Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?
If you open Image Capture > Preferences is iPhoto selected as the choice when a camera is connected?

  • When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop.. won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not... need to fix this

When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop... won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not

If you are using Photoshop from within iPhoto the following may help with the workflow.  However, we do need to know the answers to the questions posed by Terence and Larry to be able to help you.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
    Screenshots are from PSE 10
Note 1:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
Note 2:  editing a RAW file with either PSE or PS creates a new file which must be saved outside of iPhoto, i.e. the Desktop, and imported as a new photo into the iPhoto Library.

  • I have moved my iPhoto to an external hard drive. so now I have to have the external hard drive connected to my laptop to view the photos.  Now when I want to import photos into iPhoto from my media card, I don't have room to connect both devices.

I have moved my iPhoto to an external hard drive. so now I have to have the external hard drive connected to my laptop to view the photos.  Now when I want to import photos into iPhoto from my media card, I don't have room to connect both devices at the same time as the usb ports are side by side.  How do I import my photos from the media card to the external hard drive now?

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

  • When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files:

When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I can open the JPG in question with PREVIEW, photoshop etc.. actually if I try to import a photo that I had originally imported it also fails..
    Please help... Thank you..

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.
I had 10 photos that were allegedly unreadable; however, as Terence rightly says, they are duplicates. When I opened iPhoto I mad a note of each of the files concerned and did a Spotlight search throughout my hard drive.
For each photo, there were four or five duplicates. I deleted all but one of each of the photos and then reopened iPhoto. No more error message.
The original problem stemmed from importing my files directly from an external device I was using with a previous computer [that was running XP].
    Anyway, hope this helps.

  • Cannot load photos onto iphoto from kodak easyshare

I previously was able to load my photos onty iphoto (version 2), now that I have connected a new external hard drive, iphoto recognizes the camera and the photos to be imported, but after it starts to import them a message comes up saying "cannot import photo..." and asks me to continue or stop. Help please

An easier way to upload your pics , would be to disable launching iPhoto when you camera is connected. and use a 2 step process to upload pics on an empty folder and then to iPhoto.
    - Do you see the camera icon on the desktop?
let me know if you want to know more!

  • Importing photos into iPhoto from Hard Drive

Mike just downloaded our back up onto our newish Mac after our Macbook bravely went to it's grave in coffee.    I'm now trying to import about 100 - 200G of photos into iPhoto from my hard drive.  I really do not want to spend the whole time selecting and dragging these pictures.  All that I read so far says that is the only way to get them off your hard drive.  Some one please rescue me and tell me there is another way!  Unfortunately I have already started a new photo album with pictures from my iPhone, so I can't just start a new album with these pics.  Thanks for any help I can get. ~Kari A.

first off do not import an old library into iPhoto - it does not work
If you have an old library you simply drag it to the new computer and launch iPhoto while depressing the option key to get the select library window and then select it - repeat to select a different library
If you have just the photos (not =an iPhoto library) then simply drag the folder of photos to iPhoto

  • Can't import photos to iPhoto from Lumix camera.

I just purchase a Panasonic Lumix Camera DMC-ZS20 and am trying to import my photos to iPhoto, but as soon as it starts preparing to import, iPhoto crashes. Do I need some special software or do I have some setting wrong?

What version of iPhoto are you running? 9.3 is the latest version and here is a link to upgrade to that version.
If you're running 9.3 and still crashing, I would suggest taking your question over to the iPhoto forum. We're just MacBook Pro users here and the real iPhoto experts (and I don't claim to be one!) hang out there.
    Good luck,

  • Cannot import photos into iPhoto - Unreadable format????

When I try to import photos from my Original iPhone to iPhoto (software 3.1.3) I receive an error message that says :
    Unreadable format:
The following files could not be imported. (The file is an unrecognized format.)
    IMG_0279.JPG
And lists all file names. I have imported pics from the phone many times in the past with no issues.
Please help! I really want to import these pics.

Thank you for your advice. I tried image capture and it will not import either. I know that I can email myself the photos and that is fine. My concern is that not one photo will import. I just took a new one to test. So I guess there is an issue with my phone or camera.

  • How do I import photos to iPhoto from a disk?

Hi,  I have tried multiple times to import photos from a disk off of an old (5 yrs old) Apple computer into my new (3 month old) Mac.  The only picture that will transfer is the first one.  I have put in the disk, "selected" all photos and tried to "import" photos.  It goes through saying that it is importing 300+ pictures but then the only one in the library is one photo.  What can I be doing wrong?   This seems so easy but it's driving me crazy!  Thanks for your help.

You may have trouble importing multiple photos off the disk for some reason. Try inserting your disk and after it appears on your desk top, open it and try clicking on a singel photo and dragging it onto your desk top. Then click on it and after opening iPhoto, click on the desk top photo and drag into iPhoto when you have "Photo" opened in iPhoto.
If that works and you cannot make the same proceedure work when you select multiple photos, you have a long road ahead just moving one photo at a time.
    Good luck...virg

  • Error message when importing photos into iPhoto from iPhone 4S

Why is this happening? This is the message I get when I now try to import my photos off my iPhone "ERROR DOWNLOADING IMAGE: iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image."  PLEASE HELP ASAP.  Thanks!

    Good afternoon
There seem to be a number of possibilities.
Here is a thread that conatins a number of solutions.  The most common one is to load 50 pics at a time.

  • Best way to import photos into iPhoto from apeture

    Hi
I imported all my photos from iPhoto to apeture a while back, and after using it for a year, have decided its not for me.
Now I want to import them all back into iPhoto from apeture, with preserved events (projects in apeture), metadata and quality.
Can anyone provide a step by step guide to do this easily and efficiently?
    Many thanks in advance
    Richard.

he only communication between the two is as follows:
Aperture is able to parse the iPhoto Library to allow it to import the contents while stacking the Originals and Modified versions, preserving metadata and so forth.
Aperture can share its Previews with the iLife apps, including iPhoto.
    That's it.
So, specifically, what interaction there is between the two is designed to facilitate migration from iPhoto to the more powerful app. After that, iPhoto has exactly the same relationship to the Aperture Library as, say, Pages or iMovie.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library.
    1. Export all your Masters
    2. Export all your Versions
You can write the metadata to the files on export - check out the Export presets. Note that you cannot export Faces. There is no convention for sharing Faces. The best you can do is use Faces as a basis for keywording.
Import them into iPhoto. Note that there is no way to associate the masters with the versions in iPhoto, so you'll have apparent duplicates.

  • TS1501 Image Capture does not launch when I connect my iPhone to my iMac and open iPhoto. No "Prefernces" is offered under Image Capture.  I cannot import photos to iPhoto.

Can't import photos from iPhone to iPhoto.  Image Capture does not launch when iPhone is connected to my iMac and iPhoto is open.  There is no "Preferences" option offered to click when in Image Capture.

This helped me. It is advice I found from a user named Carlosmara. First make sure iPhoto is closed and your iPhone is not connected. Then, as Carlosmara stated in his post,
"Go to your Library/preferences and delete the file com.apple.iPhoto.plist
IPhoto should recognized the iPhone again."
The file in question is under your user folder.
I then restarted my mac and plugged in the iPhone so that it would sync. After the sync, when I opened iPhoto, my iPhone was recognized and I could download the photos perfectly.
Hopefully this will help you as it helped me
