz I wanted to raise the voltage from 1.4 BUT I cant.
Maybe I am doing some newbie-error or missed something obvious??? but I can not change it. Cannot find anything here about it either(maybe I'm just lousy to search).
I cannot go to that line in BIOS, it'a just a cross in front of that row.
Please, tell me I'm diong something wrong that is very easy to fix.
Maybe someone with the same hardwaresetup can tell me how much I can expect to OC this rig? some settings

Good luck !

  • First Timer Here Plz Help

ok i have never before used a mac computer. i ordered a MacBook 13.3"(hope thats not too small) with iWork pre-installed, Apple USB Modem for Dial up and the APP. Ok here are my questions
1/ i have all my itunes music, videos, and ringtones (from Vista) on 2 DVDs - Do i just simply insert the DVD and add the music? How do i get the purchased material to work?
2/I've heard i can bluetooth my iphone to the MacBook and send SMS from it. Is this true and how do u do it if so?
3/How do i transfer my other files to my MacBook. i can use DVD but rather not have to. What about Direct Connection with a Ethernet cable? How does that work.
4/I cant find any virus protection for the MacBook. With my Vista i have two Virus protections and viruses still leak through. Does this happen on Macs?
5/I was also wondering if there was any tips any one has that they can give to me.
    *Thanks in Advance*

    Hi there,
you should not need to install any software from your ISP. on the mac, go to:
    applications>internet connect
    click the Internal Modem tab
you will need to enter a dial up number, account name and user password.
re: virus protection, you probably wont need it on a mac using dial up. but if you must, try ClamXav:
    http://www.clamxav.com/
re: music, if you purchased music with iTunes on your PC - after you transfer the files you need to authorize the mac to play them. you can use up to 5 computers for iTunes purchased songs with DRM, and iTunes will prompt you automatically when you try to play them.
    hope this helps a bit.

  • Ah first time here, plz help! Flash / Premiere

Ok, I have been using Flash since way back. I'm now in CS5 and need a solution for this and since I have the CS5 master Suite I would think Premiere can do this following scenerio.
I have a flash presentation, the client needs me to add a voiceover track to the existing animation but the voiceover needs to be edited to fit. I need a solution where I can see the swf, add the voiceover.mp3 and edit accordingly.
Once I do this I woudl have to export the edited audio as an .mp3 and drop it in the .fla of the presentation.
Can this be done in Premiere and is there a tute for something like this?
    any help plz?
    thx
    rd

Very glad that all worked for you.
Though I do not know it, it appears that Cubase probably has issues, such as I suspect with Audition. The choice of DAW is up to what the user has available.
PrPro has pretty good Audio-editing capabilities already, and when it falls short, I just reach for Audition (have not really put the newer versions of SoundBooth to a test, so cannot comment on any limitations there), even if I do an Export for a reference file for the Video. Keeping things in one program has many benefits, and usually saves a lot of time and effort.
Now, if SmartSound would just do their Sonicfire Pro 5 to work within PrPro CS5, like they did with FCP! That would save me a lot of reference Video file Exports, when scoring. They claim that it's in the works, but I have not seen anything new, on that front, for quite awhile.
Good luck, and thanks for reporting your success!
    Hunt
PS - one of the biggest issues with MP3 source material, is when there are other "things" inside the MP3's, like album art, etc. Nice that yours worked fine.

  • First Time Here... iMac Dual Chip is My New Child

Hi guys.. first post even though I've had an iBook G4 for over a year.. no problems which led me to the new iMac.. Tired of shutting down windows and having devdlr files hang, loud fans, hot power adapters all over the floor, and have been having a great time unplugging it to sell on eBay.. haven't had any problems yet (knock on my head) but if I do, I know where to come.
Been using Lightroom (beta), Office X, Photoshop CS2, and all have been running real smooth.. Haven't gotten into iPhoto yet, but my wife will dig it.
    Quick question...
If I set up my iPhoto library, log out, and log in as my wife, will she have the same setup or will I have to set it up twice. I have all my pics on a 250GB WD Firewire. Thanks in advance.

To your question, I believe you'd have to keep updating the iPhoto Library data. It would reference back to the external files (as long as you don't select copy into iphoto library), but you'd still have to keep the files in the iPhoto Library folder updated on the second account, so it would know about the new pictures and whanot.
Saw your signature said 512MB of memory. You'll notice so much speed improvement, if you add just a little bit. I bought my memory from Other World Computing, and it works great. I normally get crucial, but it was a lot cheaper.

I would not remove the device at all while it tells you not to disconnect - this can cause serious problems for you. It is better to disconnect the unit properly by clicking the eject button and awaiting comfirmation that it has been disconnected. You can also stop this 'notice' from appearing by changing your iPod options.

  • Help for a future first time Macintosh and Airport express buyer

I'm planning on buying a Macbook (my first Macintosh) and am also interested in buying an Airport express mainly for the ability to stream music to my home stereo. My question is regarding the best and easiest way to incorporate this into the setup I already have.
I currently have verizon DSL (PPPoE) with my DSL modem connected to a wireless Linksys 802.11b router which is attached by ethernet cable to a Dell desktop. I have a PC laptop that I connect to the network by wireless card.
My main goals are to to be able to share files, a printer, and be able to stream music from my desktop PC (where all my music is stored) to my home stereo. To do that, can I just swap the Linksys router with the airport express? Or should I leave the setup that I have and just connect the airport express to my stereo system?
I appreciate any advice you can provide. Thanks.

Since the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) only has one Ethernet port, you won't be able to swap it for the Linksys router and still provide wired access to your Dell desktop.
The least expensive route would be to keep your current network configuration as is, except add the AX as a wireless client to provide sharing your USB printer and to stream iTunes. (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302153)
A better route (for performance) would be to swap your Linksys for an AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and, again, use the AX as either a wireless client or extend your wireless network so that you can have Internet connectivity in another room in the house. The AEBS (like the AX) uses the 802.11g standard.
