Help - Can't open Word for Windows docs because of "Spelling Checker" error

Since updating to the new Pages of iWork 08, I've started having consistent problems opening Word documents sent to me from Windows using colleagues. When I open the .doc in Pages, an error message appears saying "Alert: Couldn't contact Spell Checker." When I dismiss the error message, it immediately pops up again. It is impossible to dismiss the error message long enough to close the document or even to quit Pages, so I have to Force Quit Pages. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem and be able to open Word documents in Pages again? Thanks!

WordService is not a spell checker. It adds various actions to the Services menu, such as changing to smart quotes, changing to lowercase, etc. I've been using it successfully since Pages 1 came out.
I suggest deleting/moving/archiving/something with that CocoAspell file & restart your Mac. It very welll could be the culprit. It's not the current version of these third-party spell checkers that are a problem. The problem seems to be left over bits after a spell checker is removed that is seen when you open a Word document, but the original program isn't found.

I have tried everything on the FAQ's page with no luck. I've uninstalled it, and reinstalled it, with no luck. Any suggestions? I am desperate.

    NH,
This may seem a fine point, but iWork apps don't actually Open Office apps. They Import them. The reason I make this distinction for you is that when you view the result of the import, you may see some variations from what was in the Office document because of an imperfect translation, and when you make edits, you are editing an iWork document, not the original Office document.

  • Can I edit the system file Manifest.XML in Word for Windows? (there's a reason for doing this)

I renamed a file directory containing several PDFs. Consequently, Adobe Digital Editions says these files are missing when I try to open them and look at notes I made. There seems to be an obvious solution, but I'm unfamiliar with XML and don't want to screw things up. The file locations and a lot of other information for Digital Editions is in an XML file called Manifest. If I can edit the XML file to show the correct directory, I expect I'd be able to see these files and recover my notes. I'm unsure what Word for Windows may do (e.g., add or delete characters) when I edit and save the new Manifest.  That might corrupt the Manifest and be extremely counterproductive.
Is editing the file locations in Word for Windows safe, so long as Digital Editions isn't open when I do my editing?

I can confirm that Notepad++ can happily edit manifest.xml files, but as Jim_Lester says, make a backup (especially if you are not used to XML).
You may well find that if you Open the .epub files from their new location explicitly from ADE (ctrl-O) that you will both be able to read documents and see the notes.
I can't vouch for that; but if it works I'd recommend it over editing the manifest file.

  • You can't open the application "MFI_Simulator.exe" because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X. Can someone assist. I have Office for Mac 2011 on MacBook Pro 13''.

You can’t open the application “MFI_Simulator.exe” because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on OS X. Can someone assist. I have Office 2011 on my MacBook Pro, OS X, 10.9.1.

Your Office 2011, though a Microsoft product, is designed to work with OSX the Mac operating system.  Any program/application ending .exe is an executable program for Windows.  It will only work in Windows and is not part of or openable with Microsoft Office.
the application you want to open needs Windows - you have a couple of alternatives:
Open it on a Windows PC
Install a valid version of Windows via Bootcamp (or Parallels or VM Fusion) which will allow you to boot your Mac into Windows where it will function like a Windows PC and you can use it to run the application.
See if the manufacturers of MFI_Simulator have a Mac version available.
Please note that if you follow the second option, then you will need to purchase a copy of Windows (if you do not have one already). BootCamp is free (part of OSX) but Parallels and VM Fusion cost too.  I see quite a few posts from people who buy Parallels and try to run the program under Parallels - this doesn't work - you need to install Windows as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't open Word docs after updating to Pages 5.1

Can't open Word docs after updating to Pages 5.1. Have newest Mavericks OS.

I could open .doc and .docx files when I originally purchased Pages 4.3 in July 2013. After software was updated to 5.1 January 2014 I can no longer open any .doc or .docx files. Now, when I try to open one, is says for example: "PET.doc" can't be opened.
**You, know what? I just tried to save a pages document and it won't even let me do that. Saying I don't have permission to move. I double checked my sharing & permissions and that's not the problem. I can't even export the file to anything else (pdf, word, etc). Says the same thing: "Document.pages couldn't be moved because you don't have permission to access folder. To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info."
So it seems the entire app is crap. Although like I said it worked fine pre-update.

  • Word for windows

Hi. I know thta this topic has nothing to do with the macintosh, but I need your help anyway: does someone know what kind of extension uses the program word for windows 7.0?
    Thx.

    Jenny,
The cool thing about Word is you can save in a number of different extensions. .doc is the default but you can specify what you want when you do the initial save or do a save as.
Whwn you do the initial save a window will open. In the Format: line click on the button and you'll see all of the formats available. This'll also work when you do a save as.

  • I can't open iTunes in Windows 7

I can't open iTunes in Windows 7 even I download the latest version.
    (iPhone is iOS 5.0.1)
It's 64-bit Windows 7 and every time I clicked "Agree" in tthe software license, it doesn't work.
Then the PC helping centre shows the following sentence:
"iTunes can not work normally anymore.iTunes has the latest version to download, this will solve the problem.Apple Inc. suggest you to upgrade to newest version of iTunes, to improve the safety and stability."
This shows for many times and I keep upgrade iTunes. How to  solve this problem?
P.S. Sorry for any grammatical and spelling mistakes. The sentence is translated by me from Chinese, hope you can know what I mean.

There are various things this could be. First restart you computer
Check to see if you QUicktime works as iTunes can't work without it. If it doesn't work, describe what happens.
Then run a virus and spyware scan as malware has been known to do this.
Then check to see if disabling your forewall allows iTunes to start, this hasn't been seen for a while, but in the past firwall blocking has caused iTunes to hang.
    Then work through this Apple help on troubleshooting launch failures;

  • I can't open the inspector window in iMovie 11.

Hi everyone. I'm working on a project in iMovie 11 and suddenly I can't open the inspector window. I really can use some help. Maybe by mistake I hit a button. Thanks

Normally you open the inspector by clicking on the little gear icon in a clip. If that is not working, I would suggest...
    1) Shut down iMovie.
    2) Trash the iMovie Preferences. See this post for instructions.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4061
    3) If that still does not work, delete the iMovie App and reinstall from the App store.
    4) If that still does not work, reinstall OSX.

  • After installing Acrobat 8, can only open Word in safe mode

After installing Acrobat 8, can only open Word in safe mode. If I delete my customized Normal.dot, then all is well. However I want the macros available from the customized Normal.dot. I tried switching Templates after opening Word and it immediately triggers an error message: "Word has encountered a problem and needs to close." It then recovers all my recent documents even though they were fine, had no need to be saved. Thinking that Normal.dot had been corrupted, I went back to the original M$ Normal.dot and re-created my macros and saved as a new Normal.dot. The next time I open Word, I get the error message.
I have a template with only one macro. It does not cause this problem. The template I prefer has 3 macros and I will need to create more.
Acrobat 8 Prof. with all updates
    Windows XP
Word 2003 SP 3 with updates
Thank you in advance for any help you may give.

I am told by my company's IT folks that the problem resides with Office 2003 sp3. If you remove SP3 and revert to SP2, the issue vanishes, so they say (I have not done it yet).
M$ is possibly ignoring the issue permanently, since they are on a new initiative to unseat PDF in favor of their own document format they're working on presently. I've sent a million error reports to them and....NOTHING.
    Good luck.
