Help! Can I recover Disk Utility erased files?

Hi guys,
Yesterday I was trying to install Leopard because I had software problem that made my ibook get stuck on the loading screen.
Anyway, I was on my last step before it started to install when I got a message saying that I didn't have enough disk space to install the CD. I had just 2.7 GB available and the system required 11 GB. After trying to figure out what to do, I saw the Installer Menu Bar, clicked Open *Disk Utility*, clicked on Erase window, then clicked on one of the drives I saw on the left window. I didn't choose the 27.9 GB TOSHIBA disk, but the one under.
Then from the Volume Format drop-down menu, I selected Mac OS Extended, and selected security option: "Don't Erase Data". Finally, on the right pane of the Disk Utility window, I clicked the Erase tab., and suddenly I had 27 GB available
I thought that this “Erase” option just deleted previous deleted files, but not my whole hard disk.
Then I went back to the install window, and clicked “Install"...knowing that I maybe lost all my data.
I have tried to find my pictures and documents, but they are no where to find.
Have I lost all my data? Is it possible to get it recovered?
Please help me!
Thanks in advance!

sorry, but you are too far into this in order to be able to recover much. Data Rescue II or File Salvage are 2 decent utilities but you then installed software on top of your drive. This is assuring that a huge chunk of that drive is gone forever.
what disk utility meant was that it wouldn't securly delete the data - that is write stuff on top of it. you did just a basic delete / format which deletes the info containing pointers to the files, not the actual files themselves.
but installing OS X after that is going to permanatley delete 11GBs or so of data.
you will need an external drive to even begin this process & there's no garuntee it will work. you can try data rescue for free to see if it finds anything, as file salvage does too.
at this point, it's a shot in the dark.
ALWAYS keep backups & NEVER erase a drive with such important info.

Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.

I don't know, but I doubt it can be done using Disk Utility. I suggest you consult the user manual for it or see if there is a Reset option in the onscreen menues. If you don't have a manual, then you will find one at http://support.apple.com/manuals.

  • Disk utility/erase and lost HD free space

    HELP!
In an attempt to clear up space from deleted files I ran the disk utility>erase>erase free space>35-Pass erase deleted files programme. Then did verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions.
Iv now dropped from 7.8GB of free space to 1.8 of free space on the HD. So that things aren't working right. Plus, I can't download music that I bought on iTunes because there isn't enough space on the HD.
How do I get all that space back? What did I do wrong?
All I was doing was trying to free up space from deleted files that Iv been getting rid of. I know that when you delete from one portion of the HD it doesn't always delete it totally off the system only the portion where you're looking at it.

  • Disk Utility - Erase Free Space-what does it really do?

    Hey Forum,
I am using mac os 10.6.4 on my macbook and i have a doubting question for quite sometimes, what does disk utility erase free space feature really do? Does it gives you more free space? or what? I know it prevents the recovery of deleted files but i want to know what more it does and do not do? Like, now my hdd free space kept increasing and decreasing, by a few 100 mbs or 50mbs etc, so do i erase free space so to solve this problem? Ok, i do not only want to know does it solve the previous problem, but also the questions stated in the whole long paragraph i have wrote. If you know anything related to disk utility's erase free space, feel free to tell me!
Pls help me, I need you guys' help!
    Thank you.
    Regards
    Ala.

Erase free space simply writes zeros over the space occupied by deleted files to prevent data recovery. That's all it does. It does not give you extra disk space.
Your disk space goes up and down a bit because the system creates temporary files and logs which take up space, such as the Safari cache. You can clear these file using a utility like Onyx (which is free)

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • Network Installer: Can't run Disk Utility

    Hi, all.
Just created a net install image. SIU's log did not report anything out of the ordinary, however for some reason I can't run Disk Utility, and I need to as the automated installation options frequently don't work.
I select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and nothing happens.
I run the Terminal and try hdiutil and get
    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib
    Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Versions/A/DiskImages
    Reason: image not found
    Trace/BPT Trap
Now, if we mount that image on a running Mac we can see the following
    bash$ ls -l /usr/lib/libbz*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138436 Nov 1 11:33 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.2.dylib
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138444 Mar 4 10:19 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
If we run the same command on the netbooted machine
    bash# ls -l /usr/lib/libbz*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 138436 Nov 1 11:33 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.2.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.1.0.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Nov 29 14:50 /usr/lib/libbz2.dylib -> libbz2.1.0.3.dylib
So it looks like libbz2.1.0.dylib is symlink'd to libbz2.1.0.3.dylib, except libbz2.1.0.3.dylib doesn't exist in the netbooted image. But it does exist in the image when it isn't netbooted! Yes, they are the same image!
I also have two "Help" menus, just for kicks.
Does anybody know what's going on? I guess I'll re-create the image, but it'd be nice to understand what's going on and know if it's something I can somehow avoid in the future.
On the lighter side, this is the first time in nearly a year I haven't had to manually insert the CoreVideo.framework to get the image to boot!

Ah, forget what I said about it being the same image. I didn't notice that my chroot hadn't worked when I was checking... I was checking the live system instead. Good thing, too, 'cause that was just TOO weird.
Still doesn't explain why there's a link to a non-existent file. To test I created a symlink for libbz2.1.0.3.dylib which just points at the previous version. Guess what: Disk Utility works now.
I'm re-creating the image anyway and we'll see if the problem exists on that one as well. If it does, I won't be pleased. That'll be two repeatable bugs that break the NetInstall function for me in a year. Not cool.
Anybody else getting weird output if they type hdiutil in to Terminal at the Network Installer? Or do you have a non-working Disk Utility?

  • After Server Administration Software for 10.6.8 install on my mac- Now I can't use Disk Utility ?

I installed ServerAdministrationSoftware for 10.6.8 on my mac- NOW I can't use Disk Utility - get Dyld Error Message:   Library not loaded: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PlatformHardwareManagement.framework/Versions /A/PlatformHardwareManagement? Also, the only reason I installed this was for the Workgroup Monitor which kicks out the same error.
    Any help would be appreciated!

FireFox can't open lots of files it isn't suposed to. DMG is opened by the Mac osx as a virtual volume file you just drag the FireFox icon to where you want it installed. Check your desktop for a FireFox volume... like a drive. Double click the DMG file if it is not there. This is how Mac works it has nothing to do with FireFox, many apps install this way!

  • Tip on How to Monitor Disk Utility Erase Free Space

When you use the Disk Utility Erase Free Space option, it can sometimes appear to hang and the progress bar isn't always a help.
By accident, I discovered that if you run the Activity Monitor and select Disk Usage, you can in fact monitor progress. The Space Free will gradually tick down, sometimes as slowly as 100K/sec, then when it hits zero, it will quicklt tick back up. If you observe this, just let Disk Utility complete to avoid any issues; Activity Monitor makes it easier to be patiet about this.
    Hope this helps.

Great tip, thanks for the post!

  • Can't get disk utility to work with leopard - iBook running super slow

I have an iBook G4 and it's running ssuuppeerr slow but I can't get disk utility to come up after I press C down. I don't know if I'm pressing it at the wrong time but I restart with the C pressed and it gets to the apple screen and it won't go anywhere else. It will restart normally but not with the C key. I've been trying for an hour and I can't get it to get to disk utility!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you want Disk Utility on your iBook or do you want Disk Utility on your install disc?
For Disk Utility on your iBook, go to Finder>Applications>Utilities and look in the Utilities folder. You will find Disk Utility there, and drag it to your dock where it will be handy to have it.
For Disk Utility on your install disc, insert the install disc and then restart and hold down "C" as you boot up so that you will boot from the install disc. Then choose your language, and then look for Disk Utility in the menu bar--I don't remember if it says "Utilities" or "Disk Utility". If you need to repair your startup disk (i.e. your internal hard drive), you would boot up from the install disc to do this.
However, I am wondering if you have enough RAM to run Leopard. You will get a big boost in performance if you max out your RAM. Leopard will run best if you can put a 1 GB RAM stick in your RAM slot.
If you want to repair permissions after installing and updating Leopard, you can do this with Disk Utility on your iBook. Repair permissions until there is nothing left to repair.
If you have more questions, please post back. Also, which ibook G4 do you have?
    Good luck!

  • Killed Disk Utility Erase Free Space. Now 0 available

(I erroneously posted this earlier to the Safari forum; posting here again)
I ran Disk Utility "Erase free space" on my iMac G5 250GB boot drive (I had about 130GB free). It ran for about 50 minutes, and got to "creating temp file" and then seemed to hang (thermometer didn't move for 20 minutes). So I force killed it. It seems to have left that "temp file" that takes up all available space since Disk Utility now reports 0 bytes available (and MS Entourage says insufficient free space and exits). I ran Finder "Secure empty trash" to delete 57 files with no error. But Disk Utility still says 0 bytes available.
First Aid "Verify Disk" reports no problems. "Verify Permissions" reports no problems.
Is there a way to regain my available space?
    Thanks,
    Ken

Restart did it. Thanks very much.

Lastly is there a way you can remotely access the files on the time capsule? (he would like to remotely access files on the time capsule).
    thank you.
you should be able to use Back to my Mac to access the time capsule correct?

I want to give away or sell a 6500/250 running 7.6.1. How can the hard disk be erased so that the data are gone, not recoverable? thanks, LifeisRich

I'd recommend that you check for Mac User Group(s) in Orange County.  That's where you'd likely find a diehard Mac fanatic who might want to add your 6500 to his/her collection.  Even if you got nothing for it, it would be better than e-cycling it.  I upgraded my 6500/275 with what was a "large" hard drive at the time (15 GBs), maxed the memory at 128 MBs, installed the 512K L2 cache card, a better ATI Rage Pro PCI graphics card, a USB PCI card, and an internal 56K modem.  With it running OS 9.1, it did all of the pre-OS X stuff I needed it to do.  As I previously mentioned, it's a nice-sounding MP3 player.  Internet Explorer 5.1.7 (the final release from 2001) kept it useful for surfing the web up until 2005, when it became too outdated/incompatible with many web sites.  Unfortunately, the demands of the internet and the need for a modern browser, as well as faster processing to digest it all, are what retired many older Macs from active duty.  So my (2) 6500s and (3) 6400s (same tower design) sit in storage.  There is one concern that I'll pass along: The motherboard has a 4.5-volt alkaline battery, that's a small, black plastic cube, secured in place by velcro.  If your 6500 has been disconnected from electricity for a long time, the battery will undoubtedly be dead.  Unlike the many Apple computers that used a small ½AA lithium battery (that I've never seen leak when completely dead), the 6500's battery can and usually does start leaking.  Because the motherboard sits vertically oriented on its side edge when installed, the leaking battery will drip alkaline solution down the board, corroding any components in it path.  I've seen motherboards ruined from this.  If you're going to give it away or sell it, you might want to pull the motherboard (remove the two machine screws on the rear I/O panel, next to the pull tabs).  Slide out the board and unplug the battery's small connector (has red & black wires), then lift up on the battery, while holding down the "toothed" velcro mount with something non-conductive, like a popsicle stick.  Once it's free, dispose of the battery.  If you're interested, a replacement can be purchased for about $5-$7 from battery specialty retailers - it's a Rayovac 870 or 871.  Even if you don't replace it, removing one that will eventually leak is a good idea, (hopefully) before any damage is done.

  • Disk Utility - Erase Free Space - Creating Temporary File Freezes

BDAqua:  I tried responding to your reply to my original posting but I get an error message that I was not authorized to reply.  I logged out.  I can't find the original posting in my Activity so I approached from the link in my e-mail saying you had replied.  Now it says the area is restricted.  What's up with that?

    Here's the original post:
I used "Erase Free Space" with Disk Utility after trashing several files I no longer wanted on the hard drive or recovered.  I used  "Zero Out Deleted Files" option.  It took over 12 hours before an error message appeared "Your start up disk is almost full.  You need to make more space available on your start up disk by deleting files."   I thought that was what I was doing.  Disk Utility continued but got stuck on "Creating Temporary File."  I force quit Disk Utility after several more hours.  I had to manually shut down the computer because the restart command wouldn't work.  It rebooted and appears to be OK.   Evidently, this temporary file consumes significant amounts of disk space. This is an older iMac with 10.4.11 (18 GHz PowerPC G5) - I know, pretty old but I still have OS 9 on it and several files I need to extract before I trash it.
    1.  Should I do nothing?  The iMac seems to be working fine.
    2.  How do I know if this Temporary File exists and consuming space?  Spotlight doesn't find it.  Where is it?
    3.  Is my start up disk in fact almost full?  How would I know that?

Here's what I tried to say in my response that I wasn't authorize to make:
I can't seem to reply to your response BD . . . says I'm not authorize . . . so I'll try to reply to my original post.
Thanks BD for your reply.  Here's the info on the drive:  1.3 TB capacity with 1,017 GB available.  Eventually I will recycle the computer at Best Buy who guarantees the hard drive will be erased.  I just want to get all my files off first.  I'll just do another Erase Free Space and see, as you suggest, if there are any files to be zeroed out.  Maybe there aren't any.  I've extracted most of what I want but am debating how to move the entire iPhoto library to an external drive so I can access it from my Mavericks machine.  Can I just drag and drop the iPhoto Library, or do I need to export it somehow?
