HELP! Cannot Compress Footage to Single Layer DVD...

Here's my problem.
I cannot compress footage to single layer DVD. I'm trying to make a DVD with motion menus and a full length feature. TRT 1 hr 47 min 3 sec. I compressed the video and audio using compressor after it did not fit on one single layer DVD the first attempt. The file sizes of the newly compressed video and audio are adequate to fit on the 4.7GB DVD but after importing the into DVD Studio Pro 4 (DSP4) the disc size comes out to 5.1GB. After DSP4 does its own encoding the file sizes double. I cannot figure this out. Please help.

AS per David suggestion, get yourself on A.Pack and convert your audio to Ac3.
a link to explain how to use A.pack for a dvd project (providing that you have A.pack still, otherwise you will have to use Compressor, depending what version of the suite you have.
Still this link will help you both:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/Tutorials/ProV1/FCP.multi-channel.htm
Depending on your version of Compressor, you may have A pack or you may not...
An AIFF File could increase your project by a gig...
There shouldn't be any problem in fitting that size project on a single layer project...

  • PP3 CS3 EXPORT HALF FILE SIZE ONLY ,SHRINKEN FILES FIT SINGLE LAYER DVD ONLY

    Hi!
I've regently upgraded up PP3 CS3 , Which was exported half of the files size only . I created 1 hour video/audio project on PP3 , then EXport to Encore CS3 , and check Encode setting , at the bottom right side ( ESTIMATE FILE SIZE) is about 2200 MG .Event I switched Sinle layer or Dual layer the files size Estimated the same amounth .
I created anather 2 hour video/audio project,Exprt to Encore cs3 , Estimate file size about 4 gitbite , It fited single layer 4.7 dvd only
The DVD quality play back on DVD player is only half of the original footage .
Encore cs3 is the same issue , when I forced double file to 8 gibite to burn dual layer DVD . It got error (unlimited of disc).
I could not find any setting to make it work on PP3 cs3 and Encore cs3
I have previous PP2 , It could not build straigh 2 hour DVD , But It could make 1 hour each time with original my footage or very close I'm happy with that ,Build ISO folder , each file is about 4 gibite then I used 3rd party software NERO 7. put 2 DVD together about 8 gibite and burn to Dual layer DVD
I red manual book on page 42 encore cs3 , they do not make daul layer
I paid upgraded PP3 CS3 and paid full price Encore 3 . They 're not worth what I invested ,
Any help will be wellcome . Thank you

    Hi Millaard
I repeated again build my project in PP3 1 hour and 8 munite long video , Exprot Encore , I selected following setting as Type : DVD doule layer,
    Direct burn without menus
Encoding setting : Preset :NTSC progressive high quality
    or Medium qality
Video codec : Main concept MPEG VIDEO
    Birates setting : VBR , 1 pass
    minimum : 1.5
    target : 4.
    Max : 7.
    GOP : M frame 3
    M frame 15
Estimate files size : 2684.98 Mb
That 's all the setting I did , Whatever I swicthed single layer or double layer , the export file estimate no change .
If I tried longer video 2 hour , the estaimate file size is about 4. MG ,PP3 shrinken video file to fit single layer DVD 4.7 . The file size of 2 hour dvd good quality is about 8 gibite for dual layer DVD
The other option in PP3 did not work for any 3rd party sofwarer ,
It did not build ISO folder , and MPEG2 dvd did not build Video-ts at the root of dvd folder ,and both video and audio is splited could not use third party software , they exprot to Encore cs3 only
Then Encore did not burn more than 4.7 single dvd for 2 hour long half of quality
Millaar ; Please tell me what's your setting? and how many mb did you build on sing or dual layer ? Have you tried any yet ? Thank you

  • Project to big for a single layer dvd??

    HI Guys,
My source file is a PAL dv quicktime that is 1 hour and 25 mins. I have encoded the file in compressor as an mpeg 2 5.0 mbps which was a preset in compressor for a timeline of up to 120 min. My source file is 85 min. Once imported into DSP I have had an error saying the project is to large for the single layer dvd I am trying to put it on. I already had an encoded version of the file that was made in DSP at the default SD settings, 4.0 mbps I beleive, so I put that back on my timeline and am still getting the same error message.
My compessor created file is 2.96 gig for the video, audio 928mb, the dvd studio pro files are; vid 2.37 aud 928mb
Any suggestions to help sort this are appreciated.
    Thanks, Adam.

Try to convert the audio to AC3 file, that should be a quick fix.
Do you have motion menus or any other elements? 2.96 and 928 should bring you in fine (take a look here http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_2.php - which way are the numbers - the larger or smaller when using Get Info?)

  • DL DVD to single layer DVD

Is it possible to copy a DVD DL to two single layer DVDs (to install Leopard onto a non-DL optical drive)?

There are utilities that can compress video DVDs, but it won't matter in this case. Even if you did what you are trying to accomplish, the OS Installer doesn't 'know' that the data is split onto two disks, and therefore won't be able to complete the install.

  • Making 8gb dvd onto single layer dvd with popcorn?

I know you can compress a dual layer dvd using popcorn to fit onto a single layer dvd.
Is there any way to make a 4.7 or larger dvd WITHOUT burning it to a dual layer dvd, but sending it to your HD then using Popcorn to compress it and then record it to a single layer disk?

    Hi gecko,
If you have a supported DL burner, then yes, you can set your project size to 8GB, use File > Save As Disk Image to create a 8GB disk image file, then use Popcorn to compress it to fit into a SL DVD.

  • Burning hd dvd on single layer dvd

I have just burned my first hd dvd onto a normal single layer dvd and it works beautifully on my Mac but does not play in any hd dvd player I could find to test in South Africa, neither in my friends' pcs. What is wrong?

I had a good look at the article on macvideo.co.uk and I am going to try what is described there.
Meanwhile, I was thinking of a backup option in case the hd dvd does not work. It is to play the hd movie directly on the pc connected to the large hd flat screen 1920 x 1080 pixels.
As a Mac user, I don't know well what is the best format to export the hd movie to get the best results. Any suggestion?
And also what special player or add-on do I need to play the movie on the pc under windows?

  • Backup Leopard Disk on Single Layer DVD

I have a leopard disk with the original 10.5.0. I want to make a copy on a single layer disk. I followed the instruction here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/431468/Guide-to-making-a-SLDVD-Leopard-install-disc
Everything works fine without a hitch. After I burn the disk it mounts fine and appears bootable in the startup preference pane, however, when I attempt to boot from it, (by restarting and holding the "C" key or holding the "option" key to select the disk) it does not appear as bootable. If I hold the "C" key it sounds like its scanning the disk, then it just boots from my hard drive. Also, if I hold the "option" key, only my OSX and Windows partitions appear, not the inserted Leopard copy. Please NOTE FOUR things, I want to have this on a disk, so please do not suggest restoring to an EXT HD or flash drive. Also, I have attempted the burning process with Disk Utility and Toast. I am using DVD-R disks and 10.5.7 on a Unibody MacBook Pro
    Thanks for the help,
    Macguy3000

Since this is not supported by Apple, I suggest you contact whoever published this and ask them why it does not work.
Your self-imposed limitations preclude doing it correctly.

  • Maximum Duration on single-layer DVD?

Does anyone know the maximum duration or movie file size that can fit onto a regular single-sided DVD when producing a DVD in DVD Studio Pro?
I poked around using various search terms but found nothing.
    thank you!
    r

As Eric said, you can really fit loads onto a DVD-R if you compress it hard enough. You can even use MPEG1 and get even more on there, although the final quality won't be great. Compress all images, audio to AC3 and so on too - it's all about how small the 'fixed' assets are, how much space you have to play with and how to compress the video you've got so that it fits into that space.
I have never seen a precise rule for fitting video to a disc... If you want 3 hours, use AC3 at 192Kbps and compress at around 3.15Mbps and it should work. If you want 4 hours, drop the compression to 2.3Mbps... remember that the lower you go, the poorer the final result.
How about using Half D1 compression? Tools like Bitvice can create this - you get a better quality than MPEG1 (IMO) and yet about the same file size.

  • Helpful info on burning to dual layer DVD's

I had posted a couple of questions two weeks ago re: burning an idvd project to a dual layer DVD. Was successful in the end. Further to this, Larry Jordon's December newsletter (www.larryjordon.biz) includes a very informative article on burning dual layer DVD's. I recommend it highly. Each of his monthly newsletters have a lot of helpful tips on fcp etc. (and no, my last name isn't Jordon!!)

Just for future reference, the correct address is: http://www.larryjordan.biz/. There was one letter off in the original posting.

  • Help! Can't Burn Double Layer DVD

I bought some Double Layer DVD+ DVDs to archive photos and other files for storage in my safe deposit box. When I try to burn the DVD from the finder I get the message that an unexpected error has occurred. The disk does not even get burned. I can reinsert it into the internal DVD drive and it shows up as a blank DVD. The following is from my system profiler:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845:
    Firmware Revision: DBN9

    Cache: 2048 KB

    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
How can I archive the files to a DVD +R DL disk?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the advice. However, I bought these DVDs at a closeout sale. They are labeled "Comp USA" who has gone out of business. I bought a spindle of 20 DVDs for $9.95. I wonder why the DVD burner is so particular?

  • Help fitting project on single layer DVD.

A little confused on how this adds up.
My DVD size is 395.4MB with all my menus, and AC3 audio with NO VIDEO.
When I add my video, which is 4.08GB to the timeline, my project goes up to 4.9 GB. Shouldn't it be around 4.5 total? Does DVD studio only add up what's in use in the assets window?
    Thanks!

Factor in the size of the audio of your movie, if you have not already.
Keep in mind that if you use any of the stuff in the palette - shapes, buttons, etc. - DVDSP will render motion mpegs for the entire duration of the menu, even if the background is still. This may also be the case if you use DVDSP to composite multiple photoshop layers in the background.

  • Urgent HELP Needed Compressing 24 fps file to DVD m2v

I am working in a project where all the source footage is 24fps film (in 720x486 uncompressed 8 bit QT files). I have edited the footage in FCP6 with the sequence at matching settings to the source footage. Every thing good so far.
I then export out a reference file of the final edit. Review the ref file and all is beautiful.
The problem occurs with I use compressor to convert the 24 fps to m2v. I use one of Apples default settings (DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes), drop the setting on the clip in the asset window and verify the settings, which in the summary show frame rate of 23.976. OK. Submit.
When the compression is complete, and I bring the new asset into DVDSP, the rate now shows 29.97 (open in QT confirms), and the clip stutters in play back.... i.e. dup frame every 5 frames. On the second try, I don't get dup frames, but I actually got frames dropped every few seconds. i.e. frame advance in DVDSP and the video would skip a frame. The later is extremely noticeable on panning shots.
Can any one give me some advice on how to keep the video smooth and consistent with the original footage?
Any help or suggestions would be EXTREMELY appreciated as this project HAS to go to press tomorrow.
    Thanks,
    Gary

OK, After a very long night with no end near, I figured out the drop frames are the result of feeding 24fps into Compressor instead of 23.98.
I took the footage conformed the clips to 23.98 and that particular problem was resolved....
However, conforming introduced a whole new problem: When I conform the clips, 2 black frames are introduced at EXACTLY frame 7900. I have 4 tracks of similar footage, with different language tracks. There are English, French, Spanish and German sequences. The German track is edit differently than the other 3 due to very different timing in the translation. The other three are virtually identical to the point where the black frames are introduced.
That being said, ALL 4 tracks have the black frames appear at frame 7900 regardless of the video content.
These are NTSC (720x480 24 fps with uncompressed 8 bit video).
Oddly enough, if I drop the NTSC sequence onto a PAL 24fps uncompress 8 bit sequence, the black frames do not seem to appear after the PAL tracks are conformed to 25 fps. I have not found any anyway....
Any thoughts on why I am getting this problem?
As a result, we have had to postpone the glass mastering, and needless to say, the producer is not at all pleased...
    Thanks for any input.
    Gary

  • Cannot burn photos to dual-layer DVD

I'm trying to use iPhoto's Share->Burn menu, on a recent Mac Pro. It doesn't get far before failing the burn (I don't think it burns any data at all).
    The error I get is:
    Burn Failed
The burn to the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A drive failed. Double Layer transition point has already been specified; it cannot be changed.

I have rebooted and tried three DVD+R DL discs of two different brands.
No idea what to look at next. Help!

Hi. I am having the same problem. I have already done one backup and I want to do an incremental backup, but when I insert the DL+ disc it tells me that I will need 14 disc. My itunes is only 6.5 gigs?
    I think it's a bug.

  • I want to install osx 10.5 server on emac g4 but a single layer dvd is smal

hello i want to install osx 10.5 server edition on my emac g4 for learning purposes but 1 dvd is to small to burn osx 10.5 to so my question what must i do to get osx 10.5 server on my emac g4?

Most Macs with DVD readers can READ Dual-layers, even if they cannot write them. Try the original dual layer release disc, and I expect that you will be pleasantly surprised that it can be read.
If you have 10.5 already installed, there is usually a .mpkg file on the release disc that can add only the Server additional software to a working 10.5.

  • Changing from Single Layer DVD to DVD+R

when I open Project Info Window in iDVD to change the type of DVD I'm using, I can't open the drop down window for DVD type. What am I doing wrong? or How do I get the DVD type to work?

    Hi
It's not iDVDs faulth. It is depending on Your DVD-burner.
Most Mac burners are DVD-R burners but some can also burn to DVD+R.
Go to "About this Mac" then select "More info"
Now find Your DVD-burner and read what it can address.
