Help! Black printing from Colour cartridge

I just bought a HP Deskjet 6840 and I'm having trouble printing in black. When i do this, the black colour looks opaque/greyish. I tried changing the paper type in the printer preferences in illustrator, but for some reason it doesn't let me select "inkjet paper". I also found out after checking my ink levels that my printer prints black images from the colour cartridge. How can I change this? I'm totally confused!
Thanx in advance.

It sounds like you may need to review the print settings beyond paper type. Make sure you are using an RGB color mode (File>Document Color Mode>RGB) & that you're not using any settings for CMYK or Process Color printing. You may also have to turn Color Management off in the Print dialog box.
If you're sure the settings are correct & still have a problem, HP should be able to help you.

  • How can I print in black when the colour cartridge is empty

    Hi,
    I have an HP Photosmart 5510 that I use ONLY for simple black on white printing for work.  I have it set to black ink only but today, a wet and cold Sunday night when I really really need the d*mned thing to work because it's month end and I have to send copies of all my worksheets to head office, I get an error message to the effect that it won't allow me to print using the brand spankin' new original HP black cartridge until I buy some totally unwanted colour cartridges to keep it company.
    Am I really being held to ransom like this?  Are Hewlitt Packard so short of cash that their corportate monolith will falter and fall if I don't buy expensive consumables whose only function is to print in colours I have no wish or need to use?
    Am I really unable to use the black print facility on *MY* printer until I've fed yet more cash into the greedy maw of some US blue chip company?
    If the answer to any of the above is yes then tomorrow evennig after work I shall have to go to the store where I bought my HP printer and very publically tell them were to shove it and why.  I shall seek out a new printer  from ANY MANUFACTURER OTHER THAN HP that allows me to print in black only and I shall make it a mission to spread the word.
    Of course it's entirely possible that HP have a simple fix that will allow me to use black cartridges only in which case I shall be delighted to continue buying original HP black cartridges on a monthly basis.
    On the other hand I do need a reply urgently because as I say, it's Sunday night and this problem has put me hours behind for work tomorrow as it is.
    Thanks  (I hope).

    Hi,
    Firstly I'd like to say: I'm not working for any computer vendor, both hardware and software. From my understanding, the technology to make those inject printers dictates why we need all inks to print when we only need black.
    1. On some printers which ONLY use 2 ink cartridges (black & tri-color) we can print black only if the tri-color cartridge still has ink at least one color
    2. For many other printers which have individual color ink cartridges we need all of them to print even we only print black only. Printers may stop during the warming up process.
    3. For some printers, we can force them to print black only without ink in one color cartidge but this would more damage than good because this will shorten their lives.
    One thing I've mentioned few times. Vendors (all of them) should allow users to SCAN without inks. But as mentioned above, printers may stop during the warming up process and first of all THEY ARE PRINTERS.
    Regards.

  • Printer prints from photo cartridge

    I have a 7520 with plenty of ink in the black cartridge.  The photo cartridge is empty because I realize now that when printing documents the printer has been using and still wants to us the ink from the photo cartridge. Now when I print something it is blank. I have checked the settings on my computer and the printer and cannot figure out how to get the printer to print from the black cartridge.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
    Select "Black Ink Only" from Grayscale option printer will use black ink only. If select Grayscale or colors to prin B&W, printer needs to use photo ink. Please note: You still need all ink cartridges when print Black ink Only. The setup may vary from printer to printer but basically (for Windows):
    (a) Double click printer icon on desktop,
    (b) Click Set Preferences,
    (c) Click Advanced,
    (d) Select "Black Ink only" for Print in Grayscale
    (e) Click Apply/Ok ...

  • Please help with printing from Thinkpad

    I've spent the last couple of days reviewing similar posts, and tried suggestions within with no success. Here's my problem:
    I have an older iMac running 10.3.9 wirelessly connected to the internet with an Airport Extreme I picked up about a year ago. Recently I decided to run my printer through the Airport. My Mac found the printer with no problem, and prints just fine.
    I also have an IBM ThinkPad, running Windows XP. I have no trouble, after initial setup headaches, getting the ThinkPad to find the network and get online, but I can't print from the ThinkPad.
    I used Bonjour to find the printer, an hp deskjet 940c, and the setup seemed to work. (I used the manufacturer's disk for the driver.) But everytime I try to print I get: "this document failed to print" error message. The ThinkPad is connected to the network and online.
    I also wish the ThinkPad could find the iMac. Is this wishful thinking?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Dear snaggl2th,
    Try this
    pageFormat = pf
    g = g2
    g.translate((int)pageFormat.getImageableX(),(int)pageFormat.getImageableY());
    int wPage = (int)pageFormat.getImageableWidth();
    int hPage = (int)pageFormat.getImageableHeight();
    g.setClip(0,0,wPage,hPage);Hope it helps

  • Black Ink Printing from Photo Cartridge Only

    I've had the Photosmart Premium for about 6 months now and while it does a great job it prints black from the photo cartridge only.  I've replaced it several times already and have not printed that many photos.  Most of my printing is text only.  I have looked at the settings, changed the settings, etc. multiple times and still can't get it fixed. Please help!!

    If you are printing on plain paper make sure plain paper is selected in the paper/quality settings.  The pigmented black ink sill not be used for printing when photo paper is selected.

  • Change from black print to colour

    HP Photosmart 7510 e-printer.  How do I switch from regular black/white text printing to using a colour option, because the 'pentagon' symbol blacktext  ink uses up very quickly, so whilst I wait for new supplies, I would like to print out in a colour (whichever shows the most ink available). There is the black 'bow-tie' symbol photo ink, but I am not sure if this black would 'take over' when the regular black '5th'  cartridge runs out. I have the printer set to fast draft to save on ink but it runs out too fast. Thanks

    As long as the Color settings are not set the use "black ink only" in the color settings, the printer should be using color as it print to assist in creating a sharper black image. I think what  you are asking is if the printer can print in back up/reserve mode. that is where when a cartridge runs out, it can be removed and the other cartridge then continues to print. Your printer having individual ink cartridges (IIC) cannot do that. The printers that have that ability are the printers that just have the two cartridges which are the black and tri-color.
    "For users who wish to print utilizing just black ink (despite the reduced print quality), many HP printers offer options. For example, a driver color setting (by selecting "print in grayscale with the black cartridge only" in printing preferences) specifies printing using only black ink. In addition, many IPH printers can operate in "reserve mode," which allows the user to continue to print with just the black cartridge when the color cartridge is removed or not installed. In HP IIC systems, all supplies are required to be installed in the printer for the printer to function." (Source:http://h10060.www1.hp.com/pageyield/en-019/articles/howInkIsUsed.html?cCode=us)

    Diagnostic printout confirms no black, but it prints the black text on the diagnostic page OK. I have 2 unused cartridges that both do the same thing.

    I would suspect the cartrdiges  - the diagnostc page will print black text using the color cartrdige if necessary.  Try printing the diagnostic page with the color cartridge removed, you will probably get a blank page.  Try gently blotting the printhead on a damp tissue.  A good cartridge will leave a strong black streak on the tissue.  If it is a weak smudge the cartridge is the issue.
    If the cartridge blot leaves a strong black mark then check the diagnostic page.  For a working black cartrdige line 61 and 66 should be 0, please report on lines 63, 64, 65 and 67.
    If line 66 is not 0 then try cleaning the cartrdige contacts.  Also check the x-bais spring and make sure it has not become dislodged as shown here.  If the x-bias spring has been dislodged then check and make sure the flex circuitry has not been damaged as shown in the picture. If the flex is damaged your printer will require service.

  • F4500 - force print from other cartridge

    SO I keep getting messages that my black ink is low. But my color ink cartridge is full. So how can I get my printer to use up that color ink?
    The message box only says "to continue printing with black....or click cancel".
    I can't find it on any support pages, and when I check the ink cartridge info there is - unbelieveably - no place to click to change the setting.

  • Help with printing from an array

    hello there, looking for help. Basically i have read a text file into an array. I can print a sentence from the array using startsWith()...if i take that code out, and just put in the last part:
    while(!(words.trim()).startsWith("slightly")) {
         System.out.println(i + ":" + words[i] + ":");
         i++;
    this basically prints out the whole text file until it reaches the word slightly. I want to print out text that is in between two words. Now i can stop printing with this , any suggestions on how i can tell it to start printing when it finds a word....
    public static void main( String[] args )
         int i = 0;
    // will store the words read from the file
    List<String> wordList = new ArrayList<String>();
    BufferedReader br = null;
    try
    // attempt to open the words file
    br = new BufferedReader( new FileReader( "ireland.txt" ) );
    String word;
    while( ( word = br.readLine() ) != null )
    // add the read word to the wordList
    wordList.add( word );
    } catch( IOException e ) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    } finally {
    try {
    // attempt the close the file
    br.close();
    catch( IOException ex ) {
    ex.printStackTrace();
    String[] words = new String[ wordList.size() ];
    // wordList to our string array words
    wordList.toArray( words );
    System.out.println(" Returning line ");
    // loop and display each word from the words array
    /*while(i < words.length )
         String tempWord = words[i].trim();
         //area
         if (tempWord.startsWith("'''Loc"))
              System.out.println(i+":"+ words[i]+":" );
         i++;

  • 1)   should this be connected to the router to work?  2) if connected, it interferes with other PCs on the network, and 3) should this help me print from my mac?

    not familiar with macs.    whenever the airport express is connected to my router, it messes up connectivity for my PC..  bought this to be able to print to a canon pixma mp6120.  will it work for that?

    How is the express connected to your router? It does have to be connected if you intend to print through it.
    The best method of connection is ethernet to WAN port of the express.. assuming a new one. The worst method is wireless. When you do wireless connection it can mess up other computers. So my recommend is to test with ethernet even if the printer is not nearby and see if the problem goes away.
    The Express has to be bridged.. and has to be setup to create a wireless network in this setup..
    Post screenshots from the airport utility if you cannot get it to work.
    The express will enable you to print over the network to a printer plugged in by USB.. mostly!! It is far from foolproof.. it is also limited in lots of ways.. ie print only in one direction.. no info from the printer will get back to the computer. It is a poor way to do things..
    You should return the express and buy a wireless printer.. that is far better solution to your problem. Printers remember are cheap.. it is the ink  or toner that costs heaps.

  • HI, im looking for some help to print from an interactive PDF.

    I have created a page turn pdf by importing a swf file and exporting that as an interactive PDF, which works well on screen. I now need to make the file printable - and when i try this only the page on screen shows in print preview - i can't print every page (it sees it a single page pdf) are there options around this? I thought maybe adding a button with an 'open file' action and linking that to a  standard pdf file - but its not working when i export. Any suggestions on how i can achieve what i need?
    essentially a a PDF with page turning and live html links, that the user can print to create a booklet.
    thanks

    A lot of people are experiencing it, which suggests that Apple is having issues. If that is the case all people can do is wait it out.

  • Colour cartridges suddenly not recognised

    From time to time my printer decides it will not recognise the colour cartridge any longer.  I use 75xl.  This is despite the cartridge having worked perfectly up until that point, and definitely not being empty.  I take it out & put it back in and the messages alternate between the cartridge being incompatible, or missing.  When this has occurred previously I have put in a new cartridge and it's resumed working.  I then put the old cartridge it previously woulrn't recognise back in & away it goes until the next time.  It's just happened again, after successfully printing a couple of pages.  I put my spare cartridge in and it wont recognise that either now.  As there is a missing cartridge it wont print at all.  not even in black & white.  I've really had it with this printer, and the lack of support from HP.  My printer is out of warranty, but still printing/scanning/ photocopying just fine .. when it will recognise the colour cartrigde.  any ideas??  Or should i just go & buy another brand printer?

    Hi Anthea White,
    I'm sorry you are having issues with the print recognizing colour cartridges.   There is actually circuitry between the ink cartridges and the circuitry in the printer.  I'm attaching a document that describes how to clean these electrical contacts.  Sometimes ink or dust prevents a connection from being made.
    I hope this will help you!

  • I can't print from iPad 2 to my AirPrint enabled printer

    Hi, I'd be grateful for some help on printing from Ipad 2. I have a compatible printer (HP - B210A) and my iPhone 4 picks it up and prints perfectly, as does my PC. However, I cannot get my iPad 2 to find the printer. As far as I can see the process for printing from iPhone 4 and iPad 2 are identical but only one works. Does anybody have any suggestions please?

    Np2-
    Your iPad 2 might be defective.  An Apple Store Genius should be able to check it for you, and will replace it on the spot if it doesn't work right.
    You might try resetting the network settings on the iPad.  See Settings - General - Reset - Reset Network Settings.
    Although far-fetched, is it possible your iPad is connected to a different WiFi base station than you think?  I've had that happen, and had to go to Settings - WiFi - (Click on the WiFi Network's blue arrow) - Forget This Network, and then select the correct network. This could easily happen if you and your neighbor both have the same WiFi name!
