Help, cannot download software updates after HD erased!

Hello community,
Back story: I'm an ISM major, so I'm typically pretty good with computers. I've also played with some torrents and I understand the risks that come with them but I'm someone who does my research before downloading. Well, I have Leopard (running 10.6.3 currently) and obviously, I kept up to date all the way up to 10.6.8. However, I wanted to get Lion so I downloaded a copied version of the "App Store" version of OS X Lion. This is where the issue begins. I started downloading then in the middle of the download it says cannot continue, hard drive has an issue or has failed (something of that nature).
Issue: So, I erased my HD completely. It was the only option, especially since I lost my original Macbook Pro discs (2008 version Macbook). I erased it, even the Apple guy on the phone agreed that if I did this I should be good to go. Well, I'm not. I'm trying to get back to 10.6.8 so I can start recooping all my lost stuff but when it goes to download the combo update it always stops midway through saying "cannot connect to server" or "update may be corrupt," etc. I don't understand the issue...this may as well be a brand new computer again, no? I'm very computer savvy but this is just boggling my mind. I've searched hundreds of topics and nothing works. For the longest time I was getting "invalid checksum." SO, I erased my HD again, don't get that anymore, and now I'm back to the "update corrupt" issue.
Someone please help me, I'll be checking this every couple minutes all night. I couldn't get a Genius appointment until Thursday so I'm trying to just fix this myself.
PS: Everything works fine, I can download everything as usual, etc. I literally just cannot get any Apple stuff. I've even tried downloading it from the page to avoid the "Software Update App" and it still screws up.
Thanks!

I have Leopard (running 10.6.3
Leopard is 10.5.x, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard.
I wanted to get Lion so I downloaded a copied version of the "App Store" version of OS X Lion
Wouldn't work even if it downloaded succesfully, Lion & up are internally keyed to UUIDs, Apple IDs, & more.
Try the 10.6.8 Update directly...

    Hi,
Are you connected to a Wi-Fi network? If not this may be the reason why.

  • Cannot Install Software Update after a Clean Install

I did a clean install of 10.5. I ran the initial Software Update and proceeded to install all the available updates including Version 10.5.4. I installed some software and later did another Software Update check. There were 2 more updates available.
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 adds support for Java SE 6
    Security Update 2008-005 (Leopard)
I rebooted the iMac as requested and the Software Update window appeared. I checked both updates and proceeded. The progress bar proceeded about 1/8 of the way with the message Installing 2 items.... Configuring Installation. This appeared to hang there and I left it running overnight. When I looked at it again, the progress bar had not moved. I then tried each one separately, still using the Software Update. Same problem only that the Java update showed the progress bar 1 / 2 the way and is hanging there.
I verified the disk and it was okay. I have used the iMac for almost 2 years and have never had a problem with the Software Update.
Here is the last entry in the install log which seems to indicate the install was done, but the Software Update Window is still there with the "Installing 1 Item" message and I cannot stop the process or force quit it.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I guess I should be careful how I word my posts.
I should have said I resolved the problem that I had. The solution to the problem was to do a manual download of the updates. That worked without a hitch and while solving the immediate problem did not help me understand why automatic updates failed to properly install the identical files.

It is a relatively new iMac purchased from Apple in early 07. Yes, it was a a Retail Version of OS X 10.5 that I purchased when I upgraded 10.4, I have seen this problem many times in Windows, but never experienced it in the almost 2 years of mac usage. I guess I am not the only one having problems as there is a similar post made several hours after mine.

  • Cannot download software updates

For quite some time now, I have not been able to download software and/or updates from various websites. For example, I have just tried to download Firefox from the Mozilla website. When I click on the hotlink, it circles back to the main page without downloading anything. I have reset my Safari browser (as well as IE 5.2 - it happens with both) to download to the desktop, with no success.
When I hold the CTRL key down and force it to save to disk, I do get an icon, but when I click it I get nothing but a modified, text only version of the download web page.
I have run disk repair and restarted the machine, but the problem still exists.
I have experienced this problem with trying to download Firefox, iPod updates, Windows Media Player updates, and some other third-party software programs.
Can someone tell me what I'm missing?

    Questions...
    1) Have you found any sites that do work?
    2) Are you using a proxy server at all? If so, have
you tried it without going through the proxy server?
    3) Can you get files via FTP?
    ~FifthWheel
Thanks so much for getting back to me.
1 - No. As a matter of fact, in response to your question #3 I tried to download an FTP app and ran into the exact same problem. I click the hotlink to download the software, and I loop back to the original screen with no other action.
2 - I don't think I'm using a proxy server (forgive my ignorance - I'm feeling my way through this). Under my network system preferences, I am using Passive FTP mode, with no proxy servers listed in the other windows.
3 - I never used an FTP app before. As I mention in item #1, I'm not able to get one at this point. Ironic, eh?
Let me know if you have any more thoughts or ideas. Thanks!

  • Cannot download Win Updates after Vista Reinstall on New HDD

    Hello!
This is what I have going on.....
Toshiba Satellite L305-S5942 original hdd crashed. Bought a new HDD and I've already installed Windows Vista Home. I was able to register my key and validate Windows. But now when I try to download the Windows Updates I get errors. I've researched the errors up until now. I've tried using FixIt and that didn't work. I've tried using the Readiness Tool and I get a "catastrophic error" error message. I've even tried downloading Vista SP2 standalong installer and I still can't get any updates.
I did see something about a Toshiba laptop owner having issues after reinstalling on a new drive and it said something about installing some driver called Intel Radid Storage Technology. I have not been able to anything about this anywhere else.
Does anyone have a solution for the issues I'm having? Does changing the HDD from original really affect me from getting Win Updates even after I've already validated my Windows Key?
    Solved!

Sounds like you have restored to a drive with advanced-format technology. What is the exact model of the drive? We'll look it up.
In the meantime, try installing this new storage driver.

  • Why does my iMac only have 1 GB of memory?  I hardly have anything on here.  I cannot download software update in order to get Turbo Tax to work.

Why does my iMac only have 1 GB of memory?

Put in more RAM. Visit OWC, DataMem, or Crucial.com to purchase memory for your model. You computer would have more memory had you put more in a long time ago.

No promises but a System Reset is worth trying:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.
Also, you might wish to download the iPad-2 User Guide.  Pay special attention to page 162.  Note that this Guide also applies to the iPad-1 with IOS 4.3 except for those functions that are not supported by the hardware.
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad
Finally, the User Guide can be downloaded at no charge via iBooks and a less comprehensive version of the Guide is included as a Safari bookmark.

  • ITunes won't open after downloading software update.  Macbook Pro OSX10.6.8  Simple solution?

iTunes won't open after downloading software update.  Macbook Pro OSX10.6.8  Simple solution?  And by the way, this is apparently a common problem and Apple has completely failed to warn in advance or offer a quick straightforward solution - used to be a good company, but it's becoming just another crappy screw-the-consumer corporation.

It would help to know versions here.  I'm guessing your update put an older version of something into a place where a newer version of something iTunes put in there existed.  Updating an earlier OSX version to 10.6.8 is still only updating to system software that was issued several years ago.  If you are running some slightly newer version of iTunes issued subsequent to 10.6.8 and you just updated to 10.6.8 you may have put in an older version of something iTunes uses.  Anyway, I'm guessing here until we know exactly what you did.

I cannot download nor update apps through Apps Store, error message states that app cannot be downloaded, to try again later, this has been happening for the  last five days. Help!
It started when tryung to update Twitter. Now the problem is with every app I try to update or download.

I have this issue as well. The App Store icon indicates there are updates available but when I open the app a popup says it can't connect to the store and the screen remains white. I have tried a hard reset (power & home button) and several other suggestions I have found throughout the forums here without success.

    From Apple Support...
Here are troubleshooting steps that should help you fix the problem.
    1) Quit App Store in multi-tasking.
    2) Tap Settings.
    3) Tap Safari.
    4) Tap Clear History.
    5) Tap the Clear History button.
    6) Tap Clear Cookies and Data.
    7) Tap the Clear Cookies and Data button.
Try purchasing an app again from the device to get the security question prompt. You really need to set up the security question.

  • HT4623 I am trying to update my 3GS but cannot find "software update" in general settings. Am I missing something?

I am new to the iphone world and have an older model (iphone 3GS).  I need to download ios5 and have checked out how to's but they all tell me to go to settings-general-software update.  I cannot find "software update" anywhere. Please help!!!!

Yes. You missed the part of that article which explains how to update it from iTunes on a computer; since it's running an iOS version prior to 5, it must be done from there.

  • Is there a way to 'manually' download software updates?

    Hi guys
I've just reinstalled OSX on my iMac due to some issues and have found that I can't install Aperture because it requires 10.6.2 and the OS I have is .1. Fine, so I install the software update, but when it is in the installing stage of the process when the computer is restarting, it says that it cannot be installed and that the download may be corrupted etc.
I have downloaded the item twice and have had the same response each time. So I was wondering if there's a way to download Software Updates manually from somewhere on Apple's site or something so I can try that instead.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks
    Steve.

Thanks, I'll try the combo update first. I'll make sure to Verify the disk first.
My internet connection is a Fibre-Optic broadband connection and I'm in Manchester, UK. There was some issues with downloading via Safari before, but now that's sorted out but the problem is persisting with the software update it seems. Hence why I'm trying it this way.
I'll let you know how I get on
