HELP! Cannot copy files off Time Capsule

I have a 1TB Time Capsule (DualBand) that I use like a NAS (network attached storage). Time Machine is disabled, but I manually copy files on the Time Capsule's disk when I want to back them up, and share them with other computers in my house.
I am trying to copy all of the files of the Time Capsule to a 2 TB Firewire 800 drive connected to my MacBook Pro, but I'm having a problem. About half-way through the the copy process (which is estimated to be an over-night ordeal) the Time Capsule is disconnected and I get the error:
+The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data+
+in "" could not be read or written.+
+(Error code -36)+
Also, the disconnected Time Capsule is still visible in the SHARED portion of my Finder's sidebar, but it is impossible to connect to the disk again, unless I unplug the Time Capsule and power it back up.
Every time I try the process, I receive the same error, and have to restart my Time Capsule again. Could someone please help me get my data off my Time Capsule? I would prefer not to have to resort to ripping it open, so I can put the drive into my USB Toaster.
NOTE: I've tried repairing disk permissions on my MBP and repairing disk on my 2TB external drive. I've found no way to do any of these kinds of things on the Time Capsule's internal disk.

I don't have a direct solution to your disconnection problem, but if your 2 TB drive has a USB port, you may be able to connect it to your Time Capsule and use the "Archive" function (in AirPort Utility's Disks/Disks panel) to copy that data from the Time Capsule disk.

• Can't copy files to time capsule

I need some help with my new 2TB Time Capsule. I setup the time capsule and did my first time machine backup. Now I want to copy over additional files to time capsule from my full hard drive on my iMac. When I drag files over the following message occurs "The item “FILE NAME” can’t be moved because “Time Capsule” can’t be modified."
I went into my aiport utilities -- opened up my time capsule -- went to disks -- clicked file sharing -- and the enabled file sharing box is checked.
Help! How do I move files to my time capsule.
Thanks in advance

From post above: "Now I want to copy over additional files to time capsule from my full hard drive on my iMac"
I'm sorry for the confusion. My device is called "Time Capsule" --- How do I remedy the error I am receiving?
"The item “FILE NAME” can’t be moved because “Time Capsule” can’t be modified."
This error occurs when I am drag a document from my iMac hard drive to my time capsule (which technically has another name).

• Help - "Cannot copy file: Data error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)"

Hey there,
I'm having problems with my Zen Mosaic EZ00. Up until a few weeks ago it has been working fine however, since then, has begun to show the error message? "Cannot copy file: Data error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)" whenever I try to copy files on to it. I have tried the recovery software available and it only updated the firmware. Some files do occasionally (and very occasionally) copy but usually it shows the error message and cancels the copy.
I would really appreciate if anyone could help me with this?
Many thanks :smileytongue:

sorry for the double post!
ive just realised that my ipod isnt actually charging, its just got the orange light blinking!
not too sure what is going on now!

• Having trouble copying files to time capsule.

Hello all. Apologies if this isn't in the correct forum. I didn't see one for the time capsule. And thanks in advance for any help.
I recently purchased a new macbook pro after my old macbook pro had a lot of issues. (It had a good run, but was probably 3-4 years old.)
I was trying to copy some files from the old computer to the new computer using my time capsule as an external hard drive. I don't have a firewire cord, and the migration assistant program seemed to take far too long. So I'd hoped to just copy the files onto the time capsule, then copy them onto my new computer.
However, I've encountered several problems. A message will pop up, error -36, and state that some files cannot be copied. Rather than not copy those and copy the rest of the files, the whole process stops. I cannot go through and pick out the individual files, because I can't tell what's causing the problem until the error actually occurs.
Any advice on how to get around this? Or am I missing an easier way to transfer data (such as an itunes library)?
Thanks.

For future reference, it's hiding in the +Digital Life > Airport and Time Capsule+ section.

Were you connected to the old Mac via Ethernet? That's slow, but doable.

Yes, that's why Apple invented +Setup Assistant+ and +Migration Assistant.+

Your best bet will be to get a firewire cable and start over. Anything else will be tedious, likely have permissions problems, and be easy to miss things.
Since you've already got who knows what copied, your best option is probably to set up a temporary Admin account, log on with it and delete the one(s) you created. Be sure to delete the home folder(s), too, when prompted.
Then connect the Macs via FireWire and run +Migration Assistant.+ See: [Using Migration Assistant|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Migrate.html]

• Cannot drag files to Time Capsule

Trying to drag files from my Documents map to my Time Capsule map but do not succeed. File Sharing in the Disks section of Airport Utility is tagged to enable file sharing with Time Capsule password. When dragging and dropping, no password is requested, no error message is produced, not is any sound made. Somebody in another discussion suggested to double click on the Time Capsule icon in the left column, which would produce maps (subdirectories) in the same column, after which files could be dragged to these maps, however when double clicking on the Time Capsule icon, maps only show up in the right column of Finder. Please help.

So it seems I can no longer drag and drop like I used to, but copy and paste seems to do the trick. So, in a way, problem solved.

• Cannot access files on Time Capsule

Cannot acess files on the TC HDD anymore. The TC HDD appears on the left panel in Finder, but if I doubleclick the disk, the TC drops connection and restarts. Soft, hard and factory resets of the TC did not help.
Last months the TC has always dropped connection or acess to the HDD but a soft reset helped every time.
File sharing in Airport Utility is on.
The TC router works good and I have acess to the Internet as long as it restarts.
Is there any chance to restore my data from the TC? All the media files have been stored there.
Using Lion, TC 7.5.2.
Thanks in advance for your hints

I don't have a guaranteed solution to your problem, just some suggestions:
1) Try powering down the Time Capsule for at least 15 minutes, then plug it in again and see if it works better.
2) If you suspect that heat might be a problem, try raising the Time Capsule to give better air flow below it. I have mine on an inverted plastic-coated-wire basket of the type used to organize kitchen drawers.
3) If AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule, you should be able to use the "archive" function (in the Disks panel, Disks tab) to write the disk's contents to a drive connected to the Time Capsule's USB port.
4) In the worst case, you should be able to access the files on the Time Capsule's disk by opening up the Time Capsule, removing the disk drive, mounting the drive in an external enclosure, and attaching the enclosure to your Mac.

• Can i pull just one file off time capsule?

I have successfully used my airport time capsule to transfer all information from my old Mac to my new Mac but somehow in the new iTunes update, I lost a video located in home movies. Is there a way to go into time capsule to retrieve only one file? Fortunately I had another external hard drive back up and was able to get this one, but wondering if I should keep using another external hard drive as a second back up.

Files that are held in libraries cannot be recovered without recovering the whole library.. that is not the fault of Time Machine or the TC.. it is the way apple structure its files now.
See the info from pondini on restoring files.
Q15 here.
http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I think in our present state of affairs with TM becoming less than reliable.. I would encourage everyone to use a bootable clone.. eg Carbon Copy Cloner which will hold the files in the identical manner to your hard disk.. if a file is lost from your hard disk boot from the clone and you can then extract it from the library.. but it works differently and so changes will be made to the backup as they happen on the computer.. therefore it is important to also keep libraries in separate backups.

• Trouble accessing files from/copying files to Time Capsule

I'm having two issues which I haven't seen on the forums.
1. When I try to open a file stored on the TC, I get an error message: "Connection failed...There was an error connecting to the server...etc...," however, as soon as I close that warning box, the file opens. So at least I can get the files open, but I get that annoying message every time I go to open a file.
2. When I try to copy a large file to the TC, the file will look like it's completely copied over, but it actually is only partially copying and is unopenable.
I did not notice these issues before installing Snow Leopard, so I'm guessing it's related, but thought I'd try here. Thanks for any ideas...

To start with moving the Time Machine backup as you have requested is not a case of simple copy and paste.. TM does not backup on network drives in the same way as it does on local drives. You can much more easily move the Network backup to the local drive than visa versa as you are wanting to do.. IMHO don't bother.. keep the 1TB drive for a few months until you build up a complete backup history on the TC.. from that point you are unlikely to need earlier backups and you can wipe them.
If you wish to try the details are here.
http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
See Q18.
Apparently this does not even work anymore with Mavericks and especially Yosemite.. so do not be surprised if after spending a day or two copying the TM backup to the TC it then refuses to connect.. and you have to scrub it and start a new clean backup anyway.
Can I have the Time Capsule be wireless for my internet connection AND mount the internal drive via ethernet to do the file transfer?
You can do this and we recommend it for first backup to the TC.. which is very large and should be the best as this first backup is then the basis for every increment thereafter.. TM never completely wipes this first backup.
It is easy.. plug the computer into the TC by ethernet.. and turn off the wireless.. then do the backup.. once completed.. disconnect the ethernet and turn the wireless back on.

• Cannot copy files from Time Machine

Hi,
I wanted to trash all my Time Machine Files yesterday but when I tried to empty the trash, my Mac started to count all the files on the trash for so long that I decided to undo that. So, I opened the trash and decided to move back again all my Time Machine back up files into the original disk where they where. My Mac started to count all the files and it did not stopped since then? What can I do to resolve this issue, since my Mac has been counting files since very late last night and it's been doing this ever since: it's been counting for at least one day?
Can I stop the process and do something else, I would not like to damage my disk or something else. I know I should have taken a «reformat» option instead but right now I do not know if I can stop this process or should I let it run for I do not know how long???
Please help!
Thanks
Robert

Hi,
After consideration of all this precious time spent, I've decided finally to call at Apple support even if my Apple Care coverage had expired for so many years. The 35$ fee for a month services was largely worth the call and the service I received... So, with the help of a well trained expert, I got the job done very fast et efficiently! Mind you, I had to insist to be in the hand of a good expert before doing anything, this was a "must" in my case...
After explaining my problem to this expert I realized that I was in good hands: he knew what was the problem and he really made my call worth all the money. I agreed to share my screen with him and we started with Terminal.
First:
I emptied the trash by typing the proper command in Terminal. I tried it before but it wasn't working since all my backup files from Time Machine where not on my local disk, they where on another internal disk. With his help, I identified the proper disk and when Terminal executed the command, it was done in no time. Sweet, no more counting! But my files where still on the trash, no one could tell how long this would take to trash everything. I had a zillion files in my Backup from Time Machine!
Second:
So, I asked my expert: "since we don't know how long will this process will take, will reformatting the disk, be better and will this save time? Is it possible since all my files on this disk are in the trash? He said: "Yes it will work even if your files are in the trash". Ok, let's do it! So, I've stopped the process after a few minutes and started Disk Utility. I then identified the volume and hit the "erase" button.
Voilà, the job was done perfectly after 2 minutes, my disk was clean.
Conclusion:
Is it both actions that did the job, I cannot say. But in my case, it worked perfectly. I know, I should have reformat my disk first, it would have save me so much time.
May my mistake serve other users in the futur! If anyone would like the command codes I used in Terminal, feel free to ask.
Live long and prosper Mr. Technician!
Robert M.

• Problem deleting locked files copied to my Time Capsule

I'm having difficulty deleting some locked files buried in nested directories that I copied to my Time Capsule. The usual procedure for recursively unlocking them using Get Info on the parent directory doesn't work because the lock icon in the bottom right corner of the get info window is absent regardless of whether I login as an admin or as root. After a couple of discussions with Apple Upper Level support, my options are to individually unlock each file (which will take forever with 350+ GB) or to reformat the disk and thereby lose the sparse bundle backups for my two Macs which I want to avoid. I can always write off those 350 GB and live with the remaining space, but I know there must be another way. Anyone have any ideas? I'm wondering if its possible to login as root and use a terminal window to mount the Time Capsule partition, change to the parent directories and recursively change the file permissions (chmod 777), and then recursively delete the files (rm -r). Apple support couldn't help me with this and it's been awhile since I've used unix, but if I can get a little help, I think this should work. Worse case scenario I end up reformatting the disk and lose my backups, assuming I don't blow away any files required to erase and reformat the disk. Any unix gurus out there that can help an old dweeb find his way? Thanks.

Thanks for the windows suggestion. I may be able to scare up an old Windows XP laptop but I'm not sure how I would connect the TC to it. Will windows recognize the TC via an Ethernet connection? Also, I think windows may be the original culprit as I ran across an old post with a similar issue:
"I copied folders + files from an old PC external hard drive onto my Time Capsule and now want to delete them (send them to the trash can). The files have been deleted but the empty folders remain with the following message: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." Time Capsule does not show up on Disk Utility. There is only one user id on my computer (that's me) with read write & access. Get Info on the undeletable Folders does not indicate that they are locked. I suspect it may have something to do with legacy permissions from the old PC but Apple tells me these should be reset when the files are copied across."
I see the same error message and I'm certain there are lots of windows files buried in my directories.

• HT201250 Can i store my files on time capsule from my ipad, and copy them back, without using itunes to sync the tablet?

Can i store my files on time capsule from my ipad, and copy them back, without using itunes to sync the tablet? i want to buy an iPad Air and to forget my laptop and i think that even the 128 gb wont be enough some times. I am wandering if time capsule can be used as external hdd and to connect on it via wifi ...

No. You cannot access your Time Capsule directly from an iOS device. The only way to back up an iOS device is to a computer through iTunes or to iCloud, though in some cases you can open and save files via another cloud-based service such as Dropbox.
Regards.
