HELP: Cannot restore DMG image stored on NTFS disk!

Hello. My MacBook Pro has OSX Lion on it.
I have created a DMG image of my starting volume using Disk Utility. The image was saved on an NTFS formatted external USB disk. I used Paragon NTFS for Mac to activate writing on NTFS partitions. The image was created, tested and it mounted fine. It's size is 105GB.
I have restarted the system and am accessing Disk Utility from the recovery partition that OSX Lion creates. Disk Utility can see the NTFS disk and I can choose the DMG image as source and the partition on the internal hard disk as a target without problems but when I press the restore button and the Image scan process is going to start I just get an error that says "Unabke to scan Mac-OSX HD. Resource busy". When I try the SCAN BEFORE RESTORE command on Disk Utility on the image I am getting "Unable to scan MAC IMAGE.DMG (Not such file or directory)".
I have already erased my startup disk and really need to get this image back in place. It is the only backup I have of my data.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the fast answer. Excuse my question but are you certain of this? This would be a big job because I would have to:
1. Find another external hard disk. Most probably it will be NTFS formatted because this and FAT32 are the most common formats out there.
2. Find another apple computer to transfer the image to the other hard disk
3. Format my external hard disk as a HFS disk
4. Transfer the DMG image back to the HFS hard disk.
5. After this reformat my external hard disk as NTFS because I live in an hybrid world where PCs and Macs coexist and NTFS is a good bet for compatibility.
If you indeed are certain that that is the correct answer to this situation then I will move into it immediately.
Thanks.

  • Restoring .dmg image from external to Mac HD in Disk Utility: "Unable to scan image (Input/output error)"

    Hi guys,
So I've got a problem with restoring the image backup I did (using Disk Utility) of my 500GB HD on my MBP which was acting weird or maybe even crashed a few months ago. After creating the backup image and putting it on my external device, I installed Mavericks back to see if everything was alright (mainly the HD) and everything seems okay.
I did try restoring the backup image through disk utility before installing mavericks (thus erasing everything again on the HD) AND after. But nothing..
The whole process starts fine and then it starts scanning the image when after maybe a good 10-15min in I get a message that says that it was unable to scan the image. I tried verifying the disk(s), everything came out "OK". Also tried scanning it through Images > Scan image for Restore... with the same results.
While searching I've seen people getting messages like "Unable to scan filename.dmg (Invalid argument)" and "Unable to scan filename.dmg
(Internal error)" but none have (Input/output error)
    The screen grab is below.
I also came across something about using terminal/commands but I'm not that savvy with it, especially considering that those there had issues with either mounting or trouble finding the image.
I've also tried moving the backup image to a different external device 2TB and also the desktop because I read it may have to do with the format of the externals or maybe free space. But THEN I would get a message saying
"The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Mac HD Backup.dmg" can't be read or written. Error code -36"
Fyi ALL my externals are HFS+/Journaled and the backup image format was compressed.
I REALLY don't know what to do next. Was it the wrong move to create a dmg image? Have I lost everything? Is there still a way out?
    If anyone can help, THANKS!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • Help "Cannot Restore Backup" - Lost all my sons baby photos from birth

    Hi All,
When trying to restore my iPhone I receive this message "Cannot Restore Backup" when selecting any of the three previous restore points. I had a live chat conversation with apple; they confirmed all three of my backup's are ok their end and recommended that I try the two finger reboot and reset my wifi. None of this worked so they suggested that I tried again in the Apple store using their wifi.... Again didn't work. Made a appointment with the genius bar and they tried a DFU mode reboot with no joy. Next they tried a restore using a new hand set but this also didn't work. Apple has now set a call back for 4:15 tomorrow 3/11/14.
I am now pretty concerned as iCloud has all my photos of my baby sons photo since he was born, which are priceless photos. I don't care about my app etc but I really hope that Apple have a way to supply me with my photos should all else fail. After all I'm paying monthly for a 200GB storage plan which at the moment doesn't appear to be fit for purpose.
Has anyone had any joy in resolving this issue? The member of the genius bar tried to make out that my device or wifi was the problem when backing up. I pointed out that at no point has my phone informed me that the backup failed and that the apple advisor via the live chat said my backups were fine. I said from my point of view I'm paying for a service to ensure all of my photos and videos were safely stored without fear of a home hard drive failing.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice,
    Carl

  • Using Disk Utility to restore an image stored on the network

    Hello --
I have a disk image, Image.dmg. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, Disk utility is able to restore this image from a firewire drive to an internal drive.
Image.dmg is also on a network share, hosted via AFP. When I boot from the 10.4 installer DVD, select "Restore," and specify that share as the source:
    afp://172.28.40.XX/Image_Share/Image.dmg
    I get this message:
"You must authenticate in order to restore."
I imagine that the server would like for me to log on before giving me access to the share. However, Disk Utility doesn't provide me with an authentication dialog.
    Any ideas?

Can't really tell if you are trying to restore an image from a locally attached firewire drive or (as from the original poster of the message) from a remotely shared location. If you are restoring from a remote share location then have you tried:
    afp://username:[email protected]/Image_Share/Image.dmg
Replacing username and password with the account information which has access to that remote share location.
    Good luck,
    TK

  • Cannot eject DMG images in Finder

I seem to be having this problem whereby I cannot seem to eject any DMG images via Finder. I can only eject them using the Disk Utility.
When click the eject button in Finder, nothing happens.
    Anyone facing this problem?

Yep, this has been happening to me as well. Stubborn nagging mounted disk images (all of them) won't eject under any circumstances, unless I log out, reboot, or relaunch the finder. Actual mounted disks often seem to need to be ejected twice before they will go away...

    Hi,
It may be that you have inadvertantly wiped the Recovery Partition D when sanitising the drive, or it may have become corrupt.  Either way, you best option is to reinstall the OS using recovery discs as these will also re-create the Recovery Partition on the HDD.
You can order a replacement set of Recovery Discs using the link below.

If you have any problem with this link, order them directly from HP.

  • Cannot restore .dmg file

Before re-installing Snow Leopard I used Disk utility to make a disk image as backup of my HD, and burnt it on a DVD. Now, after the re-installation, I'm not able to mount and open the .dmg file. I'd like to restore important folders. Who can help?

Are you dragging the .dmg file to the desktop before you try to mount it?

  • HELP - Cannot Restore Shadow Copies - Access Denied - Security Restrictions?

Server 2008 environment. Attempting to restore from shadow copy. Attempts to do so while logged in as enterprise administrator returns error:
You do not have permission to access \\localhost\D$\@GMT-2014-01-31-18.01.17\Share\Retail\Volunteer Hours\2011. Contact your network administrator to request access.
Attempt to change owner to current enterprise administrator returns:
Unable to set new owner on 2011.
    The media is write protected.
Any ideas how to get these files back from shadow copies? Can't tell who the original owner was as security tabs display owner as "Unable to display current owner." Need these files back and can't figure out how to set permissions to do so!
Any ideas or help out there?

    Hi Russ Foszcz,
The files you attempted to restore from shadow copy are stored on a local disk or an external disk? If it is an external disk, please refer to the article below to troubleshoot "Media is Write Protected" error:
You may see "Media is Write Protected" Error or VDS error 80070013 after bringing SAN disk online via Diskpart in Windows Server 2008
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971436
If it is a local disk, please try the steps below:
    1 Open CMD
2 Input diskpart and press Enter
    3 Select volume=E (Volume E: for example)
4 Input attributes volume to check if the volume is specified read-only attribute
5 If the volume is read-only, input attributes volume clear read-only to clears the read-only attribute
For more detailed information, please refer to the article below:

Tried yesterday to upgrade my non-3G iphone to the latest software. Something went wrong and I received messages saying that I had to do a restore of my phone. I just went to do this (plugged phone into my PC running XP) and clicked on the restore button in itunes. After about 5 minutes, I received an error message saying "The iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)."
What in the world does this mean and what do I do now? I'm left with a phone displaying the white USB cord with arrow pointing to itunes icon on screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks......

    Hi,
have the same issue few days ago, just uninstalled 2.2 iTunes and fortunately I had version 2.1 installed it and everything was just fine - restored my iPhone and synced back everything ok.
Today updated the latest 2.2 fine and the iPhone is working ok.
the reason was I suppose you can't sync and update to 2.2 in the same time.
so it is important to sync your phone before you update to the latest 2.2 again.
forget about apple support - they are completely useless talking about "hardware" and 3rd party "software" issues - given the fact that I have not changed NOTHING on my PC and the iPhone it is pretty clear for me that 2.2 update and his dodgy USB driver are the most posssible reason.
So If you do not have the previous iTunes to restore the phone basically you are s....d
hope this will help you, it worked fine for me.
P.S. you SHOULD restart both the PC and iPhone after restore and before you sync. So disabling automatic sync is a good idea too.

  • Restore dmg image problem

Running disk utility after apple startup disk.  Created image of my HD and it is about 100GB.  I have a 320 GB drive.  Created a small 30GB partition after formatting and left 290GB.  Image won't restore to the 290GB partition...says "not enough space".
Plenty of extra space for the image...but the image was taken from the 320gb before I did the 30gb partition.  I can delete that partition and then it will work...telling me that my image requires every bit of the 320gb hard drive.
Any idea on how to make a 100gb backup image fit on a 290 GB partition not requiring the original 320 GB drive?

    Hi milehigh,
download a (I think) free CCC utility app. (Carbon Copy Cloner.app) and that will accommodate what you want to do.

  • Guys help cannot restore!!

guys i installed the newest software for the n95 8gb which is 31.0.015 and it is not restoring my back up i tried all pc suites i tried restore factory setting no use !!! wat to do now guys ? any ideas?

What happens when you try to restor? Does it get so far and then get stuck in an endless loop or does it refuse to start and give you an error message?
I'm guessing there is corrupt data in your backup somewhere. Instead of restoring the entire backup in one hit, try restoring individual components (contacts, messages, gallery files, calendar etc.)  individually - that way you get at least most of your data back and you should be able to identify where the problem is.

As I have limited disk space available on the server I copied the VM Template to an 500 GB NTFS USB drive and mounted it on /OVS/seed_pool

Problem is: 'dd iflag=direct' isn't supported by fs type ntfs-3g which is the one used for mounting the USB drive.
I modified OVSXUtility.py and compiled it into OVSXUtility.pyc ... still VM Manager keeps running the original. (I am not python versed)
    Is there any workaround?

Or if you don't want to repartition your USB drive, just use dd to create a large file big enough to hold your image and format that as ext3 and mount it, move your image into it and have fun.

    Hi acura1073,
We indeed need more information about your problem so that we can help.
    What’s about the “Image program”?
If you have any screenshots, this would be better to understand your situation.
