Help can't figure out how to format a page

I can't believe how frustating something so simple to do is getting.
I've put off using this software for months becuase of this. I can never just add a picture add a background picture add some text and move and select at will.
I find it very hard to select objects, it just won't let me do it. Why can't I just hover over my text or picture and click to select and move it around.
I have made an object and want to place text over it. First I can hardly ever select the text object and when I do it wants to tell me where i should place it, like there is a snap on.
I just hate apple right now. All there software is like this.

Adam,
you can simply add a picture by dragging it onto the Pages window. Pages distinguishes between an object "Fixed on page" and an object that "Moves with text". The latter option is probably set for your picture and that's the reason why you cannot move the object at will.
Go to Wrap inspector and change the setting to "Fixed on page". To make the picture an background image, you have to move it to section master (Format/Advanced/Move...). To be able to select an object on the section master, you need to select "Make Master Objects Selectable" (also in the Format/Advanced menu).
Sometimes it's indeed difficult to select an object. Then click outside of the text area (the cursor will disappear) and click and hold the mouse and move it over your objects. Then they should be selected.
