HELP - Can't update 3G iPod, ergo can't import purchased iTunes music

I'm using iPod 2.2 software and I recently purchased two audiobooks on iTunes. The books won't import into my iPod because, according to iTunes, my iPod OS is too old. So I went to apple.com to dowload the latest iPod update but it won't install because: "this update must be installed on a volume with Mac OS 10.2.8 or higher." I am confused by this since I'm using OS X 10.4.3 on my computer. One problem might be that the orginal 2.1 iPod OS was installed on an older Mac 2 years ago. But, I had no trouble upgrading to iPod 2.2 a while back.
I thought I would wipe my iPod and start from scratch but this did not work either. In trying to install the iPod 2.1 software I got the following error message: "iPod 2.1 Software cannot be installed on this computer. This update requires the Mac OS X Networking Update." I searched apple.com for this update and could not find anything.
I'm extremely frustrated. Apple keeps referring me to the 5 R's which is no help to me whatsoever.
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I solved this problem...it was a silly mistake on my part. When going through the iPod Updater installation process I assumed that the update was to be installed directly to my iPod. I decided to actually read the instructions which clearly state to first install the iPod Updater to the start-up disk and then go into the /Applications/Utilities/iPod Software Updater folder on the start-up disk and install the update onto the iPod from this location.
It worked fine.
