Help! Can't mount disc images or run Disc Utility!

Hey all,
Somethings gone wrong with my iMac, I've attempted to mount a disc image, and I receive the following error:
"The following disc images failed to mount. Reason: No such file or directory"
This now happens with every single .dmg file I try to mount. Even ones I know work because i've used them before. So I know for a fact that the file I've tried to mount isn't just been damaged.
It gets worse...
I tried to run Disc Utility to repair the problem and it won't open. Everytime I try I get the message "The application Disc Utility quit unexpectedly". I click re-open, and try again, but still nothing.
I don't know what to do, i've downloaded Disc Warrior, but couldn't install as I obviously can't mount dmg files.
Also, my Toast application won't open, don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Anyway, does anybody have any advice? It would be so greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey guys, so I've acquired the DiskWarrior disc, rebuilt the drive, and I am still unable to mount dmg files.
Any further suggestions?

  • Can't mount disk image error message for TC

    After a couple of frustrating days trying to get a back-up to my TC to work (time wasted waiting for the process to fail each time - Can't mount disk image error type messages etc) I finally got onto this forum and find quite a few people sharing my problem! I wont wait as long next time I have a problem to enter the discussions, tho I must admit I don't get many problems with my Apple gear.
    There doesn't appear to be a solution in the threads, but at least I am not alone!
    How long before and will Apple fix this?

  • Can I mount .iso images directly into my file system ?

    Hello,
    I would like to install new Solaris releases as they are released, but I would rather not burn a set of 5 CDs for every new release just to update my system.
    I heard there is an 'upgrade install' in the Solaris installer, that will try to preserve my existing system, while installing a new Solaris release. Is it working ?
    I would like to download the .iso images, mount them during install, and use them like this to upgrade my system. Is it possible ?
    Thank you,
    Timothy Madden

    Oh, I meant I have looked on the man pages and on docs.sun.com and I found both tools as you said. But I did not upgraded already, that's going to take a while.
    First I need to make more room and I am still waiting answers on some other topic I started about physical disc slices.
    Live Upgrade looks like a lot of work, there are many search results about it and I would simply go for mounting .iso images after booting the miniroot with GRUB and then starting the installer. I am not 100% sure I can start the installer without booting with a real CD-ROM, but I think it should work.

  • Can you set an image at run time?  Does it really work?

    I have read that others have been able to set an image at run time, but I cannot seem to get it to work (the image I set does not load).
    What I do is have a page, call it page2, that has two image components on it. In the constructor for page2 I do this:
    // Additional user provided initialization code
    image1.setValue("bike1.JPG");
    image2.setValue("bike2.JPG");
    The jpg files are in the build directory:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Darrin\My Documents\Creator\Projects\ImageTest\build\images
    The odd thing is that for the first image component(image1), I set a default jpg file (nogo.JPG that is in the same directory as the other two), and that does load.
    In fact, when I I check the value of image1 in afterRenderResponse by calling image1.getValue() it still has the default image (nogo.JPG) instead of the one I set it to (bike1.JPG) in the constructor by calling image1.setValue("bike1.JPG");
    So, either the image1.setValue() has no effect, or something is overwriting it.
    What is the trick to getting an image to load at run time like this?
    THANKS!

    Well after several more hours of banging myh ead against the wall, I still cannot get this to work.<br><br>
    I read in the constructor comments that whatever is in the jsp file will override the backing bean's constructor, so that might be part of the problem, but others I thought got this to work using a similar method.<br><br>
    Here is what I tried last which still does not work, but mimics what others have said did work for them:<br><br>
    //See if the default jpg file can even be copied over
    <br> image3.setHeight(image1.getHeight());
    <br> image3.setUrl(image1.getUrl());
    <br> image3.setValue(image1.getValue());
    <br>
    <br> Integer aiw = new Integer("1");
    <br> float aar = 0;
    <br> float ar = 0;
    <br>
    <br> ImageIcon ii = new ImageIcon("C:/Documents and Settings/Darrin/My Documents/Creator/Projects/ImageTest/build/images/bike1.JPG");
    <br> ar = (float)ii.getIconHeight()/(float)ii.getIconWidth();
    <br> aiw = new Integer(ii.getIconHeight());
    <br> aar = ar*aiw.intValue();
    <br> image1.setHeight(""+(int)aar);
    <br> image1.setUrl("images/bike1.JPG");
    <br> image2.setValue("C:/Documents and Settings/Darrin/My Documents/Creator/Projects/ImageTest/build/images\\bike2.JPG");
    <br> image2.setUrl("C:/Documents and Settings/Darrin/My Documents/Creator/Projects/ImageTest/build/images\\bike2.JPG");
    <br><br>Note that when I run this and look at the log that I write out to in afterRenderRepsponse, it shows that image1 (which shows up as the default image I set at design time) and image3 (which does not show up which I set at run time using image1's value) both show the nogo.JPG image from the <b>resource</b> directory while image2 (that I set at run time to be bike2.JPG) is showing up as <b>empty</b>
    <br><br>
    This is really getting frustrating, and I would greatly appreciate a small tutorial from the JSC staff on just how you need to go about doing this. given that this is so common a need, a tutorial is warranted. Heck, just clue me in on how it is done and I will write one!

  • Need Help - Can't Import ANY Images into LR4.4 Since OS Upgrade

    I can't import ANY images to LR 4.4 since upgrading my Mac OS to Mountain Lion 10.8.3 this past week. I downloaded LR5 Beta and all works well. I deleted LR5 Beta to see if it was conflicting with LR4.4 somehow and rebooted. Still no change. I can't import from my card reader (that says it can't even read the files) or from a location on my hard drive. I am beyond lost and frustrated.
    The error message for importing is "Could not copy a file to requested location."
    I need ideas. I am afraid to deleted and reinstall as I don't want to lose all my folders within. I looked all over the web and can't figure it out.
    If you need any other info, please let me know. I am hopeful that someone can help me.

    I added LR5 again and that works perfectly, but LR4 is still not working properly. I opened the preferences and catalog settings to compare...and they all look the same. I am beyond baffled. I don't plan on dropping more money for LR5, so I need LR4 to get back to working properly.

    Hi All!
    I've created dd-image of SOLARIS-partition (c0t0d0s2).
    Could anybody tell me, how can i mount slices in created dd-image? Is it possible?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi.
    1. In case on this device was created just one slice on whole disk:
    lofiadm -a <path_to_mage>
    mount /dev/lofi/1 /mnt
    2. In case was created more than 1 slices. You can use dd for copy every separeted slice to separete file
    and create many lofi-devices.
    dd if=<image> of=<slice_image> skip=<start cyl for this slice> count=<cyl_num> bs=<cyl_size>
    In case you don't know original partition table for this disk, you can read
    /usr/include/sys/vtoc.h
    and try get reguired information with od

  • Help, can't startup PB except by target disc mode

    On normal start up, I get the "You need to restart your computer......" message with start symbol behind the writing. every time I try to restart the same thing happens. I've tried all the keys on start up tricks and the only ones that work are option/startup where I can choose Hard Drive, OS Disc, or Hardware tools. If I choose Hard Drive, it goes back to the kernal panic screen with "you need to .....". If I choose OS Disc, it goes to a light gray screen with the apple symbol in the middle and just stays there (also does this if I try to startup holding C with startup disc). If I choose Hardware Tools, it lets me test the hard drive and everything checks out fine but when I restart back to the "You need to restart.....". It will also startup in target disc mode hooked up to my iMac. All of my apps and files were there so I transfered everything, whew! I can then insert the startup disc into the PB and it comes up on my iMac in target disc mode. I then try to open and reinstall OS 10.4 but it tells me I have to restart to start the process and I can't do this in target disc mode. I just ant to be able to erase everything on my PB and reinstall OS 10.4 with the PB start discs. Is this possible? thanks....
    J.R.

    Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
    Have you recently added RAM?
    May be a solution on one of these links.

    You should be able to erase your PB (in target disc mode) hard drive while it is connected to the iMac. Use Disc Utility on the iMac. You can even install Tiger on the PB while it is connected to the iMac via TDM.

  • Finder crashes when trying to open disc mounted from disc image

    I downloaded a disc image of an application I need to install (Verizon Access Manager).  Image downloads fine and when I double click it, it mounts the applicaiton disc.  But if I try to open the application disc, it crashes the Finder.
    I checked both the disc image and the disc it created with Disk Utility and they both come back clean.
    Not sure what to do.

    Might open Activity Monitor in Utilities & see if you can force Quit/Restart Finder there, but might try this...
    First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if Finder & Search work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    If that doesn't work my next guess would be maybe Spotlight is messed up.

  • I updated to Tiger 10.4.11 & cannot mount disk images &other problems.HELP!

    I just updated to Tiger 10.4.11/combo update. I used the stand alone installer (because Software Update since I updated to 10.4.10delta). I repaired permissions before and after the update. Now I can't mount disk images I always get the message "Mount Failed".This occured when downloading and trying to open an existing disk image.I ran fsck, even tried AppleJack all to no avail.I know this problem wasn't there before the update as I downloaded the update and a couple of small utilities and all was well with the world (they all mounted properly). I was doing fine with OSX 10.4.9 but just had to upgrade! Can someone PLEASE HELP ME? I'M grateful for any suggestions and the forums have been good to me in the past.

    Some part of the OS is messed up... I've heard that if you Deltas you must stick with those, if you do Combos you must stick with those, no idea if it's true, as I always use the bigger Combo Updates.
    Most likely the best solution for both of you is an Archive & Install...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
    Then apply...
    The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

    The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

  • Cleaned Open With menu, now can't mount images

    I just cleaned up the "Open With" contextual menu using a Terminal command suggested in another thread. Now that menu is much shorter and everything is fine, except with some formats, which don't seem to have a default application. Not sure if it's an expected issue.
    Specifically, when trying to open a sparsebundle image using the Finder, I got this message: "There is no default application specified to open the document "xyz.sparsebundle". What is the default app to open/mount sparsebundled images, and where to find it? I can still mount those images directly by using Disk Utility, but not in the Finder.
    Maybe a restart would solve most of these missing default apps?

    V.K., you've saved the day. Thank you!
    This is what I did: First, I trashed a launch-something plist, following an Apple support document, listed in the same thread about clearing this contextual menu. I emptied the trash. As I couldn't see any result (maybe I should wait longer), I did the Terminal thing too. After a minute or so, it was done. Maybe it was that?
    Anyway, it's solved now. Thanks again.

  • How do I load Leopard from a disc image of the install DVD?

    Hi. I've made a disc image of my Leopard install DVD using Disk Utility and have saved it to a partitioned external HDD. On another partition on the same drive is a bootable SuperDuper backup of my machine.
    How do you get the machine to boot from the DVD disc image? The disc image mounts, but when I click re-start it simply restarts from the current startup disk and I can not work out how to get it to restart from the disc image in the same way it would from the disc itself.
    thanks
    Simon

    Fair enough question Kurt. I'm just thinking ahead to deal with a possible crisis as sometimes I work in fairly remote areas of Asia. My current superdrive will no longer burn disks but is still managing to read them, but if this facility too fails when I'm in the middle of nowhere and it also becomes necessary to be able reinstall the OS it would be very handy to have it on a drive. I'm also keen to carry as little kit as possible so getting a working disk image onto the external HDD that I carry would also remove the need to lug the install disks with me everywhere too. I suppose I could carry an additional external optical drive for this contingency but much easier if its possible from a drive.
    So there is method in my madness, at least I think so! Trouble is I'm having no success in making it work thus far.

  • Trouble burning Blu-ray or disc image using Share

    I have a project I have tried to burn to a Blu-Ray disc and to the hard drive as a disc image using Share>Blu-ray. I have burned successfully before to the same Blu-ray burner with other projects. But now when trying to burn a disc I get this error after a day of transcoding:
    The operation couldn’t be completed. (DSPPublishing error -1024.)
    When I try to save it as a disc image it tells me there is not enough space on the disc even though there is over a Terabyte empty. The project is estimated as 21.6 gig so I know it should fit on the 25 gig bluray and of course on the hard drive. Trashing prefs did not work either. This is a very frustrating process as each attempt takes a day to transcode before the error pops up and you have to start all over again.
    I am using
    iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
    16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    FCP X 10.0.6
    OS X 10.8.2

    This is the error message I get. It's after FCP X is done with making the BMV folder and runs that disc burner app. There is about 850 gigs on the drive I want to save the disc image to, lots of space.
    I thought maybe the drive the events was on was affecting this process, because it was full. I cleared out about 30 gigs and still got this message.
    I never had any problems creating a Blu-ray disc image before. That's the optimcal way, IMHO, because you can burn the BD in Toast as the disc image and Toast won't reencode or do anything, it just burns the disc image and the disc has played on ever Blu-ray player I've tried it on.
    Anyone have any more ideas?
    Thanks

  • Getting medium write error on burning a disc image using Disk utility

    Have a MacBrook Pro 15 inch, circa Summer 2007, using OX 10.4.11. up until recently (as in before February) have been able to burn DVD's using Toast (message Medium Writer Error). Started getting problems where the burn failed. Thought maybe it was Toast, so I tried creating an iDVD project and tried to burn the DVD using that, and it stopped in the middle as well and then spit the disk out with no error message.
    , this time I tried creating a disc image, and used disk utility to burn. The process looked like it was going to work but then failed with a message that I have a medium write error.
    I have no problems burning a regular data disk on my superdrive so I am thinking it's maybe a software glitch rather than hardware. . Any thoughts, as to what could be causing this problem all of a sudden. By the way, there are other users out there, who seems to be having DVD burning problems all of a sudden, but most people suggest other media. I am using the same stack of DVD-R's from before when I had no problem.

    Well, I had assumed my media was ok, since I had a spindle of DVD-R's and had used many of them successfully (until now!, ha ha).
    I went out this afternoon and bought another brand (Memorex) and it successfully recorded.
    So hopefully this solves my problem, I had no idea it was the media since I had used several of them before.
    Thanks for your help.
