Help can't open itunes, says it was created by a newer version of iTunes?

Help! When I try to start iTunes it says: The File "iTunes Library.itl"; cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
Today before the listed above happened it 1st said it detected an issues with Quicktime, so I followed the instructions to uninstall and installed Quicktime using the Quicktime standalone installer. Then when I tried to get to iTunes the above popped up instead.....please help me!! I'm not computer savvy and do not know what to do!

Here is some advice I copied from a b noir (regular poster on these forums) message.
I've seen that one reported every now and then after an version update, if the update hasn't gone through properly. (The library files seem to get updated, but the program files don't.)
So, let's try another iTunes update, taking a few extra explicit precautions this time.
Download and save a fresh copy of the installer to your hard drive. (Don't run the install on line.)
Latest iTunes Installer
Switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
Now run the install by doubleclicking on the iTunesSetup.exe (installer) file you downloaded earlier.
Does that install go through okay? If so, does iTunes launch without the error message this time?

If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.

Unless you have attempted to downgrade to an older version of iTunes this is likely to be a sign of a corrupt library. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

Unless you've recently attempted to downgrade iTunes this is probably a sign of a corrupt library file. See Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash.

  • ITunes won't open. iTunes Library.itl can't be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

The error message I get when I try to open iTunes says, The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." It gives me the option to Quit or Download iTunes.  When I select Download iTunes it checks for software updates and says iTunes is up todate.  I then downloaded the latest version of iTunes and this didn't help.  It still wouldn't open because of the same error.

Normally you get this message if you downgrade to an earlier version of iTunes, but it can sometimes happen if an upgrade doesn't go through properly.
You should be able to wok round this by rebuilding your library from the xml file as in this Apple article:

  • My computer crashed and I had to re load my operation system. now itunes won't open. it says it was created by a newer version? what is that?

my computer crashed and I had to re load my operation system. now, when I try to open my itunes all I get is a message that says "can not be read because itunes was created by a newer version" what does that mean and how do I correct it. I need my music back!

As iTunes is uopgraded the newer versions require that the iTunes database be upgraded to match. It sounds like you now have an older version of the sftware attempting to load an upgraded library which it can't do.
What version of OS X are you running?
What version of iTunes are you currently running?
What versions were you running when your system crashed?

  • IPhoto won't open library, says it was created in a newer version

Copied wife's home folder from her old MacBook (going to the kids) onto MacBookPro (going from me to her). Both machines running latest Lion with patchs and iPhoto version 8.X. When I open iPhoto on the MBP, it says "Cannot open library, it was created with a newer verison of iPhoto". Yet both the MB and MBP are runnign the same versions of iPhoto?
    Solutions?
Should I buy latest iPhoto from the app store?
    Is the libary DB corrupt?
    thanks,
There are 30Gb+ of photos (mostly of kids since birth) so domestic harmony demands a speedy solution
BTW is there a limit on how large an iPhoto DB can be?

Why can't I get into my itunes library anymore?  I've purchased hundreds of songs in the past 3 years. When it asks me "would you like to download the newer version? I click yes and successfully download the latest yet I still cant access my library.

  • The file "iTunes Library.itl" can not be read because it was created by a new version of iTunes.

so my computer got unplugged and its battery died right as it was finishing an iTunes update. when i restarted it, i got the above message. i re-installed iTunes from the website and that didn't help. i went directly to the mp3 files and tried to open those. no go there either. :frustrating!!!
when the "dialog box" shows up with that message, there is an "OK" button, but there when you click on it, it just closes. there is no prompt or hint at what one can do to remedy this situation. any help?
btw, i have a Dell laptop running WindowsXP with all my iTunes music on a detached hard drive.

I already thanked you but under the other "post". I am ecstatically happy to have my old system back, and will never upgrade anything again .. fear I'm doomed to happy dinausaur-hood.

  • Library can't be read because it was created by a newer version...after upd

Help please!!! I recently got the usual update available message so I updated the itune version on my computer. SInce then each time I plug my iPod in and try to do anything I get a message that says the file "iTunes Library.it!" can't be read because it was created by a newer version of iTune.... surely if yo update you simply carry over the library???? It seems that I will need to create a library all over again. Has anyone got any ideas. I tried deleting the whole program and reinstalling the original software that came with the iPod. But to no avail. Any help would be great.

i've seen that happen before. (actually, more commonly on itunes 6.0.x versions than 7.0.x versions.)
it can sometimes happen if the upgrade doesn't go through properly. (you can end up with the later version of the library file, but the earlier version of the program files are still in place.)
so let's try the itunes 7 update again. download and save a copy of the itunes 7.0.1.8 installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than on line. switch off antivirus and antivirus applications prior to the install.
