Help burning DVD with Disk Utility

I have a Mac Mini with a SuperDrive.
System Profiler confirms that I can write a DVD-R:
But Disk Utility won't let me burn a DVD. With a brand spanking new blank DVD-R in the drive, it says "Write Ability: Read Only":
What's the problem, and how do I burn my .dmg disk image?
Mac Mini Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Eject the disk.
In disk Utility, select the disk image file and click the burn button.
A drop down window should appear and ask for a blank disk. Insert the disk.
Soon the window should change and show burn options, and the burn button at the bottom right should turn blue. Choose any options you need and click the blue burn button.

  • When burning iso with disk utility, the audio is off!

I have an ISO file that works fine when I mount it or watch it on VLC.   If I burn it using windows (in parallels) it is fine...
But when I burn it with disk utility, the audio is off by a second or so.  I can't figure this out since it is a disk image.  there shouldn't be a way to dissociate the audio.  I did have a previous version of the iso file that was off..  Is it possible that I am trying to burn an iso file and it is burning a mounted version from before (even though I am choosing this from the finder?)
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
I though macs just work.  Seems a bit more complicated.

I don't recall for sure about "disk utility" and DVD and/or Bluray. It seems to me that Toast is usually used.

  • Burning .iso with Disk Utility (Mac)?

Anyone doing this? I read it can be done but I just tried and it didn't work.
It's been a long 72 hours or so trying different ways to get my 82-minute 3D feature to various bluray permutaions (i.e. side by side, red-cyan, and of course, 2D) (saving the MVC multiplexing for another day).
Anyway, I was hoping I could just make an .iso image in Encore and then burn multiple copies with Disk Utility. Some sources say it can be done, but it didn't work on my 10.8 iMac. Thanks, all!

  • HT2087 Burning an ISO on a DVD with disk utility

I'm trying to use Disk Utility to burn an ISO file on a DVD. When I drag the icon to the disk utility window I can't drop it there. Is there something else I need to do? I've tried a number of different approaches and the ISO file is always greyed out when I try to burn it.

See if Disk Utility can mount it.
Try changing the extension from .iso to .dmg

  • Problem burning disc with Disk Utility

I made a DVD in iDVD. I checked to see how big the project was and I had only used 1.2G or the 4G available. I then did "save as disc image" to my desktop. After that was completed, which took over 2 hours, I tried to use Disk Utility to burn a DVD. When I insert the DVD it says there is not enough space available. I then check my project in iDVD and the line that tells the amount of space used is completely red (all used up and over). I completely shut down iDVD and reopen and the project is back at the 1.2G size. It's a relatively small project so I'm fairly sure that it really is 1.2 and not over the limit.
I tried this procedure twice to make sure there was enough space when I start the whole process.
In the very beginning I tried to burn the project within iDVD. It burned and ejected but the screen didn't reflect that it had finished and did not ask if I wanted to burn another disc. The screen said it was still finishing the burn. The disc had ejected and it played just fine on my t.v. The only problem with this way is that I need to make lots of copies of this and having to force quit and start again makes every disc take approx. 2-1/2 hours each.

Evidently I'm not understanding what you are asking.
When I'm in iDVD I go under Project and click
"Project Info". Project Duration is 36:01 minutes.
In DVD Capacity it says 1.0 GB of 4.2 GB is being
used. I thought that was what you were wanting.
Thank you for your help. If you could tell me where
to look for the info you want I will do it promptly.
The Project Information probably doesn't include the DVD-ROM contents you want to include (and it's only a poor guess at what will be actually needed).
If your project is 36 minutes, I would expect it to actually require over 2 GB of DVD space with either 'Best Performance' or 'Best Quality' selected.
It was my understanding at the start that you HAD created a disk image file on your hard drive of your iDVD project. Is this true? This WOULD include the DVD-ROM area if things went well. I am asking you to tell me the actual size of this disk image file (click on it to select it and then select File>Get Info).
I suspect the size of the DVD-ROM area you want to create is causing your problems. Are all the digital images you want to include in the DVD-ROM area in one folder? If so, what is the size of this folder (click on it to select it and then select File>Get Info)?

  • Backup of Leopard Install DVD with disk utility

I'm in the process of saving a disk image from the Leopard Install DVD, but I'd like to be sure I did it right by selecting the Leopard Install partition on the sidebar in Disk Utility, rather than the drive itself. I did so because when I tried it with the drive itself it offered a default name as the name of my dvd drive "Matshita" rather than anything specific to the disk.
I'd also like to be sure the windows drivers are there, so before I waste an hour burning and tossing the result, the question is do I select the drive or the partition to image?

Run the disk utility and select the disk and then select New Image. You will create and image on your desktop.
I used cdr rather than dmg.
I also used Toast8 to burn the image to a DVD
Be sure you are using a dual-layer DVD and your burner supports it.
I successfully burned a backup this way, and yes, it does contain the Windows drivers as well as Leopard.

  • BURN DVD Using Disk Utility not Bootable

I have downloaded TechTool Deluxe for Intel and PPC. Following instructions in Disk Utility, I made/Burned DVD's of each .dmg for Power PC & Intel based computers.
Neither DVD will boot on computers using OS 10.5.6. The PPC DVD has OS 10.4.4 and the Intel has OS 10.4.5. I have tried restart using System Preferences, the "C" key, and "Option".
Can someone tell me how to boot from the DVD's or tell me what I may have done incorrectly?
    Bud

There must be some misunderstanding here.
It is the TechTool CD that must boot. If an operating system was installed on the CD via Disk Utility Burn then it should start up on that CD. It does not, even though it will show up in System Preferences/Startup Disk and "Options". I see it as a matter of how Apple installs the .dmg onto the CD as a legitimate startup disk.
All my computers work fine with 10.5.6 or lesser for older machines. The purpose of Techtools for me is to assure that they continue to do so.
The reason for a second G5 is that the first one had an LED light "on" on the logic board making it somewhat inoperable. The second machine comes clean. 10.5.X was installed nicely.

  • Help -- backup data with disk utility, input/output error.

My problem started when my MacBook Pro computer (with OsX) froze.  When I restarted, the startup screen stayed on for a long time.  Now, the startup screen stays on for a few seconds and then shuts off.  I do NOT have a recent backup of my data.  I have tried the following:
Went onto the recovery partition, used Disk Utility.  When I verified the disk, it said it needed repair.  When I tried to repair the disk, it said it could not be repaired.
I then tried to copy a disk image of the hard drive onto my external hard drive, but it says there is an "input/output error" and won't allow it.  How else can I backup files on my computer at this point?

Had issue partitioning 2TB my passport drive, got input/output error while using disk utility.
Here is what I did to get my external disk back
    In Disk Utility
    1) Try to use erase option first, it failed
    2) Try to partition the disk, failed as well.
    3) Then try erase option again, then ...   it worked !!

  • Best format to burn with disk utility?

Can anyone suggest the best video format(s) to use if I want to burn a video file to DVD using disk utility, (if there's even a difference) and secondly, if I need to make a DVD (best quality possible) that auto plays when inserted, will Roxio Toast or some other program give me better results than IDVD, or should I not waste the money?
    Thanks for any help.
    IMAC - OSX 10.4.11

Unless Toast has improved significantly, iDVD does a better job encoding.
On the other hand, Toast does a bunch of other useful things (like allow you to use R/W disks) that it is a worth while investment.

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • Help with Disk Utility

I have a removable usb flash drive that I've been using for a while. Occasionally I need to erase it with disk utility to remove all of the past information it has held. This time around though the drive doesn't seem to be created (I'm not sure if I'm saying that the right way or not).
    I've included a photo here:
    http://northeasternxposure.com/help/drive.png
Normally there is the "983.0 MB VBTM . . ." drive with the "UNTITLED" one below it. As you can see the "UNTITLED" drive doesn't look like a drive, but has the icon of a document. And at the bottom it shows the capacity, yet none of it is available. This is why it won't mount. I've tried to redo it multiple times with no luck. Hopefully someone knows a setting or something that I should change to repair this problem.

I went into Finder and it could still see the drive, yet not access it for some reason. So what I did was log out and then back in and everything was working fine again. I've got no idea why that problem had occurred, but thanks for the quick responses.
And I always do remember to mark helpful and solved. Thanks!
