Help!! Cannot open Pages 09 document

When attempting to open a Pages09 document I've been working on, I get an error message saying the document couldn't be opened because... "The required index.xml file is missing."
I'm very new to the MacBook and pages. Can anyone tell me what this means and if there is any way to get the file opened again?

My guess is that it's one of the numerous corrupted documents.
Click my blue name to get my address.
Send the document as attachment to my box.
I will look in its internals to see if it may be recovered.
At this time, I'm aware of several kinds of corruption.
I reported them to Apple Bugs Hunters.
But, as imagination has no end, we may guess that you got a new kind of corruption, one never knows.
I repeat that the only available way to reduce the impact of this anomaly is to

I cannot open Pages documents that I have worked on and saved.  When I try to reopen Pages documents that I've saved, I get the following
    message:
"The document “[name of document]” could not be opened. The file isn’t in the correct format.
The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format."
I have downloaded the latest update to iWork, but that doesn't help.
    I use Mac OSX 10.6.7
    I am using Pages '09 version 4.0.5 (852)
If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Best regards,
    New York Mac User

A few general trouble shooting tips that may apply here:
    1. If you used Software Update to do the OS update(s) to reach 10.6.7, go to http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and download and apply the Mac OS v10.6.7 Combo Updater. The Combo Updater contains some fixes that were not included in the incremental updaters used by Software Update.
1a. Check that you have the current version of Pages (and of the other iWork applications) installed. All three applications' current version numbers end in .0.5
    2. A common cause of malfunctioning applications is a corrupted preferences file (.plist file). Your Pages '09's plist is at yourname > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iWork.pages.plist
Quit Pages, locate the file and Drag it to the Desktop (or to the Trash).
Restart Pages and attempt to open one of the files.
If all is well, Trash the plist file and empty the Trash.
If there's no change, AND you've made changes to the Preferences that you wish to keep, drag the file back to its previous location, replacing any new one that has been created.

  • Cannot open Pages Document

I cannot open an Pages document that a friend created on his Mac.  Somehow it got corrupted.  He made the document from a template I made for him.  I called Applecare and they couldn't help me.  We were able to open any other Pages documents I tried to open on my Mac; but not that one. Any suggestions?  Does anybody know about any programs that can be used to repair .pages documents?
    Thanks.

    Hi.
Thanks for responding to me.  I'm using Pages 5.2 (1860) and my friend was using the same version.  He told me that somehow the program changed the file name too.  I even tried changing the suffix in the file name from ".pages" to ".docx" and saw the jpeg images of the file. I could see on these jpegs that the document does exist.  Can you suggest any way I can repair the document?  Thanks again.

  • Cannot open Pages document in iCloud

    Hi all
I recently had to factory reset my iPad2 after a corrupted Apple software update. Fortunately almost everything was recovered via iTunes and iCloud backups. However, I am unable to access a very important Pages document (Pages docs were recovered from iCloud after the reset). It shows in pages but is misted out a little and it won't let me open it. When I look into iCloud I can see that the document is there and has content as the file size is 11mb but I am still unable to open it. It is many, many hours of work and I am desperate to retrieve the file if I can.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you
    Ross

Thank you for the reply Alfred.
The document wouldn't open immediately after the iCloud recovery in the previous version of Pages and it still won't open in the most up to date version. I have tried accessing iWork via my PC (sorry all, planning a Mac!) but still cannot get into the app.
In the previous version of Pages I couldn't even select the document for deletion or sharing. Is there any way I can try to recover the document again from iCloud? I guess that if I do delete the corrupted file from Pages, I cannot then try to recover it from iCloud?
    Thanks again Alfred.

  • Cannot open Pages document on iMac created on iPad

I createdc a document using Pages 09 on my iPad 3 in December 2012 and saved it to iCloud. Since then I've got an Imac and installed Pages 09 on that computer. Now, when I try to open that document, created on my iPad, on the iMac it won't open, nor will it open on the iPad anymore. I get an error message saying '...couldn't open this document...'. Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong and how to rectify this please? I've got the latest iOS on the iPad and running fully updated Mountain Lion on the iMac. Thanks very much for any help.

The document is probably corrupt. I wouldn't trust that the uploading to iCloud always is complete. I would always have a copy on the iPad or the Mac. You never know when connection is slow or going down and if you are uploading at that time you are bound to get problems.

  • Cannot open Pages document in Mavericks

Someone has sent mew a Pages document. When I try and open it I get an error message saying:
You need newer versions of OS X and Pages to open this document.
Install the latest version of OS X, then download the latest version of Pages from the Mac App Store.
Is there a converter anywhere I can use? I'm not going to upgrade my entire OS just to open one document. To be frank I can't believe Apple are even suggesting it. Unfortunately asking the sender to re-save it as another format isn't an acceptable option.
    I'm on 10.9.5, and Pages 5.2.2.

I suspect that the priority is on cross-platform compatibility and use of iCloud Drive. I understand this is a critical part of the OS/X-iOS business strategy and I don't begrudge the effort, but I think this has undermined the focus on important features.
No ability to do endnotes? That should be easier to implement than footnotes. Advanced search for invisible characters (line breaks in particular) was a feature of great value and shouldn't be hard to implement within the current find&replace system. A lot of effort is going into Pages 5 as a common tool for three environments, but little seems to be going into rebuilding its feature set. And retaining the presentation of facing pages imported from 4.3 but not being able to change the settings is just frustrating.

  • Cannot open pages documents "index.xml file is missing"

Working on an iMac Mountain lion and using pages 3.0.3.  Just today, none of my pages documents will open.  I haven't stored anything in the cloud, I haven't changes anything, just working on the pages documents  simple text.
The last thing I did with it was to print the file, as I have so often before.  I have a MacBook with the same pages app, but running on Yosemite -- bought a new version of pages.
The MacBook will open .pages files stored on that hard drive, but files taken from the iMac will not open on the MacBook.
I'm in a tight.  I have a vast number of documents as I've been using pages for years.

By default, Pages v5.5.2 on Yosemite saves out a Single File format document, which is a compressed renamed zip folder that the Finder allows us to believe is a document. When you attempt to open that document from within Pages '08, or Pages '09, you get the following dialog:
The Pages v5 generation documents do not use an internal index.xml file. Pages v5.5.2 also allows one to change that single file format document into a package file format document, which is not a compressed, renamed folder. When you open one of these package format documents in the older Pages applications, you now get a different dialog message. The index.xml file is still missing, but…
If you are using Pages '08 v3.0.3, or Pages '09 v4.3, there are no newer versions of these applications available. This is an Apple attempt to steer users to a Yosemite update, and then downgrade to the latest Pages applications that now require Yosemite. They could have just said, “we made a document format that is incompatible with older Pages applications.”

  • I cannot open Pages documents on my Intel 2.56 iMac (Tiger) that were created on a newer iMac.  It says "Document" couldn't be opened.

    "         "

    Hi Patti,
    "This is not possible....?"
No. True in many cases—older versions can't open the files of newer versions, usually because of new features or a change in file format (to accommodate new features).
But the iWork '09 applications (up to v n.0.x ) will run in Tiger. If iWork on the newer machine was installed from a disk, and the disk was purchased with a Family licence, you can install it on up to five computers owned by members of the same family, and living under the same roof. If it was a single user licence, or if it was purchased and installed via the Mac app store, you'll need a new retail box version.

  • Receiver can't open Pages Document - Help!

    Hello,
I have made track changes to a Pages document and need to send it to a colleague.  I tried to send it as an attachment to email (yahoo and gmail accounts) and it failed.  I then uploaded it to a Dropbox account but my colleage was not able to open it.  Can anyone help?  I don't want to send it as a pdf as there are over 500 tracked changes and the work will have to be redone.
    Thanks. Jane

Pages v5.2.2 creates directories, not regular files. The only place where this directory actually appears as a regular file (to the user) is courtesy of the Finder on OS X. These Pages v5.2.2 directories are incompatible with Gmail, and Dropbox. You must first right-click on the Pages document, and then from the contextual menu, choose compress the document name. You now have filename.pages.zip, which to Gmail and Dropbox appear as an allowable document. The destination user would simply double-click this document to make it filename.pages.
There are some caveats. The recipient must be running OS X Mavericks or later, because this is a requirement for the Pages v5.2.2 application, which is the only application on the planet that can open Pages v5.2.2 documents. Otherwise, the recipient cannot open your document, unless they have Pages v2 or later on IOS 7 or 8.
I would have also mentioned Pages for iCloud beta, but since I do not have IOS 8, or Yosemite, I am blocked from accessing Pages for iCloud beta until I upgrade to iCloud Drive. Doing so, according to others, vanishes previous Pages documents stored in the older iCloud installation. Apple is at it again.

You're running an older version of Pages, perhaps in a folder called "iWork '09" in the Applications folder, or else on your Desktop. Quit it and launch the one at the top level of Applications.
