Help CAPTURE IN FCP

Hi when i try to capture hdv footage from my sony hdr-hc9
THE APPLICATION QUITS
It used to work but now....
My settings are 1080i60 Firewirebasic

Try searching the forum for that camera model, never heard of it myself.
You camera connects via Firewire, apparently, so try a new cable.
Restart the Mac.
You can also try throwing away the FCP plst file, that sometimes cures stuff like this.

  • Footage incurs drop in brightness after capturing into FCP... Help?

I have had this problem intermitently over the past few weeks and have only found very casual references from other users regarding it. However recently I tried to import HDV footage and the brightness dropped to about 80% of what it is when previewing in the log and capture window.
So to explain in more detail...
When I preview footage to capture into FCP within the Log and Capture window it is consistent with the brightness on the lcd and in the viewfinder of the camera. However after the footage is down capturing and I preview it in the canvas window the footage is about 80% of the brightness it was when capturing.
I have tried everything in these posts; I have reinstalled. Deleted the receipts for quicktime 7.1.3 and reinstalled, tired to capture the HDV footage as DV.
No help. This problem has now become consistent and I found no topics that directly address this. I have to import this footage and deliver it to my client asap and I am honestly at a loss.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    PowerBook g4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I want to apologize if I keep sounding like a broken record and sounding like someone who doesn’t really understand what they are talking about. I first want to layout that I completely understand, and have understood, the dangers and the incompatibility issues associated with video and a computer monitoring system. Therefore I can safely say that I am working at a fcp station that allows me to monitor my footage on a true video monitor where the color spaces and gamma match.
I have since my last post tried several things and want to reiterate the few things I have already tried because I feel this discussion thread makes it seem as if my issues are generic newbie issues with someone who does understand the editing systems. I assure you that I do.
That being said I have taken a few steps to find the problem. Since my last post I have tried to edit normal NTSC video and have had no trouble. My trouble is solely with hdv. I would also like to clarify, or rather restate that the image brightness qualities that are different are between the log and capture preview and the viewer and canvas windows, as well as when monitoring with my external video monitor which is a 1080i Panasonic multiformat monitor. So I want to stress that I see the image on my screen, even my computer screen, with an acceptable brightness. It is only after bringing them into fcp that the brightness drops.
Does the low-rez proxy image issue really mean that when editing hdv on my comp that I will only be able to see the true product after outputting to a quicktime movie and viewing on my monitor using quicktime? If so, that ***** and I am importing using standard dv.
Again though I want to thank you all for responding and trying to help me out here. It’s really been frustrating me and I appreciate the help in trying to get to the bottom of this.

  • Format Hard Drive for Capture w/ FCP and use on PC?

Can someone tell me how I can format a hard drive that will ultimately be used by a client with only PC's -- so that I can capture video on my Mac using FCP?
In the past, I thought FCP broke up captured video into 2 GB segments when a hard drive was formatted for MS-DOS. But tonight I formatted my client's external hd using Disk Utility and the drive wasn't even available under system settings on FCP.
I'm really not at all PC-savvy anymore...can someone tell me if there is way to do this?
If it matters, I'm capturing home video from several sources: Canopus ADVC-300, and mini-DV tapes using a Sony camcorder.
    Thanks!
    Jenny

Thank you so much. The NTFS-3G did the trick. I have one more dumb question (again...I'm completely PC-illiterate). Would .dv be the best format for me to capture video again for a client who is a home user of a PC? I was planning to capture with FCP (in .mov format) -- but perhaps for ease of use for the client, I should use Toast or iMovie and capture in .dv?
Again...thanks for your help. This is the first time I've encountered this situation!

  • Can't use HDV quicktime .mov files (captured in FCP on a mac at work) on PC

    Hiya everyone!
I've taken some work home from the macs at work, but can't open it on my PC.
Footage was captured in FCP on a mac at work, HDV quicktime .mov, but won't open in the newest quicktime, windows media player and more importantly in Adobe After Effects CS3 or Premiere Pro CS3 on my PC at home.
When I try opening the files in quicktime, the screen is white, but the audio plays. They don't open in windows media player at all. When I try to import them into Premiere, I get a message reading, "Error Message, Codec missing or unavailable". But they import into After Effects, except they only play as white...
I've tried converting them into almost everything, and they often play (as .avi for example in the newest QT, WMP, Adobe Premiere and AE), but they increase A LOT in size and decrease A LOT in quality.
The HDV files that won't open read as:
    Source: *.mov
    Format: HDV 1080i50, 1920 x 1080, Millions 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), 48.000 kHz
    Movie FPS: 25.00
    Playing FPS: (Available when playing)
    Data Size: 69.53 MB
    Data Rate: 28.10 mbits/sec
    Current time: 00:00:01.64
    Duration: 00:00:20.76
    Normal size: 1920 x 1080
    Current size: 1920 x 1080
Anything smaller than 1920 x 1080 plays fine.
I've been all through google, and the adobe and apple sites, and the best I could find is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7753066#7753066
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8159317&#8159317
My problem is almost identical to these 2...
No one in the whole world seems to have an answer...
Does anyone here know how I can use the HDV files from the work macs on my PC at home?
    -Kaiwin

HEy, I have been looking into this problem... i also wanted to play quicktime files using my pc... The last thing i tried was downloadiing these codecs
    1)apple pro res *for pc
    2)mpeg 2 codec for pc
I have HDV files captured on a Mac G5 they are 30p 720,
I think i am close to solving the problem because: before installing the codecs i couldn't see the video and only audio.. but now i open it and i can see the video partially... here are my screen captures....
anyone interested in getting this solved???,... i would also like some help in importing m2t files from VLC player to HDV split where they can be read and edited. Thank you.
Ultimately my goal is to be able to edit these HDV files directly and export them back out with good quality.. because my only editing choice right now is Windows movie maker.
this is an error i got from the HDV split program. Its supposed to read m2t files..

  • Help with Workflow FCP to Compressor then DVD Pro and Shaky footage

Hi, I am new to using a MAC and also to Final Cut Studio so if this question has been asked before or seems obvious then I offer my apologies.
I have a clip on the timeline which is a little shaky but I need to use it. I have added a SmoothCam filter and when I playback in FCP all seems OK however after sending to Compressor then eventually to DVD Pro the clip shows as being shaky again, almost as if the filter had been deleted in the Compressor. Could someone perhaps talk me through the correct workflow I should be using and maybe suggest where I am going wrong please. As I said this is my first attempt to author a DVD with FCP on my MAC.
The footage was captured on my Panasonic Home camcorder. The settings in my camera were set at 1920 x 1080 HG mode for High Definition.
In my camera user guide it refers to the images being based upon the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 codec so should I have set something similar when capturing into FCP.
    Any advice would be welcomed.
    Regards
    Fred

Hi Mike I tried everything to try and resolve this one, I tried all combinations of field dominance. I also followed the recommendations from the Apple help to use the intermediate codec (search under AVCHD in the Help files) If I get anywhere I will mail you
    Regards
    Fred
PS I had some advice from another forum group who said to try and export a Quicktime movie into DVD Pro and not to send to Compressor, I will try that later and see if that helps.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • Sped up clip after capture in FCP 6.0

Everything I capture in FCP 6.0 from my JVC GRD 850 is sped up. I'm using OS X.4.11 All of my settings seem to be OK. Any idea what's going on?

It's not because of incorrect settings then. Next thing to try:
    Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. If you have further problems, the backup can be recalled and you can continue working.

  • Capturing "Now" FCP automaticly making multiple clips

When capturing "Now" FCP is cutting a single clip into multiple clips during capture, on its own. Any suggestions?

    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi,
it does seem unlikely, but sometimes FCP breaks up continuous shots when working with HDV. Most of the time, this happens towards the end of a shot, so I end up with 3-4 seconds of the first shot.
Very rarely, that happens with MiniDV, too. The TC seems to be fine, but there may be minor problems, and FCP seems to be a bit picky when it comes to that, so you get a TC break when (at least on your deck) there seems to be a continuous TC. And HDV is even worse than DV. But that's just my own experience. Maybe its as simple as your playhead being clogged up?
    Cheers,
    Colin

  • Monitoring audio in sync with video when capturing in FCP studio

Is there a way I can monitor audio in sync with video when capturing in FCP Studio? I know you can plug headphones into your tape deck but that sound is not in sync with the video in the capture window due to time delay. I tried plugging the headphones into my Powerbook but could not get any audio coming through these, nor audio through the Mac's inbuilt speakers.

The preview checkbox is ticked and the audio monitor indicates that sound is being picked up (the levels rise and fall) but I still can't hear anything! The audio/video sync on the external monitor is ok, but because there is a time delay between that and the video capture window, I can't use that as a reliable monitor for sound sync. If I could resolve the video sync problem there, then I could monitor the sound through the external monitor.

  • Unable to capture in FCP 6, HELP!

Trying to capture dvx100 footage using FCP 6(studio2) with no luck.
When initiating log and capture, I can control my camera via FW, but preview is disabled as well as
    ability to capture footage.
I have tried deleting pref's, deleting QT prefs, triple checked settings (NTSC DV), tried variations of
turning camera off/on during opening of FCP as well as using alternate ports.
I'm at a loss. Can anyone help!!?!?!
    - Need to cut something asap.
    Thanks.

Thank you Patrick. You have helped me before, so thanks again.
I do not have anything else connected to the firewire ports. I have an external hard drive, but I have tried to capture with and without the hard drive attached. I did recently back up using Carbon Copy Cloner to another hard drive, if anyone thinks this may be the issue.
I can't recall the exact error message in FCP (I have deleted the program trying to fix the issue, and focus on the capture problem in Quicktime thinking that if Quicktime and iMovie both don't capture, that the problem is not with FCP, but either with the OS or the back end of QT) I can re-install FCP to give you the exact FCP error message if you would like me too. Ie, if the exact error message is necessary.
    Thanks again for your response.

  • Help ! Batch Capture won't capture . FCP 5 & Kona 3

When I select any offline clip and try to batch capture it - the machine seems to be working fine, cues up the deck at the start of the clip, rolls away - the capture screen appears but then everything just keeps rolling - ie it doesnt stop when it reaches the tc out point of the clip. I eventually have to abort and the offline clip remains offline.
Capture Now on the fly works fine.
This is a new G5 Quad running the latest OS with FCP5 capturing from a Digibeta PAL Sony deck with RS 422 control thru the AJA BOB to a Kona 3 Card. I havce full deck control as normal thru the Log & Capture window.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have the latest Kona drivers? What are you capturing to? What codec are you using?

    iMovie does not use timecode.
Canons are notorious for weak timecode and firewire support. Try capturing the tape using another DV player.

BTW - a very interesting Camera - might look for it - upgrade is of need to me.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

  • SONY HC1 CANNOT CAPTURE WITH FCP 6.0

    HELP PLEASE!!
This problem is driving me mental.
I have a Sony HDR HC1. I've been shooting in DV PAL 4:3 before and had no problems at all.
It's well past time when i should be shooting in HDV 16:9. I have changed the settings on the video camera to HDV, 16:9, including in playback mode.
No matter what settings i put in FCP i cannot get it to capture??? I just always get the message that says "Device is not connected or capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device."
Please can someone in the know come up with some suggestions? I'd be so grateful.
    TIA! Regards.

I think you have to change a setting in your camera (I have an HC7 which is just a later version of yours). It's still playing back in DV so final cut isn't recognizing it as HDV. set your camera in playback mode>hit p menu>menu> scroll through to VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your fire wire cable. On your screen you'll have 3 choices: Auto, HDV, DV. Push HDV. (auto doesn't seem to work) Get out of the menus. Camera will now play back in HDV mode. Hook up your firewire cable again. Make sure your Easy set up in FCP matches the camera (I'm not sure what pal setting are). Hopefully, you'll be good to go.
