Help!  Can't open VRD_MC3 DVD's

I have an urgent project for a client who needs me to rip a bunch of high school basketball games for future editing. They are all VRD_MC3 DVD's! I've never seen this format before.
The discs sometimes play upon insertion, but then the folder containing the files gets a brigh red minus sign on it and there are NO files in the DVD volume/folder.
I tried using DVDxDV, Handbrake, and MPEG streamclip with no luck.
Has anyone seen this format before? What do you do with it???
Thanks,
Jenny

After many hours, I figured out a workaround. Using Toast, I was able to copy the original basketball DVDs. Each copied DVD played as a regular DVD immediately after being burned. So one at a time I copied the VRD_MC3 discs using Toast and then immediately opened DVDxDV to rip them and get .mov files for future editing.
The weird thing is that after taking the copied DVD's out and reinserting them, they didn't show any files just like the originals.
No idea why this is happening. I even went in to the folder containing all the DVD Player records for previously played DVDs and deleted them - thinking maybe if the system thought the DVD was brand new it would play properly. But that didn't work.
So my issue is now solved...thanks for all the ideas.

  • I can't open the DVD tray

    I can't open the DVD tray. There's nothing inside. I hear a sound (a grrrr) but it won't open.
    I had that 2-3 times in the last 5 years and I always managed to open it by pushing the "DVD ROM drive open button" while I restart but not this time.
    I also tried to put a paper clip in the little hole but that doesn't work either.
    In the Apple help site, they say push the "eject media key" on your keyboard; I didn't know where that is but I know now it's the F12 key; when I push it I hear a sound coming from the tray (like a electric screwdriver) but nothing happens.
    So what can I do ?
    I saw that Andrew Favret had the same problem in October and Don Archibald said:
    • Boot or restart the machine, immediately press the Option key, keep it held down. This will bring up Startup Manager. Once Startup Manager has finished loading, press the key combo Command-. (Command-Periodkey). This should open the tray.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I tried the "Option" key. The Start Up Manager appeared: A display with my 5 drives in the middle, and a Right Arrow icon on the right.
    I did click on the right arrow and it started to load normally as it does when you turn the computer on.
    So I try the whole thing again and now instead of clicking on the right arrow, I tried the command and period key. I hear again, a sound coming from the tray and I see the icon for "eject" on the screen but nothing happens. Tried 5-6 times. And the F12 key don't have any effect at this time.
    If I had a disc in the tray, I'm sure the icons for the DVD drive will appear but the tray is empty.
    Not sure if there's a relation but I just upgraded that same day to a new version of iTunes (from version 7 to 8.0.2) and 3 other upgrades: QuickTime player (from 7.1.3 to 7.5.5) Plus Java and Security something.
    Usually there is a CD/DVD in the tray that won't eject, but you say the tray is empty. Are there any other users of you Mac, especially kids? Someone may have placed something in the tray that is causing the jam.
    Here's the usual fixes.
    First try a Restart while holding down the mouse button.
  • Help: Can't open "Yellow Submarin" children book(294mb) on iPhone 4S.....
    help: Can't open "Yellow Submarin" children book(294mb). My iBooks 2 on my iPhone 4S keeps forbidden me for reading it. Saying it exceed fileSIZE limite. Please help me what shall i do?
    To be able to read ebooks purchased from the iTunes Store you must have OS X 10.9 Mavericks installed on your computer. That version of the OS contains iBooks, which allows you to read your purchased ebooks on your computer. .
    If you decide to install Mavericks make a backup for your computer first, and double the hardware requirements to make sure your Mac can run it.
  • Need help can't open existing itunes
    Today I had to completely restore my pc to it's original settings. I have an itunes account but now I cannot get any of the music or audio books that I had in there. Is there a way to get my stuff back or am I out of luck?
    Marc & Others,
    I'm having the exact same issue, but know when it began. I changed the default language by going to the 'International' section in System Preferences and selecting the language -- French in our case (my wife is French, easier for her to navigate some apps). The moment I did, all icons from my desktop were wiped and I can no longer get into System Preferences.
    Same other issues occurred as you noted below - bouncing icon but nothing happens, can't change date/time, can't open finder. All language setting are in French though ...
    I tried going to user/library/preferences/ and removing the files you noted below, but can't access them -- they're greyed out.
    I'm at my wits end ... this problem seems to be common as I've seen several listings for it, but your the first who seems to have solved it. Can you, or anyone here, help?
    Thanks in advance!
  • Can´t open some DVD´s in DVD player since I´ve got Lion-there was never such problem under snow Leopard
    Can´t play some DVD´s in Apples DVD player, that run well onmy machine(s) before i`ve installed lion. Even if I say in system Preference "when inserting DVD-start DVD player, it starts, but can´t even select the DVD´s. They appear in finder, I can playém e.g. with VLC, but DVD player says "no DVD available"
    ( My OS is upgraded to 10.7.1)
    Can anyone fix it?
    In my special case, it seems to be a slowly dying superdrive. Yesterday I´ve got a brand new DVD,which was not readable in my Imac. After some retries the drive simply ejected the disk.
    `Cause I do not own a DVD-Player I went to a neighbour, where the dvd played fine. Now I realised after som tries, that my mac does not recognize any of my double density dvd´s. Single density works.
    I think I will return my mac to the shop to get a new drive.
  • PC Can't open a DVD/CD made on my Mac
    I made a CD and a DVD of jpeg photos on my mac. I did not do it from iPhoto. I did it with disk utility after making a disk image from a folder. I then gave it to my daughter who runs windows XP on her laptop. She is not able to open either disk. I can't help her because PC's make me nuts!
    Is there a way to open them?
    Is there something that I did or something or that I can do (formating?) so that she can open them if I make another set of disks?
    Paper
    If you made a disc image from a folder and burnt it, you most likely made Mac formated disc (either Extended or Standard) which wouldn't be able to be read on a PC. Now I haven't used iPhoto to burn discs, so I don't know if it can do hybrid discs (Mac & PC), but you can try this...
    If you go to the File menu (when in Finder), select "New Burn Folder". Drag your photos into the newly created "Burn Folder". Don't worry that the files look like aliases (they are just placeholders, the actual files will be written to disc). When you are done loading the folder (and don't forget to rename the folder to what you want the disc to be named), burn the disc by either clicking the "Burn" button in the open "Burn Folder" window, or selecting "Burn 'Folder Name' to Disc..." via the Finder's "File" menu. Insert blank disc, and away you go. According to the dialog, a Burn Folder burn "should" be readable on both Mac and Windows.
    Or...
    Open Disk Utility... click New Image... then select Image Format>MS-DOS (FAT)... then select a size that can accommodate all the photos... name the image, then create it.
    When the image mounts on your desktop, drag your photos into it (like a virtual HD), then unmount it. When you are done, burn it to disc with Disk Utility.
    Now since this is in MS-DOS format, you may need to rename the files in the old 8+3 format (XXNAMEXX.EXT), or the files maybe truncated when viewed on a PC.
    Hopefully one of these methods will work for you. It's been awhile since I've done either of these, as I use Toast for my burning needs. However, you should be go to go.
  • Help - can't open .mpg file with Quicktime 7.3
    Hi folks,
    Just tried to open a .mpg file of a recent santa visit for my little boys and Quicktime indicated it couldn't open it saying it wasn't a movie.
    I upgrade to Quicktime pro but that didn't solve the problem.
    Any thoughts as regards possible symptoms ? When I left Lapland the assistant played back the clips on a USB disk so it seems as if the file is okay !?
    I was trying to import the clip into an iMovie project to burn a DVD in time for Christmas - any other application I could use as a workaround to get this into a format that iMovie would recognise ?
    Thanks,
    Kieran.
  • Help - can't open a fla. file
    I have created a fla file and I was working on it today when
    flash crashed and since then every time I open that fla file, flash
    crashes again! any ideas? I have been working on this file for more
    then a week and I was just about to finish it!!! HELP!
    Don't mean to sound bad but you should have backed up your
    file during the week, also save as new file with V2 at the end of
    name just so that if it gets screwed up you always have the other .
    In terms of fixing your file, have you tried opening another
    fla file and seeing if it is just flash prog that has a problem and
    not file. Also if possible can you try opening the fla on another
    computer?
    I can't seem to open the WI tax forms online - I live out of state so is essential that I can open them but they either tell me that I need to download version 9.1 or that there is an Invalid enumerated value: validationState. The fault occurred on line 147524.  I have uninstalled my adobe reader, reinstalled an older version; updated to a newer version...pretty much exhausted everything.  I was able to open Iowa tax forms online (they did have slight glitch at first but then it worked).  Here is a screenshot of what I get:
    I cannot install on a Windows 7 64 bit machine.  Ran diagnostic on my DVD (yes, it is DVD), no issues found, Microsoft says disc is unreadable, yet the disc opens on an old Vista machine.  Any way I can just download and register using my serial number?  I've ejected repeatedly and just won't read it.  It is a Bluray capable drive, but I can read regular DVDs no problem.
