Please help

Hi
a. What Camera - SONY DVR TRS PC 1234 ?
b. Does Your Camera playback OK on the Camera LCD-screen or on analog out to TV ?
c. Big squares on my Camera most often indicates that I need to run a Cleaning Tape
in it. Recording most often harmed and of no use - never figured out if any of it could be saved.
(Cameras SOMY TRV 900E and PC-330 both miniDV tape ones)
else read
*NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
Cable
• Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
SoftWare
• Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

  • Can't import video (.mov) from Coolpix P100 camera to iPhoto

I can't import any .mov files from my Coolpix p100 camera to iPhoto (iPhoto '08, version 7.1.5) Mac OS X 10.4.11. I can import pictures no problem when I use a firewire connection from the camera to my iBook G4. This is the message I get:
    Unreadable files.
The following file could not be imported. (The import failed)
    DSCN0573.MOV
For example, I can see the .mov file under "Information" before I try to import. It says it is a QuickTime movie, 274 MB. I can watch it on my camera.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Is there a chance the .mov file could be imported via some
third party (free ware) video software into the Mac, such as
VLC or a shareware video utility; perhaps Snapz ProX?
Another idea may be to see if the iMovie software would do it.
This topic has come up several years ago, and depending on
the model or brand of camera in some cases, different paths
were taken to get the product and files to work.
In a few cases, some proprietary software provided limited
support for a camera's feature set; some didn't work for Mac.
When the camera creates a hybrid image file, and their own
software was not available in a Mac format, another may be
available to provide the missing link.
There may be some third-party plug-ins that may allow the
QuickTime you have, to open and view the .mov files; not
sure what exact ones would qualify, however, to do it.
With my cameras, which can create .mov files, I have not
experimented with them; as both are essentially still image
cameras and know the results wouldn't suit my projects.
Hopefully one of the video player software products can help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can you import video directly from a video camera ?

Can you import video directly from a video camera to the iPad 2 ? If so, what is needed?

I would say no. I have an Ipad2 with the connection kit. A recent Sony camera which works fine in imovie for my 27" imac, but nothing with the Ipad. Only thing that it finds are pictures that can be made with the same video camera. Apple wrote a note aboit probkmes with importing, but i'm very disappointed with what i have right now.

I can't import my photos from my digital camera (Sony) to my iPad, this problem is recent. I have imported photos without  problem a problem before. Is this problem due to the IOS 6 update? How can I fix it?

I have the same problem and apple needs to fix this - but in the mean time you can manually select the vertical photos then "import - import selected" and you can get your verticals. We need a better fix. THIS IS A BUG!

  • How do i import movies from my sony camera into iphoto?

When I imported my photos from my sony cybershot into iphoto my videos did not come along with them. I've been using a canon with canon image browser until now and never had this problem. HELP!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Launch Image Capture, located in the Applications folder, connect the camera and manually upload the movie files to a folder on the desktop. Then import into iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Importing avi movies from my Canon camera makes iPhone crash

Every time when i make some movies with my Canon camera (Powershot S2 IS) and I want to import them, together will all my pics on my camera, into iPhoto it makes iPhot crash from the point where it is importing the first AVI movie it comes across.
Now I've successfully imported the movies onto my harddrive now using the Image Capture program, but still when I want to import the movies from my harddrive into iPhoto, or even when i want to play them in Quicktime, it makes iPhoto crash, and also Quicktime crashes when i'm trying to view the movie in there.
can somebody point me to an alternative solution or tell me what's wrong and what i need to fix in order to fix it?

Thanks. I'd love to install that one, but i've heard some stories that this piece of software does quite some harm to some things. I dont remember where i read that or what harm it would do. but i'm sure i've heard it someone say.
can you confirm this? or do you still very much recommend me to install this?

  • HELP!how2 import a movie from a family reunion into imovie for a weddingvid

    Hello all,
I am having difficulty importing a video from a dvd into iphoto/imovie. I believe the issue is that the dvd's format is not compatible. I can play the dvd through my dvd player on my mac though... When I try to drag and drop the video into iphoto i get this message:
    Unreadable files
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)
    /Volumes/LOGICAL VOLUME IDENTIFIER/VIDEOTS/VIDEOTS.BUP

    /Volumes/LOGICAL VOLUME IDENTIFIER/VIDEOTS/VTS_010.IFO
    /Volumes/LOGICAL VOLUME IDENTIFIER/VIDEOTS/VTS_011.VOB
Does anyone know how I can save the video in another format or how I can import the file into iphoto or imovie? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to make the video part of a slideshow for my brother's wedding. (its of family members that are unable to attend)
    PLEASE!! Thank you!!

There is a product you can download from the Web called MPEG STREAMCLIP (which is free), which will convert MPEG2 files like yours into a compatible format like DV or h.264. You will also need the Apple Quicktime MPEG2 Playback Component, which costs about $20, and can be downloaded from Apple.
This will not defeat copy protection, but it should work fine if this is your personal DVD.

  • Can't Import my Movies from my TRV520 Sony Camcorder

    Hello,
I recently installed iMovie '08 to my iMac G5 and was trying to import some movies I have in Hi8 cassettes using my TRV520 Sony Camcorder. I have no problem controlling the camera from iMovie '08 (like rewinding, forwarding and stopping), but when I hate play in iMovie the movies plays in camcorder screen but not in iMovie screen instead I just see a blue screen. Same thing happens when I try to import the movie, I only see the blue screen and nothing imports. I went back to my iMovie '06 (the earlier version) I was able to see the movie and import. I tried this also in my MacBook pro and the result was the same can't import movie in iMovie '08.
Is this mean that iMovie '08 does not support my camera? Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a way for me to make my camcorder work in iMovie '08? What should I do?
    I really appreciate your suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Omar

When I connect the camera to the computer it does not automatically open iMovie.
Was actually asking if plugging in the camera, turning it on (in the VTR mode for tape capture), and then opening iMovie '08 automatically recognized the camcorder and opened the "camera import" window. Some have reported this workflow was more successful in ensuring the camcorder was properly recognized.
When iMovie was open I clicked on the import import button.
Did this workflow get the iMovie '08 "camera import" window to recognized the camcorder "by name?"
I could not open or play movie in my computer but when I use the controls in iMovie it plays and stops movie in my camera.
Are you using the "Automatic" or the "Manual" setting? (I prefer "Manual" since I don't import every clip/file for editing.) In this mode, you use the "controls" in the "camera import" window to rewind/fast forward and start/stop playback of the tape in the import preview window. When you want to "capture" something, you just press the "import" button to begin capture and and the "stop" button to stop capturing a segment/clip. As soon as you stop, the captured clip/segment should be save and the thumbnails created. You then repeat this procedure until you have "captured" all of the files you want. Have never used it, but believe/assume the "Automatic" mode should automatically rewind your entire tape, place it in the play mode, and proceed to capture all clips contained on the tape. In any case, I had no problem capturing using the set up and manual workflow with my TRV520.

  • I am having trouble importing a movie from a Sony Digital 8 camera since downloading OS 10.9.5.  I have an iMac early 2013.  What might be the problem?

Can't download movie from Digital 8 camcorder.

Thanks for responding to my question.  You are correct in that you needed more information to suggest a solution.  Another respondent suggested that I go to the Apple Support area and read the Importing Movies section.  The piece of information I didn't have was that the USB connector no longer would work between the iMac and my camera. You have to use the thunderbolt connection rather than the USB connection on the back of the computer.  Once I got the proper connectors, it worked just like it was supposed to.

  • Help: Can't import old imovies from external drive unless I save on iMac

Forgive me, I have read the similar questions in this forum, but I still need help.
I made a great number of movies using the old imovie HD, and then saved all of them on my external hard drive. When I open up imovie 08 and look at the event library, it lists my hard drive with that yellow warning triangle and exclamation point on it (What does that mean?). Naturally, the old movies don't show up, so I try to import them manually. When I do, the new movies get imported on my imac. Is there any way for the imported movies to remain on the external drive? And should I be worried about the warning triangle? I should add that the external drive is a "My Book" that was originally used on a PC, and has also been used on my imac for the last 12 months with no issue.
Thanks to all for your help.

+I should add that the external drive is a "My Book" that was originally used on a PC+
Then it is probably still formatted as a FAT partition, which has file size limitations that make it unsuitable for storing movies. You can check with "Disk Utility". For best results when used exclusively on a Mac, you should convert it to the Mac Journaled HFS file system with Disk Utility. The conversion will erase anything currently on the drive, so you will have to temporarily move the contents to another location.

  • Can't import HDV 720p from my Sony HDR HC1 camcorder to my FCP 5.0.1 help

I have footage that was shot on a contractors JVC HDV camera at 720p. I play it in my Sony HDR HC1 and i can view it and it plays awesome. It even recognizes its 720p. But i try to import it into Final Cut Pro on my IMac G5 or powerbook G4 17inch and it can play the camera but not capture footage. I have FCP version 5.0.1 How can i get this video into my editing software ive tried it on imovie as well and cant import video but i can control the camera. Please help.
Do i need to buy the updated FCP i noticed doing some research there is a FCP 5.1 now that i heard nothing about?
Thanks for the help in advance.
    powerbook g4 17inch, powerbook G4 12inch, imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Get a hold of the JVC camera the footage was shot with. When FCP 5.1.2 is released (this month), you'll actually be able to capture the footage directly... problem is that the JVC recording is short GOP, and FCP currently only supports LONG GOP... You will need to upgrade to capture the footage directly, or buy this: http://www.lumierehd.com But in any event, you'll need the JVC camera to capture it's recordings, now or in the future.
JVC's iteration of HDV isn't the same as Sony's... that's the problem. PLUS FCP doesn't support any recordings of the JVC format except 1080i60 as of now. 5.1.2 will change that I believe. IBC was where this new update was announced I think, and you'll need to "cross grade" your FCP 5.0.x version to FCP 5.1. to get this update down the line... Yeah, I don't like the situation either, but there it is... Canon's HDV and JVC's HDV are very similar FWIW...

  • How can I import a movie from sony DCR trv340 tape to Macbook Pro?

I have started using iMovie, I know it's been there quite a while, and I am trying to imort from a tape using Sony DCR-TRV340. I can import tapes created on the TRV340 but other tapes that were created on a different Sony device, from back in late 1980's will not load. When I pllay them on the camcorder they appear and I can watch them in iMove but they will not record. It says NO DATA FROM DEVICE. Is there a way to fix that or a setting that needs to be changed?
    Any hel would be appreciated.

A dual mode camcorder with both a photo camera and camcorder function.
While Apple doesn't seem to list these as compatible, have you tried connecting with a firewire cable, and turning on iMovie and seeing if it recognizes your camcorder?
Here is Apple's commentary on trying to get a camcorder to work:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1059#2
What about contacting Samsung, often companies have a knowledge base.
I know this isn't what you were asking, but if you have something recorded you absolutely must have, I have a hunch a friend with an older windows computer might be able to get it downloaded, then you could transfer it by thumbdrive to imovie.
    Just a thought.

  • Can't import home movie from DVD to iMovie HD

I have recently had over an hour of old home movies without sound (Super 8mm, not video tape) professionally transferred to a DVD. The DVD was delivered in both VIDEO_TS (VOB) and in MPEG 2 formats.
I am unable to import either of these formats into either iMovie HD or Final Cut Express. Each attempt results in an Error Message that file type is not supported or that QuickTime cannot parse it, Error -2048.
I have also tried DVDxDV which generates a .mov file, but get the same error message.
How can I get these analog-to-digital converted DVD files to import into iMovie/Final Cut Express so that I can edit and rearrange clip sequence?
The video transfer firm has no answer to this problem either. (It works fine on their iMac G5 equipment running Final Cut Pro).

I have also tried DVDxDV which generates a .mov file, but get the same error message.
I'm surprised at that. Did you check out the DVDxDVD FAQ at http://www.dvdxdv.com/DVDxDV.faq.htm
You might want to also look at ffmpegX at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
The ffmpegX installation and operating instructions could be a little clearer, but it works.
BTW, when having film transfers made like that, find a place that will transfer to a miniDV tape. You will get maximum quality this way as DV compression is much lower than the MPG-2 compression on the DVDs you were given making DV a much better starting point.
The video transfer firm has no answer to this problem either.
It doesn't sound like a very "professional" place. A professional service would have suggested output to miniDV tape so you could easily edit the clips.
