Help clean my desktop

Hi,
My new iMac is only 10 days old, but my desktop is getting cluttered. Having used windows, I know how to clean it, but everytime I try to do it, my application stops working. e.g. I subscribe to 'Dr. Laura', and in order to have it automatically download daily, I have to install its 'media center'. When I did that, it left a little icon with its name on the desktop. When I removed it, the downloads stopped. I was in the game, when I restored it. Question - how can i get it off the desktop?
I am sure there is a way, otherwise I can see the desktop getting cluttered very fast.
I also have a 'poor windows guy' question. When shutting down, do I have to get to apple menu, and click shut down (like in Windows), or is it OK to just turn off the switch?
Thanks,

You must use the Shutdown option in the Apple menu. Never shut down by simply turning off the power. The Shutdown option is needed so the operating system can perform certain chores prior to turning off the computer. If you simply turn off the power you may cause the hard drive to malfunction, losing all your data, and having to reformat the drive and reinstall everything from scratch.
As for what's on your Desktop you can fix that in a number of ways. One is to configure your application to save its downloads/files in a specific folder. I'm not familiar with the program you're using but you can check its preferences to see if that's possible. If not, then create a new folder inside your /Home/Documents/ folder. Move the files this program creates on your Desktop into that new folder. This removes them from the Desktop.
Many programs can be configured to save their files in a default folder. Safari's preferences can be configured to save all downloaded files in your /Home/Downloads/ folder.
There's an excellent shareware utility, Default Folder X - VersionTracker or MacUpdate, that can be used to setup default folders for applications that do not provide the option.

  • Help cleaning up a script to search in Finder with Spotlight?

I don't know much AppleScript at all, but managed to cobble together a script (invoked with Alfred) that opens a Finder window, sets the size, view options etc. and searches for Photoshop documents with the term passed from Alfred.

It starts with a process for cleanly starting over, and there is some discussion, and there is also a post (15) with links to older Desktop Software versions, if those are needed. Note that this is not, by any means, guaranteed to work...but it has worked for many to resolve issues they are having.
Also, for XP users, please be sure you are on SP3...that is the current minimum level required with the latest Desktop Software.

  • Clean up desktop icons?

make icons clean up without clicking view clean up with finder?

+This works for me in Mac OS 10.4.11:+
    *tell application "Finder"*
    activate
    *tell application "System Events"*
    *tell process "Finder"*
    try
*click menu item "Clean Up Selection" of menu "View" of menu bar 1*
*click menu item "Clean Up" of menu "View" of menu bar 1*
    *end try*
    *end tell*
    *end tell*
    *end tell*
Note that the menu item under the Finder's View menu can be "Clean Up Selection" or simply "Clean Up" depending on whether some, all, or none of the desktop icons are actually selected at any given time (at least this is the case in Mac OS 10.4.x). Hence the two *click menu item* commands are included inside a Try block in order to catch one or the other of these possibilities.
The script requires GUI scripting to be turned on. Under System Preferences > Universal Access, make sure that "Enable access for assistive devices" is checked.
The script can be saved as an application and run from the Dock, or run from the Script Menu whether saved as an application or saved as a compiled script.
    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  • Please Help: OS X Desktop Productivity

    Hi
I switched to Mac a couple of months back after being a PC user for many years, and I need some help regarding organizing my desktop and way of working with mutiple windows / applications.
I haven't taken the time to RTFM (read the f...... manual) yet but have just been feeling my way through Tiger. It's all great except for this:
I often work with as many 10-15 windows open at the same time. Whatever I'm working on, I like it to fill the screen completely so I can focus on that and that only. (Sometimes I will have mutiple applications open (on screen) at the same time and then sizing them to fit next to each other is fine, but mainly I like to have a cleanly organized screen and look at one thing at a time.)
And I also like to easily and quickly jump around between the various windows / applications that I have open.
In Microsoft Windows this was easy, I would maximise each window with a single click when I started it - and then it would fill the whole screen exactly. And evey application window that was running would have a corresponding tab at the bottom of the screen, so I could always directly jump from one application to another by clicking on the tab.
I can't seem to get this working well in Tiger. When I maximize a window (clicking on the "+") the window's open to randomly different sizes - depending on which application is being used. I then have to drag and re-size that window to fill the screen.
Then, if I've opened many windows on top of each other, and I want to jump from the one I'm working on to another one, I have to minimize, minimize, minimize, window after window to find the one I'm looking for.
This is driving me mad. My productivity has dropped significantly because I'm constantly dragging, resizing, minimizing and re-opening application windows and generally shifting stuff around
I hope I have simply overlooked an easy way to accomlish these 2 things, and would appreciate any assistance that anyone has.
    Thanks

    Hi, gobler.
In addition to Mike's advice re: Zoom and Exposé:
    • Command-Tab, aka the Application Switcher, will allow you to quickly jump between open apps.
    • Since you have a PowerBook, see also "Mac OS X: Portables - Using Function keys with Exposé, applications, games".
    • The Dock is also your friend. See "About the Dock (Mac OS X)" and the many items concerning the Dock you can find in Mac Help (Finder > Help > Mac Help, search for dock>, or online here.
    • Your productivity will increase immensely if you take a little time to educate yourself on Mac OS X. My "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ has a number of resources that you will find helpful including books, online trainging, and more.
    Good luck!

  • PLEASE HELP! Flashing desktop/finder - can't do anything!

    Hi,
My mac just went crazy and I have no idea what to do, Please help me!
I've just installed a program called Slideshow Magic (shareware downloaded from download.com) and after making 2 slideshows the finder just started flashing. Basically all the desktop icons and the top bar appear then dissapear about every 2 seconds, the little black arrow next to the Finder icon in the dock appears and dissapears at the same intervals, so I assume the Finder is opening then quiting, opening and quitting over and over.
All other programs can be opened from the dock.
I've tried restarting and shutting down but the same problem occurs everytime I start up.
Can anyone suggest what has gone wrong or more importantly how to fix it, it has all my art college work on and I've got a deadline next monday so I really need to get back on my feet. Any help will be MOST appreciated!
    Thanks for your time

    Power Mac G4 Desktop

    Hello,
Thank you both for your suggestions, however neither have worked.
Dale, I went through Dr Smokes guide and all was fine apart from the Cache Cleaning software. I couldn't install the software as the finder isn't open long enough to allow me to do so.
Niel, I tried booting with Command and S held down and ran the commands you suggested but to no avail.
A couple of things I tried doing myself...
I ran the Hardware Test by booting from the cd and holding the option key. I ran the extended test and everything passed, so I know its not a hardware issue.
I then booted from the cd again and updated the system software, upon restarting the desktop appeared fine, but after about a minute it reverted to it's flashing state. The two files that I created from the slideshow program (that originally caused this problem) are still on the desktop and I assume that they have caused it to go again.
Can you suggest a way that I can delete these files and consequently stop the machine crashing every time I update the software?
    Cheers
    George

    Solved!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Yikes...some have reported the need to go deeper into the Registry than is instructed in the Clean uninstall KB. Some have used a registry cleanser in order to successfully do what is needed.
Even though perhaps redundant, I suggest the following steps (insert plenty of reboots of your PC...not just restarts, but full power down reboots). Also, it is advised that you be logged into the PC on an account with full admin rights. Further, under Vista/Win7, use the "Run As Administrator" option for everything.
    1) Remove your device OS update package from your PC (add/remove programs)
    2) Cleanly uninstall the RIM DTM software:
KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software
Some have reported that there are more registry keys to remove than are discussed in that KB
Others have reported the use of a registry cleansing tool to also be helpful
    3) Get a fresh download of the RIM DTM software:
    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22
Choose the version that is newest and (if applicable) compatible with your PIM (if you are synchronizing via USB):
KB12268 Applications supported by BlackBerry Desktop Manager for synchronization
    4) Download (to your PC) a fresh copy of your device OS package from your carrier:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
    5) Install DTM to your PC
    6) Install (also to your PC), the device OS package
    7) Start the organizer configuration over:
KB17022 How to configure organizer applications for synchronization using BlackBerry Desktop Manager
Hopefully that will get things going again.
Good luck and let us know!

  • How to use AppleScript to clean up desktop?

I am writing a script that will take all the image documents on my desktop and place them into a newly created folder on the desktop called "desktop images". It'll take all the .dmgs and put them in another folder, etc. Then the remaining icons should arrange themselves by name. Disks should be ejected and caches dumped. Then the trash should be emptied. After all this, a dialog displays "Mission Accomplished. Would you like to Shut down, Restart, or Continue."
I have nearly everything I need put together except for the blasted desktop clean up. Here's how I have it right now:
    tell application "Finder"
clean up window of desktop by name
    end tell
    {Finder got an error: Can't get window of desktop.}
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
clean up window 1 by name
    end tell
--this one works on opened windows, but not on the desktop.
I have also tried other various methods to no avail. Help me please.

Thanks for the input Tony D and ByTheLightOfQuiveringAspens.
'm curious, why not do it in Automator?
I guess the biggest reason is because I'm learning AppleScript. I want to know how to do everything in AppleScript. Then, I also plan on making an AppleScript App using X Code stuff that implements all of my cool scripts I put together.
Some of the ones I have so far are a finder refresher, a show hidden files, an app unfreeze, bring all windows to left of monitor 1, and a really huge one that uses gui scripting to help people set up their ip printers at my college.
Now to the point at hand
2.) Do you know that Scipt Editor in reference to the Finder is recordable, and that you could set all of the icons...
I tried to use the record button but with no luck. Under OS 10.5, it just records every movement of the icons as "select window of desktop". And when I move the icons, it doesn't add to the script at all.
1.) How, specifically, do you want to "clean up" the desktop?
I tried selecting "Arrange By>Name" but it still doesn't record the action. The AS dictionary for the Finder says that it's possible; however, I can only get it to work in opened windows on the desktop using this script:
    tell application "Finder"
        activate
clean up window 1 by name
    end tell
If there is no wat to do it with a traditional AS, if a shell script existed that could do it, I'd be happy to know it.

  • Help Clean Up my iTunes

I use an external hard drive to store all of my iTunes data.  Recently, I was getting worried that it may crash, so I bought a new hard drive.  While making the switch, I decided it was time to clean everything up and start fresh. So....
What I've been doing is unchecking all of my duplicates.  Next, I plan on cleaning up the tracks/artists and everything to it says what it needs to and everything will look very nice on my iPod.  I have to do all of this manually, since I listen to non-mainstream music (mostly jambands that I've accumulated randomly).  When I'm done with that, I will delete my unchecked songs.
My question is this:  I was wondering if it would be good to back up my iTunes library, once everything is clean and exactly like I want.  Then, I want to delete everything from iTunes, delete the 'iTunes' folder on my hard drive, and then copy the backup back to it.  This way, not only iTunes is clean looking, but so is the iTunes folder on my hard drive.   Is this overkill?  The main reason I want to delete the cluttered folders is because I don't want two folders of essentially the same things taking up twice as much space as they need to.  I have over 100 Gigs of music, and growing, so please give me any advice you think is helpful, even if it goes against what I'm asking here.  It's time to get my music organized, and I could use some help.
    Thank You-
