Help! Can't back up library to disc

My computer has cooties, so I plan to reformat and start over. The only things I'm afraid of losing are a few pictures and my iTunes library (about 10 gigs).
When I try to back up library to CD-R, everything works until I see "Burning Disc...finishing". Then it just stops. No prompt to insert another disc, no nothing. It does the same when I burn an audio disc, but when I eject the disc (despite warnings) it plays fine. But to back up, I need to insert like 16 CD-R's. Any suggestions?

Update: Success! I used my iPod as an external hard drive following these instructions:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US
After I reformatted I reinstalled my old iTunes 6 and dragged the folder back to My Music. At first, iTunes wuldn't sync a couple hundred songs to my iPod because I wasn't "authorized" so I had to enter my Apple ID and password. Downloaded latest software for Itunes and iPod and all is good.
Investing in an external hard drive still sounds like a good idea, since this was my first reformat and it was a bit nerve-wracking.

Since I have the newest version of itunes, I can't back up like normally. The only way is to considilate files and then put them on an external drive which I don't have. Are there any other options? If I can't back up to a disc like I used to, can I instead just keep everything on my ipod and then if I have to get a new computer or something just download all my songs from the ipod to my new computer's itunes? Will that work? Will I still be able to keep all my songs that way?

I'm going to assume the consolidating files does not work due to hard drive space limitations.
Since you're moving to Windows 7, have you tried using the Windows files and settings transfer utility?  That will move everything for you to the same location on the new computer, it also allows some control over what actually gets moved.
Alternatively, if you know the location of all of the media, it can be manually moved by copying it from the old computer to the new computer in the same location.
Also, using the Apple article on moving the library, take a slight twist on what it says.  Move the iTunes library to the external drive, update the settings in iTunes to reflect the library being on the external drive, then consolodate it.
The options are endless for moving the library... it simply takes a little effort to make it happen and possibly a twist on existing "standard" methods depending on your unique situation.

  • In Lion the command to back up library to disc has been removed? How do I do this now?

In Lion the command to back up library to disc has been removed? How do I do this now? Apple Support has given me a case number and accelerated it with a call back in a few days, and even the techs were surprised by the removal of the ability to incrementally back up to any kind of disc any items added to the iTunes Library since it's last back up.
While this command was in all previous iterations of iTunes, even most of the techs are working from iTunes 10.3, the Lion version has this removed. Help only mentions Time Machine as the back up method. Sorry, I've had too many hard drives go bad, and not one DVD or CD has failed when I needed to retrieve a past purchase or addition of any kind to the iTunes library.
Purchasing from the iTunes store just got less viable, IMHO.

    Dave-
Thanks for the feedback. Those nasty old deprecated features, eh? Seems you are correct that it will now be a third party solution.
I just finished chatting with Mike Bombich about using his Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1 ( http://www.bombich.com/index.html ) to do the job.
He gave me a rough outline of how to set it up for incremental back up of iTunes ~/Music/iTunes or
~/Music/iTunes Music. Creating filters ( http://help.bombich.com/kb/explore/excluding-files-and-folders-from-a-backup-tas k#creating ) tells how to create and save different tasks.
I'l check it out and report back shortly.

  • Has anyone ever SUCCESSFULLY gotten iTunes to back up library to disc?

I've tried numerous times over different versions of iTunes, and I can NEVER get iTunes to back up my purchased library to disc.
It offers to do it to DVD, to regular CD--- and nothing works. It spits the tray out, says to put in a blank CD and I do-- and it "checks Media" and never accomplishes anything. I'm starting to doubt the function even works and was put in there to make it look good.
Has anyone ever successfully gotten the "Back Up Library to Disc" function to work?
im running the latest version of iTunes.

GOOD POINT. You cannot backup to an external hd. Who wants to use dvds OR cds for backup anyway? The whole reason for buying an ipod was to avoid these two optical disc nightmares and get with a hard disk management solution. itunes doesn't recognize external hard drives for backup. Ridiculous. Try using an ext hd as the itunes location for your music if you really want to see problems develop. Managing music instead of playing music has become my past time since I got into the ipod/ itunes mess. All I do is try to clean up it's messes. The software developers need to be accountable. Class action? No support, except forum, unless you want to pay.

  • IPods crash and can't back up library - HELP

I have had an iPod mini for 1.5 years. My spouse got an iPod (30GB video) recently. When we switch between them to update songs from one library, the iPods crash and have to be reset (even that takes a few tries following instructions on iPod help).
I tried circumventing the problem by copying the library on my laptop from our PC (to have one iPod with one computer, both have XP Pro) with the USB drive but the library won't copy from USB drive to the new iTunes. (it will play songs from USB but won't copy them).
    1. Can I backup the library on another computer?
    2. What is the safest way to create a backup library (CDs in my experience may not last long)?
    3. If we update the computer (hopefully soon) will that mean that we can't copy the library to a new commputer and will lose all the songs we bought?
    4. How can we prevent either iPod from blocking or crashing?
Thanks for any advice and help.

  • Cant back up library to disc

im trying to back up my entire library to disc so i bought a bunch of CD-Rs and DVD+Rs, and neither way works. when i use the DVD+R to back the library up, it gets halfway through the first disc and i get an error message and it tells me it cant back it up. then when i tried the CD-R (brand new ones), i insert the first disc and it tells me that it's not blank... i know it can fit on 3 of the DVD+Rs, and i like that way better anyway because it can fit easier on the dvd's, and it starts to back up about half of the first disc on the dvd, but then out of nowhere it says there's a problem...
    any help is appreciated

Thank goodness, I thought it was only me. When I tried to backup my new purchases it comes up with unknown error 1951, when I try to back up my entire library it pops each disc out saying insert blank disc. I even bought a brand new pack of discs. anyone have any ideas out there???

  • Can't back up library to DVD

My friend is trying to back up his itunes library to a DVD with no success. He has the data cd tab checked in the burning preferences. When he trys to burn the library, it says checking media then stops. Can anyone walk me through on how to burn a library to a DVD on windows machine?
    Thanks a lot, Ken

The solution to go back yo version 7.2, where everything worked fine is in the topic that discusses the 261 error. Both errors started with version 7.3.
I will send it to you if you e-mail me at [email protected]
Unfortunately, Apple keeps editing my posts and deleting my e-mail address. They won't let me post the procedure. They won't let me send it as one individual to another. They won't post their own procedure to do it. They are happy letting everyone stay in a state where they can't back up their purchases.
They won't offer any assistance on the board and they won't let me either. And this is what they call superior customer service.
If you catch this post in time, I'll help you. I cannot spend anymore time doing what they should be doing for their customers that spend hundreds of dollars on the players and music purchases.
I leave you now. I'm taking my business to Real Player, Rhapsody, Napster and everone else who may actually care.

  • Can't back up Library file

    Hi All,
Problem: I'm trying to create a backup of my Aperture Library file by simply doing a drag copy of it to an external drive. I get about 2/3 of the way done, when the copy process stops and I get an error that the process has stopped, due to a corrupt file. I get the same result copying to my internal back up, external back up and even doing a file copy on the same drive. I've now done the consistency check and rebuild the database, but there were no errors, so I'm assuming that I will get the same result as before. I'm trying the copy again any way, just to check. If this doesn't work, I see two next steps.
    1. Open the contents of the Library file, try the drag copy again. With the contents exposed, I think I may be able to find the offending file and get rid of it. I know this is dangerous, to muck around in the Library like this, will this work?
    2. Export my library, project by project, then rebuild (import) on to the new drive.
I guess my third option is to just trust that the Vault will work, but after my last experience, I wanted to look at all options.
    Thanks.
Background: I have had a bad run with hard drives lately and just after recovering from having a Samsung 1TB die (lots of hours to restore everything), I had my new WD Caviar Black 2TB start to act funny, with corrupt file issues etc. Here's my config, Mac Pro Quad G5, Mac OS 10.5.8 and Aperture 2.1.4. My current back up plan has been simply drag copies of my data to both an internal and external drives on a regular basis. Simple, yes but it has served me well until this latest bout of hard drive problems.
My short term plan is to get two new 2TB drives to raid in my system, with my external 2TB as a clone of my drive. That should hold me over, till my sales pick up and I can spend my savings on a new Intel Mac Pro with new OS and Aperture 3.
My current problem is getting fully updated copied of everything backed up. I've had some corrupt file issues, which stops the copy process and makes me hunt for the offending file. All that's done, except my Aperture Library. Yes, I have multiple copies of my Vault file, but in the process of rebuilding the last time, I learned that the Vault doesn't keep thumbnails and previews. I got uneasy about this process, when it took forever to rebuild thumbs and previews. It didn't seem like it was working, when I realized I had a copy of my Aperture Library, so I copied it over and everything was cool.

A few thoughts. First when you do the drag of the library file is Aperture closed? Don't know for sure if it would make a difference but it's probably a good thing to do.
Second have you done a disk verify of the volume your Aperture library is on? I would suggest you run disk utility and do a disk verify on this volume just to rule out the possibility of a bad sector.
Finally I would really advise against going into the Aperture library and mucking about unless you have a definite know good backup of the library. You could select all your projects at once and then export them all in one operation as a new library directly onto the external drive. The you could just open this new library in Aperture, no need to import anything.

  • Question about backing up library onto disc

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to backup all of my music onto discs, but I don't want my subscribed podcasts to be backed up (I have a TON). Is there any way to only backup my music?

When you do your backups, do you back up the itunes metadata library ITL file?
That holds all your ratings, playcounts, etc.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
+I lost ALL of the album art, lyrics, and other customizations I had made to the library+
Where are you storing these? By using itunes defaults?

  • Help - can't burn DL DVD+R discs

I just purchased a spindle of Memorex Dual Layer DVD+R discs to backup some of my project folders that are too large for single layer DVDs.However, I am getting the following error message at the start of every time I try to burn a disc.
"The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022)."
I've been reading that others are also having a problem with burning DL-DVDs. Is this a drive problem or a media problem?
After the first 2 tries, I checked the "About this Mac" and saw that under "Disc Burning" it said I have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868 drive and that for both CD write and DVD write it says -R -RW. Does that mean it doesn't support +R discs or DL discs.
I went back to the tech spec page for the MacBook Pro that I have (I bought it 3-1/2 months ago, so it's still new and should have the same specs listed, and there it states the specs as "Maximum write: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R; 4x DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW"
So what is the issue here, and is there a fix for this?

    Hi eric,
Your drive, as the specs say, should be able to burn +R discs.
As Bram has suggested , when only -R discs appear under system profiler this can usually be rectified by simply resetting the PRAM, and sometimes simply by restarting normally, though on rare occasions some level of OS re-installation can also be required.
Those Memorex discs are a bit of a worry , too, though. Generally you are better off sticking with Verbatim, Maxell or TDK with Apple drives. Memorex have a somewhat unfortunate reputation for compatibility problems, I'm afraid, though it depends which actual third party manufacturer has supplied them with your particular batch to some extent.
But you will need to sort out the "-R only" problem first regardless. Once you have done this you may find that your particular batch of Memorex are fine. I'd be very wary about buying them for your Mac in future , though.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Why can i not backup library to disc

Why doesn't iTunes give me the option to burn library or purchases to disc...in fact it doesn't even give me the option to back up the library at all?  I am running a Windows XP Pro and iTunes is up to date.

  • Please, please help-can't sync music library

Hiyas. I made the dreaded switch from Mac back to PC today, and my ipod nano was Mac formatted. Before I plugged in my ipod, I downloaded itunes and authorized the new PC. When I plugged in my nano, itunes informed me I'd have to reformat to Windows and now my library is gone with all of my music with it. I just want to transfer all of my itunes purchased music to my ipod using itunes without having to use an external hard drive to do it. Is that possible at this point? Thank you so much!

    Peon25 wrote:
My preference is to manually manage my music, and not let iTunes take control of it -- the Apple software can't screw anything up if I don't let it have access to my files, ya know?
This issue has nothing to do with manually managing or not. As mentioned, Windows can't read a Mac formatted iPod. Reformatting will delete content on an iPod whether or not you manually manage your music.

Would like to back up my Library to DVDs but my latest version of iTunes is not working as before.  When I click Edit>Library>Export I get a Windows box and if I select the DVD drive nothing works - get an error message.  Previously I would get an iTunes window telling me how many DVDs are required and to put the first one in.  So something changed or went wrong?
