Help! Card Power Supply wanted!

Dear all,
My Power Book G3 (bought in 1999) has collapsed. In October 2006 (note, 2 1/2 months ago) I switched it on and felt a bad smell ... a strange noise and after it it was "dead". I took it to the seller (in the meantime they changed a lot their organization) and now they are telling me what follows:
"The code of the spare part broken is
Card Power Supply - 661-2029
Unfortunately it's not possible to submit you an offer for repairing the machine since the part is no more in the Apple catalogue.
We don't guarantee anyway that even by substituting the part your machine can work again since Power Book G3 is out the Apple Support and therefore it's not possible to check it".
I've asked them to give me back my G3.
My idea is
- to find out if there is a way to find somewhere this Card Power Supply.
It's not necessary to tell you how much I am affectionate to my "baby".
Can someone help me?
Since the machine is still at the Apple Shop I can't tell you for the time being what family it belongs to, anyway as soon as I have it back I'll post other technical info about the model.
THANK YOU 2K!!!!!!!!
Apple kisses,
Silvia Nava

In the US, " No new parts are available any more" is exactly what Apple would tell you.
There are other vendors who repair MacBooks and PowerBooks. Used parts are plentiful, since some of these machines die and the remaining good parts are sold.
This vendor sells used and some new parts, and also has illustrated guides to how to repair.

Click on the "Begin Installation" button to see how these look.
I am sure there are vendors in Italy who offer repair services for older PowerBooks. Since the parts are not new, warranties may be only a month or two instead of a year.

  • Need help with power supply & graphics card upgrades

I have a HP Pavilion p6320y that I bought 8 months ago. AMD Phenom II x4820 Quad Core processor.   I play WoW and since the last big patch, have been suffering with low fps. I updated drivers and followed all the advice given to me by Blizz and finally figured out that my Nvidia GeForce 9100 (integrated graphics) isn't good enough anymore.
I checked my computer and discovered that I have a 300w power supply (12V) and read on another post here that something stronger than 300w is needed to run a decent graphics card.
    Now for my questions:
How much of a power supply can I upgrade to without hurting my computer, but will be enough to run a good card?
What would be a good graphics card for this computer?
I've been looking at the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express graphics card and wonder if that will work on my computer.  Most of the nicer cards seem to be the PCI Express and I'm not sure if that will work.
Any advice will be most helpful. I have some experience with the inner workings of my PC and would like to fix this myself instead of running to the closest computer shop and paying someone else to. Thanks!

Well, you are starting out from a fairly low baseline with the integrated graphics. It will not cost much to have a substantial increase if all you want to do is run WoW without error messages. Yes, the 300w power supply is an issue and rules out any card that will require its own power (i.e. needs its own power cord like a hard drive) but there are several mid-grade cards that can run off bus power alone (i.e. just from the pci-e slot itself). Just taking a quick look at newegg.com I see the following:
    GeForce 9400 under $50
    Radeon HD 4650 under $50
    GeForce 9500GT a little over $50
Any of these should get you where you want to be and not require a PS upgrade. The slot you have available is a PCI Express x16 slot so don't look at AGP cards; they will not work. If you want to install the card you mention you need to get a better PSU.

  • Need Help with power supply reccomendations for my graphics card

    hi
i have a MSI GeForce GTX 780 Graphics card... i built my own system, i also got a rosewill rx750 power supply in it which i think is causing me problems, the computer works great until i get into games like titan fall and try and get into a game then it restarts the computer on its own.. has done this with a few games, but it works fine when surfing the net and so forth, i have read its to do with the power supply being week and also read my chosen power supply isnt that good... anyone got any recommendations for me that i should look at or am i looking in the wrong direction with whats wrong with my pc... any help would be great thanks

yes the PSU is  the most important choice out there and corsair and seasonic are the best out there! (never buy cheap PSU's as like abvolt said a cheap one can easily kill your more expensive parts)
Cheap PSU = made of the most cheap parts they could get "think cheap shanghai parts are used that may be of any quality good or awful as its just what they could get for the lowest price" (ever bought anything that was super cheap they break very easily)
Quality PSU = the use of good quality well made parts and will have very good testing done on them to make sure they are stable and pass very tight regulations and conform to specs for 10-30 different factors each.
a cheap low quality PSU I class as a paper weight as it will never go near a computer (maybe i would use one as a basic bench PSU for things i do not care if they die or just for testing a fan or something that rubbish dirty power is not really a major problem but silicon is not tolerant to dirty power and will kill parts)

  • Help! power supply

i bought a compaq CQ5110Y and wanted to get a ati radeonHD 4650 1gb ddr2 pci E video card but this video card
needs 400W. I have a LC-B450 E power supply from my other pc and i was wondering if i could replace it with this one.

    Hi, Rennwerkes.

    and here:
    http://jimwarholic.com/2008/11/apple-imac-g5-power-supply-issues-and.php.
I think i saw new PSUs in the US offered for about $140. Here in Europe they are twice as expensive...
however, temperature problems might indicate a different source for the problems. Are the venting channels clean and the fans running? The G5 processor is quite hot - since short i have an Intel, and it's much less heating up! - especially if you have graphics or many windows open. (It depends also n which model you have)
There are also DVM's (Digital Voltmeters) with which one can measure a capacitor, but my attempt to do this with the capacitors on the PSU was not successful, probably due to the residual capacity of the surround print parts.
If you have access to a decent fast oscilloscope, you can check the PS voltages. If they are stable and without spikes, then the PSU is fine. If they are spikey, then a new capacitor can help.
    Hope this helps

  • Upgrading graphics card & power supply in a new P6674y

I just purchased a new Hp 6674y computer and wanted to upgrade the video card.  Reading here on the forums I got some good ideas for video cards for comparable computers to mine and also found out the power supply is going to need to be upgraded also.  My question is, can anyone tell me if there is a specific size, type or model of power supply that my particular model MUST use?  Or can I get a "standard" ATX 12v 600w or so, and replace it.  Also will an EVGA Nvidia GTX 460 graphics card fit into this case?  Thanks in advance for the help!

    Hi,
A standard size ATX will fit.  I am using the GTX 460 1 GB in one of my PCs (e9280t) which has nearly the same cabinet as your PC.  I bought a Corsair HX 650 but there are other choices.
How to replace a power supply.
How to replace a video card.
You should open up your PC and measure the physical dimensions of your power supply.  Here is a list of things to consider:
    Specifications
    Total wattage - important
12+ volt amperage rating - important
Modular - not mandatory but I like the flexibility
    Warranty
    i7 and SLI ready
    Efficiency rating
    Cost
Physical size -- standard ATX PSU is 5.5" by 5.9" by 3.4" give or take a few tenths
www.newegg.com has lots of PSUs choices.  Corsair, OCZ, Rosewill, Thermaltake.....

  • HP 6654 upgrade video card/power supply

I am interested in upgrading my video card from a current ATI Radeon HD 4200 to a "EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ 2GB GDDR5 128bit, PCI-E 3.0 Dual-Link DVI-I, 3 x DP, HDMI, SLI, HDCP, G-SYNC Ready Graphics Cards 02G-P4-2966-KR".  Will this graphics card fit for my cpu and work correctly with the motherboard?
I will be adding 4additional giggabites to increase the total instaled memory (RAM) to 8GB as well.
And in addition, i will purchase a 400 watt power supply.
Will this work for my current Pavilion 6654?

Thank you for the quick reply. My computer is...   HP Pavilion p6654y Desktop PC.
You are very welcome!  Thank you for the additional information.
As I suspected, your computer has a standard BIOS.  This means that you will have to buy an older video card.  I like EVGA products.  I suggest finding a card that you like and contacting the manufacturer's Tech Support (EVGA Tech Support 1-888-880-3842) to make certain that it will work in your computer.  This is the best way that I have found to not have to make a return.  The last card that EVGA made that used a standard BIOS was their GT 640.  Some of theirs do have an update for the VBIOS that allows them to run with a standard BIOS.
Now, for the power supply unit (PSU).  I like Corsair products.  I normally recommend at least 500W.  This allows for future upgrades.  A modular PSU is good for smaller cases.  You only have to use the cables that are necessary, allowing for better airflow.  You should measure the existing PSU and compare the measurements to the one that you choose.  All of the connectors should be compatible.

  • HP H8-1020 - Upgrading graphics card/power supply

    Hey,
Looking to give my almost 5 year old PC a much needed graphics card boost. As mentioned in the title, I have a HP h8-1020. After reading other posts from users on this forum, It seems that the power supply provided with this model (300W) is completely insufficient for any new, decent graphics card.
    I also use a 27 inch Samsung S27D360 Monitor.
I read that some people used the corsair CX500/600 with a Nvidia GT X series (2Gb) card as a suitable upgrade. However I don't know much about power supplies or performance graphics cards.  I'm not looking for an absolute top of the line card, just one that can run most modern high-intensity graphics games. I'm hoping for a price range of about $100 for the power supply, and no more than $200 for the graphics card.
Here are some of the games that I would like to run on high - max settings (preferably in 1920x1080):
    Diablo 3
    Skyrim
    Grand Theft Auto V
    The Elder Scrolls: Online
Any help with suggestions for a new power supply/graphics card would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
The Corsair CX600 would be a good choice for a power supply as would the Corsair CS650m.
You have an older PC which usually requires an older generation graphics cards.  The NVIDIA GTX 660 would be a good choice.
ZOTAC makes a number of graphics cards that are compatible back to PCI-E version 1.1.  Model  ZT-90101-10P is compatible back to PCI-E version 1.1 and is available at Best Buy.
Know what the return policy is before you buy.

  • Help : Simple Power Supply Filter

First , thanks to everyone who answered my question on "time step too small".
I am in the filter stage of a very simple power supply. However, when I connect a capacitor to the output of my rectified signal, the output signal of the load is not what I expect to see.
I expect it to be fairly constant, and located at the peak of the input voltage.
Any help will be deeply appreciated.
I have attached the circuit to it.
    Thank you.

O.K. Here's a picture of your circuit with the PI Filter attached to it. I just arbitrarily selected the components to use. I used low value caps so you can still see a slight ripple on it. A larger capacitor at the end of the bridge will filter this ripple almost completely out. Most circuits I have seen usually have this cap set somewhere in the 100uF-300uF range and the output capcitor in the range of 10uf-50uf range.
I can't remember the formylas for designing a PI Filter, but I am sure if you search the internet there are resources that can help you with that. I think I may refreshen my memeory on this subject as well.
Here's the picture and I hope this works for you.

  • M57 video card/power supply options

***Note: I have read virtually every post regarding video cards for this PC, and with this newer BIOS, I thought it best to see if things have changed after newest BIOS update***
About 2 weeks ago, I bought a SFF M57-6072 at a large internet store. I bought the PC for my wife, who may watch a movie, or play a couple of FPS games (Far Cry is probably the most video intensive game).
I was delighted at the price, and the fact it had a PCI-E slot. I knew I was pushing the limit of the 280W power supply, but I tried to install a Radeon HD 6450 (which does not require additional power). I could not get the card to work, so I was back to looking at options.
I upped the memory to 4gig, and flashed the BIOS to the latest (2RKT64BUS dated 1-8-14). and for giggles, tried the HD 6450 again, with no joy. I was a little miffed that the only note for the latest BIOS is "improve boot time". That seems rather cheesy to me, and it's almost impossible to find out what the prior BIOS updates may have fixed.
Another problem is, I'm having a lot of difficulty finding out if the stock 280W PS is a standard, or a proprietary PS, and only replaceable by certain types. If I can, I'll switch the motherboard out to a larger case, and use a 500W or better PS, and hopefully would gain the chance at using my HD 6450. Again, I'm running into a brick wall trying to figure out if it may or may not work. While I realize this was a workstation PC, I still have problems understanding why so few video cards would be compatible.. so here I am.
If you have tried and failed with a video on this PC, please note it here (not only for myself, but future readers of this forum). If you know that my moving the motherboard to a larger case is doable, please let me know.. as I have 3 more video cards that I can test, but they are not low profile. If I get to that stage, I will post those cards and the results. Just FYI, the cards I have yet to try are:
        BFG 9800 GTX+
        Radeon X700
        Geforce GT 460
    Thanks

    Go to Solution.

    Update 26 May 14:
I installed the Galaxy GT 610 with no issues. I tested the computer for about 2 hours with heavy usage to see if the PS could hold the load. Since the GT 610 only has a small fan, and no external power is needed, I had no issues with BSOD or otherwise.
I ran FutureMarks3DMark Vantage and 3DMark11 and received scores of P1907 and P588. Mostly stuttering on the tests (they are HEAVY benchmark tests), I was really trying to see if the system would hold in and not fold (BSOD). No failures.
I installed Far Cry, and tested it starting with minimum specs, then wound up using HIGH settings for everything across the board, and it runs smooth. No rippling/tearing, stutters or video anomolies. I was so surprised, I thought.. hmm.. CRYSIS!?!  Unfortunately, I couldn't read the disk and will have to replace my DVDrom before going that far. I will post my results for Crysis after getting my DVD situation fixed.
    My updated settings are:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6550
    HD: Sandisk 128G SSD
    Memory: 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2
    Video: Galaxy GT 610

  • IMac G5, nuke and pave, new power supply, want to start fresh!

Hi there. My iMac G5 is old and was put away for years after the power supply broke. Well, my 6 year old decided to fix it. Sent the power supply off for repair. $59 later, we're back on... but we are ONLY back on. Nothing is booting up. Just spinning and flashing a ???. I'm on Lion with all my other computers. How can I just nuke the old G5's OS and start fresh? I have old Snow Leopard Disks. Can I start from that? Any thoughts?

The latest OS you can use on a G5 is 10.5.8, Snow Leopard is only for intel machines.  Use a retail copy of Leopard and you should be all set, or use the install discs that came with the machine.  You can call Apple, give them your serial number and they will send you new install discs.

the PSU installed has an aux-power adapter, but it is a 4-pin used for intel server boards.
i need to convert some of the extra cables from the PSU in my chassis to work with the 10-pin connector on the motherboard (next to the 24-pin connector).
if someone could help me out and maybe provide me with adapter information, voltage information, any information.....that would be a great help.  a diagram of sorts would be greatly appreciated.  or maybe even a picture of the actual 10-pin cable going from the PSU to the motherboard??

    Hi
Yeah take the MB out of case and plug in only: CPU, PSU, 1 Memory stick (to secend slot from CPU) and monitor to MB back.
If it dont boot up after that and show error for not finding KB, then what code it has on debug led?
    Hope this helps  Cheers Mummy
Disconnected everything from motherboard except CPU + cooler & second RAM DIMM, set it on a cardboard box, plugged in 20+4 main power connector and the 8 and 4+4 CPU power connectors, then tried powering up again. Couldn't connect a display because I don't have an HDMI display handy - but I figure that doesn't matter much if power isn't even on long enough for BIOS to begin loading anyway. Nothing new happened. Unfortunately, a debug code never comes up.

  • Help spec power supply

I am building an AMD 64 machine with the following specs:
    MSI K8N NEO FSR
    AMD 64 3000
    1 Gig O' Ram
    SATA HDD
    1  floppy
    Dunno about video yet
a couple of case fans + the CPU fan
    DVD R/W
    Heres the problem:
I read somewhere on here that I should have at least 24A on the 12v line for the CPU from the PSU.  I got the datasheet for the CPU and found that it should use 89W peak @ 1.5v.  That comes too 59.333A @ 1.5v.  Assuming 75% efficiency for the conversion I get 6.18A for the 12v line (59.333A/12=4.944, 4.944*1.25=6.180A).  What am I missing here?  Did I screw up the math?  Will all of te other bits actually pull 17.8A?
What should my PSU specs be?
    Thanks in advance

so much choice and info around people will recomend thier own personal fav`s but a single rail (12v) with as much in the amp department as you can go for is where it all seems to point. 450+ watts
    pc power and cooling
    enermax
    tagen
etc all got good reviews . but the $£¬ is also an option of course.
i just got my pc p and c 510 deluxe from a tt 560 and my 12v ams gone up by 10 a
for slightly less but more reliable wattage
ok some may say overkill but better to be able to drive at 100 and only use 70
than limit yourself to 70 and drive at 70 all the time i guess.

  • ATI Card power problem

Hi all, I just bought my Mac Pro, got the stock 2.66 then added more RAM and an ATI card at the Apple Store and an extra hard drive. Now I was told by the Apple guys that they would install the ATI card in the top slot and pu the 7300 card in the bottom slot.
So I get home and plug in my machine and I get an error message that my video cards power supply is not properly plugged in and I need to replug it in.
I checked my system info and it turns out the top slot is still the nvidia card and when I plug my monitors into the bottom one (the ATI card) it only supports one of them.
So when I get back into the country (I am in mexico on business) I plan to call Apple but I was hoping someone on here could tell me if this is something I can easily do myself? I really want to use the ATI card I payed for as my primary video card.
    Thanks in advance!!!

    2.66 Mac Pro; Powerbook G4 17in   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well, got home and checked and sure enough the cord is not only not plugged in but it isn't even there! Called Apple and after getting them to understand my MONITORS where plugged in (They seemed to think that was the problem) they connected me to a Mac Pro "expert". He didn't have any ideas and said I probably needed to just take it back to the apple store I bought it from and ge them to plug it in.
So tomorrow its off the genuis bar to try and convince them to just plug the ATI card into the power source!
I am wondering now if anyone has experienced this or if anyone has the ATI card in their Mac Pro do you have it plugged in or not? THe apple care people told me it shouldn't need to be plugged in so I am curious now if its my machine or the ATI card...
