Help changing pereferences for opening pdf files

SO I was in a hurry one day. A window pooped up asking how I wanted to open a .pdf I clicked down to Pages (because I erroneously thought it would save me time moving the info to a thesis paper.) I must have also clicked do this every time, because well, it tries (and fails) everytime.
I have already done the trick where you click on any pdf file
go to the Open with: menu and change it to preview (or adobe, whatever)
then click change all
but the computer still tries (and fails) to open it with Pages first.
I can click on the pdf in my download folder and it opens correctly now, though
so how do I get it to stop using pages when it first downloads?
thanks in advance

In the Finder, locate and click on a pdf file.
Press command-I to Get Info.
In the Info window, go to the Open with... section, choose the application you want to use for PDF files.
Click Change All. OK the warning (if any).
Close the Info window.
If that doesn't fix the problem, the issue is probably a plist file used by the downloading application. Try posting the problem in the forum for that application.
Regards,
Barry

  • Parameters for opening PDF files in a browser

I read some of the posts about making a text link from an html page to a specific location in a pdf document in the browser.  I set up the parameters, as I understand it, according to the document "Parameters for Opening PDF Files." The result from my test took me to the top of page 1, not to the bookmark on page 3 that I specified. See the link below. What is wrong with the parameters?
    http://www.tabardtheatre.org/YPASCfolder/2012/SummerYouthProgram2012.pdff#page=3&bookmark= anniejr
You can also go to the website: http://www.tabardtheatre.org/audition.html and click on the text link (in blue).

The PDF Open Parameters do not contain the option to link directly to a bookmark, as was mentioned, but I've developed a script that can add this functionality to your files. Have a look here, if you're interested: http://try67.blogspot.com/2011/06/acrobat-link-to-specific-bookmark-in.html

  • Please Help!  Can't open pdf files online.

Several days ago I attempted to update my Adobe Reader.  I'm using a MacBook with OS 10.9.3.  I have a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.  After installing I received an error which says "internal error occurred"  After reading LOTS of websites, I finally used my Time Machine and reloaded the old adobe version.  It works to open pdf files on my computer, however, when I go to websites, it says that I have to accept the adobe legal agreement before the pdf is opened.  So many webpages are locked because I can't figure out where to accept these permissions.  Firefox will open these same web pages, but the screen is filled with distorted writing, all which basically curses adobe.  I believe your software has a virus and I wonder if you've found a fix.  Please help!

    Hello Pat,
Thank you for your reply, however, when I launch the older Adobe Reader application, it simply opens and does not ask for me to accept the agreement.  When I launch the newer Adobe Reader, I receive an internal error message and then the reader crashes.  I have attempted to re-load the new reader many times, I've deleted all of my old Adobe files including the files located under LIbrary/....  For many days I wasn't even able to open PDF files which are saved on my hard drive.  Using Apple's Time Machine, I was able to restore an older version of Adobe Reader which I can use to open files on my hard drive.  However, with the old reader and with the new reader, I still cannot open files on the internet - many web pages have items that I wish to open (spec sheets for example).  I have to send the links via email to myself and open them on another computer (extremely inefficient and time consuming).
I decided to try using Firefox and what I noticed is that when I try to weblinks that are PDF files, they open with distorted lines of text.  When you read the lines of text, there are broken sentences that say odd things (some profanity) that are directed at Adobe.  I won't repeat the lines here.  If someone from Adobe would please contact me directly (you should have my email information), I would greatly appreciate it.  It's obvious that there is a virus in your software.
I need help ASAP because my computer is my business computer and I'm really at a halt.  I need to have access to spec sheets which I can no longer open - or even download.  Buying a new computer to fix my Adobe Reader is not an option.
    Please help.

  • Default for opening pdf files keeps changing back to 'save file' after I set it to open in firefox

Since upgrading to the latest Firefox version, my options for opening adobe pdf files have changed. I set it to 'use Adobe Acrobat in Firefox', it works absolutely fine, then some time over the next few days it changes itself back to 'save file'. Then I have to open options and change it again. This happened to me some years back with a much earlier version of Firefox - I can't remember how it was resolved, I think it just stopped doing it after a while. But it is most irritating!

I echo the request for Help! I've added Options to my Toolbar so I can more easily change "Save File" to "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)" as the default. Why does Firefox keep reverting to the save file default?

  • Parameters for Opening PDF Files in Version XI

I have an application that opens a PDF document using Reader Version 7 - 10 at a particular page.
In Version XI this feature has been removed or changed and I can't find any documentation on Opening parameters for latest version.

Due to your answer I have done some further testing and it appears Version XI does not accept spaces in the file name.
If I remove the spaces in the file name it works fine.
I have tried enclosing the file name in single and double quotes but no luck.
I am using Delphi 7 and calling the routine Shellexecute with application parameter
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe
    and run parameters
    /A"Page=33"C:\MP5\Manuals\1145009 Operating Instructions.PDF
The above works fine with version 7-10.
With version XI it fails to find the file.

  • Any idea why Preview won't work for opening PDF files with this OS?

For some reason, after the last update to Mavericks 10.9.3, any time I attempt to open a PDF using Preview, the file will not open.  No response from the system.  Any recommended solutions?  Thanks in advance!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Help! Can't open pdf files!

I get a message saying the "file name" is not supported or has been damaged. Everything worked yesterday!
I have Adobe reader XI and my OS is Windows 7. This is also happening on my boss's computer. She also has Adobe Reader XI. Her OS is Windows Vista.
Many of our files are stored on Google Drive. When we go online to our documents, we can open them, but can't download them. It is our already downloaded files that we can't open.
We both recently ran Malware Bytes on our computers to get rid of any potential security threats..could that have caused the problem?
We need our files!! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Can you open one of these problem files with Notepad, then copy & paste the 1st 20 characters or so back here in the forum?

  • I've tried all the advice on the Firefox Help site, but I still can't download anything. Yesterday, I was able to download and open PDF files fine. Today... no.

While I was working on my Mac last night, I got a message that I needed to download an Adobe (I think an Acrobat X Pro) update. I did. That seems to be the time when I started having problems. Now I can't use the uninstaller for the program. I think that may be the problem, but my ability to fix it stops here.
I'm usually more discerning about updates, etc, but I was working on a project and the flashing updater was bothering me, so I hit yes, not really looking at the app I was updating. Ugh. My mistake.

    Hi hobanny,
Have you looked at the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] Knowledge Base article? There is a lot of useful information in there. It actually lists two different plugins to try for opening PDF files. I'd try both of them just to be safe.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Please help to open PDF file in new window

    Hi!
I have a My.pdf file, and file Other.pdf located in subfolder Myfolder.
For example, my.pdf located on c:\Mydocs\My.pdf and Other.pdf located in c:\mydoc\Myfolder\Other.pdf
I try make plugin that open Other.pdf in subfolder Myfolder, no matter in where My.pdf is located on computer.
I found in SDK API, that I need create a new window for open pdf file, using WinAPI function - CreateWindow:
    HWND externHWnd = CreateWindow ("ExternalWindow", "PDFViewer",WS_OVERLAPPEDWINDOW,50, 50, 500, 500, 0, 0, gHINSTANCE, NULL);
I copy example into Visual Studio, but in example there no gHINSTANCE is undeclared.
or plese provide working code for my task
    Please help

In which part of the SDK did you look.
Do you really mean a plugin (control Acobat from inside - can only be written using C#)
oder do you mean control/work with Acrobat from an external application (like vb,..) via activeX (=IAC).

  • Unable To Open PDF File In Browser

I am unable to open a PDF file within my browser using Adobe Reader.  Whenever I attempt to open a PDF file, I get the following message:
The Adobe Acrobat/Reader selected for viewing PDF documents in browsers cannot be found at its installed location, it may have been moved or deleted.
Please reinstall or repair the application (15:524)
I have ensured that Adobe Reader is set as my default program for opening PDF files, and have downloaded and installed the latest version of Adobe Reader.  I am running Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10.
I have attempted to contact Adobe Reader Support and was informed that the expected wait time was 3-5 minutes.  I have been holding for over an hour without any support.

How about if you right click on the PDF and select Save Link As..., and then open it locally from within Reader? Does it work ok then?  That might be a workaround until the issue within the browser is resolved.

  • Opening PDF files in Reader itself takes a long time

When I try opening PDF Files in Reader itself, this process takes a long time (more then 2 minutes for opening PDF files).
When I try opening PDF Files directly from My computer, My documents: no problem (direct opening).
Running Reader XI on Windows XP SP3.

    Hi,
According to your description, you want to open pdf file in the Adobe Reader directly from document library.
I suggest you do as the followings:
    1. In SharePoint Central Administration site, click Application Management->Manage Web Applications, select the web application for the site. Click Authentication
Providers, select default zone, and select Yes for "Enable Client Integration?".
    2. click Site Settings-> Site collection features->"Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" click Activate
    3. set the default open behavior for a document library by using the document library settings page.
    4. Enable the “Adobe Arcobat SharePoint OpenDocuments Component”add-on in the IE11.
    5. Add your current site URL to the trusted web sites in IE11.
